Israeli Air Force F-15 pilots will stop for a day in protest against judicial reform
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/07/2021 - 21:42 in Military
A group of 37 F-15I fighter pilots from the Israel Air Force reserve intends to cancel a day of combat training in protest against the judicial reforms proposed by the government.
"On Wednesday, March 8, we will dedicate our time to speaking and thinking in favor of democracy and the unity of the people and, therefore, we will not present ourselves to the reserve on this day, except for operational activities. During the rest of the week, we will present ourselves [for the service] as planned,” the reservists wrote in a letter.
They represent almost the entire strength of 40 pilots of the IAF's 69 "Hammers" Squadron, which operates F-15I Ra'am fighters ("Raunder" in Hebrew). The elite pilots said they will attend the base for conversations with their commanders.
The pilots work at Hatzerim Air Base, near Be'er Sheva.
Judicial reforms have provoked heated debates in Israel since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition won the November 1 national election. Major protests took place every Saturday night in Tel Aviv and also in the area of the Knesset and the Supreme Court in Jerusalem. Last Wednesday, a national "Day of Disruption" took place that featured clashes between protesters and police in Tel Aviv.
These demonstrations included many Israeli military reservists, who also signed petitions saying they would not volunteer for service if judicial reforms were approved.
Last week, the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, for the second time, spoke out against the threats of the reservists. Halevi said he was "aware of the public debate and disagreements, but that he will not allow to harm the ability of the IDF to carry out their fateful mission - to protect the security of the nation".
On Friday, the head of the IAF, Major General Tomer Bar, sent a letter to the pilots and navigators of the reserve asking them not to abandon their responsibilities to the state if judicial reforms become law.
"My expectation as commander of the IAF, as well as the expectation of the commanders at my side, is that you continue to report to your units for duty, that you continue to serve and fulfill your commitment to your unit, your subordinates and your commanders, to the State of Israel, to your safety and to the protection of your citizens. You [must] show commitment and responsibility for the cohesion of the ranks, soldiers and the brotherhood of the fighters. There is no substitute for all of you,” Bar wrote.
Israeli air force reservists are required to fly once a week to maintain operational readiness. Sometimes they carry out combat missions. However, they are designated as volunteers, with no legal obligation to attend the training.
Asked about these conversations, a military spokesman just said: "In fact, this situation is being dealt with internally."
The opposition sees in the proposed reforms a threat to judicial independence, and some protest leaders - among them retired generals - argue that an undemocratic turn in the government would justify a mass disobedience within the ranks.

IDF Confirms Death Of Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah Killed In Beirut Airstrikes
A man inspects the massive damage on September 28, 2024 in the Hadath neighbourhood of Beirut’s southern suburbs in the aftermath of overnight Israeli airstrikes on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah died during an Israeli airstrike on the group’s headquarters in Lebanon.
IDF’s Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, confirmed the death of the leader on Saturday.
“This is not the end of our toolbox. The message is simple, anyone who threatens the citizens of Israel – We will know how to reach them.”
The IDF revealed they had targeted Nasrallah when they attacked the southern Beirut headquarters of Hezbollah. At first, a media relations official for the group declared him “fine and well.”
Hezbollah then later acknowledged the death of Nasrallah. They also stated they would keep fighting Israel “in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defense of Lebanon and its steadfast and honorable people” in a statement provided to Reuters.
Lebanon’s health ministry reported that numerous people were injured and that at least two more people had died.
“The IDF announces that yesterday (Friday), September 27th, 2024, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization and one of its founders, was eliminated by the IDF, together with Ali Karki, the Commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, and additional Hezbollah commanders,” the IDF said in a statement.
“Following precise intelligence from the IDF and Israeli security establishment, IAF fighter jets conducted a targeted strike on the Central Headquarters of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, which was located underground embedded under a residential building in the area of Dahieh in Beirut,” the statement added. “The strike was conducted while Hezbollah’s senior chain of command were operating from the headquarters and advancing terrorist activities against the citizens of the State of Israel.”
The IDF said that Nasrallah was the primary decision-maker and strategic coordinator of Hezbollah.
On Friday, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin told reporters that “the United States was not involved in Israel’s operation,” noting there was “no advance warning,” from the Israelis.
After warning Hezbollah about Israel’s right to go on the offensive during his speech to the UN General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short his trip to New York.
“As long as Hezbollah chooses the path of war, Israel has no choice, and Israel has every right to remove this threat and return our citizens to their home safely and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” he said.
Following the speech, a photo of the Israeli prime minister in his New York hotel endorsing the operation against the terror chief was made public by the prime minister’s office.
According to the IDF, it is still hitting Hezbollah-owned terrorist infrastructure.
“Since last night, the IDF struck over 140 Hezbollah terror targets, including launchers aimed at Israeli civilians, buildings in which weapons were stored, strategic weaponry, weapons production facilities, and additional terrorist infrastructure sites, some embedded underneath residential buildings in the area of Beirut,” the IDF said.
“The IDF is continuing to operate to degrade and dismantle Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure and capabilities,” it added.
Ayatollah Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, stated “the resistance” will not be destroyed, but he made no mention of Nasrallah’s passing. The Supreme Leader went on to say Hezbollah is leading the “resistance forces” that will determine the “fate of the region.”
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

"No Provision For…": What UK Said On Sheikh Hasina Asylum Reports
British immigration rules do not allow individuals to travel to that country to seek asylum or temporary refuge, the UK Home Office told NDTV Tuesday morning, amid persistent speculation ousted Bangladesh leader Sheikh Hasina, now in Delhi, will fly to London to claim sanctuary.
The UK government - now headed by Sir Keir Starmer following Labour's landslide win last month - also said individuals seeking asylum must do so "in the first safe country they reach".
"The UK has a proud record of providing protection for people who need it. However, there is no provision for someone to be allowed to travel to the UK to seek asylum or temporary refuge."
Those who need international protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach - that is the fastest route to safety," a UK Home Office spokesperson told NDTV.
Nevertheless, sources indicate a formal asylum request is being processed.
Mrs Hasina, 76, was forced to resign as Prime Minister Monday evening after weeks-long protests over a jobs quota killed over 300 people. She fled Dhaka in a military aircraft - reportedly after the Bangladesh Army gave her a 45-minute ultimatum - and flew first to an IAF base in Uttar Pradesh.
Sources last night told NDTV Mrs Hasina - met on arrival in India by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval - would proceed on to London after her plane was refuelled. Since then, though, there has been confirmation of the former Prime Minister's schedule or, indeed, about her location.
Sources have, though, said she is in "protective custody" of Indian intelligence services.
She is accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, who is a UK citizen, which could be useful to claim asylum in that country. Also, her niece, Tulip Siddiq, is a British Labour parliamentarian.
Mrs Hasina's daughter, Saima Wazed, is based in Delhi as the regional chief for the World Health Organization. This, though, may not open doors as she works for an international agency.
This morning Bangladeshi publication Daily Sun cited unconfirmed sources as saying India has granted permission for an "interim stay", during which Mrs Hasina will get comprehensive logistical support.
This is reportedly only temporary and pending relocation to Britain.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed on the Bangladesh situation, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has spoken to leaders of all major political parties in the country.
At that meeting Mr Jaishankar spoke of a "conspiracy" to topple Mrs Hasina's government. This was in response to a question by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who asked if there could be an involvement of foreign powers, specifically Pakistan, in the dramatic developments in Dhaka over the past few weeks.
In speculation that has emerged (inevitably so) since Mrs Hasina quit, three key names are at the forefront, two of whom are the Army, which took charge after Mrs Hasina quit, and which may have given her a 45-minute ultimatum; and her nemesis and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who was jailed in 2018 on corruption charges and whose release was ordered by the President.

Officer faces sack for accidental shooting of IAF’s helicopter
The Mi-17V5 had crashed in the Budgam area shortly after take-off killing all six onboard and one civilian on the ground.
NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force’s General Court Martial (GCM) that probed the accidental shooting down of a Mi-17 V5 helicopter in February 2019, a day after the Balakot attack in Pakistan, has recommended the dismissal of a Group Captain. Sources said the GCM ordered the sacking of Group Captain Suman Roy Chowdhury, who was serving as Chief Operations Officer of the Srinagar Air Force Station at that point in time.
The probe determined that the attack helicopter was struck by the IAF’s surface-to-air missile when the chopper was on its way back to Srinagar on February 27, the day Indian and Pakistani air forces were engaged in a dogfight on the Line of Control.
The Mi-17V5 had crashed in the Budgam area shortly after take-off killing all six onboard and one civilian on the ground. The GCM’s decision is yet to be sent to the IAF chief for confirmation. “The verdict of GCM is subject to confirmation by the competent authority. Hence, the officer has not been dismissed from service,” a defence source said.
Sources said the IAF can act on the GCM’s recommendation only after a decision on a case relating to the incident by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Last month, the HC is understood to have allowed the GCM to pronounce its verdict while stating it must not be implemented till the court disposes of the case.
