this is an absolutely incredible piece of artwork, but why are we calling it a persian or turkish rug? this is, as best as i can tell, a stunning recreation of an afghan rug, neither persian nor turkish.
hani rahnaward, the artist, is an afghan whose art explicitly deals with violence in afghanistan. beyond that, the art very much resembles an afghan rug: key characteristics are its rust color and the bold, geometric patterns.
our cultures aren’t interchangeable just because the west has decided we all fit into the same “aesthetic”. do your research & learn the difference.

#kind of torn between ‘this isn’t that big of a deal it’s just in the tags’ and ‘what do you MEAN persian and turkish rugs’#tagging both of them too like……… come on now pick a struggle#anyway. op likely just tagged them for exposure or whatever but this still pisses me off. also imo knowing that the artist is afghan and#this is specifically an afghan rug adds so much more depth to the piece#and also i think op tagging just exchanging afghan for persian and turkish is just like. on its own not a big deal#but its representative of the way the west thinks about the region as a whole which is frustrating. yay orientalism!#art
