In the ‘promotions’ tab of gmail, an email from a nursery I have frequented with the subject line “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” I’ve never felt more like a cliché. And yet…. The question of the garden persistently becomes a metaphor.

The garden is a political position. It carries ideals of self-sufficiency and solitude, but also of community and food sovereignty. I find myself thinking of the final passage of Candide, which seems like a turn away from the world, but also of Grace Lee Boggs making community gardens at the end of her life in Detroit. Think of the politics of the back-to-the-land movement--an ideology in which I was raise--with all its political ideals. And yet there is just as much politics to its turning away, the self-isolating community, small and largely homogenous autarkies. Think of Ross Gay’s poems drawing from his experience as a community arborist. Every garden has its politics, its metaphors and its implications. Years ago, Hugh Raffles critiqued the discourse of botanical natives, which parallels America’s fear of immigration, its ‘nativist’ turn.

Gardening, now, is the only really messy, tactile thing I do. There is a moratorium on touch; the soil is my only real transgression against cleanliness. (That makes it sound like I am clean. I am not.) And so the question becomes – what can I touch? What can I get my hands into?
