What about you? What’s the one thing that makes you happy? Day 055 of #the100dayproject These vegetable seed packets packaging has probably never been changed in the past 50 years. For good reason. Perfection. #100daysofplantsTH #APlantADay #100daysofplants

#aplantaday #taurusgardening #plantstagram Pulmonaria officinalis - Lungwort, common lungwort, So named because the leaves are commonly speckled and resemble the speckling on lungs, as it happens though it's constituents have, for many years, been used in the treatment of lung disorders and asthma. The leaves are also edible and can be used raw or cooked like spinach as a potherb. In the garden though, it provides these wonderful sprays of blue to pink flowers early in the year (early spring or mid/late winter if mild conditions prevail) with a longer flowering duration than many herbaceous perennials. #aplantaday #taurusgardening #plantstagram Galanthus nivalis - Snowdrop, Common Snowdrop. Lovely flowers we all recognise, which pop up mid to late winter, heralding the spring. Galanthus, from the Greek gala (milk) and anthos (flower), the name given to the genus by Carl Linnaeus in 1735, "nivalis" means "of the snow", referring either to the snow-like flower or the plant's early flowering. Other British traditional common names include "February fairmaids", "dingle-dangle", "Candlemas bells", "Mary's tapers" and, in parts of Yorkshire,"snow piercers" (at Greenbank)

#aplantaday #tAurusgardening #plantstagram Helleborus niger - Christmas Rose, Black Hellebore. This pic was kindly donated today by a friend asking for its name. Thanks Vicky! Hellebores is an evergreen perennial flowering plant in the buttercup family,. It is poisonous containing protoanemonin, or ranunculin, which has an acrid taste and can cause burning of the eyes, mouth and throat, oral ulceration, gastroenteritis and hematemesis. Best not eating it then! Although the flowers resemble wild roses (and despite its common name), Christmas rose does not belong to the rose family (Rosaceae). It is commonly called the Christmas rose, due to an old legend that it sprouted in the snow from the tears of a young girl who had no gift to give the Christ child in Bethlehem. (at Broomhall)

#aplantaday #taurusgardening #plantstagram A wee note about my own principles on these posts: I strive to take good photos of the plants I post but the key thing to me is that they're current - I.e. This is what they are looking like right now and in order to ensure that I always take the pics myself. The short bits of info I supply are gleaned from wherever I can learn a little something unusual or new to me so, my own library, google and wiki are common sources. I really hope you are enjoying the posts as much as I am in posting them. Best wishes, Chris, Taurus Gardening. (at Broomhall, Edinburgh)
