People keep asking why "Appelsiini" isn't "apple".
The word comes from Early modern Swedish "appelsin" which in turn comes from either Dutch "appelsine" or Low German "Appelsin"
These words ultimately stem from a calque of "pomme de Sine" (chinese apple) from French.
So you might be half-right saing that the "appel-" part of "appelsiini" is related to the english word for "apple". However, the word "appel" does not exist in Finnish. The word was loaned based on it's sound, not translating it directly to "kiinanomena"
"Apple" is "omena" in Finnish, which comes from Proto-Finnic *omëna (and might be linked to Indo-Iranian)
In Finnish, the word "orange" (oranssi) does not mean both the fruit and color like it does in English. It is only the color.
Now you know!

i want to study at an Icelandic university
i will spell color as litur and use gráður á selsíus. i would watch Lazytown on RÚV all night while drinking a malt og appelsin with my herbergisfélaga. i’ll have hot dog every day that’s worth 500 króna. i would go for an ísbíltúr every night. i am also more likely to meet huldufólk, Sigur Rós, Björk and the President.

🌸 å lukte 🌸 & 🍕 å smake 🍕
å lukte - "to smell"
My brain automatically inserts som when I use this verb, since my two native languages (German/English) would use an equivalent preposition: "Es riecht/duftet nach Orangen" & "It smells like oranges"
However, å lukte doesn't usually take a preposition if you’re describing how something smells:
Det lukter appelsiner. It smells like oranges.
Du lukter sigaretter. You smell like cigarettes.
Some adjectives:
å lukte godt / vondt / rart to smell good / bad / strange
å lukte på - to smell (something), to sniff (something)
Use på when you refer to the action of smelling/sniffing something:
Du må lukte på alle blomstene. You have to smell all the flowers.
Hun begynte å lukte på håret mitt. She began sniffing my hair.
However, if one smells an aroma of something in general, don't use på:
An interesting article titled: Bier I Nederland ble trent til å lukte korona. Bees in the Netherlands were trained to smell Corona.
Hunden kan lukte frykt. The dog can smell fear.
Hai kan lukte blod på stor avstand. Sharks can smell blood at a great distance.
Han lukter blod. He smells blood. (if you use på, it sounds like he found the blood and is sniffing it)
å smake - "to taste"
å smake (a sense strongly linked to smell!) also does not take som. You can see an example of both å lukte and å smake in this news article about a family noticing a gas leak in their home:
luktet sprittusj - smelled like permanent marker
smakte bensin - tasted like gasoline
It also includes the plural forms of the nouns for "smell" and "taste":
lukt (en) - smell Jeg elsker lukten av kokos og sjokolade. I love the smell of coconut.
smak (en) - taste Katter elsker smaken av fisk. Cats love the taste of fish.
Corrections/additions are welcome!

ask game!! pumpkin and whiffle? i love seeing your answers in norwegian thank you for sharing
Tusen takk, det føles litt rart å skrive på norsk når jeg er blitt så vant til å skrive på engelsk!
pumpkin; what is your favourite kind of fruit/vegetable?
Teller bær som frukt? Jeg synes blåbær er kjempe godt, men hvis de ikke telles er det antakelig godt moden kiwi eller spanske appelsiner.
whiffle; if you could have a magical power, what would it be?
Jeg har tenkt over dette flere ganger og det har alltid vært forskjellige svar. Akkurat nå tror jeg noe skapende ville vært spennende - plante vekst? Noe med trær å gjøre? Eller en form for fortrylling? Det ville vært utrolig kult å kunne få ting til å gjøre seg selv med magi, som en penn som skriver det jeg dikterer, eller en klut som tørker kjøkkenbenken selv! :D

Some of my favourites I've come across when learning languages is things like the Norweigian for orange, "appelsin", from the Dutch "sinaasappel". You might recognise the sin- prefix here, because this means "Chinese Apple". There's a whole category of words that are basically "the foreign version of this thing we have".
Or the word "handske", common to several Scandinavian languages, which translates "hand-shoe". It's what you call a glove.
In French (at least a more classical 'Parisian' style that I learned in school), to go out for a drive is rendered "to take a walk in the car". Even in English, the way we use 'drive' is great, because it refers to using livestock to pull vehicles (as the livestock are what is 'driven') and slowly migrated in meaning to just 'moving a vehicle'.
Etymology is fascinating and hilarious and you find connections you'd have never noticed before. It's even weirder when words that look like they should be connected aren't, and it's just a coincidence that they sound similar. It's like evolutionary biology for words.
"Irish doesn't have a word for please, you have to say if it be your will" buddy do I have news for you about "please"
"Irish doesn't have a word for hello you have to use a shorthand religious blessing" buddy do I have news for you about "goodbye"!
"In Polish the word for car is that which walks by itself" BUDDY what do you think an AUTOMOBILE is?
you have got to understand that your mother tongue is not the model of language. all your words have secret histories and layers of meaning just the same as other people's words. the word you think of as just a word has etymology, it wasn't handed down from God as a finished word. English doesn't have a word for movie you have to either refer to the recording medium or use a short version of "moving picture", isn't that cute?
