With apparently minimal effort (I do always forget I can text search individual works on archive.org), I've learned about the Madrian 13-sign Zodiac. I'm a bit disappointed to find out there aren't unique signs, or reinterpretations of the signs, but this is still interesting. This appears to have been an idea that was circling around the late 1970's pagan scene, as a 1977 book seems to explore this idea. This particular book can also be borrowed on the internet archive here. This book appears to call her "Queen of the Zodiac", and the Madrian source apparently refers to her as "Rule of the Zodiac", so presumably this book would have been the inspiration for the 13th Madrian sign.

A little further research turns up this page, which states that Arache Rising was written by Sci Fi author John Sladek as a bit of a hoax that took of a life of it's own. It's also worth pointing out that a more modern idea of a 13th zodiac sign has been introduced with Ophiuchus, but Ophiuchus is in a completely different place in the Zodiac.

BIOGRAPHY.

Growing up in the streets of Starkhaven, Arach became very street smart and streetwise. As a city elf, he always looked up to the Dalish and respected them (his mother a Dalish elf who had come to the city), wishing that one day he could go out into the wilderness and live like them. 

When he was a teenager, his mother and father passed away from a fever that plagued the alienage, leaving him in charge of his two younger sisters. He taught them how to survive on the streets by stealing and tricking others for food--often pinching coin from rich travellers, telling them that one day they could leave the alienage and live a life outside of the city like the “real elves”.

During rough times, one of Arach’s younger sisters went off to work in a brothel, selling her body to gain coin for them. Arach didn’t take her choices well, so he began a life of harder crime, taking on contracts that were posted around the city. He ran into a mercenary company on a job who were impressed with his archery and thievery skills, and was offered a job with them after he explained why he was in need of the coin.

Ever since, Arach has been travelling Starkhaven and the Marches for more jobs to take on with the company. After hearing about what was happening in Ferelden, he decided that he would take the journey down south, knowing that if he could provide assistance that there could be good coin in it. His sisters remained behind, and with some of the money earned, they have been able to rent a small accommodation where they can stay.

During his travels, his run ins with Dalish have been generally negative and he has become disappointed in the way that they act towards “flat ears”. His mother had always spoken well of her clan, but he’s only ever been seen as not a true elf by those he’s met, and he has begun to hold contempt towards them. Often, his facial tattoos can be mistaken for vallaslin, which he was once proud of, however, he is quick to point out that he is not Dalish, but a city born elf. 

PERSONALITY.

Arach is an upfront, no bull kind of man. While he is witty and charming, he has a very blunt nature and is not shy to get into dark and gritty details. He has lived a life on the streets and his humour shows it. At times, it may seem like he is brash and brushes things off, but he cares about the important things, such as family and safety.
