like yeah tcsm is about teens getting owned by a cannibal murder family but it was also genuinely commentary on the social economical and cultural schism in america in the 70s u know what im saying. the family is doing bad things in the name of survival and trying to continue a lifestyle, but obviously someone like evil mcsheriff in the remakes is a great deal more sinister than like, bubba in the original being like ): why are there people breaking into my house, and hitchhiker being like, check out my sick photos. do u not like them??? ofc in the game you have like, johnny and sissy who bring more of that sinister real shit serial killer vibe. whereas the college kids have their sort of noble goal of finding their missing friend and it's obvious the family did smth terrible to her. but there is always the discussion to have abt why the family is Like That.

anyway tcsm the point of it all is the visceral, ugly discussion about moral perception and what you'll do to protect yourself and the people you love and what you perceive to be normal and necessary and right. how u were raised and how u see the world. all this 2 say i'm thinking abt leland who i typically pitch as A Generally Good Boy With Good Intentions snapping for even just a moment, and paralleling the brutality that the family deals him and his friends. when there's the perception of needing to protect the people he loves he'll fight and tbh he has the capacity to kill, even if he's not sure he does. "i promise i'll kill them for this" ???? boy is unhinged upon finding maria's body and i like 2 think about it narratively.
