March 1 2023 Barcelona
Bruce and I have enjoyed living in the metropolis of Barcelona these last nine years even more than we imagined we might. We were accustomed to living in the small city of Boulder near mountain parks and forests of for most of our life together, and before that I lived in small towns and cities in Massachusetts, while Bruce grew up in a medium-sized city, Colorado Springs.
When we moved to Barcelona to live abroad and improve our Spanish, we began living in an apartment instead of a house, we began walking everywhere because we didn't want to have a car, we took advantage of cultural activities, and we made friends much faster that we thought we might. We totally fell in love with this place, the lifestyle, and the people here. Also, living across from the beach was something we hadn't expected to happen but turned out to be an added benefit.
So when we had the opportunity to buy the apartment we had rented for two years we decided, since we were already living in Barcelona and Boulder half time, to make the commitment. We really like our apartment and the views of the beach and the city that we have. It's spacious enough for us to entertain and to welcome visitors to stay with us, which we have done quite a bit. But the outside terrace never quite worked out for us the way we thought it could so we redesigned the space and had glass installed over the last few years that has nearly doubled our living space. By enclosing the space near the kitchen we created an "outside" dining/entertaining space which can be used even in the winter. Before we enclosed this space with glass it was too windy and cold much of the year to eat out there, even in the summer.
By enclosing the space off our bedroom with a door onto the terrace we created a quiet, peaceful meditative space that also keeps the bedroom warmer.
By leaving the space in between the two new "rooms" open we have fresh air on the terrace throughout the year and the hardier plants still do well out there. Also, if any of our friends who smoke visit, they have a place to go without bothering the other guests.
The guest bedroom has its own exit onto the terrace and guests don't need to come through the rest of the house to go out to the outside dining and living spaces.
It took a long time to design and implement these changes and it was a LOT of work, especially for Bruce, but it was worth it and now we have a home that is more comfortable for us and our guests. So when are YOU coming to visit?

Recreation at Risk as Lake Powell Dips to Historic Low

PAGE, Arizona (AP) â A thick, white band of newly exposed rock face stretches high above boatersâ heads at Lake Powell, creating a sharp contrast against the famous red desert terrain as their vessels weave through tight canyons that were once underwater.
Itâs a stark reminder of how far the water level has fallen at the massive reservoir on the Utah-Arizona border. Just last year, it was more than 50 feet (15 meters) higher. Now, the level at the popular destination for houseboat vacations is at a historic low amid a climate change-fueled megadrought engulfing the U.S. West.
At Lake Powell, tents are tucked along shorelines that havenât seen water for years. Bright-colored jet-skis fly across the water, passing kayakers, water-skiers and fishermen under a blistering desert sun. Closed boat ramps have forced some houseboats off the lake, leaving tourists and businesses scrambling. One ramp is so far above the water, people have to carry kayaks and stand-up paddleboards down a steep cliff face to reach the surface.

Houseboat-rental companies have had to cancel their bookings through August â one of their most popular months â after the National Park Service, which manages the lake, barred people from launching the vessels in mid-July.
At the popular main launch point on Wahweap Bay, the bottom of the concrete ramp has been extended with steel pipes so boats can still get on the lake, but that solution will only last another week or two, the park service said.
âItâs really sad that theyâre allowing such a beautiful, beautiful place to fall apart,â said Bob Reed, who runs touring company Up Lake Adventures.

Lake Powell is the second-largest reservoir in the United States, right behind Nevadaâs Lake Mead, which also stores water from the Colorado River. Both are shrinking faster than expected, a dire concern for a seven-state region that relies on the river to supply water to 40 million people and a $5 billion-a-year agricultural industry.
They are among several large bodies of water in the U.S. West that have hit record lows this summer, including the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Lake Oroville in California is expected to reach a historic low by late August, with the stateâs more than 1,500 reservoirs 50% lower than they should be this time of year.
In 1983, Lake Powellâs water exceeded its maximum level of 3,700 feet (1,127 meters) and nearly overran Glen Canyon Dam. The lake is facing a new set of challenges having reached a record low of 3,553 feet (1,082 meters) last week.

Government officials had to begin releasing water from sources upstream last month to keep the lakeâs level from dropping so low it would have threatened hydropower supplied by the dam.
It comes as less snowpack flows into the Colorado River and its tributaries, and hot temperatures parch soil and cause more river water to evaporate as it streams through the drought-plagued American West. Studies have linked the regionâs more than 20-year megadrought to human-caused climate change.
Fluctuating water levels have long been a staple of Lake Powell, but National Park Service officials say the usual forecasts werenât able to predict just how bad 2021 would be.
Finger-pointing has started as boaters, local officials and the park service debate what to do now.
âThe park service has failed to plan,â area homeowner Bill Schneider said. âIf it gets to the point where weâre so low that you canât put boats in the water and you canât come up with a solution to put boats in the water, why would you come to Lake Powell?â

The 53-year-old bought a retirement home in nearby Page, Arizona, after completing 25 years of military service in February. He wanted to return to Wahweap Bay where he spent most of his childhood and teen years fishing, waterskiing and working odd jobs around the lake. But after watching how the lake has been managed, Schneider says heâs starting to regret it.
Officials say they have solutions for families and boaters who sometimes plan years ahead to explore the glassy waters that extend into narrow red rock canyons and the tourism industry that depends on them.
Once the severity of the drought became clear, federal officials began looking for options to allow boat access at low water levels, said William Shott, superintendent of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, where Lake Powell is located. The park service discovered an old ramp on Wahweap Bay that will be built out to support houseboats and smaller motorboats.
Shott says he hopes the $3 million ramp can be completed by Labor Day weekend. The project is funded by the park service and lake concessionaire Aramark.
The agency and officials from the town of Page, which relies on lake tourism, plan to open another old asphalt ramp to provide access for smaller boats while the larger one is updated.
Tom Materna, who has been visiting Lake Powell for 20 years, launched his familyâs 65-foot (20-meter) timeshare houseboat just hours before the main ramp closed but had to cut their vacation short as water levels dropped in mid-July.
âThey said no more launching out of the Wahweap ramp, so we were glad we made it out,â the Los Angeles resident said. âThen the next day I think or two days later, they called us up and told us that all launch and retrieve houseboats had to be off the lake.â

Page Mayor Bill Diak said losing boat access to the lake could have devastating financial consequences for the city of 7,500.
He said local leaders were âslowâ to address dropping water levels and limited boat access but that heâs been working closer with park officials and concessionaires on solutions.
âWe could have been a little bit more proactive on planning ⌠but weâre moving in the right direction now working together,â Diak said.
He stressed that the impact of climate change needs to be addressed, noting that the U.S. West could be facing far more pressing issues than lake access if the drought continues for another 20 years.
One silver lining, Shott says, is the park service can build boat ramps that are usable even during record drought years. Over $8 million in other low-water projects also are underway.
âEven if we did have a crystal ball and we saw that these lake levels were going to get this low, we couldnât have prevented it anyways,â Shott said. âWith that said, weâre taking advantage of the low water now.â
Troy Sherman, co-owner of a business renting environmentally friendly anchors to houseboats, said the marina housing Beach Bags Anchors shut down shortly after his company launched in spring 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. It relaunched this year but had to cancel 95% of its bookings in July when ramps closed to houseboats.
âUntil thereâs really access to a ramp again to put houseboats in, my business is kind of in a holding pattern,â Sherman said. âBut weâll totally persevere; itâs what you have to do.â

From very busy to barely anyone: What Colorado businesses looked like as they reopened after a coronavirus pause

Would it be a bonanza or a bust?
As commerce across Colorado reopened its doors on Friday with about half the stateâs population entering its âsafer-at-homeâ phase of the coronavirus crisis, the business reboot produced something in between.Â
Barbers resumed cutting hair, an ice cream shop in Vail started serving customers again, a bookstore whose launch was interrupted reopened its doors to browsers and buyers and a fly fishing shop along the South Platte River welcomed back anglers eager for an escape.Â
For some, the impact was immediate and promising. âSlammed,â was how Kim Estares of Shears Barber Shop in Colorado Springs put it about her business.Â
For others, a slow return confirmed their notion that this could take time.
âItâs better than yesterday, letâs say that,â said Wendy Withers, co-owner of the Books Are Awesome bookstore in Parker.
The Colorado Sun talked to businesses owners across the state to learn how their first day back in operation went:Â

To go back to work on Friday, Kim Estares had to reason with herself that she would be OK. Sheâs 64 and takes medication for an autoimmune disorder, potentially putting her at greater risk from the coronavirus.
 But keeping her doors closed wasnât an option.Â
âIâm taking every possible precaution I can with sanitation and hand washing and surface wiping and wearing a mask,â said Estares, who owns Shears Barber Shop in downtown Colorado Springs. âI canât retire. I canât not work.âÂ
Her loyal customers helped her get by during the month-long stay-at-home order that kept her and the two other barbers at her shop from cutting hair. Their generosity covered the rent. But she still took a financial hit from not working.
âAh, damn,â she says when asked about the financial impact. âPretty big.âÂ
The good news is that appointments were booked for about two weeks straight when Shears reopened on Friday. The bad news is that required social distancing and cleaning protocols mean she and the two other stylists at Shears can handle only two-thirds of their normal client volume.
Estares will also be losing some income because she wonât be doing straight-razor shaves for the foreseeable future. She doesnât want her customers taking off their masks.Â
She started the day nervous â âeverything felt off,â she said. But the day went as well as she could have hoped. Customers were grateful and generous. She had enough spare masks to give to the few people who came in without face coverings.Â
She was exhausted as she headed home after cutting about a dozen clientsâ hair on Friday. And sheâs glad to have the weekend off.
âIâm glad I jumped in with just one day to settle in,â she said. âIâll have the weekend to wrap around what the new â hopefully temporary â normal is going to be.â

Now all he needs are customers at his Haagen-Dazs ice cream shop heâs operated in Vail for 29 years.Â
âIt was a hard decision about being open. Iâm just trying to see if I can make it into the plus side instead of the minus side,â Almas said Friday at his slopeside coffee, bakery and ice cream shop in Lionshead Village, where he moved 11 years ago after 18 years in Vail Village.Â
Almas usually isnât worried about May. Itâs the slow season; the muddy month after the lifts close but before the summer crowds. But this May is important. After being closed for nearly six weeks since Gov. Jared Polis ordered all ski areas closed on March 14, heâs scraping for every dollar he can get.Â
âWe didnât have the income in March that carries us through late April and May,â he said. âSo Iâm testing the water. Does it cost me more to be open or closed?â
Heâs betting on being open. Earlier this week he was strolling through Lionshead and saw dozens of people ambling in the sunshine. They should have ice cream cones in their hands, he thought. On Friday, he was working alone to handle a few customers, but he had an employee on the schedule Saturday and Sunday, when he hoped to see an uptick of people passing through the village.
âThey may not be spending money on clothes and pricey restaurants, but ice cream, thatâs a treat everybody wants,â he said. âWith the beautiful weather and the governor relaxing some restrictions, I figured itâs time to offer something you can treat yourself to. We all could use an ice cream, right?â
Almas has been serving Haagen-Dazs for 42 years, starting with his brother in Miami, where he still owns a store. He used to have several shops, spread across Florida, Colorado and Arizona.Â
âIâve done a lot of scooping,â he said.Â
Almas is not super optimistic about summer. Last week Vail Resorts chief Rob Katz told employees that additional furloughs for salaried and hourly employees âwill last at least through May and likely into June or beyond.âÂ
âSo at the very earliest, Iâm thinking maybe weâll see visitors in July,â Almas said. âItâs going to be a real tough summer. My busiest month is July. Then August. Then March. So for the three busiest months of my year, Iâm going to be hard pressed.â

Flies & Lies, Deckers

Before Jeremy Hyatt reopened his fly shop in Deckers, he checked in with each of his four shop employees and six fishing guides to see how they felt about it. âWe all discussed it, and everybody felt comfortable,â Hyatt said, who runs the full-service fishing shop with his 68-year-old father, Charlie. âWe are definitely being cautious. Weâre kinda slightly paranoid about it.âÂ
Flies & Lies opened its doors for business Friday for the first time since March 15, when the family-owned shop was forced to temporarily close due to the coronavirus. The phone rang nonstop, but other than that, it felt like any other day. For now, all employees are wearing face coverings inside the shop, and only three clients are allowed in at a time. On Monday, they shifted to curbside pick-up of purchases of gear like flies, nets, poles and waders.
âThereâs been a lot of people fishing this whole time, but I think people have been very eager for us to open,â Hyatt said. âWe carry everything youâd possibly need to get out on the water.âÂ
The fly shop, which opened in 1991, offers guided fishing trips and cabin rentals along the beautiful South Platte River, a popular Colorado fishing destination.Â
âWe knew once we were able to open these doors, we could get back to what we do and we would be OK,â said Hyatt, 42, who has been fly fishing since he was a kid in Evergreen.
He said there was never a point when he considered not reopening. âLuckily, weâve run a good business. We had a cushion to fall back on,â Hyatt said. âBut it wasnât going to last much longer. So, we are happy to be open.â
Hyatt said heâs worried about the health of his employees and their families. Heâs also worried about what Mother Nature has in store for his business in the coming months.Â
âWhether thatâs flooding in the river, or wildfires in the summer, those things will hurt our business the most,â Hyatt said. âThatâs what Iâm worried about. Weâll just have to see.â

At just a few ticks past 9 a.m. Friday, Wendy Withers flicked on the neon âOPENâ sign and unlocked the front doors of Books Are Awesome, a Parker bookstore still in its infancy when the new coronavirus forced it to shut down more than a month ago.
The atrophied hinges moaned.
Withers and her partner, Denean Wisely, launched around the first of the year and still scrambled for a toehold in the southeast metro area market when their venture had to close its doors to a bookstoreâs bread and butter â foot traffic and browsers. So now they prepared, masks in place and spray disinfectant in hand, to welcome back a public thatâs still learning they exist.
As the morning wore on, a few vehicles turned into the parking lot, but nobody ventured inside. By midafternoon, two shoppers had wandered in, browsed and made purchases. A couple of online orders also filtered in.
They were prepared for this kind of reopening.
âI think people are going to come out when they feel safe,â Withers said, âand Iâm not sure they feel safe yet.â
Situated smack between Walmart and Target, the couple half joked about the drive-by exposure they must have gotten in the early days of the shutdown as frantic toilet-paper shoppers converged on the retail behemoths.
While they were closed, they concentrated on building online business for a bookstore that prides itself on a wide variety of selections â including books by local authors and a section of Spanish-language editions â plus puzzles and crafts. They had just gotten rolling with a series of events like book clubs and author signings when everything had to be put on hold.
Now, theyâre reaching out to their customers to remind them that theyâre still here, and have weathered the storm.
They never considered closing their doors permanently, due largely to what proved to be fortuitous timing of the pandemicâs arrival â so early in the life of their undertaking that the financial cushion theyâd built into their business plan hasnât been depleted.
âIt deeply affected us, donât get me wrong,â Withers said. âIt flattened our curve.â
But with just the two of them running the whole operation, theyâve been able to keep themselves in a position to rebound. They certainly didnât expect business to come storming back.
âI think weâll see a little growth,â Wisely said of the short-term future, âbut as far as families coming in, I donât think theyâll be knocking down the door yet. How long will it take?

Cristos Coffee is in an awkward place, on the Weld County side of Erie.
This let Grace Hardy and her family open to in-store seating a week before the state began its transition to âsafer-at-homeâ rules and two weeks before shops like theirs just a half mile away, in Boulder County, can take chairs down from table tops and allow people to sit while they sip their coffee.
Cristos was busy under the strict stay-at-home orders, enough so that Hardy didnât have to furlough any of her 12 employees. People filed in to pick up beverages and baked goods and purchased so many pounds of coffee beans that her dad, who roasts coffee in a warehouse elsewhere in town, could hardly keep up with demand.
So when faced with the question of following the guidance of Weld County, Boulder County or the state, the choice was obvious, she said. âWe met as a family and talked about which way to go. Weâre in Weld County, so we decided to go with Weld County.â
Last week â before Erie town trustees passed an ordinance aligning the Weld County side of town with the state order â the Hardys set out three tables, each with three chairs, to keep the number of patrons in the store below 10, and made signs for tables on the lawn outdoors reminding customers not to move them together to accommodate large groups. Masking tape Xs on the floor signal safe social distances to customers. Hardy said she was âon the phone with the Weld County health department way more than normalâ to make sure the store was operating safely. âAnd they did come down once to check on us.â
âWe were so ready,â said Hardy, who owns the shop in the Erie Commons neighborhood with her parents and brother.
The neighbors? Maybe not so much. Cops visited her store, in a commercial center just a few blocks from the edge of original Erie, every day, she said, asking questions about the advice sheâd received from the Weld County health department, about her cleaning routines, about how her customers were socially distancing themselves.
She thinks the person who called the police is not a Cristos customer. âIf they donât see for themselves, theyâre judgmental.â
Hardy is now focused on finishing renovation of Cristosâ new location, triple the size of the original, just a few doors away. The steady business through the shutdown helped confirm the familyâs decision to move to space with room enough for the roaster and for a quiet place where remote workers can sit with their laptops.
âWe had so much support from our customers in Erie, â she said, âwe knew the move was a good idea.â

Wag Nâ Wash, Highlands Ranch

Dogs of Douglas County arrived with matted hair, shaggy dos and long nails at the Wag Nâ Wash in Highlands Ranch, where pets with appointments could wait outside on the sidewalk for an employee to come take their leash.Â
The groomer and pet food shop, just a few miles south of the Arapahoe County line that now divides open and closed businesses, is booked into mid-June for grooming appointments. Wag Nâ Wash will open two hours earlier, at 7 a.m. each day, to keep up with demand and make room for social distancing.Â
âEveryone is just panicked because their dogs are matted and dirty,â said owner Katherine Davies, who for the past six weeks was open only for curbside pet food sales.
Davies now takes reservations for the do-it-yourself wash tubs so that hordes of customers donât show up at once. Only three of the six self-washing tubs are in use at one time. Customers are encouraged to towel-dry their pups instead of using the blow-dry station. And for those with grooming appointments and nail trims, owners can wait outside until they receive a text or an employee comes to get their dog.Â
Employees are wearing masks and customers are asked to do the same. Wag Nâ Wash is also disinfecting the floor and tub âbetween each and every dog,â she said.Â
During the restricted period, Davies was able to keep five employees to manage curbside delivery. Her groomers and wash attendants had to take time off, but they are back now.
Davies said she would have struggled even more financially if she had not been allowed to sell pet food, but the pandemic still hit her hard. âWe are not going to go under, letâs put it that way,â she said.Â
Groomer Jazmine Williams, who was buzzing her clippers through the curly black hair of a mini goldendoodle named Callie, was bracing for next week, when her schedule includes several more pups who are long overdue for haircuts.

Goodwill, Greeley

Within about two hours of Greeleyâs Goodwill store reopening, close to 100 customers had already stepped inside to sort through the racks and stacks of secondhand goods, district manager Todd Wakefield said.Â
Some particularly eager shoppers even showed up before the storeâs 10 a.m. opening, thinking the retailer would unlock its doors at 9 a.m. in line with its hours before the coronavirus.Â
They waited in the parking lot.
The lot, nearly full by midmorning, created an illusion of normalcy outside the Greeley store, which was one of a handful of Front Range Goodwill locations that reopened on Friday. Other stores included Castle Rock, Fort Collins, Fort Morgan and Highlands Ranch.
That illusion gave way inside. Shoppers â many, but not all, wearing masks â mostly kept their distance, obeying Goodwillâs instructions to stay 6 feet apart.
The store also closed dressing rooms, created one-way aisles, continuously sanitized high-touch surfaces and cleaned carts after every use, and ensured staff wore masks and gloves. Additionally, it capped the number of shoppers at 43, causing a steady line of customers outside.
The store reopened with employees top of mind, Wakefield said, âso they can pay their bills and get a move on with their lives.â
The majority of the storeâs 50 employees were furloughed when it closed on March 24, store manager Cate Tabor said. Seventeen were back at work on Friday, their temperatures taken before their shifts.
Wakefield, who normally focuses on stores closer to the metro area, never considered delaying the Greeley storeâs reopening.
âWeâre here for our customers,â he said. âWeâre here for our donors. Weâre here for our employees. And all three of those are dependent on us for recycling their donations, for our employees to be able to earn a paycheck and our customers just love shopping at Goodwill.â
Among those shopping were Savanna Birney, 25, and her husband, Blaine, 27, of Greeley, who were on the hunt for clothes to sell online â their main source of income.
Neither Savanna, who is pregnant, nor Blaine wore a mask or gloves, but they kept hand sanitizer nearby.
Savanna said she was happy to get out of the house after being cooped up, her mind at ease while scouring the racks.
âI feel like the precautions theyâre taking are a little more drastic than other places,â she said.
