analysis of what each sink scene represents - session five

once again thank you tash for the reams of analysis material!!!! spoilers (obviously) under the cut

for reference, i'm calling fire/dry girl/narrator kate, and her victim/best friend birdie

all that jazz: a first reading of this scene would suggest that it's similar to scenes like beany hag and sonic the hog, where we're shown birdie's relationships degrading because of her lingering trauma over kate and the camping trip incident with amy representing birdie and simon representing her partner. however is this the only explanation? i argue no. amy seems utterly pre-occupied with the dangers of the shower (wet)!! this seems far more like something kate would say than birdie ("Until the shower runs – dry, and you’ve drunk it all, and, and you’re dead!") however later on we get a more classic kate phrase from simon ("I’m all dry.", "Dry. For the fire.") i'll be honest, as fun as this scene is, it's pretty impenetrable analysis wise! we get a little more to work with with some of amy's fears ("Some monster is not on the way to get me.", "No, it’s not about the birds…", "She’s a perfectly normal girl, alright? You just – have to just leave it. You have to just leave it. Some monster is not coming to get me.", "Oh, Simon… please, please don’t… take him away… Simon!") the emphasis on her being a perfectly normal girl feels more like a description of kate and a defence against relations who think kate is toxic - making simon birdie in this instance!! it's hard!! i don't know what's going on!! i' think maybe i'm putting a pin in this scene. ALL THAT JAZZ WILL RETURN.

snakes and ladders: finally, a scene that makes sense. this is pretty neat cause it feels very close to what actually happened!! as we get closer to the culmination of everything in session six i think we're getting closer to the truth. anyway this scene is very much kate&birdie being genuine friends and then a little bit of outside perspective! we can see how much they're in sync and how they seem slightly strange to an external observer ("Sorry, I’m – I’m still quite confused about all the snakes?" "Same!", "W– we love climbing. We love how high we’re going." "We love being up high!" "Yay!", "Fucking hell.") i think this is really valuable to show that kate and birdie were very much on the same wavelength! they seem so young here ("But fly, sort of.") and we can very much see that they're humans! we get no mention of dry/wet/fire in this scene, it's focusing less on kate's problems and more on how their friendship actually seems a little sweet. their closeness does seem to have some exclusionary effects - they're not listening at all to their other friend, in fact he tries to share something personal which gets completely overlooked ("Whenever I was, upset, or like, sad, my grandad would help me – [...] Won’t tell you that then.") so we can see that as in-tune with each other as they are, this leads to cutting off the rest of the world - it may seem to them that all they need is each other, a sentiment which they definitely seem to be embodying here, but we the audience know what that leads to. there's a little bit of dramatic irony here - if birdie had spread her social net a little wider, spent more time listening to other people, the camping trip incident might not have happened. but we can see that their refusal to play snakes and ladders in favour of birdman ("So you – you – you start outside. Right?", "We’re all birds though, right?") echoes kate especially's refusal to "play along" with society as it stands and to play her own game. in addition i think this is the first time we see birdman as a game!! it gives an explanation not only to all the birdman scenes but also the scarecrow scenes! the explanation kate gives ("When the scarecrow finds you, it scares you. And the last bird is scared so much, his bird eyes turn hot, and into little buttons, and then the last bird becomes the scarecrow. And then you start again.") is representative of the entire point of the podcast! birdie is about to be scared so much that kate wants to turn her into the scarecrow - and start again. in a sense the emphasis on "and then you start again" represents kate's desire for her relationship with birdie to be neverending - she wants them to keep finding each other and starting again, a cycle with very sisyphean feelings. the other interesting thing about this scene i think is kate and birdie's attempt to seem much more mature than they are ("Okay. Is it like, is it a commentary?") which actually shows how young they actually are. obviously it's neither a commentary on snakes nor ladders, but we can see how much they want to present themselves as adult and mature - old enough to run away from home. i think that image of themselves as adults ties into the feeling of not needing anyone other than each other, but we can very much see the folly in both those ideas. this is a little bit of a bittersweet scene! the girls feel about the right age for the camping trip, so it feels chronologically like it's very close to everything going wrong. this is one of the last moments we have of kate and birdie before the camping trip - and we can still see a little of that youthful innocence! and their other friend! it's sad to see what could have been, knowing what comes after.

birdman 4: the extra bit we get here is "One by one, it never stopped.", "It’s coming now! There’s nothing we can do, it’s a monster, Jim! It’s a monster, it’s coming to get us!". this feels very reminiscent of all that jazz (painfully for me) given lines like "Some monster is not coming to get me." which... i don't know what that means because as i have mentioned, all that jazz is impenetrable to me. rip. anyway this bit is very interesting! the use of "it" instead of "he" distinguishes the thing coming for them from the birdman, which had come to "warn" them. despite the fact that kate is playing the part of the birdman/scarecrow, i think there's an important distinction to be made between the birdman for john & jim, which is the birdman of birdie's dreams, a reminder that she needs to be watchful, and the birdman kate is playing, a real-life figure who is genuinely coming for birdie. obviously not using "she" delays the realisation until session six but also using "it" very much dehumanises kate - implying she has lost her humanity and become nothing more than the scarecrow she was pretending to be. the key thing from this scene is "it never stopped", i think - kate never stopped! she's still out there! birdie's dreams are doing a great job trying to warn her - the game of birdman isn't finished. it's still going. kate's still playing. ooh and i've just noticed!! "Jim, did a Birdman come to your school?" - this has been clearly juxtaposing the birdman with school this whole time! it's very much a schoolyard game and they've been suggesting that this whole time! wow i'm a silly billy for not noticing that immediately. the birdman is in the realm of children, not adults. i'll even call back a bit from birdman 1 - "Yeah, at the time, even the teachers –" here, they're suggesting it was odd that no one noticed that the birdman wasn't a man at all. i have a two-fold realisation here! on one hand - no one noticed that kate was going off the deep end. boring analysis. on the other - the birdman wasn't a man. he was a BIRD!! he wasn't a scarecrow!!!! he really hadn't come to scare you - the birdman isn't the scary thing! he's a reminder of the scary thing! ugh natasha hodgson your mind. you can't be scared of dreams, can you. the birdman is poor birdie trying to warn herself but she's just not remembering.

sherbet: the story of how kate and birdie met <33 honestly aside from the real laser gun action i have no trouble believing that this is entirely accurate to how kate and birdie met. it makes sense that birdie is getting closer to remembering the truth and this is a formative moment quite literally ("And right now, with – with her looking right at you, is the last moment you’ll, sort of, be alive. Because it – it was all a different life, after that. You were a different person now.") there's so much in this but i feel like for the most part it speaks for itself? like ("She was in the back, and she had to lean over the middle bit, and open the other side of the car. Just for you. Just for you. And so, when you see her, for the first time, she’s leaning over to open the door, and you look at each other, and you just think… oh no.") you get it you get the themes. if i were writing an essay on any of the scenes from the sink it would probably be this one if it couldn't be like. the whole of session six. like kate is crossing the gap to be closer to birdie literally closing the distance. which is what she's doing right now. closing the distance. ("You were a different person now.") she's not birdie anymore she's half of kate&birdie. that's genuinely how it feels in relationships like that, that you're not whole without the other person. even after you're separate again not a day goes by without you thinking of them. so yeah tash pulled it out of the bag with this one. ("You walk over with your see-through dolphin bag with three dolphins on, bumping on your leg. And she’s got a chewy stick from a sherbet fountain in her mouth, so her mouth is all foamy, like a beach.") i like how realistic this is. like we get all the details!! really hammers home how much birdie was her own person before she became kate's friend and before she was haunted by the memory of kate. also something something violent destruction - chewy stick in her mouth means gnawing down on it & we see immediately that act of violence in the innocuous facade of a child. anyway. ("And this is the last moment you’ll be… alive. Because, the rest of your life is, is just – playing it back. And back. Over and over, watching the yellow sherbet foam, and her leaning over the middle, and hearing the seatbelt click.") hits home when you think about how much birdie has forgotten, has tried to forget - and yet she's still playing it back over and over. every dream she has is playing it back. ("And most of the time, you’re you. When you’re doing it, over and over, in your head. And sometimes you’re her. Just to wonder – what she was thinking. Always. Always, you’re wondering that, and sometimes you’re the sherbet, being in her mouth. Lovely, wet, yellow. With her chin like sand.") this is most key as context for the whole of the sink. most of the time you're you and sometimes you're her and sometimes you're the sherbet. most of the time the scenes are birdie and sometimes they're kate and sometimes they're the birdman. INTERESTING that the sherbet in her mouth is WET. suggests that she's so so early on!! this is before she's all dry!! she's still a baby!! and then after the imagery of birdie imagining being in kate's mouth we get the somewhat violent penetrative image ("With her hand, like, just… just putting it in your body.") which is slightly creepy and represents the intrusion of kate firmly into birdie's life. this is imagery that gets picked up on later in session six and like. right now because they're children it's a little creepy but it's harmless enough. but when they're older it's more... like. putting something in your body. the ultimate intimacy.

Now we return to the mixed bag that is an epic multi-parter Knuckles story with Elson art, but also the Marxio Bros have to be there. Gotta admire the boldness of promising a guy who has no concept of money that they can make him rich tho

We have a conflict of interest between the island’s sole resident and the guys who put a carnival here. I’m a little confused by how much business they think they’re going to get on this island, but I’m sure we’ll get to that

Poor, gullible Knuckles. As we saw at the end of the last big arc, StC Knuckles believes that his people will one day “return from space” to join him on the island. They do eventually adapt that for the Sonic Adventure arc, but it remains a mystery until then. Anyway, can’t have space grandpa seeing all those dusty old ruins when you could instead be taking him to the fun fair!

It doesn’t last long, however. Since as soon as he spots the Trooper badniks, Knuckles realises they’re working for Robotnik

I mean… we’re obviously waiting for the penny to drop about these guys being the villains, but I love the implication that just anyone can buy a few badniks off Robotnik. Guy’s gotta make ends meet somehow We also get the lore drop that people just know about the Floating Island now. It’s not the myth that Sonic and Amy thought it was a short while ago

The Marxio Bros keep up the act that they’re trying to win Knuckles over, but if there’s any doubt that they’re still working for Robotnik after their stint in the Chemical Plant Zone, you can put it to rest here

I don’t actually need to add this last panel of Knuckles enjoying a scary rollercoaster ride, I just like it too much to skip it out Which leaves us at the end of this part. My opinion hasn’t changed much from the start of the story - it’s mostly that the amazing art and the novelty of a Knuckles story is getting me through what would otherwise be the return of some joke villains that I’m not interested in. But I can definitely enjoy another issue for the art alone. I can’t imagine they’ll get more mileage than three parts out of this one, but I guess we’ll see?

…Though we’ll be waiting a little bit before that, because there’s another Poster Mag before the next issue and this one does have a Sonic comic in it. So I’ll be taking a look at that next time, before moving onto the next StC issue, which I believe is our first bumper issue with more stories in it, yay!

[Review] Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS)

Maybe Sonic Boom works better in 2D than 3D.

Alongside Rise of Lyric, Sega commissioned a handheld companion game within their Sonic Boom line. Development duties went to Sanzaru Games, another American studio who had previously made the Sly Cooper 3D platformers. This is actually their first 2D game (well, 2.5D anyway) and while it's less ambitious than RoL, it is much more successful at fulfilling those lower ambitions.

While RoL had a flash-forward cold open, this one abruptly starts in medias res with Lyric accosting Amy. Amy apparently is an archaeologist of sorts, and Lyric mind controls her to find the secrets of a lost extra crystal, tying into the MacGuffin objects in RoL. This sadly puts Amy in the "damsel in distress" role, but it does make room on the D-pad character switcher for Sticks to be playable this time (yay!). Incidentally, Lyric is not given an introduction in in-game cutscenes, but gets some backstory in the form of a short comic that is only viewable after level 1, which also sets up the present-day events. It's done by the Archie team of Ian Flynn and Evan Stanley, and [fun fact] is the only time that Sega let them put Lyric or Boom Shadow in any kind of comic medium.

The game plays out on a 2D plane with occasional dips into the foreground or background in short transitional sequences. It reminded me a little of Generations 3DS since it has a boost/dash button (unlimited use here, but doesn't damage enemies until you get an unlockable perk late on) and a mid-air homing attack. You also get the Enerbeam for grapple swinging and removing enemy shields, and each character has their own abilities and interactions. Tails can hover and throw bombs, Knuckles can burrow, Sticks throws her boomerang, and Sonic has a versatile air dash. As you encounter the characters and quickly build your team, you can swap between them on the fly which is needed to progress and find optional areas.

Although the format feels a lot more like traditional Sonic than RoL, this is similarly more slow-paced and exploratory than many of the series' 2D outings. I do think it strikes a good balance and flow, helped by quick on-the-spot respawns from pits as long as you have rings. The levels can be sprawling, and it's not always obvious which path leads onwards or to optional goodies, but it's usually possible to backtrack or loop to earlier portions. And you will need to do this, as completionist plays of levels become necessary. In a good use of the bottom screen, a scrollable map does help you get around and find goodies.

Saying this game only has eight (8) levels sounds absurd, but it's not the full story. The levels are huge, with full collectathon runs taking upwards of 15 minutes while the time trials often have a goal over 5 minutes. Each one also consists of two different environments that you bounce back and forth between using Enerbeam slingshots. These levels have a series of goals: time trials and ring collection give tokens to unlock character model dioramas, while collection of all blueprints (for unlocking passive perks, much more useful here than RoL's equivalent bonuses) and crystal shards give crests that unlock new levels. If you try to just breeze through you quickly encounter a hard roadblock that makes you go back and repeat levels for crests. I'm the type who enjoys doing and getting everything so it suited me, but it might not be to everyone's tastes that this is required.

Along with the eight main levels, there are race levels... kind of like the races in Generations 3DS. These use the same engine to have you beat another character through a fast-paced platforming level, and I found them fun to learn and improve. Another type of side level is the worm chase, an into-the-screen autorunning affair which Sanzaru would build on in their Tron Run/r game soon after this. These were less enjoyable for me and more demanding, although they're simpler to control. Rounding out the whole game is a Lyric battle—the only boss fight—which is not bad and incorporates platforming between phases. These other level types are a good way to flesh out the package and break up the action between the gigantic regular levels.

One of the strengths of the Sonic Boom show is its array of goofy side characters, and while RoL slotted a few in, there's a dearth here. Shadow at least has slightly more of an integral role in Shattered Crystal, but oddly Eggman has barely a cameo! However SC does stand head and shoulders over RoL in the script department as it actually remembers that Sonic Boom is a comedy series, and has lots of silly interactions between the characters before and after each level. The credited external writers weren't involved with the show but they seem to get it, and it makes this game feel more authentically part of the setting.

Speaking of the setting, the game looks lovely with varied environments and lots of detail in the backgrounds. The Donkey Kong Country-style world map helps give a sense of place and context to the levels, although it's far too zoomed in so you can't even see where the paths take you, which means a lot of trial and error to find levels. Trial and error on the map screen! What were they thinking!!

Shattered Crystal always got points for me by including a playable Sticks, but now that I've played it, it turns out it's a decent game as well. It feels more like a Sonic game than Rise of Lyric, but also shakes up the format a lot in ways that I like by encouraging exploration and interaction, even if it's relatively simple. I also think it does well specifically as part of the Sonic Boom series. I'm excited to see how Sanzaru builds on it with their second game!

i tried to make the dawnbreak slowly seem more and more inevitable, like how amy leaving elma and this world was, yk? cuz when we first see amy writing nautilus in the nautilus mv, you could assume it's around late june, so it's like well. when i finish the song plez hear. but amy's songwriting ethic kinda stretched the lyric-writing of both nautilus and elma to the last day of his life, 8/31 (which is when amy oofed himself with the emerald green, and obviously like it's too far gone yk. he was sitting on the dock by the time nautilus was finished. it's time to sing goodbyes and stuff) i tried to make the dawnbreak symbolizes amy leaving elma sooo yeah

The Master - 5 stars

yayyyy my yaoi movie<3 very first thing i watched this month and i have thought about it every day since which probably doesnt mean anything, or itll change my world forever just like boogie nights did. i gave a more proper review on letterboxd but i looove you movieyy i love the difficult and traumatized main characters in pta's movies freddie is really interesting to follow his relationship with lancaster so special to me they're so interesting dog/owner moment <33 and amy adams is really really good in her role they're all just. such interesting characters pulling each other into their lives and trying to take control of their lives and each other. trying to be free in a way nobody really can be... i love how the cult is never portrayed as being like a grift to the people involved, you can tell lancaster and peggy really believe in what they're doing there, even if they shouldn't. and freddie and lancaster are so in love and doomed <33 it's a bit strange to go "i think the relationship between the sex-obsessed veteran and the cult leader is really romantic" but it is likeeee. it is. anyway i love substance abuse i love tragedy i love mental illness i love when guy is a guard dog i love you moviey oh also laura dern is in this and i love her lots hi laura dern so sweetie why havent i seen blue velvet yet :-( she's very lovely in this and amy adams is so good, they all give all really excellent performances but i'm highlighting them

The Killing of a Sacred Deer - 4 and 1/2 stars

yay<3 also watched it with my friend yayyy so funsies also ok i get it now i wasn't totally fucking w/ lanthimos after the lobster (which i did like but i just felt like it wasn't very strong plotwise) i much preferred this though very much my kind of movie. colin farrell is so hot sorry and sorry but he and martin have a truly beautiful gay reverse-grooming manipulation thing going on i support 16 year olds manipulating married middle-aged men thats like my whole thinggg anyway yeah the family unit getting undermined and parental abuse/neglect and alcoholism and really strong stylistic choices w/ the cinematography and the monotone dialogue im obsessed with the dialogue in this it's such a good choice and there's so many long hallway shots <33 i love you hallways. the only thing i don't like is how hospital-oriented it is but like thats not an issue with the movie thats an issue with me yknow

doomed heterosexuality<3 alma is one of the top ten most beautiful women ive ever seen and shes sooo real so relatable, and what her and tom have is so tragic and romantic and it hurt to watch how they pushed-and-pulled against each other and each tried to be human in their own ways and even though the love was there they were so incompatible it just couldn't work they couldn't make it work. loved all the big open spaces it made it feel so empty and subdued, the score is beautiful, alma and tom's actors give such good performances and really it kind of haunts me. just really good. and sandra hüller jumpscare ily girl ive GOT to watch anatomy of a fall i need to See her

i don't normally do honorable mentions but today i will i also really liked But I'm A Cheerleader (4 and 1/2 stars) and Sorry to Bother You (3 and 1/2 stars) i love lesbians they were very sweet and it had shockingly good cinematography that i kind of didn't expect from it (my bad i thought it was going to be more like a silly romcom i guess) it was really lovely though. and sorry to bother you had such insanely cool art direction i didn't really enjoy the pacing esp. the last 30 minutes did not come across well to me and i honestly didn't like the ending, but it was a very creative movie visually and just other than that i liked it wish it just didn't lose steam at the end... ily detroit i loved her earrings the costume design was soooo good i also liked cassius of course too i liked a lot of it yayy movies

Aww, the first fic that came to mind was Love is a four-letter word, which is a coming-out fic featuring the Penderwick sisters Skye and Jane.

Just - the whole series is such a feel-good story? It tastes like childhood comfort and the queer undertones are way too obvious to be screwed over in the last book. Anyway, headcanoning all the members of the family as queer is self-care and those girls are so soft and such siblings and the fic makes me smile without fail every time.

Skye sighed again, but this time it sounded less annoyed. "Listen Jane, I love you" she said and it sounded almost gentle. "But I don't think I am the right person to talk to about this. Romance and stuff. I don't really... do... that. Can't you ask Rosy? I am sure she would love to help you out." "Rosy does not share a room with me, though" Jane demurred. "Lucky her" Skye murmured. "Probably sleeping right now." "Skye!" Jane complained. "This is serious! People die from heartbreak all the time; I need to know what I am dealing with." “Left – sharp turn!” The car swerved around in one swift motion and Mels grabbed onto the seat backs in front of her to avoid being thrown about. “Now right!” “No, left!” “What?” Amy turned around the chart frantically at the correction while Rory started panicking. “Which one?” he shouted. “Left!” Mels repeated at the same time as Amy cried: “Right!...Hang on, no wait, she’s right: left!” “What?!” Rory was hitting the wheel in frustration while, this time in unison, the girls called: “Left!!” Only a little too late Rory yanked the wheel around, making them all lean involuntarily towards the right. Mels erupted in laughter. “If we continue like this, this is gonna spell ‘Dorito’ when we’re done” she claimed. “Shut up” Amy growled. “You’re doing great, Rory.” “Yeah, he is” Mels snorted. “Now listen here, little lady” Amy turned around, her eyes pulled to dangerous slits. “Amy!” Rory shrieked before she could continue. “Where do I go next?!”

3. that encompasses my style

I don't knoooow. How do I know what my style is and what is representative?? Okay, I'll try, how about this from a WIP for my Division AU:

“Seriously?” Mels blinked. “You aren't even trusting me to get you a drink? I was kidding earlier when I said this would be a good exercise, but – I see that I was very wrong about your level of trust in me.” She tried to make it sound like a joke, but she couldn't deny, that stung. She would have expected herself to trust the Doctor more than vice versa, but a fucking drink? That shouldn't have been too much to ask. “Mels,” the Doctor was suddenly pressing the card into her hand, her gentle voice calling her away from her somber thoughts, “of course I trust you, love. I was making a joke.” “What?” Mels had trouble processing – and that was a little annoying because usually she was the one who got to make the Doctor malfunction with a well placed innuendo or affirmation of fondness. A smile was tugging at the Doctor's lips as she reached for Mels' other hand, closing it around the card. “You said I got to annoy you today,” she reminded Mels, “I'm just trying my best to live up to that role.” Mels let out a relieved laugh, grasping the card tightly and turning her upper hand so she could take the Doctor's and pull her in. “You are stellar in the annoying underling role, darling,” she promised, pressing a kiss to her lips. “It's like it was written for you.” The Doctor preened for a second, before the words properly registered. “Hey, now - “ she tried to protest, but Mels had already stepped away from her. “Find us a table, Doctor,” she grinned. “That's an order!”

I believe this encompasses my style, mostly for the way we move between jokes and heartfelt bits. I think I do that a lot - especially for this AU - putting in funny bits to even out the harsh reality and also putting heavy stuff into the lighthearted scenes to keep you on your toes.

Here, they've been joking around a little before, bickering (I cut that bc this is already too long a snippet - then again 'being too long' IS my style -), then Mels is hit by self-doubt, the Doctor turns serious to reassure her and they immediately go back to banter - and kissing.

The way dialogue is intercepted by introspection and a few descriptions of what is happening here is also representative of my style, I believe.

7. that i nursed in a daydream before finally writing

All my fics are results of daydreams, basically. But there are a few where I wrote down the dialogue as I dreamed about it and that didn't get changed much after. One of them is in Dance with Me (or: Selling the Cover for Gat) (part of the Division AU) and I know you have been meaning to read that anyway ;)

“Aww” Karvanista cooed mockingly. “You two are too cute.” The Doctor stepped back immediately, her hands leaving Mels’, and cleared her throat. “Just selling the cover for Gat” she said with a fake smile, smoothing down the sides of the fancy suit Tecteun hat gotten her for the occasion. “Right?” “Right” Mels agreed, but she couldn’t help a smile while she took a sip of her champagne. “Just that ‘selling the cover for Gat’ is not the mission, is it?” Gat’s snide voice sounded in her ear again and by now she sounded positively miffed. “That is only the very baseline of what you are supposed to be doing. You are supposed to be looking for the target. And you will find him neither in each other’s eyes like you have apparently been believing for the last 8 minutes, nor staring at cake decorations –“ The Doctor pulled an annoyed grimace and Mels bit her lips against a grin. “Nor eyeing up unsuspecting Malmooths” Gat continued. “Hey, she was definitely into it” Mels complained while the Doctor’s eyebrows raised to her hairline. “Literally not the point” Gat said. “Besides this is a married-only event, she was definitely here with someone.” “You spent your time without me flirting with other people” the Doctor inquired sternly, “and have the audacity to complain about me getting you a drink?! A fine wife you are.”

I spoke those lines (more or less) into my phone while taking a snowy winter walk <3 I should probably have paid more attention to the gorgeous nature than the Division team in my head, but no regrets :)

14. that was out of my comfort zone

Anytime I venture close to smut 😅 oh, also heavy angst. Which one do you prefer?

Let's go with the one leaning into smut. It's still mature level intimacy, I would say, but it was the first time I so much as brushed towards it, so, like, I didn't feel entirely comfortable writing it. I do think it is sweet, though (oh, this is from Somewhere in My Memory btw):

“Not here, Sweetie” [River] said with a wink. “I did not specifically order a bed to have you against a picture of my late husband.” “You ordered the bed?” the Doctor chuckled, slinging her hands around River’s neck. “Of course, you did.” “A lady has to be prepared” River said, kissing her again. “Come on then, jump up.” Without hesitation, the Doctor jumped, slinging her legs around River’s middle and letting her carry her towards the bed. “Oh, look at that, I’m taller than you again” she commented happily, leaning down to kiss River’s nose. “Now this feels right.” River rolled her eyes fondly. “Shut up, Doctor.” “Not a chance” the Doctor grinned. Then she yelped, as River squeezed her butt in retaliation. A devilish smirk played at River’s mouth as she lowered the Doctor onto the mattress. “We’ll see about that, Sweetie” she hummed, her hands cupping the Doctor’s breasts and immediately affirming her words in taking the Doctor’s breath away. “We’ll see about that.”

And like, that's literally it. The scene ends there. Still, that was daunting to write for me.

25. that i consider a favourite

Oh wow. I mean, choosing a favourite fic was already tough. A favourite SNIPPET? Impossible 😅 But, luckily, it is a favourite, so I'll just go with any snippet, I enjoy :)

Wanna read some lines in German about a ghost playing the piano? This is from Mary Shelley's Murder Mystery Invite Only Casual Travel/Journey For Friends Diary:

„Dann konzentrier dich weniger und lass dich mehr treiben“, schlug [Robert] vor. „Musiker denken nicht, sie fühlen.“ Mary wollte ihm nicht noch einmal erklären, dass sie einfach keine Musikerin war. So wandte sie sich resigniert wieder den Tasten zu. „Schließ die Augen“, riet Robert ihr. „Spür dem Gefühl des Liedes nach und lass dich fallen.“ Gehorsam schloss Mary die Augen, konzentrierte sich dafür aber umso stärker auf ihre Finger, mit denen sie die Tastatur streifte. Dann begann sie zu spielen. Sie merkte den Unterschied sofort. Hatte sie vorher nur einzelne Töne gespielt, hörte, nein spürte, sie jetzt die Musik, die ihre Finger wie von selbst in den Raum setzten. Sie lauschte der Melodie und merkte kaum, wie sie einfach die Kontrolle aufgab. Erst, als mit einem Mal die Musik verstummte, aber ihre Finger weiterspielten, erwachte sie unsanft. Sie riss die Augen auf und beobachtete entsetzt ihre Finger, die gerade wieder aus den Tasten auftauchten. Verdammt.

I do still prefer my German way of writing, I have to say. The fear of making mistakes is just less severe. With English, I am always convinced I have used at least one word incorrectly in every sentence without noticing.

But let's add another dw snippet from a WIP to this, shall we? I don't know whether I will ever finish this one, but I have started working on a very fluffy fugitive Doctor & River & Jenny piece called Family Outing (for now):

The Doctor made a move to hold her back but River intertwined their hands instead, pulling her in the other direction. “Stop fussing, Sweetie” she said strictly, smoothing down the Doctor’s lapels with her free hand. “And let her have some fun. Jenny is a clever girl, she’ll be okay. Besides, no one will suspect us coming here, so we’ll be in the clear.” Only now the Doctor took in her surroundings. They were on a spaceship, alright, a luxurious space cruiser to be exact. Aliens of all species and sizes were milling about, at least two thirds of them of the kind the Doctor did not want to see approach her daughter and at least half of them kinds the Division would engage. None of them were visibly carrying weapons at least and the Doctor knew Jenny had a knife hidden in her bigger-on-the-inside pocket and a blaster strapped to her thigh – in exactly the same spot where River was wearing hers. The evening menu of the adjacent restaurant was reading ‘pufferfish flambé’ and ‘Sontar wings with roasted Adipose’ and ‘We’re always ready to prepare your tag-alongs in your preferred manner’ and suddenly the Doctor understood where River had brought them. “No” she breathed, stopping dead in her tracks. “This isn’t…” “…the Harmony and Redemption” River completed for her, apparently very pleased with herself. “Told you, I was good.” “River” the Doctor pulled her even closer and dropped her voice to a whisper, her eyes flitting nervously between Jenny and the surrounding mass-murderers. “We really shouldn’t be here.” “Brilliant, eh?”

I just love River being cocky and the Doctor staring incredulously like "Do you want us getting killed?!"

I also very much love the way what I have written so far ends midsentence, and the sentence is:

Before the Doctor could decide whether shooting Flemming here and now would cause too much of a scene or could possibly be considered an overreaction

(Flemming dared to look at Jenny, so, no the Doctor's not overreacting at all <3)

Shadow: I don't do Trick or Treat.

Amy: Wait, what? Why? I would have thought you'd love it.

Shadow: ... It has become apparent to me that I am not a figure most children wish to see in a dimly lit doorway.

Amy: Ooooh, Rouge had you hand out candy.

Amy: When was this?

Shadow: A few years ago.

Amy: Where was she that she couldn't be with you? And where was Omega?

Shadow: She was bartending for a small booking in the club, and Omega always takes the day off as part of his 72-hour-

Amy: 72-hour horror movie marathon. I forgot he does that every year. Oh, Shadow...

Shadow: Since then, we leave the bowl of candy out front and join Omega.

Amy: Would you like to come with Cream and me? You're more than welcome to.

Amy: Absolutely! And Cream loves you- she'd be thrilled to have you with us!

The clip is both in JP and EN, I already had heard it, cannot for the life of me find it at the moment, but seeing as you are a pretty dedicated, analytical Sonamy shipper, I wanted to bring attention to its existence, and how it was previously believed it was just an unused asset, but now, with the DLC confirmed, there's a high chance there's gonna be a Sonamy heavy scene related to the DLC 💙💖

I haven't heard the clip in Japanese yet, but I had found it in English - not just the umbrella one, but the one where Sonic says "I should have made up my mind sooner"... mmh, about what, I wonder? 👀

From what I know, the mysterious voice clips in Frontiers (including the ones where Sonic is physically sick because of the Cyber corruption/erosion) are not "unused", merely very hard to trigger: you need to stay idle for 10 minutes. Maybe they'll patch them to not make them so obscure?

In any case, I'm glad that the DLC content will give Sonic Team a chance to include material they had to scrap due to development issues (because Frontiers screams "development issues", regardless of if you liked it or not lmao), but it's a bit too early for me to tell what the "new story" they promised will be.

Something about the way they framed the third image implies to me that they'll add a whole section to the part where Sonic gets completely corrupted: instead of the trio saving him after 10 seconds, maybe they'll go through an End Of The World-esque section in the Cyberspace, while Sage gets even more development. But it's just my theory and I could be wrong. I guess that it's what I'd do if I had the chance ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, truth to be told? I'm in no rush to see more of Sonamy in Frontiers, because while I don't particularly like Amy's arc, I sure like her interactions with Sonic. They're very chill and comfortable towards each other :) it's what I've been saying for a while now: they're just very close friends, mature enough to have morality discussions, supportive of each other, and Sonic even accepted Amy's hug <3

This is my vindication for that horrible scene in Generations where he's pushing her face away <3 yay, character development!

Id say andy started working there around/after the time amy got hired (which was before fry lela bender got hired). Farnsworth interviewed him but farnsworth was like half asleep so when the interview was done he was like snnhhghh 😴Huh wha..? Oh yes Thank you. Now leave me please. And andy ran out of the office shouting yipee!!! Yay!!!! and slipped on a random pile of water and got knocked unconcious. He woke up in zb's office Aww and zb was like So uh. Are you new here? and andys like holy shit you smell really bad what fucking happened. and then something really weird and beautiful started from there

I actually dont know anything about zb's sleeping habits. I think he would take naps a lot and sleep regularly. I think hed force me to have them but in a kinda chill way like comeon Go to sleep please -_-. thanks for this wonderful ask! unfortunately, i absolutely cannot share anything like that. i don't really draft/redraft/revise so even if I did change anything after writing a story, there is no record of it except my very spotty memory lol for the most part, my first drafts are my final product. i may tinker with word choices when I do the spag check but other than that, there aren't really many changes happening!!

the only thing i can think of that mayyybe falls into this category is adding 'a widower, at twenty-nine' to this paragraph

It’s easy to wear them all the time after Mary dies. For all intents and purposes, he is a soldier again, on a mission for revenge, learning how to fight a different kind of war. It’s a lot to come to terms with, fighting for something again, being a single father. A widower, at twenty-nine.

in i will be here. i had written the ending by then (yay, non-chronological writing) and i thought, hey, that might make for a nice symmetry/callback and i thought i was being so clever and then so many ppl ended up not even reading the first part 😞 i do think it was a good change/addition though!!

Since I'm going through my old FFnet bookmarks lately, in part checking to see which ones can also be found on Ao3 too these days, here's a rec list of fics that I first read on ffnet back when that was still my main site for reading fanfic. It's the first of what will likely be several lists.

The story descriptions are mine, not the original, so they help convey my impression of the fics.

The Muppet Contracts by Lucinda- A crossover between Angel the Series and The Muppet Show. When a less than reputable agent to the stars is brutally murdered, all signs seem to point towards Count von Count, a dangerous vampire who commanded the respect of Angel's grandsire, the Master. But not everything is quite adding up.

Has a prequel called Counts of Blood. Not long before the Slayer's arrival in Sunnydale, Count von Count visits his old friend, the Master.

They are both rated M by the author for violence, mostly (but not entirely) on the part of the Count who - though still a muppet with OCD - is very much a dangerous vampire here. And I'd say the second fic (the prequel) earns that rating a lot more than the first. Sadly these don't seem to have been migrated to Ao3 yet.

Accidental Drag Queen & the Undercover Detective by serafina20 - Jonathan Crane runs away to Chicago after escaping Arkham during a riot. After his first attempt to start over fails, he finds himself working at a drag bar and cultivating his own drag persona as Sugar. Unfortunately there's a very good chance that the attractive PI who keeps showing up is actually the Batman in disguise...

Rated M for sex later in the fic and for a sexual assault that takes place shortly before the start of the fic. This one has been migrated to Ao3 (yay!) and apparently has an in progress sequel that I hadn't known about (last updated in 2022), which is great since the first fic ends a bit abruptly.

Marching to the Beat of a Different Timeline by fandomlver - A BtVS and Sarah Jane Adventures xOver where Luke and Dawn meet at Oxford and their disparate worlds of aliens and demons collide head on. The fic is complete along with a completed sequel called Travelling in a Wibbly Wobbly Liney Whiney, where the Doctor, Amy, and Rory get in on the fun. The first fic is marked gen (it's really more pre-relationship), but the second fic has Dawn/Luke marked as the main ship.

Both have been moved to Ao3 and are rated T.

Soulworld by Philip S - First of a series. In 1907, Angel and Spike changed the destiny of the world when they invoked ancient magic to return the souls of the dead to every vampire in existence. Angel swore to protect his ensouled brethren and for the last 100 or so years has done exactly that. The arrival of a new Slayer in LA poses a threat to his people... but also an opportunity to save a young woman from the Watcher's Council.

There's a number of other fics in this series that can be found through the Author's page on ffnet, so I'm not going to list them all here. Looks like they're all rated M and none of them have been migrated to Ao3. It's a really interesting concept and I remember finding it quite well done. So far it seems to be holding up on re-read too. It's Buffy/Angel as the eventual main ship and, if I'm remembering correctly, some of the later fics include Faith/Spike as well.

Something More Important by serafina20 - The start of a series where Steve Rogers is a woman. Sort of. She doesn't think there's so much difference between men and women anyway, so what's the big deal if everyone thinks she's a man? Aside from the legal trouble, of course.

Steve's pretty genderfluid in this one and I think it was one of the first fics I read with a character where the genderbended character was giving off major nonbinary or bigender given how her relationship with gender is treated. Which, back when I hadn't yet figured out I was a she/they enby myself, surprised me how comforting and relatable it was to read.

Most of the fics in this series are rated M (some are T) and it is on Ao3 now too. It's both Steve/Bucky and Steve/Peggy ship-wise.

Writing a story with my EAH OCs because.. I was bored!

“Belindo Scale, please report to the headmaster’s office.”

“Ughh.. what now?” He grumbled. 

Ina chuckled and picked a rose petal from his hair. “Maybe because you ate the rose bushes again?”

“I-… ok, ya, I have no excuse,” he said with a sigh and stood up. 

“Have fun being yelled at.”

He smiled reluctantly. “Ya, ya.”

He stood up and went to the headmaster’s office. 

“Your boyfriend is a menace,” said a voice next to Ina. 

“Be quiet, Dally,” she said, exasperated. 

He fluttered his wings and rolled his eyes. “You know I’m right. He’s always eating the rose bushes and blowing up at students.”

“Hey that’s not tr- ehh…”

…….

A random student walks by Ina and Belindo. He lifts up a hand. “Hey guys! Have a nice day!”

Belindo felt a sharp ride in his blood pressure and turned into a long, white, slender Lindworm. “You interrupted our conversation!”

“AHHH!”

Ina had to grab him like a rope. “Belindo, stop!”

…

“Belindo!” The groundskeeper exclaimed. 

Belindo poked his head out of the rose bush, where  he was surrounded by dozens of other students, all snickering and laughing at him. 

“Stop eating the roses!” The groundskeeper screamed. 

Belindo looked around and realized how everyone was making fun of him. 

“YOU SERIOUSLY THINK YOU CAN LAUGH AT ME?!” He shouted, turning into a Lindworm. 

“Ah shi-!! SOMEONE GET INA!”

…

Ina sat there with her arms crossed, grumbled. “Ok, maybe he has some anger issues, but he’s going to Baba Yaga to get those sorted. You just need to stop making fun of him.”

Penelope Pan reached over and grabbed Dally. “Yea, Dally. Stop being a gossip king,” she said. She looked at Ina. “Sorry about him. He needs to learn to mind his own business.”

Ina smiled sheepishly. “No problem.”

Dally scoffed. “Whatever after.. you guys are just sensitive.”

After the class, Dally still hadn’t returned, probably being punished by Rumpelstiltskin. 

Ina headed to the courtyard where she saw Jillian Beanstalk and Ami Fear doing some climbing competition. 

“Hey! Jillian!” Ina called out. 

Jillian looked down and jumped, landing in front of her. 

“Ha! You gave up! I win!” Ami exclaimed. 

“Ya, ya, whatever makes you feel better, Ami!” Jillian yelled up. 

“I’m gonna keep climbing!”

“Have fun!”

Jillian looked at Ina. “What can I do you for?”

“Do you have any good flowers? I know you have lots of plants, and.. ya.”

“Oh, ya!” 

She ruffled through her pockets and handed her a couple of seeds. “Plant them and water them and you’re all good!”

“Thanks!”

“What are these for?”

“Oh, um.. it’s for Belindo.”

“Aww! How romantic!”

“Um.. y-ya. Anyways, I’ll see you later!”

She ran to the boys’ rooms and found Belindo’s. 

She hummed happily and pulled out her MirrorPhone and placed an order. 

In a matter of seconds, messengers birds dropped off a few packages. 

“Thank you!”

About 30 minutes in, the door opened. 

“What are you doing in my room?!”

“Oh. Hello, Dally.”

“Ugh! Ina. What do you think you’re doing?! Building something?! And there’s dirt everywhere!”

“It’s on Belindo’s side. Plus, I’m going to clean it all up. Be patient, fairy boy.”

He clenched his fists and steamed in anger. “F-Fairy boy?!”

“Ya. Now shhhhh!”

“Tsk. Fine!!” He went to his side of the room and began to tinker with some objects at his desk. 

About 30 more minutes later, it was done. She planted the seeds and sprinkled them with water. 

Almost immediately, an entire row of roses sprung up. 

She smiled brightly. And just on time, the door opened. 

“Ina?” Belindo said from behind her. 

“Hello!”

“Why are you-?”

“I decided to do something for you! Cmere!”

He walked over to here and then his eyes widened. 

“Ina.. you.. built me my own flowerbed?”

“Yep! So you won’t get in trouble anymore!”

He began to tear up and grabbed her into a hug. “I don’t deserve you!”

“Yay, so sweet, NOW GET OUT!” Dally yelled.

okok so my biggest one for blue lock is definitely REO. and here's why

reo lowkey has like attachment and abandonment issues (thanks nagi!!) and like .... ME TOO!! (cries in parental problems) so we'd both be like very attached to each other and wouldnt ever have to doubt if the other person loved us and much as we loved them. NO INSECURITIES YAY!!!

reo loves pampering people. its his love language. I LOVE BEING PAMPERED BC IT MAKES ME FEEL SO SPECIAL (again cries in parental problems lol my parents never made me feel special HAHAHA) (this post is actually js me trauma dumping)

reo is very perceptive to emotions and so am i ^^ im not too good with expressing how im feeling so having someone who can just tell is so nice

dad and i were just talking about how much we miss seeing your silhouette beside the soundbar every night before bed. two days you’re gone, my love, and i doubt it’s going to get easier as that count goes up.

anyway, i don’t want to well up your eyes if you ever get to read this, which i know you would, because you’d always been a nosy, nosy girl. it feels weird to talk about you in the past tense, but we know acceptance has to start somewhere… baby, if we ever overlooked anything, or if it ever felt like we weren’t urgent enough about your health, please forgive us. dad and i didn’t know what to do; we gave it the best we could within our means and i hope to god if he is ever real that you find it in your heart to let us love you still and more from where we are to where you are. we revel in the thought that you may no longer be with us, but you’re in a paradise where pain is as good as a myth and neck rubs are given by the second.

i’m sorry. i know i said i wouldn’t want to give you the blues writing this, but you gave us one too many great memories that it’s next to impossible not to at least shed a tear realizing there wouldn’t be additions to what you left anymore.

i just went to the bathroom. didn’t want dad to hear me crying again, if he sees me crying he’s going to burst into tears too. sorry, baby, dad and i are gonna try to be less sad. i’ll try to remember that when i found out i got a failing grade and was devastated, you were behind me with that empathetic eyes you always had — i knew you were sad for me too. dad and i don’t want you to be sad, not when you were here, and especially not now that you’re there and we can’t physically comfort you.

your sisters miss you, baby. bambi more so, you know you’re her baby. she misses being a big sister to you and sleeps in places you last slept on. they’re taking antibiotics too just like you did. and just like you they put up a hell of a fight before drinking the entire thing. we discovered vanilla flavored vitamins, which came in gel form. milo and bambi love it so much, we think they would trade us for a tube of it. we also got ahold of these breath mints, something we got to remedy milo’s insane mouth hygiene. i’m sorry baby but i think you would have benefited a way or two from that pack. hehe. i wish you lived for a little bit more to have tasted them. you would have shouted at dad for so long that he would have had no other choice but to give you more, you fat, fat girl.

milo’s appetite is through the roof. we think in a few months she’d be even larger than you were. bambi too. you should have seen it, baby, they could finish up two strips of lickables. we thought only you could do that! quick side note, milo just fell from the ottoman. your sister is so clumsy we don’t know what to do with her. when you visit us, could you catch her when she falls please? my brother in christ she’s fallen so many times we’re beginning to think she has elastic bones in there.

i had to pause writing, bambi just climbed up the bed and lay beside us. it’s been long since she last did this, did you tell her to do it? you sneaky baby. but thank you, we needed this so much.

tomorrow dad and i are getting our shots at the animal bite clinic. you left me quite the gift baby. i’m actually thinking of getting my bite marks tattooed — you know, something of yours to always be with me everywhere i go (even if it was incredibly painful to have sustained).

milo joined in and she’s grooming bambi at the moment. i may have to stop here to tend to them. i’ll try to write as often as i could. my semester starts in a little over a week so mom’s gonna be a busy bee again. we went from sais to amis, btw (yay!). enlistment is a little more convenient now so i got 19 units :) which is a ton of workload so idk why i’m even glad. hope i make it through the sem. you, bambi, and milo are my screensaver, so the “inspiration” part is well taken care of.

no really i wanna real quick chart out for you all stc amy's development. her introduction and early characterization is pretty typical for a lot of amy's writing historically... (21-23)

self-proclaimed sonic's girlfriend, damsel in distress, she needs protection. lalala. well while that characterization persists for a while, she DOES get her crossbow pretty quick! (24-26)

and with her first alt outfit in 41, she ALSO gets to establish herself as her own hero for the first time! yay! still tolerates sonic's bullshit though, but at least she knows he's an asshole

Around 50 or so they introduce her iconic heart shirt + plaid skirt combo. this is also around the time sonic's personality gets a little more hammered out into being Explicitly Insecure (funny enough that first Really comes out because amy and tails are complimenting knuckles lol)

but unfortunately shes still very lovestruck by this jagoff

but by 76... shes getting sickavit!!

she's also firmly established at this point As A Hero! around 90ish is i think when she starts going on all her little adventures with tekno. 127 is when we get the complete retcon of her backstory to Always being a badass, and it's pretty integrated into her character here in 129

to the point where amy being a damsel is simply. not canon anymore! lol! anyway at this point shes had plenty of time (with teknos help) to grow into the little judgy dyke shes Meant To Be, which leads to this moment from 131 that i ADORE

January 2022 reads

So my reading year isn’t off to a stellar start, but whatever, life is A Lot™ and we’re all headless chicken running around ✌️ anyyyyyway, here’s what i did manage to finish in january (shout-out to @logarithmicpanda for organising the rereadathon i did not post about, but definitely participated in because yay rereads!)

* Memento by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (reread) - listen, i need more AIDAN in my life and i do what i can to get it. Watch me go completely unhinged when the 10th anniversary of Illuminae comes around

* City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare (reread) - my plan was to reread the last 3 books in the Mortal Instruments series, because it’s been years, and i picked this up, mistakenly thinking it was book 4, discovering halfway throughout the book that it was actually book 5, even though it was WRITTEN ON THE COVER. whatever, shut up, it was the book i wanted to read anyway so all is well. Did i continue with book 6? no, because i’m a mess

* The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware (reread) - listen, i love thrillers. I LOVE THEM. they’re easy to read and they get my brain going and they’re just fun. so will i reread all the thrillers i own this year? mayBE WHO KNOWS

* All Your Twisted Secrets by Diana Urban - see my previous statement. This was the only new release i read this month, it was silly and far fetched, but you know what? I read it in what was practically one sitting, so I. Don’t. Care.

* An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir (reread) - i’m rereading the entire series because I want to finally read book 4 and i remember exactly one thing: that Helene is a boss ass bitch and if she dies, I will fucking riot. Anyway, read this series if you want amazing writing, great plot, TWISTS, stellar world building, and a female character that puts Aelin to shame (yes, HELENE)

all in all, not great, not terrible, but i am pleased

i do realise that none of what i’ve written tells you anything relevant about these books, but i think you should read them anyway ✌️
