i have a lot of complicated feelings about Fucked Upness as portrayed in fiction, and about my reactions to it both conscious and visceral, and i think a lot of it comes down to how so often my relationship to a piece of media is informed by pointing past the text at the author and going 'i see you back there you punk ass bitch'
#general fandoms tag#the crit files#whosebaby talks#i can tolerate; and lean into; some real heavy shit in a piece of fiction /if/ the author has earned my trust re: how they frame it#which does not require a Big PSA Disclaimer or a hayes-code unhappy ending as punishment for Wickedness#if anything some of the worst offenders i've ever had the misfortune of coming across have been media that /does/ try that#but if the author breaks that trust with the kind of framing that makes it clear they don't think it's a horror#whether they don't understand that it is what it is; or understand and think it's a /good/ thing#suddenly the layer of 'this is safe because it's not real' that makes it bearable; even cathartic; is gone#and you're left with the fact that a person who is very real; and their beliefs which are very real#thinks that that kind of na/ked unvarnished cruelty is right and fine#or at least justified#and that context brings the horror of the real thing's existence crashing home in a very different way#i can enjoy and even find my own peace in dark; dark; dark shit plenty if i trust the author#whereas if the framing is fcked even 'minor' things can trigger the hell out of me and haunt me for years#anyway this applies to a lot of things but ToA and LL i am looking directly at you lmao
