But like a true dolphin whisperer, I knew just how to work him, coaxing him with gentle persistence until he couldn't help but surrender to the dance.

From Bettas to Guppies: My Honest Take on 'Easy Beginner Fish' for Your Tank!

Today, I'm sharing my experiences with some fish that often come up when you Google search "aquarium fish for beginners." Let's dive in! 🐠👇

Betta fish are one of the most popular in the hobby. 🧡 I’ve kept four of these beauties, each with their own unique personality. Bettas are ideal for solo tanks as small as 5 gallons. But keep an eye out: extensive breeding can lead to health issues in some.

Neon tetras are another beginner favorite! 🌈 Social fish, they love groups of 6-10 and do best in softer water. They’re easygoing but can face issues from mass-breeding. Despite the risks, six of my ten are still thriving after 18 months.

Corydoras are my go-to bottom dwellers. 🐟 I keep Corydoras aeneus, a common variety. They're social, so aim for groups of at least six. For bottom feeders, they’re surprisingly easy to breed—I often find eggs around the tank!

Guppies are colorful and active but can be challenging in soft water. I tried raising pH levels but ultimately had to give mine to a friend in a hard-water area. For beginners, try all-male setups to avoid overpopulation!

Harlequin rasboras are hardy and spawn frequently in my tank! 🌿 They’re social and do well in 15-gallon+ tanks. In my experience, they’re peaceful fish that are beginner-friendly and relatively easy to care for.

White cloud mountain minnows (gold variant) are small but lively! 🐟 They’re great for unheated tanks and need plant cover to feel secure. A social species, I keep eight in a 12-gallon tank, and they’re always active.

Finally, my favorite: Honey Gourami! 🐠 Known for their deep yellow hues, they’re peaceful, beginner-friendly, and great for community tanks. Mine coexist happily with baby cherry shrimp in a 40-gallon planted tank.

Nitrogen cycle in aquariums

When an aquarium is cycled, there are colonies of beneficial bacteria established that help to filter waste and toxic compounds. 

Ammonia and nitrite are very harmful, but they will naturally occur when a fish is present (through fish food and waste). This is why it's important that there are enough bacteria established that can quickly consume and convert ammonia and nitrite.

In a cycled aquarium, ammonia and nitrite levels should be 0 and nitrate levels should be low. Regular water changes are still necessary for removing excess nitrates and maintaining water quality.

The process of cycling an aquarium can take several weeks before it is safe to add fish.

Just got back from Gateshead Guppies with some new guppies, and I'm excited to share the journey! 🐟✨

I originally set out looking for a group with a uniform look, but it didn't take long before something unique caught my eye.

They had two tanks of assorted males, but I was searching for something a bit different.

As I scanned through the tanks, I spotted a tank of stunning yellow cobra guppies—absolutely beautiful fish!

But just as I was about to pick them, something really special caught my attention.

There it was, a unique guppy strain I hadn’t seen before.

They looked amazing! These fish were sold as breeding pairs, and some were already pre-ordered.

Luckily, the two spare males were available, and I decided to bring them home.

I'm a bit concerned about keeping two males together, but I’m hoping they’ll get along.

When I got home, my tank lights were already off, so I quickly set things up to get them comfortable.

My drip acclimation tube is pretty short, so I had to get a bit creative with my tank racking to make it work.

I acclimated them for an hour to make sure they’d adjust smoothly, then gently netted them into the tank and turned off the lights to let them settle in for the night.

I can’t wait to see how they adapt to their new home and how their colors pop under the tank lights.

Looking For neocaridina (cherry shrimp)

Just putting some feelers out if anybody has some shrimps they are willing to sell to me? I have been interested for awhile in a group of cherries but I'm not really interested in supporting a big corps and my LFS has some iffy looking stock at time. I will even take cull shrimp if their color is the only reason for separation. Also open to any color, I am not too picky I just want some tiny fellers.

I am located in the eastern US and I own several aquariums already so I have experience.
