VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canadian police said they arrested three suspects Friday in the slaying of a Sikh separatist leader last June that become the center of a diplomatic spat with India, and are investigating possible ties between the detainees and the Indian government.

Three Indian nationals in their 20s identified as Kamalpreet Singh, Karan Brar and Karampreet Singh were arrested in Edmonton, Alberta on Friday morning in the slaying of 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nijjar by masked gunmen outside Vancouver, police said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sparked a diplomatic feud with India in September when he said that there were “credible allegations” of Indian involvement in the slaying of Nijjar.

India had accused Nijjar of links to terrorism, but angrily denied involvement in the slaying. In response to the allegatio ns [sic], India told Canada last year to remove 41 of its 62 diplomats in the country. Tensions remain but have somewhat eased since. [...]

One of the World’s Most Immigrant-Friendly Countries Is Changing Course (NYT) A late-night Uber ride from Toronto’s Pearson Airport into the city usually guarantees a good fare for the driver. But not for Sachindeep Singh on the evening of Sept. 19. A few miles into the ride, his Uber app stopped working. Mr. Singh’s work permit had expired at midnight and, like Canada, Uber was putting him on notice. Mr. Singh, 23, arrived in Canada as an international student in 2019. His immigration status permitted him to work and offered a path to permanent residence, an approach labeled “study-work-stay” on the Canadian government’s immigration website. But after inviting millions of newcomers to Canada in recent years to help lift the economy, the government has reversed course amid growing concerns that immigrants are contributing to the country’s deepening challenges around housing, health care and other issues. A series of measures unveiled this year, focused on Canada’s vast temporary residence program, has imposed barriers that have left hundreds of thousands of migrants like Mr. Singh in legal limbo.

Determination to rebuild follows Florida’s hurricanes (AP) No sooner had residents of the Bahia Vista Gulf condominium complex dug out and from Hurricane Helene than they were faced with the same daunting cleanup from new damage inflicted by Hurricane Milton. The beachfront units had been gutted, treated and dried out after Hurricane Helene and mounds of sand that had blown in from the beach had been removed. Then, less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton barreled in and undid all the progress. “They’ve got to start the whole process over, cleaning, sanitizing, bringing in drying equipment, getting them all dried and prepped for renovations,” lamented Bill O’Connell, a board member at the complex in Venice, about an hour’s drive south of Tampa. Awash in oil money, Guyana promises cash, free tuition and other perks ahead of election (AP) Guyanese President Irfaan Ali announced several perks ahead of national elections next year, including free college tuition and a one-time cash payment of nearly $1,000 for every household in the oil-rich South American country. Argentina’s triple-digit inflation slows, but cash-strapped workers struggle to pay bills (Reuters) Argentina’s triple-digit inflation, among the world’s highest, is starting to slow down but this offers little relief for workers whose salaries have stayed the same while costs of basic goods skyrocketed and the government slashed state subsidies. “We’re losing track of what’s expensive and what’s cheap,” said university professor Daniel Vazquez while shopping in Buenos Aires. “Prices keep going up and the only thing that isn’t going up is salaries.” Food prices increased just 2% from last month but more than tripled their level from a year ago, while housing and utility costs nearly quadrupled. Ukrainian recruiters descend on Kyiv’s nightlife in search of men not registered for conscription (AP) Ukrainian military recruitment officers raided restaurants, bars and a concert hall in Kyiv, checking military registration documents and detaining men who were not in compliance, media and witnesses reported Saturday. Officers descended on Kyiv’s Palace of Sports venue after a concert Friday night by Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy. Video footage aired by local media outlets appears to show officers stationed outside the doors of the concert hall intercepting men as they exit. In the footage, officers appear to be forcibly detaining some men. Checks were also conducted at Goodwine, an upscale shopping center, and Avalon, a popular restaurant. It is unusual for such raids to take place in the capital, and reflects Ukraine’s dire need for fresh recruits. All Ukrainian men aged 25-60 are eligible for conscription, and men aged 18-60 are not allowed to leave the country.

A once humming city, Lebanon’s Tyre is emptied by airstrikes and fear (Washington Post) As Israeli warplanes roared overhead and their bombs plunged into the suburbs of this coastal city in southern Lebanon, a man sat by the sea with his shirt off, a lonely beachgoer in a place that most people have fled. Tyre, barely 12 miles from the border with Israel, has been swiftly and viciously emptied by airstrikes, war and fear that it will all get worse. Only its most determined or defiant residents remain, weeks after the start of Israel’s military campaign. There are few lights on in the city’s apartment blocks and shops. Restaurants on a commercial strip are boarded up, some with their windows smashed. Packs of dogs roam in places. Garbage sits on corners in huge piles. The desolate scenes in Tyre, Lebanon’s fourth largest city, are a glimpse of what the spread of the war between Israel and Hezbollah could mean for the country, where so many have already fled their homes and are struggling to find somewhere safe.

Israeli Tanks Enter U.N. Peacekeeper Base in Lebanon, Drawing Protest (NYT) Israeli tanks forced their way onto a U.N. peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon on Sunday, putting the lives of the soldiers there in danger, the U.N. mission said. Hours later, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel repeated his call for the United Nations to pull the peacekeepers out of the area immediately. The tank incursion came after days of criticism of Israeli forces over attacks that have wounded at least four peacekeepers in Lebanon. Early Sunday morning, the U.N. mission said, Israeli battle tanks showed up at one of its bases. “While peacekeepers were in shelters, two I.D.F. Merkava tanks destroyed the position’s main gate and forcibly entered the position,” it said in a statement, referring to the Israel Defense Forces. Israeli soldiers, it said, requested multiple times that the base turn out its lights. While no peacekeepers were hurt, the entry of Israeli forces onto a U.N. base risked undermining its neutral status and making it a target for Hezbollah, the peacekeepers said. It said the tanks left 45 minutes later after the mission filed a protest.

Israeli strike on hospital tent camp kills 4 and ignites a fire that burns dozens (AP) An Israeli airstrike on a hospital courtyard in the Gaza Strip early Monday killed at least four people and triggered a fire that swept through a tent camp for people displaced by the war, leaving more than two dozen with severe burns, according to Palestinian medics. The Israeli military said it targeted militants hiding out among civilians, without providing evidence. In recent months it has repeatedly struck crowded shelters and tent camps, alleging that Hamas fighters were using them as staging grounds for attacks. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah was already struggling to treat a large number of wounded from an earlier strike on a school-turned-shelter that killed at least 20 people when the early morning airstrike hit and fire engulfed many of the tents.

Cameroon bans any talk about 91-year-old President Biya’s health (Reuters) Cameroon has outlawed any discussion about the health of 91-year-old President Paul Biya, a letter shared by the interior ministry said, after Biya’s prolonged absence fuelled widespread speculation he was unwell. Earlier this week, the authorities put out statements saying the president was on a private visit to Geneva and in good health, dismissing reports he had fallen ill as “pure fantasy”. In the letter to regional governors dated Oct. 9, Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji said discussing the president’s health was a matter of national security. From now on, “any debate in the media about the president’s condition is therefore strictly prohibited. Offenders will face the full force of the law”, Nji said. Biya has not been seen in public since attending a China-Africa forum in Beijing in early September. His failure to appear as scheduled at a summit in France last weekend further stoked public discussion about his health.

Columbus likely Spanish and Jewish, study suggests (BBC) Famed explorer Christopher Columbus was likely Spanish and Jewish, according to a new genetic study conducted by Spanish scientists that aimed to shed light on a centuries-old mystery. Scientists believe the explorer, whose expedition across the Atlantic in 1492 changed the course of world history, was probably born in western Europe, possibly in the city of Valencia. They think he concealed his Jewish identity, or converted to Catholicism, to escape religious persecution. The study of DNA contradicts the traditional theory, which many historians had questioned, that the explorer was an Italian from Genoa. Countries have argued for years over the explorer's origin, with many claiming him as one of their own. There have been an estimated 25 conflicting theories of his birthplace, including Poland, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Hungary and Scandinavia.

Chapter 17 no work but lots of developments!

We start off at a Thai bbq restaurant. Thongthai brought he 5 year old brother and everyone thinks he's the cutest. The news is covering the case they just closed. Phaya is putting food on Tharn's plate and Yai notices how flirty they are being. Phaya announces they are dating. Everyone asks if he's serious or if it's April fools and how long. The Captain smugly says she knew. She sensed it from day one. If anyone gives them trouble, she says she'll give them demerits until they don't have any time off .

Phaya says they are lucky that they knew right away they wanted to be exclusive. Tharn is embarrassed. Khem notices and teases him when his face turns red. Singh congratulates him. Yai keeps giving them looks. When they go to leave for the night, Yai asks Tharn to come back with him. Tharn says he was going to go with Phaya but Yai is worried. Phaya tells him he won't break Tharn's heart. Tharn punches Yai's arm and says how can they not be serious. Yai is worried that Phaya's father won't allow them to be together. Phaya says not to worry he'll handle it. Tharn asks Yai to stop making a scene.

After they leave, Phaya asks how long Tharn has known Yai. Tharn says they've known each other since grade four or five. That they are basically brothers and Yai was there for him when his father died. They get to Phaya's grandmas house. Tharn asks how to behave. Phaya tells him to be himself.

His grandmother asks Tharn to come close to see him better. She looks between them and says it must be destiny. Phaya is worried but she assures him that no matter how far apart they are it doesn't matter if they are destined. She pulls out a golden ring of Tharn and says it's a family heirloom. It's carved with a saying: with love I own...eternally for you. Grandma says to consider it an engagement ring. Tharn and Grandma become fast friends making Phaya feel like a third wheel. She gets tired and goes to bed.

Phaya asks about the ring asking if he's accepting the proposal. Tharn says he can't refuse a gift from an elder. Phaya says if he's keeping the ring he must accept his proposal. Tharn says they just started dating. Phaya retorts they have known each other a long time. Tharn thinks it's because they met as children. Phaya means their past lives and thinks of the different versions Tharn has been: a woman, a man, a girl, a boy, a dog, and a bird. Phaya says if he wants to know Tharn will have to force it out of his mouth with Tharn's mouth.

Tharn leans is close enough for their noses to touch and says: dream on, asshole. So Phaya grabs him by the nape of his neck and kisses him deeply. It ends with a bite of his lips and Tharn wrapped in his arms. Tharn starts to curse him out and kisses him back. Wraps his arms around Phaya's neck and presses their bodies together. Phaya moves them to the bed where they continue kissing.

When they separate, Tharn says he forced him with kisses so spill his guts. Phaya didn't answer right away and pulls Tharn to lay on his chest. Phaya eventually says they've known each other since their past lives. Tharn asks if he's joking and Phaya says he's completely serious. Tharn asks how their past was and Phaya says Tharn loved him and did everything for him. Phaya says he never did anything for Tharn and didn't realize he loved him until he had already lost him. Phaya is lying there with tears in his eyes. Tharn snuggled into his chest and wonders of Phaya saw his past and felt lost.

Phaya says: I lost you in my past lives, but in this life, I'll never let you go

Tharn says how could he lose him? He's right here. He's not going anywhere. They kiss again and Phaya tells him he's making it hard to control himself. Tharn isn't ready for more so they just kiss and cuddle some more.

Tharn says he needs to sleep at his own place the next night. There wasn't much work so it was a light day. Tharn went home and Chalotorn shows up saying they have an appointment. Tharn apologizes for forgetting and asks if they can do the appointment in his apartment. Chalotorn asks why he hasn't seen Tharn in days. Tharn tells him he started a relationship with Phaya. He smiles but it doesn't reach his eyes and asks if they can get started. Tharn lies on his couch and closes his eyes. Chalotorn's eyes change to red and he pulls out a gemstone and mumbles something and places it on Tharn's forehead which he doesn't notice as he's under a spell.

We flash forward three months. Phaya took Tharn to meet Darawan. Tharn was nervous at first but they become friends quickly. Still nothing exciting happening at work. Phaya takes Tharn to his house once a week but they rarely meet his family. This time it's planned so they can announce they are dating. His sister already knew as she's friends with Dao. She almost blurts out that she replaced the book that Phaya borrowed that was originally Chalotorn's. Phaya bribes her into not saying anything. In the middle of dinner, Tharn gets a call from his grandmother to tell him his mom is sick. Very sick and may not live another month.

Phaya takes Tharn home. Tharn apologizes that he couldn't stay for dinner with his parents. Phaya says forget it and let him know to tell him if he needs anything. Phaya takes Tharn to the airport and sees him off.

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Authorities in a northern Indian town imposed an indefinite curfew and ordered police to shoot violators after clashes over the construction of a Muslim seminary and a mosque left at least five people dead and more than 150 injured, officials said Friday.

The violence Thursday also led authorities to shut down internet services and schools in Haldwani, Uttarakhand state government official Chief Radha Raturi said.

The situation was brought under control with nearly 4,000 police officers rushing to the area, said police officer A.P. Anshuman. He said police were ordered to shoot protesters violating the curfew.

On Thursday, thousands of protesters tried to block government officials and police who arrived to demolish the seminary and mosque following a court order that the structures were being built on government land without local authorization, Anshuman said.

As violence escalated, police fired live ammunition and tear gas to disperse protesters using petrol bombs and stones to attack a police station and set several vehicles on fire, Anshuman said.

State police chief Abhinav Kumar said five people died in the violence. He did not give details but said no fresh violence was reported on Friday.

Government administrator Vandana Singh Chauhan over 150 police officers were injured and several people were hospitalized.

Anshuman did not say whether police fire killed the protesters. He also didn't identify the religion of the victims.

Haldwani is about 270 kilometers (170 miles) northeast of New Delhi.

Muslim groups and rights organizations have accused India’s Hindu-nationalist government of demolishing their homes and businesses in the past. Officials have defended their actions, saying they are only targeting illegal buildings, but critics call it a growing pattern of “bulldozer justice” aimed at punishing activists from minority group.

In a report released this week, Amnesty International condemned several instances of bulldozers razing Muslims’ homes, businesses and places of worship, which it said was often done under the guise of illegal encroachment and without adequate notice.

“The unlawful demolition of Muslim properties by the Indian authorities, peddled as ‘bulldozer justice’ by political leaders and media, is cruel and appalling. Such displacement and dispossession is deeply unjust, unlawful and discriminatory,” said Agnès Callamard, the rights group’s secretary general.

The group’s researchers found that between April and June 2022, authorities in five states used demolitions as punishment following incidents of communal violence or protests, and documented at least 128 demolitions during this period.

Critics and opponents have long accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of looking the other way and sometimes enabling hate speech against Muslims, who comprise 14% of India’s 1.4 billion people.

Modi’s Bhartiya Janata Party denies the accusations.

(New York) – Indian authorities should conduct thorough and impartial investigations into allegations that government agents were involved in assassination plots against Sikh separatists in the United States and Canada, Human Rights Watch said today. The Indian government has already been linked to online disinformation campaigns against academics and activists living abroad.

The Indian government’s systemic failures to prosecute security force personnel for extrajudicial killings and other serious abuses in India raises broader concerns about its willingness to address transnational repression – abuses committed against nationals outside the country.
