“I think she was a good choice,” Andrea said as they got to the car and settled Eloisa into the car seat. “Though John should have been slightly more discrete.”

“I agree, but it was to our advantage,” Mycroft said. “She’s enmeshed in our family practice now, I suppose. I won’t take Eloisa to anyone else while it still feels so tentative.”

“It does, doesn’t it?” Andrea asked. “We’re used to things coming and going with no permanence but this is different.”

“We’ll keep her safe from...everything,” he said, looking over Eloisa to Andrea. She nodded, as though she was going to hold him to his word, and he rather hoped she did. He was intent on fulfilling it, because as much as he was loathed to admit it, Eloisa was beginning to grow on him, and he found his life better for her being in it.
