Chewing on the possibility that the both the wheeler home and the creel home are at least in part inspired by The Shining. Which is really interesting because of the whole theme of abusive cycles (allegedly- Kubrick himself never explicitly confirmed) and holding up a mirror to show someone who they really are.
Which is really interesting when you consider the deliberate choice to make the wheeler home reminiscent of things in the creel home before the creels themselves moved in. Karen possibly being paralleled to the ghost of room 237, which in and of itself possibly was a "mirror" for Jack Torrence. Which is... An interesting choice because Karen herself married young to Ted, who was older (do the math and he was about 30 and Karen about about 20). I already talked about this before but they never loved each other, so Ted most likely only married Karen because of the conformist pressures that existed for men and Ted was nearing his 30s, and marrying an impressionable young woman without as much life experience as you and really doesn't have much of a choice is a way to build that "family man" persona. In short, he used Karen- which is pretty clear from the song of choice (I Just I Died In Your Arms Tonight) they played when Karen was getting ready for her date:
"Is there any just cause for feelin' like this?
On the surface, I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again
I've lost and found, it's my final mistake
She's loving by proxy, no give and all take
'Cause I've been thrilled to fantasy one too many times"
("She" being Ted)
In a similar fashion Karen attempts to use a teenage Billy (17 when she met him and 18 when she makes plans to have a sexual relationship with him) for her own sexual desires since she felt neglected by Ted and also felt that her youth was wasted being married so young. It's different intentions but the same general idea: using someone who is much younger and impressionable than you to selfishly fulfill your own needs/wants.
Anyways, Victor Creel is obviously a reference to Jack Torrence. But who would be Delbert Grady in this scenario in this scenario? The one who came previously before him?
