DWTS 28 week 5: Disney Night
Pretty cool opening number shot at Disney World. Those costumes are totally not recycled.
Oh, it’s also timely advertising for Disney+
Sailor and Val Viennese Waltz (Cinderella) I think Sailor has the looks for Cinderella. She still looks very stop and go. She was a lot better, softer and wasn’t flinging her arms about as much. But at the end of every bar she would still just stand still, maybe hold her arms up to get into hold. The vwaltz steps were done well. She just still needs to stop seeing each step or bar as discrete. 8-8-8 T24
Karamo and Jenna Samba (Lion King) I thought he started okay, then after the group number he kinda lost it. He also needed better bounce and hip action. I still feel he isn’t projecting energy as much as he can. He isn’t dancing big enough for his size. 7-7-7 T21
Kate and Pasha Jazz (Mary Poppins) Very simple but fun dance. Makes me wonder how much jazz Pasha has ever done. I honestly wondered where he had gone in that group huddle at the end. 8-8-8 T24 scored for execution, not so much technique (not that Kate put a foot wrong). But it’s jazz so.
Lindsay and partner Quickstep (Toy Story) Well, tempo wise that was tame for a QS. Some stumbles, but Lindsay isn’t really skimping on the choreo. She makes him do actual quickstep steps, in hold. And he does them okay enough to get passing scores. 7-6-6 T19
Ally and Sasha Contemporary (Beauty and the Beast) Okay, Ally’s forcefulness in her movements were exposed again. Though she didn’t look very flaily, unlike what we’ve seen before. Sasha, as much as I love him, isn’t the greatest contemporary choreographer. This dance looked like some freeform ballroom partnering with a lift here, a jump there, a roll. I wonder if also they wanted those specific costumes because I think it limited the range of movement they could do. 9-9-9 T27 Uh, no. this is NOT a 9-worthy dance. Even considering contemporary is easy for the judges to overscore (oh you showed emotion? you were perfect!) there have been way better contemporaries before. And in this season alone, there have been some dances in previous weeks that were way better than this dance. JUST BECAUSE YOU SHOWED SOME EMOTION DOES NOT MEAN YOU DID A GOOD CONTEMPORARY. You don’t even need emotion to do a contemporary. Eesh.
why do we need a frozen 2
Lauren and Gleb Samba (The Little Mermaid) Oof. This dance was not good. It wasn’t like, a hot mess. But it looked awkward and weird. Lauren was moving very trepidly. She went off time (which you wouldn’t expect of a musician). She was unbalanced. She didn’t have any hip action and she did not have bounce, dunno what CAI saw. She was still very stop and go, and Gleb’s choreography was adding to that. I mean, there were samba moves but Lauren did not get the samba style at all. 8-7-8 T23 No way should she be higher than Karamo. They are equal at best.
They are doing WHAT to High School Musical?????
Kel and Witney Jazz (High School Musical) Did I enjoy this dance? Yes. I loved Kel’s energy and he owned all those party moves he did in the middle. The song suited him. As a critique though, this dance looked like it was made by high schoolers, if you take out the tricks. I guess they ARE supposed to be high schoolers. But I feel like Witney could have done better. 9-8-9 T26 Really Len? Ally’s barely-a-contemporary gets a 9 but Kel’s somewhat-a-jazz doesn’t? What’s this agenda for pushing up the ladies for?
Anyway, hen will they use more DCOMs on Disney night? There’s a missed opportunity here. Instead they use songs over and over and pressure people to live up to former contestants.
Hannah and Alan Foxtrot (Aladdin) Very nice from Hannah. She was smooth and didn’t have her usual hard-hitting-ness. Alan kept her moving, didn’t give her a chance to have that stop-and-go quality a lot of the ladies are having this season. Fog covered the footwork; she was unbalanced in some of the turns. But to be fair, Alan gave her lots of turns and switches. This rendition of the song was very weird. 9-7-9 T24 What’s Len’s problem? I think this is the first dance tonight that would have deserved all 9s. It was a LOT better than Ally’s and had for better choreography.
James and Emma Paso Doble (Pirates of the Caribbean) Just a thought, our first and only prior Pirates paso was Riker’s, yeah? and That was, wow. This dance was close to being a ‘wow’. I feel like James was very caught up in the feeling and character and drama of the dane that he lost a bit of his usual finesse. His footwork felt a bit heavy. Maybe the boots? I feel like his body shaping could use fine-tuning, sometimes it was there and sometimes it was just off. But def the best paso this season so far. 9-8-9 T26
Anyway, James is really HANDSOME. Just needed to get it out there.
Elimination time. Was it live votes during this week’s show + this week’s scores? Cos then only the east coast folks got to vote. ugh. And we’re so overtime that the credits are already rolling before Tom and Erin even announce the first safe couple.
Oh hey, but at least there were no camera mishaps this week.
So they just save everybody because it’s Disney and they wanna be nice and all and they don’t have time to slowly call out names one by one anyway.
Okay, thoughts? I thought there was some real gross overscoring this week.
