Icons from Padmanabhaswamy's temple in Trivandrum in Kerala are taken to the beach for a bath in the sea and then powdered turmerique in a ritual called Arattu. The Arattu procession takes place in the late afternoon. Images of Sree Padmanabhaswamy, Sree Krishna and Sree Narasimha are carried along the three miles route to the shores of the Arabian Sea, at Shanghumukham, escorted by members of the royal family and armed police contingents. These customs and traditions have been practiced down the centuries. The images are given a ritual bath in the sea after prescribed poojas.

Names of the 7 elephants : Airavatham, Pundarikan, Kumudan, Anjanan, Pushpadanthan, Sarvabhowman, Supratheekan, and Vamanan (small elephant). Ezhara Ponnana refers to the seven-large sized and one small sized -golden elephants (which are called Ezharaponnana) which are kept in the temple vault and taken out once a year for darshan by the devotees. Of the eight statuettes, seven have a height of two ft., and the eighth one is half that size, hence the name Ezhara (seven-and- a- half) Ponnana (Golden elephants). According to legend, they were presented to the temple by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the founder of the Travancore kingdom. According to another story, while Marthanda Varma had made the pledge to present the ‘ponnana,’ the offering was made during the reign of his successor, Maharaja Karthika Thirunal. There are also differing stories about the reason for the offering: some believe it was offered as a penalty for the damages suffered by the temple during the annexation of Thekkumcore by Travancore; others believe it was the offering made when the marauding army of the Tipu Sultan was hammering on the gates of Travancore. The statuettes are made of a jackfruit tree and covered with nearly 13 kg. of gold plates.[5]

Ezhara Ponnana Darshan is one of the high points of the temple festival, held at midnight on the eighth day of the ten-day festival. Ezhara Ponnana Darshan begins with the ceremonial procession of the eight golden statuettes of elephants. They are later kept at the Asthana Mndapam for the annual darshan by the devotees.

One of the elegant sights associated with the temple festivals of Kerala is the 'Ezhara Ponnana' procession held during the annual festival at Ettumanoor Sree Mahadeva Temple in Kottayam. 'Ezhara' means seven-and-half and 'Ponnana' means golden elephant. Each of the seven elephants is two feet high and the eighth one is of one foot only. Hence they are together called seven-and-half elephants.

Celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February – March), it is on the night of the eighth-day devotees can witness the procession of these golden elephants. The arattu ceremony is held on the tenth day on Thiruvathira asterism. Caparisoned elephants and traditional temple orchestra are also part of the procession.

These elephants were offered to the deity by the then ruler of Travancore, Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma. The Ezhara Ponnana procession is a memorable spectacle to behold on the eighth and tenth day of the festival at Ettumanoor.

Arattu procession of Ananta Padmanabha Swamy was held grandly. As part of the Aratthu procession, Swami is taken amidst mela talas from the temple to Sankhumukham beach for a sea bath under the guidance of the Travancore royal family. However, as the procession was passing through the Trivendra Air Porpu runway, the runway was closed from 4 pm to 9 pm. Along with this, the flight timings have been rescheduled. But Swami's procession has been held every year since the 8th century.
