It’s going to be a while until they can see each other again. Now that the school year is in full swing, there isn’t much time for a break. Races, exams, essays — they all follow one after the other. Fukutomi studies the dates for the term holidays like he would his textbook. There’s a long weekend coming up, but it seems too short to be meaningful; the commute is long, and it cuts into the time he could be spending with Arakita. He underlines the date a couple of times. 

As he gets ready for his day, during the time that should be spent looking over his flashcards, he sends a text to Arakita. It’s a simple ‘good morning’ — it doesn’t ease the distance, but it makes his heart ache a little less. He won’t get a response for another couple of hours; he knows Arakita’s schedule almost like it’s his own. By now, Fukutomi knows to expect a barrage of texts when Arakita inevitably gets bored of his morning lecture; same as he knows to wake up to his phone ringing on weekends and the sound of Arakita’s voice, gravely and full of sleep, mumbling “Mornin’ Fuku-chan.”

He stares down at the flyer, pleased with the text sprawled across it:

She lights her cigarettes with matches, crushing the burning red-black heads under the heel of one expensive shoe or into the bottom of the overfull ashtray, twisting them as if squishing a bug, short and sharp. She flicks the ashes from the end and exhales out the window; in daylight he can see the trail of smoke out into the sky, fading as it thins like snow at the edge of winter, relinquishing its stubborn claim on the natural world.

She doesn’t tell him not to smoke anymore, and he doesn’t smoke anyway—not particularly for health reasons but because it’s something she does, something he associates too much with her to particularly do on his own. And because she’d be disappointed—as much as she claims he doesn’t hold that much emotional power over her, he doesn’t want to test it like this.

(He buys her a box of nicotine gum the next week, and she throws her matchbox at his face—but he  notes that she’s kept the gum, which is certainly something.)
