You preserve characters' voices and identities through just how they talk, and the actual way they talk feels natural and cohesive.

I like when Grovyle likes ancient languages, we can't let his knowledge of the Unown alphabet be a forgotten detail.
Celebi got a "keep yourself safe" in se5, it's only fair Dusknoir gets one too.
While not completely related, here's the first voidlands post i made.
