APHRODITE

“Muse, tell me the deeds of golden Aphrodite the Cyprian, who stirs up sweet passion in the gods and subdues the tribes of mortal men and birds that fly in air and all the many creatures that the dry land rears, and all that the sea: all these love the deeds of rich-crowned Cytherea."   (-Homeric Hymn, translated by H.G. APHRODITE (a-fruh-DIE-tee) (Roman- Venus); The goddess of love, pleasure, and fertility, was born from Ouranus' severed penis which was cast down into the sea by his son, the titan Cronus, and the resulting sea spray. While in some versions she is the daughter of Zeus and a sea nymph name Dione. 

She reclines upon a swan (early depictions in ancient Greek art show her riding a swan, a symbol of grace and divinity) and underneath is the commonly portrayed scallop shell. Aphrodite holds her sacred golden Apple of Discord, won by Paris choosing her in the beauty contest between her, Athena, and Hera. Upon her waist sits a golden chastity belt, said to invoke lust in gods and mortals alike. 

Aphrodite had a lively entourage. Resting upon her arm, is Eros, the winged godling and her companion, (later becoming cupid in roman culture) who whispers sweet sensualities, while a couple Erotes(more winged godlings associated with sex and love) flitter above tossing flower petals. Frolicking at the lower left are three goddesses, the Charites(or Graces) who symbolize beauty, dancing, and banquets. Swimming atop the dolphin is a Nereid, a reference to Aphrodite's oceanic roots. and finally, above right, near the waterfall, are three more goddesses, the Horai, who represent the seasonal shifts and constellations. 

But the goddess of love has a dark side, like when she punishes arcadian princess Atalanta and her lover Hippomenes for neglecting to honor the goddess. The Spartans worshipped an armored, warlike variation of the goddess; Aphrodite of Areia.

There is a Klymene daughter of Okeanos, consort of Iapetos and mother of Prometheus, a Klymene daughter of Okeanos, consort of Helios and mother of Phaethon; a Klymene daughter of Nereus; a Klymene daughter of Minyas, wife of Kephalos and mother of Iphiklos; a Klymene daughter of Katreus; there are about half a dozen more ladies named Klymene.

There is an Aglaia daughter of Zeus and wife of Hephaistos, an Aglaia daughter of Mantineus and mother of Akrisios and Proitos by Abas; an Aglaia consort of Charops and mother of Nireus; there are several other ladies named Aglaia.

There is the Themis daughter of Gaia and Ouranos, consort of Zeus and mother of the Seasons; there is also a local Arcadian nymph called Themis by the Greeks and Carmenta. by the Romans, mother of Evander and consort of Hermes.

There is the Thetis daughter of Nereus and mother of Achilles; there is also Melanippe the daughter of Cheiron whose original name was Thetis

Therefore, just because in Plato's Symposium the mother of Poros is named Metis doesn't have to mean she is the same goddess whose son, if conceived, was to become king of gods and men. Metis is also one of the many names attributed to the mother of Homer: "As for his [Homer's] mother, she is variously called Metis, Cretheis, Themista, and Eugnetho. Others say she was an Ithacan woman sold as a slave by the Phoenicians; other, Calliope the Muse; others again Polycasta, the daughter of Nestor." (The Contest of Homer and Hesiod) Metis is literally a word that describes a particular form of intelligence, so it lends itself well to allegorical genealogies such as these.

I wrote this whilst listening to Hozier so, good luck. I just wanted to write something, so this isn't my best and it isn't very coherent.

Ari/Tune from The Arcadian Wilds (Book 2: Out of Sight and Mind)

Time is an odd thing, Ari thought.

When he'd left his home town there had still been cracks in the pavement, and the plants were struggling to find a place in the concrete, and there were more trees. And his name had been something else.

And she hadn't looked like that.

There's a wonderful irony in both of them coming back with different genders, he muses quietly to himself. From the distance he'd made himself comfortable at, he'd had to look twice to catch a glimpse of the person she had been. He imagines she would have to do the same.

Her eyes are unchanged, bar the obvious wear of the past decade laying quietly in the mischevious glint that had always been there. When Ari was younger he'd likened them to the sky in a summer storm, not just for the colour but how she wore them.

Everything else simply got larger and longer and held with more grace. She leaned against the wall with her same smoking habit - though a nicer lighter - and he admired the muscle to her exposed arms, the length to her legs. She was almost as tall as him.

More than anything, Ari wants to know her. He wants to know her name, now, he doubts she'd keep something as plain as it had been when she was clearly so vibrant now. Her hair long curls of shades of blue. Her makeup full of glitter. Her nails sharp and pink. She was made, he thinks, for better names than that.

Ari had always wondered what he'd do if he ever met her again. He finds that he still doesn't have an answer. Faced with her now, seeing her as the woman she is, he feels almost shy. That hadn't even occured to him as an outcome, but it's true, he feels somewhat inadequate to talk to her. Not for all the hassle he'd put her through, and not for the sheer beauty of her.

He takes a step towards her, then stops. Stood uncomfortably on the corner of the street. She wouldn't recognise him, anyway. He turns and continues on down the side street, carrying himself further away from her at a heightened pace.

Some time, but not now. Not like this.

When he gets home, he asks Eli for her name. His brother looks up at him with something close to relief, or perhaps sadness. Ari imagines he wants to ask a hundred questions about how he's feeling, or thinking, but they've never had that sort of relationship.

"Neptune," Eli finally answers him, after a long moment. "Her name's Neptune, now."

"Neptune," Ari whispers, holding every syllable on her tongue with an ounce of reverence. "What a beautiful name," he utters absently, the corners of his lips almost a smile. "Thank you, Eli."

"Will you speak with her?"

"At some point," Ari looks down at the floor "...but not yet."

"Do you want me to tell her the truth?"

Ari hesitates, he looks to his brother, searching him for some indication on what his response should be, but finds nothing. "I don't know," he replies honestly "...It feels unkind to have you tell her that I'm still alive, no, I believe this is my responsibility." He takes a deep breath. "I just need some time."

"...Are you okay?"

A pause. Silence lingers as Ari realises, he doesn't quite have an answer to this. "I will be." The two of them share a more formal nod than brothers should, perhaps, have. But for a mere second, they were almost normal.

GodPedia Series: Despoina the Curious

Amongst their interactive stories, one of them being “Retribution: He Cries”, the writer, “L-writes-things” has incorporated elements inspired by various mythologies including: arabic, nordic, greek and east asian. The aim of of the overview is to analyze and compare the fictional character featuring in both “Retribution: He Cries” and “Cheers to the Elites” with her mythological counterparts.

Despoina is featured on both stories, but plays a more active role on the trailer released for “Retribution He Cries”, where she tries to save the main character, the god of Winter from her lover, Abel, the god of life who has set on a quest to purge deities and creatures alike. She succeeds yet is banished from the Pantheon due to her “Inability to stop Abel from wreaking havoc”. She is the Goddess of Magic, Arcane and Mysteries and the most revered goddess in the Magi Society.

With the general background information out of the way, let’s take a look at different mythological deities Despoina might be inspired from.

Greek Mythology

The first and most obvious mythology, anyone would check for the inspiration behind any type of fictional deity character on any piece of media, would be the greek mythology. Everyone has some basic knowledge of it, at least knowing the main figures of the Greek Pantheon. Yet, few would be knowledgeable enough to be able to point out the existence of the mythological greek deity Despoina and for a good reason too.

“Despoina” itself is not considered a name, but a title meaning: “The mistress”. Aphrodite and Persephone were some of the goddesses who held this title, yet the elusive goddess’s name of Arkadian Mysteries who held this title was kept hidden to everyone but the members of her cult who worshipped her at her sanctuary on Akakesion mountain. This might be the inspiration behind Despoina of both stories being the goddess of mysteries. Mysteries and the secret rituals which have remained unknown to this day.

The titles, by which the fictional “Despoina the Curious” is known by: “The Mistress, Kore and/or The Maiden” are used intentionally it seems by the author, considering their statement of: “deities being a mishmash of things they liked…”[1]. In Greek Mythology, the title mistress is attributed to numerous goddesses such as: the daughters of Demetra (the elusive Despoina and Persephone), Hecate, Artemis and Demetra herself. According to Pausanias, Kore was either the surname or the real name of Persephone who is usually mistaken for her sister, the elusive Despoina and “the Maiden” is attributed to Artemis, yet the title itself means simply “nymph”. “

Despoina the Curious” being the goddess of magic and also having played the role of a teacher could be directly linked to Hecate, a holder of one of her titles, being the deity of everything related to magic and more. She is often portrayed in myths as a guide and in a few cases, was said to have shared these powers with her most devoted followers, one of them being the famous Medea.

Another goddess which might have been used to inspire this fictional character, in regards to her being the reason of the high number of scholars, is also Mnemosyne, the deity of memory and mother of muses. She was known to influence the creative processes of the Muses, inspiring their memory-based compositions and empowering their creative visions.

The Arcadians, ancient greek tribe, worshipped a lot of gods, due to being a polytheistic society, yet Despoina remained the most revered one out of all the deities. On the lore provided by the creator of this fictional character, she is speculated to have “died” during the “Purge of the Gods, which might be a reference to Emperor Theodosius I’s edict of prohibition of praying on pagan temples, resulting in the extinction of the secret cult of Despoina, the Eleusinian or Arkadian Mysteries.

Egyptian Mythology

Despoina’s role as a teacher and guide to the first Magi may be compared to Isis, the Egyptian goddess associated with magic, healing, and wisdom, known to be a powerful sorceress. She plays a very important figure in the Egyptian Pantheon.

Taking a look at the trailer of "Retribution: He Cries”, Despoina is depicted as fiercely protective towards her family members. This is a similarity she shares with Isis.

Ending thoughts:

Diving into different mythologies, one can find similarities and often, overlapping/similarities of mythical deities on different Pantheons. Due to Tumblr’s word and character limit constraints, only the greek and egyptian mythologies have been written, but it’s worth noting that Despoina shares similarities to most deities associated with magic and mysticism in mythical Pantheons.
