sci fi media will rlly take an obscure real animal and pretend its not a real thing that exists.. 'desert mouse' that is a jerboa.
#said this on instagram saying it here i acc hate this trope so much#esp when its a real animal thats super overlooked/in need of conservation#either get more creative with your made up animals or use his real name. or even better use its name in its native language#jerboa is an arabic name and it means meaty thighs btw#altho googling its so hard to find the names ppl used for animals before colonisers 'discovered' them#i do love hearing abt projects aiming to compile and record native peoples knowledge of their wildlife & environment incl the names they use#its fascinating & the world is better off for it#its fine for animals to have more than one common name also bc scientific names were invented for this reason & are a good thing#but its a shame that their original names have been pushed aside and id like for more to come back#anyway tangent aside. a jerboa is a jerboa. dont sci fi wash my beloved little guy
