#anyway. these are my more thinky thoughts about the drake vs. kendrick situation

overall, i actually do feel like the early drake disses touched much more closely to the core of a lot of problems with kendrick's whole persona -- which is a persona (no matter how much he criticizes drake for having one, he has one too). kendrick highkey the poster boy for aspirational activism, his songs used as captions by ppl who do a lot of instagramming but not a lot of actual substantive change. -- a super valid and real thing say, esp with the way kendrick HAS built his career off being some socially conscious rap messiah who is working through the trauma of being Black in America, of home violence, etc. and yet still engages in the braggadocio and cult of hypermasculinity and violence in his lyrics (even now, with that "first time a shot a drake, its not the big three its the big me, he realized a beard is a better look on him, etc."). but instead of saying alla dat, drake said that kendrick was acting like he's trying to free slaves -- an insult slightly aimed at kendrick but mostly aimed at the audience drake considers stupid for not nodding along to his club bangers. kendrick's very real problem with misogynoir even as much as he reps black women, but also upholds the violence against them by refusing to hold account RK or Kodak or XXX. the fact that apparently kendrick has "known" about drake and his crew's supposed pedophilia, the videos, etc. but is only using this moment to put it all out there! could even be an issue drake raises! but he doesn't. instead he doubles down on the wife beating allegations, which sound all the more false because drake hits on said wife in the same breath. fucking wack.
