the northernmost prefecture of japan's largest contiguous island (Honshu) is a place called Aomori. the literal translation of this name reveals that it means Blue Forest on its face, as 青 (Ao) refers to blue hues. the kanji for forest is 森 (mori), which you may also recognize from Animal Crossing's Japanese title, Dobutsu no Mori (どうぶつの森)-- or Animal Forest. anyhow we're focusing on the blue thing right now.

before the heian period, the japanese word for what we'd specifically refer to as "green"-- Midori-- didn't exist yet. the only four colors the language had, which weren't really colors as much as they were hues, were Black, White, Red, and Blue. Midori came along around 1000 A.D.-ish, but wasn't widely adopted in usage until around world war II. as such, some people in japan still refer to green things as blue, such as green traffic lights (青信号 Aoshingou), green apple (青りんご Aoringo), and green mountain (青山 Aoyama).

I decided to read the original Tokyo Mew Mew manga. This author note stuck out:

Because a couple characters still kept these color coded names. Ichigo MOMO-miya. Lettuce MIDORI-kawa.

I already knew the Mews' first names and the alien trio's names came from foods, but hadn't known about colors being incorporated into their names.

So out of curiosity, I looked up Japanese words for colors:

Here's some additional color trivia:

The four main colors in Japanese culture are black, white, red, and blue, with the last two representing all warm and cool colors respectively. (Green especially used to be considered blue.)

The word for color is "iro", thus why many of the additional colors use "iro" as a suffix.

So with those in mind, I realized the Mews aren’t the only characters named after colors. (Full name meanings are pulled from the fandom wiki, but here I'll list a name, the word part referring to a color, and said word part's literal meaning in Japanese unless otherwise indicated.)

Ichigo Momomiya: "momo" = peach

Minto Aizawa: "ai" = indigo

Retasu Midorikawa: "midori" = green

Bu-Ling Huang or Purin Fong: "huang" is the Mandarin form of 黃 = yellow

Zakuro Fujiwara: "fuji" = wisteria

Ryou Shirogane: "shiro" = white

Keiichiro Akasaka: "aka" = red

And characters in spin-offs and sequels:

Ringo Akai: "aka" = red

Beri Shirayuki: "shira" = white

Tasuko Meguro: g → k in "kuro" = black

And finally...

Masaya Aoyama: "ao" = blue

The Blue Knight. Deep Blue. The aliens' messiah, if you treat the first name as a Japanese-to-English pun.

Honestly? Depends on the person.

Sangoku, Tsurugi, Kurumada, Amagi, Aoi, Midori, Shindou and Aoyama generally have regular names for everyone. Nishiki has as well, except Midori, who he's calling "Red Monstrosity" and the only reason he's still getting away with it is because she doesn't know yet. Kirino uses the normal names too except for Kariya, who, in a moment of spite, he saved simply as "bitch".

Akane has vague nicknames for them all and no one understands how she knows who is who, but she never messes up so they've all just decided to let her be.

Hikaru has everyone saved by their name with (soccer) behind it and Kariya gets offended bc "dude, we hang out every single day! Is there another Kariya in your life you could get me confused with???"

Kariya, or course, has weird nicknames for them all. Kirino is 'favorite target'. Sangoku is 'Mom friend'.

Shinsuke has saved everyone by wrongly spelled names, with the wrong Kanji that are still pronounced correctly. When he has to write their names somewhere and can get away with it, he does the same and it annoys them all to no end.

Tenma initially saved everyone by their name (except Aoi) but he's slowly starting to change it. Shindou is Peacock-senpai (after AR he's going to change it to DQE-senpai tho). He's got Tsurugi saved as Emu after Kariya made a typo when trying to call him an emo in the group chat.

Hamano obviously has Sangoku as Sangomom. By the time AR begins, he's not the only one anymore. He and Hayami have also saved the other as Platonic Love of My Life. Hayami still regrets ever going along with that but he refuses to give in and change it now because then Hamano would never let him live it down.

Ichino, surprisingly, also uses nicknames for some people. He's got Tenma saved as 'the trouble magnet', Shindou as 'oh the drama', Tsurugi as 'would help me hide a body', among others.

Kurama has the second and third-years saved by name. The first-years he saved as Rookie #1, Rookie #2, Rookie #3, Rookie #4, Rookie #5 and Rookie #6. Eventually he gets asked if it doesn't get confusing and ends up changing it. Hikaru is Polite Rookie. Aoi is Rookie Manager. Shinsuke is Rabbit Rookie. Tenma is Loud Rookie Do Not Engage. Tsurugi is Definitely Not Scary Rookie. Kariya is Rookie I Can Freely Slap.
