Meet the Apprentice: Alnair (revamped!)

Okay. I know I said I'd be sharing the sprites as I finished the basics of them for heart hunter purposes, but there's been a change of plans. The sprites are STILL THERE, and you can access them through my Tip Jar, but I'm waiting to have them ALL done to post them publicly. That means waiting for all outfits and everything. Good news is heart hunter postcards WILL come as planned once I have Atlas and Shell done.

Besides, I'm not leaving you with nothing! :D I know I technically already did the 'Meet the Apprentice' for the OCs, but doesn't the revamp look nice? Doesn't little-ball-of-fluff Nhirs look cute? Doesn't it all look neater? *desperately trying to make you accept this humble offering instead*

Name another mc you read about and enjoyed! Shout out your favorite mc!

I read about so many great MC's this month! I have to say, some of my favorites to read about are Jinana from @the-iron-orchid and Alnair, Atlas, and Shell from @lonely--shine. Like I said, I read about a ton of wonderful MC's and it's hard for me to choose. It's been such a blast doing this event!

Thanks @ghoulfriendfangs for organizing this! I had an amazing time participating. I wish everyone a great start to the New Year and can't wait to read more about your apprentice's in the coming year :)

Alnair's magic

I'm back to the Arcana y'all!! I mean, it's not like I actually ever left, but shhh, you know what I mean, art about it and stuff xD

I've actually wanted to do this for So Fucking Long. Magic is a really important part of Alnair, so I thought it'd be neat to put a little guide to her magic together ^^ (and before anyone asks, I do not have any plans to do this with Atlas or Shell, but I described their magic in their Apprenticember, which you can see on my Tumblr tagged #apprenticember OR on my Insta story highlights, if you're curious)

So, yeah! Pretty happy with the result altogether, even if it's not like, perfect, but it was taking too much time as it was already xD Also, can I get a shoutout for Nhirs? Cute fire mouse is cute 🥺❤️

Fanpostcards: Asra's Sanctuary

Meet the Apprentice: Atlas (revamped!)

Ahh, my lovely Atlas! And Ineth too! :D

Not much of a change with Atlas either, but again, doesn't the revamp look nice? One thing that DID change, however, is his backstory. I actually have two versions of Atlas backstory: one in which he dies, one in which he doesn't. I decided to go with the latter one because it's more 'canon' in my head, and this way he can exist in the same universe as Alnair (which if I ever write the fanfics in my head will be super fun xD)

The Arcana: Red Plague HCs

These might've been done before, they might be obvious, or might not even make sense, but they're my HCs, so without furhter ado:

-The Red Plague is a disease of a magical nature (maybe a duh headcanon considering it's the result of a deal with demons/the Devil, but wait, there's more, this is just the base for the rest).

-As such, magicians with a plentiful, strong, powerful magic are more likely to not fall to the disease than non magic users or magicians with weaker or underdeveloped magic (think of Morga, for example).

-Magicians are more likely to succumb to the illness when they overwork/drain their magic, as their magical strength is diminished then and less likely to keep the infectious magic out of the magician's body. Even powerful magicians can fall ill if they consistently do this (this is how one of my apprentices (Alnair) and their aunt caught the disease).

-Every magician whose magic is at least moderately developed will experience the plague differently. This is because it's their own magic that tries to fight off the disease (my Alnair, for example, is attuned to fire, and experienced a feeling of burning well beyond what was normal to attribute to just the fever. My Atlas, on the other hand, attuned to plants, would probably describe it as 'something wrong growing inside').

-The HC above, coupled with the fact I believe Vesuvia had an incredibly terrible organization/effort for the plague (and by incredibly terrible I mean little to none), is one of the reasons why the plague was so difficult to research, in addition to the obvious. The plague would unexplainably manifest differently in different (magic user) victims, but the efforts were too chaotic for anyone to draw the connection. Even if they did realize it was among magic users that symptoms differed the most, I'm not sure they would have understood the core of why (as that would entail them understanding the nature of each victim's magic and how it's fighting against the purely magical-in-nature disease, and let's be honest that kind of digging into each victim's circumstances wasn't likely to happen).

-If I recall right, magic users aren't exactly super common/widespread? Much less strong, powerful ones. This is a reason I believe so many people caught and died from the illness (as being born with naturally powerful magic without having to consciously develop it must be pretty fucking rare).

-Magic wards were the most effective way to keep the disease at bay, although not infalible, as magic keeping magic out was more effective than trying to get rid of it once it had gotten in. The wards would only work while they were charged with strong magic, however, and the protection against the invasive disease would rapidly vanish the more time it passed since it was casted/recharged, even if its ability to protect against other kinds of harm remained intact.

And I think that's all I wanted to cover for now. If I have any more epiphanies I will add to this post later xD

34. How did they react when they learned they'd died of the plague?

Funny fact! Alnair becomes aware of her own death moments before they tell her, it's a very visceral knowledge and she almost remembers her death (she always comments on how ironic it is that the only thing she remembers about her past life is her death).

I actually have this scene written, so don't mind me if I pull it from my massive WIP (Alnair's journey is a route mashup and I'm writing it all):

“We— we knew each other, four years ago.”

“We… did?” I gape at [Julian], shocked, but not in pain.

Julian nods. “You were an apprentice at my clinic, during the plague. Learning medicine to help the victims. I…” he trails off, sighs. “When Lucio fell sick, I went to work at the Palace. You went at the Lazaret.”

The Lazaret. I remember when I visited it with Nadia. The looming ruins, the ashen sand, the way it called out to me… Like it held answers for me, secrets. Is that why I felt like I’d been there before? Because I had? But what was with that strange sense of belonging?

“It wasn’t— I didn’t…” Julian runs a hand through his hair. “Listen, uh, just stay calm and listen to me, okay?”

I hear it in my mind, that same calling I heard then, like answers waiting to be unveiled. Come here… Come inside… I’m not physically there now, but I follow. A red haze fills my vision. I hear distant voices, cries, and feel an intense burning on my skin that I can’t tell if it’s from the fever or the flames.

“I found out that… that…” Julian’s voice sounds distant even when my gaze focuses back on him.

“That I died there,” I say, and know it’s true, feeling it deep inside my bones, knowing it like I’ve never known anything else.

[...]

“Then that means… are you… are you okay?” Julian says, reaching out to rest a hand on my shoulder, to give me support or in fear I lose my balance, I’m not sure.

“I think I am.” There’s no headache, no sickness, and though I can feel my mind racing, I’d be worried if it wasn’t. I chuckle nervously. “It actually explains so many things, in a twisted way.” I remember how the people from my district used to look weird at me three years ago, like they’d seen a ghost… Hah, who would have thought.

31. Have they always lived in Vesuvia? How well-travelled are they?

Nope, Atlas isn't from Vesuvia! His home is in a village near the Void Lake (south of the Sea of Persephia). He's well travelled, and has been through all the central part of the map, but is still missing the north (Prakra, the Mountains, etc) and south (Shining Steppe, Scourgelands, Southern Spines, etc). See map below for a very rough aproximation of what I mean

19. Are they good at handling animals? Are they good with children?

Shell is neutral with animals (doesn't have a particualry good or bad hand/relationship with them), and could more accurately be described as the crazy auntie with kids in most routes xD That said, she does become a mother in some routes and will do great at it (and probably be the most level-headed parent too when she's with Asra, Julian, or Lucio)

Apprentice doodle icons

And so I keep ignoring my to-do list in favour of... making doodle icons for my apprentices, apparently. Was it necessary? No. Did I do it anyway? Yes.

Now, I guess I could trick myself into thinking this has been me practicing my phone doodles, but if I'm being honest it's been me being bored and having zero impulse control... Whiiich is not to say that this doesn't count as practice, however xD

Anyway, my lovelies Alnair, Atlas, and Shell. They're not the best icons, but they make for good enough doodles. I just wanted to do something cute with them. I'll probably also do them as chibis like with the Arcana LIs, with different expressions and such. Also, someday I'll go back to illustrations instead of doing only doodles/chibis, I swear. In the meanwhile, I hope you enjoy this <3

Meet the Apprentice: Alnair

Oh my gosh, why did it take me so long to put this together, it feels like it shouldn't have taken this long? Probably me being working on a million things at the same time didn't help xD

But anyway! Here's a proper character sheet/introduction thingie for my The Arcana OC Alnair, since she's gonna appear quite a while and so I think it would be nice for you to know more about them. I'm doing this same thing for Atlas and Shell, so stay tuned for that later this week. Also, please do forgive any typos there might be because no matter how much I proof read I always miss something.

Aprentices Pinknic

Coming a little late (and with being sick/injured I couldn't post it until now even when it's been done for well over a week), but I obviously had to make Alnair and Shell join Atlas in @bastart13 #pinknic fashion. Pink makes me think of sakura blossoms, so everyone got that in their outfit xD

Funny fact, all three of my babies are posed in their fav way to sit on the ground here, Alnair cross legged, Atlas with one leg up and one down, and Shell with her legs folded.

Also, this is the first thing I do from scratch on my tablet, so you'll have to forgive every character having different proportions, as I was more concerned with not making super shaky lines xD But well, I'll become better with time and practice... *cries in I still have a muscle contraction in my neck and can't really draw yet*

The Cursed Apprentice (1/8)

Here comes the loooreeee!! ❤️

I can't believe it but I almost forgot to post this xD I finished it over a month ago, but with the ArcanaAdvent and the holidays and whatnot didn't find a moment to post it until now. Not my best piece, and there are things that I would've done differently now, but it shall do because it's long due that I share about Shell.

So, Shell is, simply put, the cursed apprentice. She was brought back without her wanting to (much like Alnair an Atlas, since I don't believe them being dead had much of a say in it) and made to pay the price with not only her memories but her identity as a whole, all that she's ever been barred from her. It's this deal, this price paid, which makes it impossible for her to remember anything about her previous life, the headaches a reminder that those memories don't belong to her anymore. AND, part of her curse as well, is that her new identity is to be shaped by others/the path (aka route) she chooses to take. Shell doesn't remember anything about this experience on waking up, and Asra never knew that she too was made to pay a price either, believeing he was the only one to do so.

Aaanyway, I know it says 1/8 there right in the title, but the basic info is all here, the rest is a glimpse into what the different paths will make of her and one extra drawing to wrap it all up. I'm saying this because it might take me A WHILE to get to share the resst seeing how I am unable to not work on half a dozen different things at any given time. But we we'll get there. Eventually.
