Last year I got ahold of the arcade PCB for a game called Biohazard: Gun survivor 2 Code Veronica. I’ve always wanted to play this game, so I decided to build the rest of the arcade cabinet.
It’s been a while, but I have an update!
The game runs!!! I still have to build out all the controls for the game, and a physical cabinet to house the game, but it runs!!!!!
#I’m so excited yall!#I have a lot more parts I need to get#and the actual light gun controller is a weird thing#it’s a joystick/light gun that wasn’t used in a lot of other machines#and it isn’t well documented#but this is progress!!!!

Look, it's my first arcade joystick using a wood cabinet and arcade parts.. it's one of a kind featuring graphics I edited myself as a teenager..
The friend who made it for me generously only charged me for parts not woodworking design or labor!
It was late 90's made and my friend was ahead of his time making home arcade hardware.. He made all kinds of cabinets meant to hook up to TVs that bristled with arcade hardware.. he even made a cabinet with MK1-3 arcade PCBs that could be switched via a press of a button..
USB didn't even exist so he had to make his own bespoke connectors to make them so you could interchange the cables for use with different systems!
TBH I'm not sure this is worth much except sentimental value for me..

Mazinger Z arcade pcb.
I recently changed the region from world to Japan.
Amazing shooter from 1994.
Differences are -
The International version uses English text whereas the Japanese version uses Japanese text.
After beating a stage in the first half of the Japanese version, a short cutscene will play that changes depending on which Mazinger you beat the boss with. In the International these were removed likely due to the anime being rather obscure in English-speaking countries.
In the Japanese version, before fighting the stage boss the screen pause and darkens. At the bottom of the screen they show the name of the boss before playing as usually. These were removed in the International release as the source material was not widely known.

I've been working on a game controller. I exported the .step files for the pcb from kicad and converted that into a .stl and I'm using that for a test fit. I have two full sized arcade joystick microswitches for the shoulder buttons and I'm using kailh choc keyboard switches for the dpad and face buttons.
it's unlikely I'll keep you all up to date on all the changes, but if you're interested you can check out my mastodon account!
#pcb#gaming#3dprinting#maker#kicad#i'll probably do an update when i finalize the shell when i order PCBs and when i have one working

So everyone (no one) is asking: J, what one piece of media influenced you more than anything else to a comical degree?
Elevator Action Returns, which I always knew as Elevator Action II.
One of my dad's few friends left owned a bizarre townie restaurant in East Lansing that FOR SOME REASON had this machine in the arcade/pool room, and this game probably had a bigger influence on me than any other piece of media of any sort. From ages 4 to 18 whenever we visited this restaurant I would spend at least an hour on this machine.
Red After Image remains one of my favorite songs to this day, the art style of this game is unbelievably cool to me, this was the first game where I ever played a girl character (because the girl is the best character because this game is about spamming the fire button and she is fastest.) Before I liked guns or anime or anything else I adored this game and basically NO ONE else knows about it.
I mean look at this screenshot. Copyright avoiding misspellings and the names aside, the girl just has a full GUN meter. Jad (Dessert Eagle) was fun to play but on higher levels going for higher scores you basically need to be Kart or Edie.
If I had a spare $600-$1200 I would buy the PCB and cabinet.
Yes, this is an 8-way directional shooting game where the primary mechanic is the use of elevators. You use the elevators but can also crush others or be crushed by the elevators. Important lessons as a child. This game taught me to fear and respect elevators.

Cabal (カベール, Kabēru) is a 1988 arcade shooter video game originally developed by TAD Corporation and published in Japan by Taito, in North America by Fabtek and in Europe by Capcom. In the game, the player controls a commando, viewed from behind, trying to destroy various enemy military bases. The game was innovative for the era, but only a mild success in the arcades, and became better known for its various home conversions.
Cabal has one-player and two-player-simultaneous modes of gameplay. Each player assumes the role of an unnamed commando trying to destroy several enemy military bases. There are 5 stages with four screens each. The player starts with a stock of three lives and uses a gun with limitless ammunition and a fixed number of grenades to fend off enemy troops and attack the base. The commando is seen from behind and starts behind a protective wall which can be damaged and shattered by enemy fire. To stay alive, the player needs to avoid enemy bullets by running left or right, hiding behind cover, or using a dodge-roll. An enemy gauge at the bottom of the screen depletes as foes are destroyed and certain structures (which collapse rather than shatter) are brought down. When the enemy gauge is emptied, the level is successfully completed, all of the remaining buildings onscreen collapse, and the player progresses to the next stage. If a player is killed, he is immediately revived at the cost of one life or the game ends if they have no lives remaining. Boss fights, however, restart from the beginning if the only remaining player dies.
From time to time, power-ups are released from objects destroyed onscreen. Some power-ups give special weapons such as an extremely fast-firing machine gun or an automatic shotgun with a lower firing rate and larger area of effect. Others grant extra grenades or additional points.
The arcade cabinet is a standard upright cabinet. Each player uses a trackball to move their character from side to side and move the crosshairs about the screen. On later board revisions, a joystick was installed instead with an optional sub-PCB for use with a trackball. With a trackball, dodge-rolling is done by pushing the trackball to maximum speed.
Cabal was somewhat innovative in that it featured a 3D perspective in which the player character was situated in the foreground with an over-the-shoulder camera view, similar to modern third-person shooters. Players cannot move the character while firing (holding down the fire button gives players control of the aiming cursor), and when moving the character to avoid incoming bullets, the aiming cursor moves along in tandem. This creates the need for a careful balance between offensive and defensive tactics, separating Cabal from run-and-gun shooters which relied more on reflexes. Advanced gameplay involves destructible asset management in balancing dodging (which gets riskier as the number of enemy projectiles on screen increases) with the safer alternative of taking cover behind a protective but limited durability wall.
Cabal was ported to several home computers of the era, including the DOS computers, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Atari ST and Amiga. It was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System console by Rare. A version for the Atari Lynx was previewed and even slated to be published in April 1992, but it was never released by Fabtek.
When converting the game to the Nintendo Entertainment System, Rare were given a Cabal cabinet but did not have access to the game's source code, so they had to play the game over and over and redraw the graphics from memory. To accommodate the many layers and sprites of the arcade game, programmer Anthony Ball used a common coding trick: swapping sprites from left to right every other frame. This has the negative side effect of causing the sprites to flicker when they reach the console's limit of eight per line, but Ball, like many programmers of the era, found this an acceptable trade-off for including all the game's content, and in a 2016 interview he said he is happy with the quality of the conversion.

Hey Jess, did you finish the cabinet for Biohazard: Gun Survivor II Code Veronica yet? How's the project going? ^_^ Take your time and I can't wait to see how it turns out. ^_^ It's so cool you got one of SEGA's arcade PCB boxes.
Im still working on it but I’m a bit road locked at the moment.
I’m trying to figure out a solution for the games weird control scheme. The light gun in Biohazard gunsurvivor is also a joystick for moving around, and that style of gunstick isn’t super common (which means it’s expensive as hell to get one).
I’m looking at using an raspberry pi with an OpenJVS hat to handle input so I can use some other type of joystick, but there isn’t a super convenient way to use a joystick while also holding a light gun.
#I’m thinking about using a Wii nunchuck#one hand holds the nunchuck and the other holds the light gun#but idk if that will work#ask pirateprincessjess#Arcade#biohazard gun survivor 2
