the thing is that like the 8 episode season where each ep is one hour to an hour and a half long IS good IF. if if if. BIG IF. if it's a one season only show in the first place. if the whole story is contained and it is clearly over at the end of the very last episode and it was INTENDED to be that way not just rushed bc it got cancelled. that goes hard as hell. u binge the whole thing and feel hollow at the end and then start it all over again. but doing it with a show that is clearly intended to continue is crazy. if I'm supposed to sit with these characters for multiple seasons and I'm supposed to watch them develop and grow and experience the epic highs and lows of high school football then I NEED silly exposition episodes. I need episodes where people just talk and the action isn't really there. there needs to be a balance between jam packed crazy ep and slice of life ep where the characters get a breather and go on a goofier adventure. the 20 ep season format gives the characters time to become PEOPLE instead of just like. a guy on a screen. do u know what I'm saying

NEVERTHELESS Garden already seemed super promising like 6 minutes in and I'm sooooo glad to hear it follows through... his character reminded me a lot of Shizuka in The Travel Nurse right off the bat (highly positive sign, that's my wife) but also Whore With A Terminal Illness is one of my favorite tropes... it's 'sad funny' to me because throughout the show, Our Japanese-Filipino Bestie vito constantly tells his love interest that he'll become a stronger person and he'll become better to protect her- yk that whole spiel. the problem with this is that Even Literally Hours Before He's Due To Be Executed For Murder, he's still telling her this when it's like... throughout the series Literally Every Episode or every other episode he's crying and having to rely on other people. there's nothing wrong with crying or needing help but he never sticks up for himself or does thing on his own, he ALWAYS ends up getting help or needing help.

the one time he DOES stand up for himself and protect her he's being punished for it Aka Being Put On Trial For Murder and it just leaves a really weird taste in my mouth. usually when you watch a show or movie you're waiting for some kind of character development but for our guy, it's not really there and it's just kind of sad to watch. but funny because he keeps saying he'll get better. but mostly sad.

i think i understand the angle of 'being a foreigner/perceived as a foreigner in japan is so arduous it can make someone not want to put in the effort, or theyre too scared to'- a type of Learned Helplessness right. but he's our protagonist: we're meant to see him stand up to these prejudices and want to advocate for himself, and tell us 'hey, just because things ARE this way doesn't mean they should be and it's right'. it's only because of kazuma (our Spoilers Korean-Japanese friend) that he's able to be acquitted for the death penalty- a penalty he wanted to accept because of the murder he committed (btw the guy he killed was the biggest jackass ever. like irredeemable. like he got vito in jail years ago and kidnapped him prior to his murder and wanted to put ANOTHER assault charge on him)

i get really itchy thinking about it.... korea and the philippines were both persecuted by japanese imperialism Thats A Fact, yet SEAsians are treated MUCH more differently compared to east asians. it's kind of funny (sad) how asians dont like each other and that there's almost a list of ethnicities more likely to get harsher treatment right- but i guess im getting off topic. it is something that was itching the back of my mind the entire time watching though

this ask is already nine hours long so i'll say i REALLy enjoyed wish. i already said so in my past post LOL but ill say it again in that i love crime stories, yet an aspect of crime stories that always get excluded or aren't as looked at in-depth is the family of those involved, whether they're the criminals or victims' parents. wish does a wonderful job at showing that off, and it was just a grand experience watching this family have to cope with all the bullshit goin on around them while simultaneously trying to figure out what happened to their son AND what's the right thing to believe.... was very epic to me....

Chapter 4

Chapter Characters: Severus Snape, Female OC, Evan Rosier, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Lily Evans

Severus's mind filled with voices, so many that it was hard to tell what they were saying. He's dealt with these voices before, they normally speak to him one by one but sometimes they all start speaking at once and it causes him such great stress. These voices always tell him the same thing to give in to the darkness, to end it all but he never listens to them cause Lily is always there for him, she makes the voices go away simply by being near.

Tho she isn't the only person who could keep the voices away by being in his presence, no there was another person who could rid the voices from within his head. "Severus" well speak of the devil and he shall appear. Severus looked up tears streaming down his face, the voices that had filled his mind completely vanished at the sound of his savior's voice. "Evan" Sev said softly and quickly stood up "You came" he added as he practically threw himself into Evan's arms. Evan wrapped his arms around Severus and smiled "Of course I did, you said you needed help" he spoke softly. Severus's mind was at a complete blank, he had forgotten everything that had happened minutes before Evan had arrived. Sev always seemed to forget about his panic attacks when either Evan or Lily showed up, for some reason they both made him forget about everything that happened before their arrival.

"Oh yeah" He said quietly and removed himself from Evan. "So is everything alright?" Evan asked as he was still concerned about his friend, Severus smiled "Yup, I had what Lily calls a panic attack but it's fine now. Oh I got a surprise! Come Come!" He said excitedly and practically ran inside the house. Evan followed him inside all his worries having faded away the minute Severus smiled. The pair headed to Severus's room where a certain little girl was sleeping in. Once they reached their destination Severus slowly opened his bedroom door and quietly stepped inside, Evan followed suit and slowly entered the room "So what exactly is the surprise?" He asked in a whisper sensing that it be wise to not make a sound. Severus walked towards his bed and smiled "I have a little girl!" He shouted out in a whisper excitedly as he pointed at the little girl who was fast asleep.

Evan stared at the girl in complete shock "How the hell did you get a kid?" He questioned. "One night stand" Severus said quickly, Evan knew for a fact that that was a lie. The girl looked nothing like Severus and as far as he was concerned Sev never had any interest in any sexual activities. Sev always told him that sex was a waste of time and that he never saw the appeal in it anyways, later in their friendship Severus had declared he was asexual something that Regulus had brought up during conversation. Severus had also declared he was aromantic the very next day after he had spoken to Lily, now he was trying to figure out why his friend would lie about having sexual relations with a random woman. If Severus ever had to sleep with a girl Evan was certain Sev would sleep with Lily or her Sister, tho Severus and Petunia aren't exactly friends but they're civil to one another. Evan can tell that the little girl looked nothing like the Evans sisters, and the idea of Severus getting drunk and having a fling was out of the question. Severus never felt comfortable with drinking anywhere except within his own home and only drank when he was alone, on some occasions he'll drink with friends but he'll never drink any hard liquor.

"So did this chick just leave her in front of your house?" Evan asked, he wanted to know how Severus really obtained the girl but he knew Severus would never tell him. "Her mom died, she wrote in her will that I would gain custody so the cops brought her here" Severus said, he knew Evan wasn't believing a single word he was saying and to be fair he didn't care. The only reason he was saying such obvious lies is because Evan has no clue that he's Nevermore and he wasn't going to tell him anytime soon. "What's her name?" Evan asked, his mind still trying to figure out why Severus had this girl in the first place "Her name is Clair, tho I might get it changed I haven't decided yet" Severus said happily "I know you don't believe me but that's the story you're gonna tell people when they ask why I have a kid, okay" He added as he turned to look at Evan. "Okay" was all Evan said, he had a hard time saying no to Severus when staring into his eyes.

"So what is it that you need?" Evan asked "Everything that declares her as mine" Severus said in a serious tone. Evan nodded and the minute he did so there was banging on the front door that caused Severus to flinch violently "Oh god I'm gonna die" Sev said quickly and carefully picked up Clair and ran into the bathroom "Make them go away" He said as he locked the bathroom door. Evan shook his head and exited out of the room making his way towards the front door. The banging on the door continued which seemed to make Evan angry, he grabbed the door handle and forcefully opened the door "What!!" He shouted out angrily. "Where is he?" James said with just as much anger "I'm not telling you a damn thing until you calm down" Evan said as he crossed his arms. James sighed heavily and forced himself to relax "Where's Severus?" He asked as calmly as possible "Upstairs in his room in the bathroom, you got ten minutes to talk before I kick you out" Evan said as he stepped aside to let James in.

"Alright" James said as he stepped inside and made his way to Severus's room. Once there He stepped inside and looked around "Severus we need to talk" He said loud enough for him to hear but not enough to startle him. James heard movement and the bathroom door swung open "Hi Jamie" Severus said cheerfully as ever "What brings you here?" He asked jokingly. "Where's the kid Severus?" James said in a tired voice "What kid?" Severus questioned which caused James to groan. "The little girl Severus, you took her after you killed her parents and then you sent me a picture with the caption Fuck the Police" James said quickly "Hehe that was funny, she's in the bathroom I was giving her a bath because I forgot why I ran in there. Imma keep her and name her Yulia" Severus said excitedly while giggling softly.

"You can't keep her!" James shouted out "But I wanna have a kid!! I want her to be my kid!!" Severus shouted out with tears forming in his eyes "She needs to go to an orphanage Sev, you can adopt her later" James said hoping to keep Severus from crying, last time he made Sev cry Lily was practically poisoning him when he was in the hospital after being shot by a thief. Luckily Severus forgot about the incident and was confused as to why Lily was killing him so she stopped. "But I already have her!!" James watched as tears fell from Severus's eyes and before he could say anything to calm him down he felt a dark presence behind him. James slowly turned and came face to face with a very angry Lily "Hey Lily" he said slowly as his body filled with fear "L-Lily" Severus said sadly as he cried softly.

Lily glared at James and rushed over to her best friend "Hush now Sev" She said softly as she hugged Severus. Her attention soon returned to James "I think it's time for you to go" She said and snapped her fingers. James gulped unsure of what was gonna happen next but that was soon answered when he felt someone grab hold of him and drag him out of the house harshly. He felt himself get thrown out the front door and land on the cold hard pavement "So this is you handling the situation" James looked up to see Sirius smirking. "Shut up" James said as he stood up and dusted himself off "Dude you are terrible at talking to Severus, seriously you'd think you learn how to keep him from crying after last time" Sirius said while laughing.

"He won't give up the girl, says he wants to keep her but when I told him that he could adopt her he said no cause he already had her" James said softly "He really wants a kid huh, sucks that it won't be her" Sirius stated

"What do you mean it won't be her?"

"James we found out the girl's has a Aunt who lives in America, once we get her back that's where she's going. Severus won't see her again" Sirius said softly which caused James to sigh deeply "There's no way that Severus will give her up. What do we do now?" James spoke as he turned to look at Severus's home. "We let him keep her and fake the girl's death, I know someone who can help" Sirius said excitedly "So help me god if you call your brother for help I will-" James started but was interrupted "End me uh huh sure, don't get pissy cause my brother dumped you for someone better now come on let's go home and figure out how to keep Lily from poisoning you again" Sirius stated and grabbed hold of James before making his way back to their home. James sighed and allowed his best friend to drag him back home hoping for the day to end.

The issue with Matt is that he always cleans shit out - him and his wife have both tweeted and liked pro-Trump shit in the past that I personally wasn’t able to screenshot before he deleted them and because people are very... let’s just say he’s been getting a free pass for years. However, I personally think there’s enough without those receipts to cancel him, so... without further ado.

He deleted the rape jokes, but here’s the tweet apologizing for them. I’ve also been informed the set he did that day wasn’t the only time they occurred, however, I still can’t find the receipts for that. 

He was part of the joke that got Dominic Sherwood cancelled / his offense came from the fact that Dom did it on LIVE. (Also I want to add that Dom is LGBT+ himself (according to multiple interviews with him), and while anyone offended by it is justified. I personally think Matthew not getting canceled while he’s straight (also something Matt’s said himself multiple times) is an even bigger issue y’all have been brushing under the rugs for years). Edit: I also was reminded of his behavior in the apology video following it, and him not apologizing for his part / him lying that it was not Dom during the stream as well.

His All Lives Matter BS -- and a former Black fan’s reaction to it, because their opinions on it count WAY MORE than mine. This other former fan also goes into shit I hadn’t even been aware of in their post / their replies so I’m gonna link it too. Also please note that his father resigned from office due to controversies surrounding the program's racial profiling. Given the deleted liked Tweets and shit, this fact makes his all lives matter shit look even worse.

Edit 4 (8/23/2022): I’ve been thinking a lot about this post over the past couple of months. It’s reached outside of the community I made it for (the Tumblr roleplay community), and honestly? While I stand by the fact I feel people should be informed about the actions their faceclaims do and decide whether or not they want to continue using them based off of their own morals, and I encourage people banning fcs that make them uncomfortable, the amount of toxicity I’ve seen this community extrude due to this post makes me extremely uncomfortable. Put Matthew on your banned lists, block people who use him if that makes you comfortable but do not harass anyone over this post. I do not condone harassment, and I loathe the fact one of my posts is causing harassment towards people who enjoy him for some reason. I don’t even condone people sending mean messages to Matt, for that matter.

Use him as a faceclaim, or don’t, block people who disagree with you if they make you angry enough you want to engage with them, but most importantly try to walk into these situations with more kindness then I showed in this post. Matthew will continue to be on my banned list, but going forward I will not be updating this post or responding to anything regarding it unless it’s a “Matthew apologized / took accountability for xyz” update because honestly? I don’t have the time and energy to keep up with people I’m not a fan of. It’s not worth it. okay so it’s… not a liveblog since i already read it but yes here are the highlights of THE GRACE YEAR BY KIM LIGGETT

warning for brief descriptions of many kinds of violence and sexual violence under the cut because kim liggett despises women and wants you to know it!

tierney james lives in a society where women have no rights

every year, all the 16-year-old girls are temporarily banished to the wilderness for a year. if they survive, a few lucky chosen ones among them get to get married off to men in town who choose them (the women have no say)

all women have awful lives. they aren’t allowed to congregate with other women. they aren’t allowed to dream or hum or enjoy sex. their husbands can have them banished or executed for any reason. all the girls and women have to watch other women get executed or whipped or punished in some way at least once a month on the full moons

men claim that women require constant supervision and discipline to keep them in line because they could be harboring secret magic. in theory, the point of the “grace year” is to give the girls a chance to burn out their magic before they come back to civilization

but the magic isn’t actually real, and at least the men who run the town are well aware of that

anyway. tierney sets out for her grace year

she discovers she’s unusually prepared to live in the wilderness because her dad prepared her – her dad is super nice and the narrative never considers for a second that he might be complicit in the harms done to these young girls :) so she does stuff like building rain barrels to catch fresh rainwater because the well water they’re supposed to drink has gross algae in it

but the other girls, led by mean ringleader kiersten, start becoming violent and bringing over the misogynistic rituals from their village into the grace year camp - like cutting off fingertips and cute stuff like that :)

tierney stands up to oppression so they kick her out of the encampment lol. bitches amiright? 

the fear with being kicked out of the encampment is not about having to find food and shelter from wild animals. the main fear is Poachers. so on the outskirts of the main society, exiled women are forced into sex work serving the husbands of the village (yup! really!). those women and their children make up the outskirts community. and the adult sons of that community become poachers – and their prey is grace year girls. poachers lurk around the grace year encampment for girls who have run off, and they try to murder and dismember the girls and sell their body parts back to the city. their body parts are then EATEN as fertility potions and aphrodisiacs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so tierney’s like real scared of poachers lol

except weird thing, this one poacher keeps saving her life. this happens twice

then it happens a third time but she winds up knocked unconscious. and she wakes up naked and strapped to a table with some dude using a knife on her

she’s real scared and assumes she’s being skinned alive, because that is what the poachers do! 

she’s too drugged to resist but over a period of weeks she regains consciousness enough to learn that he was just preventing her from freezing to death!!!! and the knife? well he was cleaning her wounds. with a knife. somehow that’s supposed to make sense. i’m not sure either.

they build up a rapport and i bet you know where this is going

she falls in love with the fucking poacher :) 

basically she develops sympathy for him when she learns that this PROFESSIONAL GIRL-HUNTER unfortunately LIVES IN POVERTY and therefore DESERVES HER COMPASSION

also poacher is a slur lol

it’s weird that she’s so forgiving towards him because she hears him talking to his friend and they both call women “it” lmao

but who am i to say what is and is not romance

here’s a little snippet of tierney falling in love with him :) 

and this is a weird aside that the book definitely did NOT need, but for your own edification, turns out that in the outskirts community, the men do have sex, but only anal

so anyway this nightmarish misogyny of the main character falling in love with a man who literally hunts teenage girls lasts for maybe a hundred pages

they have sex. even though tierney is likely to get burned at the stake if she returns to the village and her new husband discovers she’s not a virgin. so that’s pretty cool

but eventually tho, another poacher discovers that tierney’s lover is harboring prey and he threatens tierney by telling her he’ll kill her lover if she doesn’t return to the grace year camp right away

she does, because his safety is soooo important to her

again. this man hunts teenage girls

but back at the camp, the girls are super crazy still

oh but one thing tierney learned is that the well water they drink is poisoned and so she thinks if she can get them to stop drinking poison, and to drink from the stream instead, they might get better

see her poacher lover was soooo helpful

back at the camp, the girls are all freaking out that a poacher appears to be creeping around and stealing stuff. tierney assumes it’s the friend of her lover’s who threatened her. the girls at the camp want to just kill her as a sacrifice or something, but tierney convinces them to let her go into the woods to deal with him instead

she does find who was responsible. it turns out it actually wasn’t a poacher at all! it was a guard who she knows who used to work on her family’s estate. he’s a stalker and thinks all girls are whores. it’s not very clear what’s going on with him, but anyway, he dies

but then tierney gets back to the camp and omg the girls have killed a poacher while she was gone!!! tierney freaks out because what if it’s her boyfriend!!!!

it wasn’t, but she still flips out that they very wrongly murdered a woman-hunter

literally cannot believe it. i literally just cannot believe it

HE WAS GOING TO KILL THEM AND SELL THEIR BODY PARTS FOR PEOPLE TO EAT AS APHRODISIACS

BUT YEAH. THEY’RE WRONG FOR KILLING HIM IN SELF-DEFENSE

tierney has this whole awakening that the poachers are victims of the patriarchy too sdhgiasodghaisdg

her one friend at the camp convinces her to go back and find her poacher lover and live with him in the woods forever

oh yeah her sisters are going to get banished to the outskirts and be forced into sex work as soon as they get their first period. but it’s worth it so she can be with her poacher lover

anyway she goes back into the woods, but not before her main bully, kiersten, has a confrontation with ANOTHER poacher

yeah poachers are people too guys

speaking off poachers being human. her lover dies. he dies a hero, protecting tierney

so she goes back to the camp and makes up with the girls

put yourself first girl worry bout yourself

ANYWAY! their grace year is over and finally they get to return to the town! but there’s a roadblock before tierney can move into her husband’s house: SHE’S PREGNANT, AND SHOWING

yep! she’s been pregnant for at least four months. the book saved this news as a big reveal

no wonder her friend told her to go live in the woods with her lover forever

she is sure to be burned at the stake

and actually tierney is down to get burned at the stake because then she’ll be able to speak her piece about how she feels that the grace year is bullshit with a whole audience listening. (she notes that bodies take a long time to burn, OMG TIERNEY FIND A BETTER WAY). 

but when the village realizes she’s pregnant and everyone is like “BURN HER!!!”, her new fiance heroically intervenes and fakes this whole thing about how actually the baby is his and he wants to marry her anyway

tierney’s like, um, well i really wanted to get burned at the stake, but…….

that’s right. she decides to live and marry this guy all so the poacher’s family line can live on

anyway tierney’s sort of excited to be friends with her new husband but as soon as she tells him the pregnancy wasn’t from rape, he throws a temper tantrum and goes to chop down some trees to cool off

bummer

but all is not lost! she makes up with him and she realizes she can love both him AND the poacher lover

and the baby too, one presumes

tierney really has quite a good life for a society where women aren’t people, i have to say

anyway, soon enough she gives birth. in excruciating detail i might add

as soon as the baby is born, tierney realizes that all this time, when she’s been having dreams about this girl with a red birthmark helping her save her people, those dreams were about HER FUTURE DAUGHTER

tierney names the baby grace

she’s literally seventeen years old

and that is the end of the fucking book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so to recap: men who buy women as sex slave wives? are actually kind and loving souls. men who hunt women and dismember them and sell their organs? also kind and loving souls. but teenage girls being fed poison water? those girls are bitches. tierney doesn’t care about them lol
