Season Two Episode Ranking
Warning: I get very, very, very, critical in this ranking. Like, angry ranting that’s almost laughable. Should I be getting this worked up over an online series? Eh, probably not. But this is my life and I’ll get outrageously angry over whatever media I want.
Seriously though, this is all just my personal opinion. I’m not saying you have to agree with me and if you like the episodes that I don’t then that’s perfectly fine.
I tend to overthink things a lot and I spend most of my time analyzing every little details of this series because what else am I supposed to do at work?
So yeah, this ranking is definitely less positive than the one I did for the first season. But I hope y’all can still have some fun going over it! And if anyone does their own rankings be sure to tag me because I’d love to see them and see how mine compare!
Anyways, enough of me acting like this is more important than it is, on with the ranking!
I can’t believe season two only has 12 episodes. Now I went ahead and counted Moving On as one episode in this ranking since my opinions on both parts are pretty similar, but sweet cheese and fish this season started on September 1st, 2017 with Fitting in and right now is left on Putting Others First which came out on May 1st, 2020. And as of me writing this it is now May 2nd, 2021. It’s been a whole year since the last episode and we still have no idea when the finale is coming.
Like, bruh.
Also remember how the longest episode in season one was only about 15 minutes long and the shortest one was barely four minutes?
Well the shortest episode in season two is Crofters- The Musical which is 8:42 seconds. The longest episode is Putting Others First which is a whopping 51:09.
And I wish I could say that the writing was on the same level it was in the first season, but there’s a reason I put that warning up there.
Well, enough stalling, let’s get this ball rolling.
#11 Embarrassing Phases
There are no words in the English language that can describe the sheer amount of hatred I have for this episode. If I could rank this any lower, I would, which will happen once we finally get the season finale. I don't know how that episode will go but it'll definitely be better than whatever dumpster fire this was.
Like, okay. I have some positives. Roman, Patton, and Virgil's costumes were cool. I won't lie I live for vampire Virgil. And the message about embracing your past "phases" and exploring how they helped made you who you are. That's neat. I like that.
And that's it.
My biggest gripe with this episode is Virgil. He just acts like a complete bitch in this! And I don't mean that in an endearing way he's literally so mean for no reason!
He's all "You guys are trivializing my past!"
In response to them going "Hey Virgil, we're glad you're part of our group now and are proud of how far you've come!"
Like okay, even if it was insensitive to call it a "phase" literally there was no reason for him to get as angry as he did.
Just a simple; "Hey, I don't like it when you refer to what I went through as a phase because it feels like you're not talking it seriously."
Isnt that what this whole show is about? Communication???
It wasn't fun watching him just insulting the others, it was annoying!
Like poor Patton, just trying to help and be encouraging, only for Virgil to keep treating him like dirt.
What did I miss here? Virgil was fine in the last few episodes, so what the heck happened?
Oh and let's not forget the great advice Thomas offers Patton at the end of the episode in regards to handling Virgil: "Don't do anything to get on his bad side or else he'll do bad things to you!"
Okay I'm paraphrasing here but that's basically what he says! And since Virgil is supposed to be a representation of anxiety, this is a horrible message!!!
What happened to finding healthy ways to cope with your anxiety? What happened to keeping it in check so it didn't take over your life?
Yeah I'm definitely gonna make a full post about this one episode later because there's a whole lot more to unpack here. But yeah -10/10
#10 Putting Others First
There is just way too much going on with this episode. They try cramming so much in here that I don't even remember more than half of it.
I remember the opening song, then the Lilypadton fight and everything that happens from there. That's it.
And those are the best parts of this episode, but even that has problems because everything with Janus feels like a completely different episode.
Also the whole way they try to teach about morality is all over the place. How did we go from choosing a wedding over a callback to deciding whether or not you would die for your friends to self care is important?
And while the video game sequences, while utilized well in some places, were way too distracting and it felt like they were just trying to shove as many video game references in as they could.
You could take out just about all of them and the episode wouldn't change. Everything they were used for could have been done just through having the characters talk to each other, and knowing this makes the fact that this video was delayed for so long because of it just makes the whole thing worse.
Like the animations were well done, and I don't want to downplay the hard work the animator did. They were just doing their job after all.
But the trolley scenes (especially the second one) hurt my eyes with all the flashing (would have been nice to have some kind of warning for that) and some of the voice effects (especially on Logan's) were grating and distracting.
I want to rank this episode higher, but it has almost zero rewatch ability and honestly besides the ending, when I first watched this episode I was just kinda let down.
#9 Crofters- The Musical
Okay look, the song is a bop and I adore the fact that Logan and Roman got two episodes in the spotlight, but it's just kinda "meh" to me. Plus I get just a tinge of second hand embarrassment but that's just me.
And I know this is kinda unfair but another reason why this one isn't higher is because of a couple of things. One is that they set up some angst for Roman, he's clearly not doing well and Thomas thinks the best thing to do is tell him that he might get his own jam flavor.
Then he does, and instead of following up on that little plot point from this video, they just rushed out a commercial and completely ignored and potential story telling or character development for Roman.
So yeah "Return of the Jam" is the main reason why I don't like this one as much as I used to. And I actually just got an idea for a new post comparing these two so add that to my to-do list.
#8 Fitting In
I actually skipped this one during my first official watch through for one reason and one reason alone: I wasn't allowed to watch Harry Potter.
But I realized that my parents wouldn't approve of me of watching a gay man's content either so I just said screw it.
And luckily I understood enough Harry Potter references to get what they were talking about and honestly, this episode is a lot of fun.
It's a good follow up to Accepting Anxiety, and a nice way to kick off season two. Virgil is finding his place among the group and everyone is trying their best to make him feel welcome, it's really sweet.
And of course we get the new costumes (which i hadn't even noticed that they were wearing their old costumes at first) and I dunno it just gives off season one vibes and it makes me happy.
#7 Moving On Part One/Moving On Part Two
Yeah honestly my thoughts on both parts of this episode are the same. What can I say? It's really good.
This definitely one of the more emotionally heavy episodes in the series, and we see the characters at their lowest for really, the first time in this series.
I adore Patton's room and how each side gets their own corners. All the little details they add in, including the changing picture in the background, it really gives off that nostalgia feel they were going for.
What I love most about this episode is how (unlike some other episodes) they actually let the emotional moments sink in and don't throw in a joke immediately after. Like the ending is bittersweet, sad almost, and I love that they stuck with the mood up until the episode ended.
Not to say there weren't some jokes here and there (mostly in the first part) but once the mood shifts and things become more serious they let that mood stay. And when there are jokes they all work really well.
This is one episode I've actually watched the least out of season two, so it'll be interesting when I go watch it again to see if any of this holds up.
#6 Why Do We Get Out of Bed in the Morning?
Honestly I only put this one above Moving On because Logan and Roman are my favorites.
This episode is actually one of the weaker ones, which hurts to say because again, favorite characters, but goodness it's all over the place. It feels like a precursor to POF and not in a good way.
Logan and Roman just basically argue back and forth throughout the whole episode, never seeing eye to eye with each other, to the point where I think think the writers realized they couldn't find a way to get these two to agree so they just had Thomas step in and be like, "You guys make a really good team!"
Dude, were you even paying attention? They never even reached a conclusion on their own. And even though they have their little moment at the end, it's all kinda ruined when nothing in their relationship changes.
Yes, in Learning New Things About Ourselves, they acknowledge that there's more work to be done in regards to them, which makes sense. People aren't going to suddenly change overnight.
Yet despite having come to some kind of understanding with each other twice now (both here and LNTAO) in the following episodes they still act like they hate each other! Heck Roman is downright nasty to him for seemingly no reason and I don't really blame him for it.
More like I think the writers just don't know how to develop their relationship and just aren't as interested in them as the others. Logan's been reduced to being Mr. Exposition and apparently Roman's personal issues aren't enough for him to carry a room episode on his own because they felt the need to introduce two new characters before he finally gets it.
Sorry, what was I talking about? Oh yeah, the episode.
There's some funny bits here and there and the little animations are cute (even if unnecessary) but really it's only saving grace is being Roman and Logan centered.
Even though they felt the need to include a cameo from literally every other character because apparently no one has any faith that Logan and Roman can carry an episode on their own.
#5 The Sanders Sides 12 Days of Christmas
This episode is just pure fun. Look, I'm not a big fan of Christmas, even less of a fan of Christmas songs, but my gosh this episode almost makes me appreciate the season.
The way they're all just bickering the whole time, being very confused, and how there's just so much personality from each character even when they're not talking/singing and just being in the background is *chef's kiss* perfect.
There's so many fun little details to pick out during the song and it's fun to go back and watch how each side reacts to different things.
#4 Selfishness vs Selflessness
Gonna be real, this used to be my favorite episode. Until my overly critical brain started finding all kinds of problems in the writing department but I think I’ve been negative enough on this post so I’ll save it for another time.
Janus steals the show in this one, it’s his first official appearance since his debut and he just soaks up the spotlight. It’s refreshing to have an antagonist in the show again, and he’s the perfect foil for each of the original Sides.
He knows how to play into Roman’s insecurities, know how to feed into his ego and get him on his side. He’s in direct opposition to Patton, who believes that everything Janus represents is wrong. He’s able to silence Logan and take him out of the conversation, speaking over him most of the time.
And I guess he and Virgil have some beef I dunno.
The courtroom scenario is fun, and I love how Janus is the only one who sees how ridiculous it is (even though it was your idea in the first place, Jan) and everyone else seeing it as perfectly normal is hilarious.
I do like some of the more dramatic moments in this episode, especially that final bit with Janus questioning Thomas until he finally gets him to admit the truth. It was intense and reminded me of the scene where Janus confronts Roman in a similar manner.
While far from perfect this is still a good episode and I can find a lot to love about it, like Janus in a suit.
#3 Dealing With Intrusive Thoughts
This episode scared the shit out of me and I loved it.
Okay it didn’t actually scare me. But I stayed up to wait for it to be posted, which wasn’t until 2 or 3 in the morning. So by the time I finally watched it I was half awake and not expecting anything that I witnessed.
The result was me being terrified of Thomas with a mustache and it prevented me from sleeping. I was over it the next day though and had Forbidden Fruit stuck in my head all day. Which isn’t good when you’re running the register at work and you can’t stop singing it.
There’s a lot of reason why I love this episode, Remus being the primary thing. His entrance is iconic, the first few notes from his theme play as he creeps up behind the TV, him smiling at Roman all creepily until he whacks him over the head and knocks him out for most of the episode.
Then we get the song, Forbidden Fruit, which is just great. Slight secondhand embarrassment but seeing the finished product and all they put into it, I can’t help but love it.
Still miffed that Janus hasn’t gotten a song... specifically a villain song... I won’t ever let that go...
Logan is another highlight in this episode (no surprise) and seeing him go head-to-head against his polar opposite without batting an eye was interesting since I was kinda expecting them to show Logan having trouble dealing with Remus but nope. He handled it like a champ and I love them both.
Now I am kinda wary as to how they’re going to handle Remus in the future, especially with the intrusive thoughts aspect. It’s a sensitive topic and they’re already screwing up anxiety. But Remus has only been in one episode so far which means I can’t make any solid judgments until he’s appeared in more episodes, so I’ll have to wait and see.
All in all, great episode! Definitely deserves to be in my top three.
#2 Learning New Things About Ourselves
This episode made me feel so nostalgic. I freaking love puppets and grew up with Sesame Street and the Muppets, so I’m probably biased towards this episode but to me this is really one of the better written episodes.
Perfect? Heck no. But really, really good.
I love that we get to explore a bit more with Logan and Roman’s characters, in a lot of ways this is kind of a Logan episode which has him standing against the other Sides, and it’s really interesting to see just how different he is compared to the three of them and it could just be me but it seemed like he’s becoming more of an outsider and isn’t as close with the original four as he used to be, and this episode is what really kicks that idea off.
I can also relate to the “Well that’s nice but what do you do for a living?” message, except in my case it’s more like I want to quit my “real job” to pursue what I’m passionate about while people tell me it’ll probably never happen or “Yeah that’s a nice hobby!” So this episode really struck close to home and I just have a lot of sentimental feelings towards this one.
I love all of the designs for the puppets, they all just fit perfectly and I wouldn’t mind seeing them make a comeback one day. I know that’d be difficult since they’d need a professional to puppet them but hey, one can dream right?
And oh my gosh the song, it just gives off the same feel from Sesame Street and Muppet songs with it’s jazzy feel. And I won’t lie I flipped my lid when Logan and Thomas were in the same shot together. We hadn’t seen any of the Sides share the screen with Thomas yet and the fact that it was Logan, and he was arguing with Thomas and they were singing over each other? Ah I love it!
Also don’t get me started on how Logan’s bit in the song sounds more villainous than the others. I’m not saying anything just a neat little observation.
I have a lot of happy feelings attached to this episode, so despite the few problems I have with it I could never bring myself to hate it. The only one that tops it is...
#1 Can Lying Be Good?
The episode that started it all. The one that caught my attention and sparked my new fixation on this little series that I had just glossed over before.
I really don’t know what prompted me to watch this episode, other than I wasn’t in the best place and it just happened to pop into my recommendations one day and I figured, “Huh, haven’t watched this guy for awhile. Let’s see what he’s been up to.”
Once the episode was finished my first thought was “Holy shit when did this series start having lore?!”
This episode is probably the closest thing to perfect out of all the season two episodes so far. The writing is clever, pretty much all of the jokes land, and oh my gosh the editing in this one is phenomenal.
The way they show Roman shifting between himself and Joan throughout the episode is what sticks out the most. Having Roman’s voice coming from Joan, or having them briefly change back to Roman, I love it so much.
Not to mention Thomas’s ever changing shirt that reflects what he’s thinking/feeling is a neat little detail.
Did I mention this episode is hilarious? The ridiculousness of each scenario that they act out, with all the little inputs from Logan and Virgil who are both trying their best to do their jobs besides not even wanting to be part of it in the first place is adorable.
And of course, the man of the hour, Deceit. Or Janus as we now know him as.
Is it weird that I like Deceit more as a name? Probably, but that’s just because I don’t like how early his name was revealed.
Okay that was my last negative comment. Promise.
Now since I hadn’t watched Sanders Sides in a while I didn’t notice anything off about “Patton” during my first watch. But going back after seeing the rest of the series helped me catch all the little hints they added to clue in the audience that something wasn’t right.
A lot of it is really subtle, mostly in the acting department, but once you’ve caught on to everything it makes you wonder how you didn’t notice the first time. You can even see Logan and Virgil throughout the episode, knowing that something is off with “Patton” but holding back their concerns until Virgil finally calls Deceit out.
I’ve rewatched Deceit’s reveal so many times. When he finally drops the act after Thomas makes up his mind not to lie, you can just tell he no longer cares whether Thomas knows or not. Then things get even more tense when Logan is silenced, and everyone knows what’s going on except Thomas.
The music starts to build up, Thomas is flipping out, then after Deceit taunts him again he finally demands to know what’s going on and BAM there he is!
I love everything about this.
Like, what else can I say? This episode is brilliant. It really shows exactly what this team is capable of when they’re at their best. The pacing, the build up, the writing, all of it combined together to make the perfect episode.
Season Two has been, interesting. The long waits have caused some problems with the pacing and characters, not to mention the departure of Joan from the writing team with new writers entering the room, not to mention the first welcome now unwelcome arrival of Asides, and with only the season finale left before season three, it makes me wonder just where this series is headed.
I know this series is capable of doing incredible things, season one is still solid and it really holds up even after all this time. But season two just feels like a jumbled mess. Sure, it’s easy to enjoy the episodes individually, but once you try to fit them all together it’s like trying to jam a puzzle piece into a place where it doesn’t fit.
The best way to describe this season is as an experimental season. Each episode has the team trying something new, sometimes it seems these gimmicks take precedence over the story itself. Of course, some of these can work to the episode’s advantage, while others are just distracting and you’d know you wouldn’t miss them if they were gone.
It’s a mixed bag that’s for sure. One that has me watching in morbid curiosity as I wait to see whether it’ll crash in the end or blow my expectations out of the water. It really is fun to analyze these episodes, and yes I know I can be very harsh but believe it or not this is how I engage with media that I love.
My hope is that team will learn from season two and try to take a more simple approach with their production once season three roles around. Because if they continue at the same pace they are now I doubt there will be many people around to see this series through.
And on that note, that was my ranking of season two! I’m actually kinda excited now to go back and rewatch everything, I hope I don’t have to wait much longer to do so but that all depends on when the season two finale comes. Whether it ends up exceeding my expectations or just being “meh” I know it’ll be interesting regardless and I can’t wait to see just how they plan on wrapping this all up before the final season arrives.

Promptober-2021: How to Handle a Nico: Kwanon
Primary Paring: NicoMaki Words: 650 Rating: G Prompt: Vintage Parent Fic: How to Handle a Nico Time Frame: Late in Maki’s college career and early in Nico’s production career
----------
Author’s Note: Prompt for Oct 7th
Summary: Nico finds something of Maki’s while they unpack
----------
“Ne, Maki-chan.”
“Mm?”
“What’s Kwanon?”
“A camera… wait,” Maki stood up from the box she had been unpacking before turning to her girlfriend “why do you ask? Did you find my Kwanon?”
“Seems the movers thought this dirty old box belonged to me.” Nico said, turning the box to reveal its label.
“Be careful with that…” Maki stepped forward and reached toward the box.
“Obviously.” Nico huffed. “Something this dingy has to be an antique and thus should be handled appropriately.” She let her girlfriend relieve her.
“Vintage, actually.” Maki corrected. “It has to be 100 years old to be considered antique. This was made in 1933.”
“Close enough.” Nico shrugged. “So, a camera, you say?”
Maki nodded. “It belonged to my great great grandfather.”
“Can I see it?”
“I suppose we’ve been unpacking for a while now.” Maki decided. “We’re probably due for a break.”
“Probably…” Nico rolled her eyes.
Maki ignored the intentional jab and knelt to set the box on the floor. “These were made by a company called Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, founded here in Tokyo.” She explained, gently opening the box. “It’s the company that eventually became Canon, a couple years later, named for Buddhist bodhisattva Kannon.”
“Huh…” Nico was fairly certain she would forget those facts within the hour. “Oh, so it wasn’t just a camera.” She commented, leaning in to get a better view of the multiple smaller boxes and what looked like several albums.
“No, this one the camera.” Maki retrieved a worn, but still sturdy, leather case. She snapped open the fastener and slid out the device.
“That’s it?” Nico blinked.
“What do you mean?”
“That doesn’t look all that different from what I might find from a generic Google search for 35mm camera. Just…” Nico paused to find the right word “older. Blockier. More angled or whatever.”
“Mm… You’re not wrong.” Maki conceded. “But this one is special. Not only is it one of the first, but there aren’t many out there in the world, and this one has been in my family for multiple generations.”
Nico nodded. Though her own family did not have any cameras that had been passed down, there was no shortage of photos, so she could understand the nostalgia.
“Is that why you like Canon cameras so much?”
“That might play a bit into it.” Maki shrugged. “But even with the nostalgia, I wouldn’t buy them if they didn’t work well.”
“May I see some of the pictures?” Nico asked, unwilling to pass up an opportunity to learn a bit more about her girlfriend’s family.
“Of course.”
The couple ended up spending over an hour browsing the collection of photographs. Maki pointed out various relatives, particularly those who worked at the hospital. But there were also several cousins and uncles who served in the war as ranking officers, a lineage of lawyers down in Kyoto and a handful of politicians. The Nishikino name really was full of wealthy and prominent public figures.
“Aren’t those your parents?” Nico suddenly asked as Maki opened a newer looking album.
“Yes.” Maki affirmed. “We’ve long held a tradition of taking pictures with this camera.”
“You mean it still works?”
“Built to last.” Maki replied. “Built for repair, not replacement. We’ve kept good care of it through the years. And if you haven’t noticed, it’s been a wonderful way of tracking the family history. Though it is getting harder to find film these days.”
Family… wait…
“So… will I end up in one of those albums some day?”
“Nico-chan is pretty much family at this point.” Maki smiled. “We did just move in together, after all.”
Nico felt warmth in her chest at the prospect of being considered part of Maki’s family.
“In fact, we could take a picture now, if you want.” Maki offered. “Here in our new home.”
“Yes, please!”
“Alright, let me find a roll of film.”
----------
Author’s Note Continued: I realized after posting in the Discord server and rereading before posting here that this may seem to imply that Maki inherited the camera from her parents who have passed. That is not the case; they’re still around. However, with the 4k character limit, I’m not sure I could have included a bit of exposition about how the Nishikino tradition is to hand down the device to each generation *as they move out* not as the prior one passes.
My own family has done this with a piano for a handful of generations, as well as several, much smaller and more mobile heirlooms.
Anyway, for anyone wondering, here is Wikipedia’s pic for the Kwanon camera:
It really does just look like an old 35mm camera; nothing special, in and of itself. And the same could be said about my family’s piano. But, it’s not the item itself that is important, it is the memories it invokes that hold value.

Home, Again: Chapter One
A/N: Soooo, if you know me at all you know that thick Bucky is my religion and I love him with all of my heart. These new pictures of Sebastian on the set of ‘Devil All The Time’ have got me twisted. Literally I’ve been fawning over them for days. That man is too much for me and my libido and this is the product of that.
Word Count: 2k+
Rating: This particular chapter is pretty mild, lots of cursing mostly- the next chapter, and the ones to come after that will be extremely explicit though so get your bodies ready.
Summary: Moving back home was never in her itinerary, but after the loss of a family member and being fired from her job, she finds herself back in the town she grew up in and face to face with the man who’d haunted her teenage wet dreams. Now in her early twenties, maybe she can do something to make those dreams a reality.
A Plus Size Reader x Dad!Cop!Thick!Bucky Barnes story
It’s a surreal moment for you- waking up in your old room. The one that you’d grown up in, that you hadn't spent more than a couple nights at a time in- in the last six years.
Like some weird, out of body experience. Looking at the ceiling through blurry, sleep bogged eyes, with the sun shining clear and bright through the curtains fills your stomach with nostalgia that makes you feel like you might barf.
You sit up, trudge to the bathroom, half feeling like you’re about to get ready for school or something- about to but on your Volleyball uniform or something.
While you're brushing your teeth you can't manage to drag your eyes away from your reflection. The bags under your eyes, that are ever present, seem to be deeper. Probably from all the moving you’d done in the past couple of days.
Picking up your entire life, and moving it from Brooklyn all the way back to Springs Port had not been easy.
Luckily your friends had been game for the three hour drive, and the little bit of heavy lifting(Pietro and Quill we’re life savers) when it came to your bed and room furniture. You’d sold your couches and tables. You didn't have your own place anymore, didn't know when you would again and since you we’re currently unemployed, you could use all of the extra cash that you could get.
That was you:
Living back at home. Job less. And broke- because you used that almost all of that furniture money to rent the U-Haul.
In that moment, with those harsh truths, you can't manage to look at your reflection anymore.
After taking a shower and getting ready- contouring and highlighting and concealing all of your self hate away, you do feel a bit better. It was a coping mechanism, yes. But You needed to be presentable anyways, you think.
You’re fine. You are fine, Y/N. Everything’s fine.
If you keep repeating it, and accept it as your reality, you’ll feel better, right?
You linger on that thought as you eat breakfast, which is a definite perk of being back home. Your grandmother stands near the stove- a pan hot and the kitchen full of the delectable smells of not only the omelets she was stirring up, but the crock pot that had who knows what already brewing.
Also, the ever present, and pungent herby smell of marijuana that followed her ever since her accident undercurrents that.
It sure beat the instant oatmeal you used to eat mornings back in the city.
“That smells so ridiculously good” You start as you slide onto one of the chairs at the kitchen bar “Also, good morning, Grams”
“Good morning, baby bird. You’re up early” She comments, as she gives you a knowing side eye “Or did you not sleep at all last night?”
There's honestly no use lying to her. She’d always had this sixth sense when it came to that- it had made your childhood a bitch.
“I slept. A little bit” you defend yourself, pouring yourself the cucumber orange juice she’d made. Sounds weird- is actually extremely refreshing. She likes to make weird concoctions with the fruits and vegetables she grows in her garden.
You get another one of those all knowing looks.
“Okay I didn't sleep as much as I could have, but I was just getting everything else unpacked. I’m finally done” you punctuate with an innocent shrug.
“You unpacked all those boxes? Y/N Y/M/N, there was about twenty of them. You’re not supposed to get unpacked in 24 hours, you need to give yourself time to process this change in your life. I really thought that indica was going to help. You should’a been knocked on your ass” She tells you as she plates up your food and sets it in front of you.
You thank her, and bite your tongue about the whole “processing” thing. She’d been all about that lately- since Grandma Vee died a few months ago and she’d started her group therapies; she’d become some kind of self made, self help guru.
You figure it’s better that then her falling apart.
You’re all kind of waiting for her to fall apart.
“I was thinking i’d go into town and job hunt today” You bring up the topic softly, both of you most of the way through your spinach, bacon, mushroom and goat cheese omelet.
She tutts at you, of course she does.
“I invited you to come back and live with me, I’m not expecting you to pay for anything, you know that” You love the way she words it. You wonder if she really thinks of it that way, that you’re here for her benefit and not the other way around.
“Grams, I get that I really do. But I have like fifteen bucks to my name right now. Even if it’s just something part time, I need to work” You tell her, in complete seriousness.
You’d had a job, steadily, since you were fourteen years old and the broke bitch life wasn’t for you.
She fussed, tells you that you that she is very capable of helping you with whatever you need. Promptly informs you that Grandma Vee’s life insurance will hold both of you down for a long while.
You don’t get how she can talk about her death so easily. Calm and level headed. It’s still that iron hot pain that comes from losing a loved one that burns for you. You’d felt it before and yet it didn’t dull one bit this time around.
“Yeah, that’s gonna be a fuck no from me. You have to use that money for you, grams. You know she’d want you to” is your blunt reply and she chuckles and throws her napkin at you as you stand.
“You watch your language in my fucking house, girl. You’ve always had such a bad potty mouth”
It’s inherited, you don’t tell her.
With a few more words of dissuasion from her and a kiss on the head and the reassurance that you’d still help her with her garden, even if you were working from you, you grab your keys and walk out into the already hot, New Jersey air.
--
It’s summer, mid June and Spring Port is and has always been a resort town. Sea side and picturesque- people flood in during the summer season.
It doesn’t surprise you that the towns square is currently a tourist trap and that parking is hard as shit to find. No matter, you find a space eventually.
Your turquoise Jeep Wrangler is the same one you’d driven before college, that you hadn't taken to the city with you. It has some issues sometimes- the starters a little finicky and has to be worked on every six months or so, but it honestly still runs like a charm. Can get you from A to B just fine now, and you guess it is way better than subways and busses.
You end up walking around the entire towns square, and you’re glad you’d gone with slides instead of wedges. Everyone seems to be hiring, tourist season and all. And in the end you fill out four applications- handwritten at that which you think is a little funny.
It’s not that Springs Port is tiny really- with a population of 12, 000, there are definitely smaller places. Towns square is actually pretty decently sized- about twenty five or so tiny stores and restaurants scattered along main street. There’s a theater. Three gas stations. You guys don't have a Walmart in the towns perimeters technically- but there's one just a few miles away. And everything's waterfront, the docs a skip away. The Atlantic a continual backdrop.
Compared to New York though, it’s a blip on the map,. It feels smaller to you now that you’ve lived in the big wide world.
You’re walking down the cross of Harbor and Main- on your way to Goodies- which you hear Angie now owns, to meet Wanda and B for lunch when your feet get stuck where you are.
Frozen on the spot.
As you look at the flower shop, that’s overflowing with greenery across the street.
Infinity Flowers-
You can't help the draw to the store. Your feet seem to have a mind of their own- and you end up inside before you can really think of it.
Hell, it smells just like it used to. You haven't stepped foot in here since…
It’s pretty busy in the shop- it always was though. Best flower arrangements in the whole Garden state was it’s slogan, and it only exaggerated a little.
“I’ll be with you in one sec- Oh! Y/N” The bleach blond head that belongs to none other then Mantis bobs as she comes over and envelops you in a tight hug “I heard you we’re back in town! I was wondering when you we’re going to come in. I haven't seen you in so, so long”
She says all of this without letting you go and you chuckle and endure it because this was Mantis. Always such a hugger.
“Yeah, I was just job hunting in town and I thought I’d stop by”
“So you’re back for good then, yes?” She asks, after letting you go. Going to greet another customer warmly, while still managing to small talk to you. She’d always been good at making people feel at ease.
You tell her not really, just for the moment, as you fix the hydrangeas in the window display. They have them all wrong-
“Those we’re always her favorite” Mantis tells you what you already know and you nod and swallow the bit of sadness that bubbles up.
This. Is why you tend to stay away from this store. Thoughts of your late mother assault your psyche here, always- but also...you can't help but feel like you’re supposed to be here. Some of your happiest childhood memories we’re in this shop, surrounded by flowers. You can recall the sound of your mother’s laughter best here…
You leave the shop, after you’ve filled out an application.
You don't know why you did it but-
“I’m pretty sure I just got a job at Infinity Flowers” You inform Wanda and B, who are already sat at a booth in the little pub waiting for you when you get there. Sharon couldn't get a break from the station to come, but you couldn't hate her for it. She was just living her dream.
“Really?” Wanda asks, attempting to choose her words wisely “That's- I would never expect for that to be where you’d decide to work”
“What she means; is do you think that’s a good idea? There’s ghosts for you in there girly” B, Brunhilde(she’d kill anyone who used her full name though) has always been the bolder one in your group of friends. And that would never change.
“Mmm, I don't know what I think. Wanna day drink about it?” You suggest with a shrug as you go to wave down a waitress. One of their house made hard lemonades we’re sounding real good right now…
“Bitch, some of us have to go back to work” Wanda argues while B excitedly agrees, telling you that she’s already started.
Two and a half house lemonades later you are sufficiently buzzed and feeling better. Wanda has to get back to work at the antiques gift shop though, you you leave Angie a hefty tip(or rather your employed friends do) and head out.
It’s hot as hell, honestly and you think you might go sit on the beach for a while until you sober up enough to drive- you’re telling your friends that when you see a patrol car roll up to the bakery on the corner.
Out of the driver's seat exits one Bucky Barnes. AKA your teenage wet dream.
And holy god, does he look good. He’s flanked by a tall dark skinned man who you don't recognize, but who is also pretty damn fine.
You know you’re ogling, and your friends are laughing at you and taunting you, but in that moment you really don't care.
“Hot damn, he is still so fine, oh my god” You groan and Wanda chuckles as she lights up a cigarette.
“Yeah? The dad bod doing it for you?” She questions on an exhale of smoke.
“Totally. Is it possible that he got even more attractive? Like? How? And why did Sharon not tell me about this” You try to pull your eyes away from him, you really do.
But you’re a little drunk and the feelings you’d harbored for the older man come trickling back. Yeah, he’s gained some weight. Is broader- his shoulders big. His whole frame hulking. But he still has that swoon worthy dark hair, and that jawline you could see even from here. You wonder if his eyes we’re still that stormy blue color that you’d spent literal years dreaming about...You desperately wish you could go up and take a closer look.
“He’s really been hitting those doughnuts since the divorce, huh?” B snarks and you turn a cold glare at her.
“Don't body shame him. That’s disgusting” You snap and she holds up a hand.
“Jesus, you know I’m just kidding. I forgot how fucking touchy you are about him” She defends herself and you try not to go on a rant about how talking about anyone's body, male female or anyone in between.
You end up doing it anyway and the whole time Wanda grins and tells you how much she’s missed you, and B tells you how much of a sensitive cunt you are.
All in all, it’s good to be home. Even if you are a total failure of a human being at the moment, your brain can't help but tac on to the end. As you watch the police cruiser pull out of the parking lot, and think about the man that sits inside- you think about the fact that you aren't sixteen anymore. And he’s not married...
And in that moment- you realize just how good it is to be home.
And there it is. If you'd like to be tagged in future chapters, please let me know! I’m thinking, and have this planned out to be about five chapters. Just a sexy, juicy, emotional quick read. Some Angst ridden smut coming your way!
Also- I appreciate reviews and reblogs more than you could imagine. They are literally fuel for me- so if you can spare some time to give me your opinion, I’d love you forever!

so, lots to unpack here. first of all, to establish setting, I’m currently sitting in LAX (if that doesn’t mean anything to you, their airport in Los Angeles) waiting for my flight back to Chicago that is gonna take off at 1:10 am and arrive at 7:33 am (two hour time difference accounted for). So I figured now is probably the most logical time to make this post. Luckily I can control exactly when I’ll get tired enough to actually sleep because I’m dependent on xanax and melatonin now, isn’t that fun!! haha. so like, most of today was cool of course, and I’m gonna get there, but I feel like I should first establish that I feel profoundly sad right now, though I can’t tell if it’s from the big event and me seeing my friends being over and having going back to real life which now consists of FINALS, or from this nostalgia I keep having for a life I’ve never had, or if it’s because I was reading Captain Canary fan fiction on the flight here (from San Jose to LA) which now just makes me really fucking sad because all I can think is WE’LL NEVER HAVE THIS. and these posts are generally good at helping me unpack my feelings so I figured I’d write this while I have the time and internet connection (good for LAX for actually offering free internet, unlike the pretending heathens in Chicago). so. here we go. I had my alarm set for 9:15 but ended up waking up around 8:45 (because shared hotel room) and started getting ready. I was cosplaying today so I did my make up and then changed into my full white canary garb (which, omg, I forgot is SO uncomfortable), doing my best to make sure where Caity signed it back in March remained untouched. A little after ten we made our way to the convention center and pretty much immediately headed to Caity’s booth because where else are we gonna go? We continued to pretend to all be VIPs (victimless crime, really) and a guy who had rather elaborate Citizen Steel (or whatever the hell we decided was Nate’s superhero codename) cosplay on who was in Brandon’s line right next to us made eye contact with me and was like “hey captain!” which was amusing haha and we took a picture together when I finished with Caity. I don’t really remember exactly what was said at each conversation because we frequented her booth, but it was good, I was just sad when I saw the picture and I looked less than stellar. I had like, super been overheating trying to keep the big coat on (I like the cosplay a lot better with the coat) and trying to make sure my hair and make up don’t run from sweat because my head overheats really easily for some reason so I didn’t look totally awesome and you can actually see my stomach hanging out just a tiny bit between the top and pants in the picture and like, I wanted to vomit when I saw it and then had a bunch of super triggering and totally inappropriate thoughts about it for the rest of the day because my fucking mind can’t be like “hey maybe you should eat less junk food” it has to immediately be like “you should just stop eating again” because fuck being neurotypical am I rite? (I am fine, if you’re concerned right now, but thank you for your concern). We did something to take up some time (I don’t remember) then ended up going back to her because I was like okay I need better photos with my white canary stuff on so I did that and they came out much better. At some point after that I leached onto my friends VIP status and used it to cut the line at Justin Hartley’s table because fuck waiting in line, and I saw him and TOTALLY flipped out, I was like “I love Smallville so much but I started it late after the show ended and I liked it so much but I thought I was never going to get to meet you because it was over BUT NOW YOU’RE HERE AND I LOVE YOUR GREEN ARROW SO MUCH YOU’RE MY FAVORITE” that’s basically what I said lol, to his credit he took it well and was kind and gentlemanly, so that was nice. From there we got some food at some point (just the overpriced shit from the convention center, there was a really amusing exchange where my friend attempted to figure out if the hot dog on the menu came with a bun or not because apparently in the Philippines they come on a stick sometimes and the ladies serving were very taken aback) then I went to Italia Ricci’s booth, and if you don’t know who that is it’s because she’s not *really* an Arrowverse actor (she was silver banshee on a few episodes of Supergirl) but is actually Robbie Amell’s wife so they generally do a joint booth thing. I wanted to see her because she’s on Designated Survivor, which I really love haha and she was super sweet, I said I was a big 24 fan from back in the day (DS stars Kiefer Sutherland) and she was like “oh yeah I’ve never seen it, he’s always teasing me about it because he’s like you’re the only person who hasn’t seen it!!”) which was amusing haha and then I met Juliana Harkavy and got a selfie with her, and she was totally awesome as well and just a fantastic person. After that those of us who weren’t doing the photo ops got in line for the legends panel, which then happened at 2:45. I live tweeted pretty much the whole thing, so if you have specific questions feel free to check that out over on twitter @RachelEiley, but nothing terribly spoilerish was said, someone asked if they could have any person in the DC universe, either existing in the Arrowverse or not yet onto the waverider to fill Stein’s spot who would it be, and Caity was basically like “well I know who it is and I’m very happy about it so I’m not gonna say anything else” lol which has prompted a fair amount of speculation as to who that means. In the room it seemed like everyone was thinking she meant Nyssa, but it’s not very much info to speculate on so I guess we’ll have to see. the other amusing exchange was when someone asked if they weren’t an actor what job they’d have an Caity was like “astronaut” and Brandon was like “do you know math?” which is obviously funnier than one would normally observe it to be when you consider they were in 400 Days together, a movie where they both played astronauts (and were each other’s romantic interests). Caity responded that it was a “dream” question, so she could say whatever she wanted. When the panel was over around 3:30 we ran back to Caity’s table, but the queue was full and the staff guy was like “sorry we had to cut it off here” and wouldn’t let anyone else in but I was like haha no fuck that shit if we all stand here and be annoying we’ll get on the line which, unsurprisingly, worked very well and we actually got on the gold/platinum VIP line and were like one of the first people to actually see her lol so that was a good plan!! But we got a few group selfies in that look really awesome and got to say goodbye to her (which is when the exchange about me saying maybe I’ll do Clexacon if I don’t flunk all my finals and her responding with my law school class rank happened). Everyone else was pretty much shutting things down at that point, so we hung out for a little bit and regrouped before heading out. We went to In-N-Out because I had mentioned I’d never had it before, and the place was absurdly busy, so we ended up eating at the tables outside despite it being like 50 degrees out, but it was nice and fun, a good ending to being with my friends for a few days and just had a good time with them. We were basically across the street from the airport at that point so I was dropped off afterwards and we said our goodbyes. I ended up chilling out at the gate for a while doing quimbee videos, which I’ll probably go back to if I have any time between finishing writing this and boarding the plane, for a while and doing that, then got on the plane and finished the first sudoku puzzle really quickly, then fucking up the next one so badly I couldn’t even correct my way out of it (which like, never happens) that I just gave up and read Captain Canary fan fiction for the rest of the flight, which of course got me feeling very invested in the ship, and then I just felt sad and couldn’t quite figure out why. But the plane landed, got off on the gate and was directed to a little bus thing to get to another terminal, in which a cute pilot gave me his seat, and then I went to the other terminal, found the gate, found a airplane pillow that wasn’t entirely made out of polyester, and planted myself at the gate until the plan boards and resolved to write this in the mean time, and here we are. Now, further analysis on the sad thing- so, obviously, I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a while now and it being over and me having to leave my friends and of course not seeing my favorite celebrity for at least a few months would reasonably make any person feeling sad, I feel like it’s not that simple. I mean, the fact that I’m going back to finals certainly doesn’t help, and I do have some anxiety about that despite doing this exact schtick every semester with my head going “but what if this time you actually suck at tests not like all the last times????” which of course is always fun. but there’s also that whole nostalgia thing that’s got me itching for something. It came out of course because of being around actors who are living cool lives and such, and links back to that thing I was talking about but not actually mentioning a little while back that had be thinking some of those things, and mostly just imagining that kind of life for myself and feeling wholly unfulfilled with the life I’ve chosen at being a lawyer and it wasn’t supposed to happen this way, dammit!!! I can’t exactly graduate law school and decide to go road trip out to Hollywood and become a waitress while auditioning, that would be a massive waste of time, effort, and money, and there is still of course stuff I want to do as a lawyer that has me not wanting to give up. I just want both, which I don’t think is possible, and that fucking sucks. The thing, anyway, was auditioning for a new show in development (that I’ll leave unnamed for now because despite not hearing anything they haven’t filled the part yet) that was taking casting videos and self-tapes through one of the casting sites I made a profile on at some point during college and was receiving emails from about it. And, this is subjective of course, but I felt like I really nailed the audition (and even if I did there’s no reason to think that would make it likely that I would get what is undoubtedly going to be a highly competed for part and one of which I do not fit the typical character description for), and I couldn’t help but imagine how much fun it would be, even if some of the stuff about the show that’s being said now (mainly how dark it is) makes me think it probably wouldn’t be the best idea anyway (my parents, for sure, would have a freaking fit over it). But that just leaves me here- going back to law school to finish my finals and leaving my friends and favorite actors behind and I just feel profoundly SAD over it all despite having a really fun and all around amazing weekend (it doesn’t help that my friends are going to continue hanging out, but this doesn’t really feel like FOMO). idk what else there is to write about that. it just...is. and I don’t think any amount of writing about that will change it. so I guess I’ll go back to reading my sad fan fiction? I don’t quite feel like going back to studying for bus orgs being that it’s 12:30 am (here, anyway, at home where I’ll be in 5 hours it’s 2:30 am) and now I just feel tired and sad after writing all of that. blah. this is a really shitty feeling and I don’t know what to do about it. there’s no quick fixes for this, obviously. maybe if I fall asleep on the plane (I probably will at some point) I’ll wake up in a better mood, and hopefully can get some more sleep during the day before I have to go to my review session and then make up class at 4 pm. So I guess this is me signing off, though feeling not very happy about all of it. Goodnight babes. Happy Monday.

RinHaru AU
So, before we begin, I'd like to talk a little about the AU it's self. Basically, Haru and Rin were best friends for the first ten years of their lives, but when Rin and his mother move away, they are forced to only see each other on holidays, or if Rin and Haru's mothers agree to let them speak on Skype. While at his new school, Rin meets Sosuke, and they become quick friends. As they get older, the both of them figure out their sexualities together. (Both very GAY) and eventually begin dating. About a year into their relationship, when they were 17, Souske moves away, and Rin finds out that he went back to Rin's home town. Soon after, Rin's mother announces that they're moving back. Rin's excitement, is almost unattainable knowing that he'll be with both Sosuke and Haru at the same time. But when he gets there, he finds himself in one of the most confusing and frustrating situations of his life.
Rin's POV
I could feel my mom's eyes locked on me as we began the final stretch to the new house. I knew she was waiting to see if I would smile, while I was excited, I had to keep up the act of not caring about anything. The new house was only a block away from the old one, and even better, it was right across the street from Haru's house. As we drove up, I could feel the nostalgia kick in, remembering the evenings I used to spend with Haru playing on this very street when we were kids. We had discovered our love of water and swimming together in his pool when we were only three, and we, along with the water, had been inseperable since. Haru and I had seen each other only two or three times a year since I'd moved, and honestly, it was starting to take a toll on our friendship, which terrified both of us. When we were ten, I could have told you everything about him, his favorite flavor of icecream, his dream vacation location, his favorite musical artist, his favorite place, his favorite kind of cookie, but now, I couldn't even tell you what his favorite color is... When we got to the house. My mom went full Big Boss mode.
"Alright Rin, I want you to get all the suitcases out of the back of the car and bring them inside, make sure to put them in the right room. Gou, come with me, we're going to go do something while we wait for the moving van to get here. I sighed, knowing that I'd be doing all the heavy lifting, and Mom and Gou would probably only be unpacking and decorating, which I guess was ok with me, considering that gave me more time to put away all of my stuff and then quickly go over to Haru's house for a bit to catch up. As I was setting down one of Gou's suitcases in her room, my mom called me from downstairs.
"Rin, Honey, could you come here please?" She asked. I sighed and quickly sat up, rushing quickly downstairs.
"Yeah mo-" I had to stop mid sentence, I mean come on, if you'd just seen your best friend for the first time in 6-7 months, you would too, and you'd do exactly what I did. When I saw Haru, that stupid act I had faded, and I found myself smiling so much wider than I had since the last time I'd seen him. He held out his arms and started to walk towards me, wrapping his arms around me in a hug. It took me a second but I hugged back. This was how we always hugged each other when we saw for the first time in a while. The last time I'd been here, at Christmas, my mom had made the comment that maybe I should be dating Haru rather than Souske. Of course I ignored it, after all I lived and cherished both of them, but Souske was my boyfriend and Haru was only an extremely close friend. I wouldn't trade either of them, not for the world. When we pulled away, my mom was looking at me with a face that just screamed,"You Looooooove him." The way Gou used to say it when we were younger. Of course, as always, I ignored the look and kept my eyes on Haru.
"It is so good to see you Dolphin Boy!" I exclaimed. He smiled too, and grabbed my hand.
"It's great to see you too Sharkweek." Then, he pulled me out the door of my house and started running towards his house on the other side of the street. When we got inside, he used his foot to slam the door behind him, and pulled me upstairs to his room. When we got in there, we both collapsed on the bed, laughing.
"Ok ok ok, Haru what the hell? Why did you literally drag me to your house and into your room?" I asked. He smiled and stood up walking over to the shelf above his dresser.
"I've got something to show you." He picked up a trophy, it was a golden fishbowl and it had a small plaque on the front. I recognized it almost immediately, because I had the same one. The plaque read,
#1 Best Overall
2019 Regional Swimming Competition
I had won my regionals competition a few weeks back and I had been training daily since. The fact that Haru had made it too was so exciting. I shot up and took the trophy out of his hands, wrapping one arm around him in a side hug, and looked at the trophy.
"Haru this is amazing!" I looked at him as I let go and continued to stare at the trophy. After a good ten seconds I pulled away and sat it back on the shelf where he'd had it then grabbed his hand and started rushing back to my house.
Haru's POV
I could feel my face heat up when he grabbed my hand, I knew he would never feel the same way, after all, he had a boyfriend already, but if your crush of three years grabbed your hand and started booking it to his house, you would blush too.
Anyway, when we got to his house, he ran past our families and went straight for his room, where he quickly pushed me into a red chair in the corner. I laughed as I fell into it, then when I opened my eyes, I found him rummaging through a big box in the corner that said: SHELVES in big black sharpie writing. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when he pulled something out of the box. In his hand, was the same beautiful trophy I had in my room. I did exactly what he had when he saw mine and sprang up, wrapping my arms around him in a hug. I knew this meant we'd be competing in nationals, but I think we both had a mutual understanding that we were best friends, and we owed it to each other to try our best. I pulled away from the hug and I couldn't contain it any longer I started to jump up and down in excitement.
"Rin! We did it! We're going to nationals! This is... This is our dream! Since we were 5! Look at us!" I started to dance around his empty room. He laughed and sat down in his little red chair.
"Man, this is so exciting Haru, but we both agree not to go easy on each other right?" He asked.
"Of course! I think we owe it to each other, it's kind of a sign of respect..." I explained. Rin nodded then stood up.
"I'm glad that we agree, let's go downstairs, I'll see you off and then I'm gonna start unpacking my stuff." He turned to the door.
"Actually! I'm supposed to be helping you with unpacking your stuff!" I exclaimed. He looked a little surprised but he turned to the door and we started to walk downstairs.
We spent the rest of the day catching up, laughing, and unpacking. We actually managed to get the kitchen, the living room, and the bathroom all done, and Rin and I made alot of progress on his room. I'm pretty sure there were only two or three more boxes by the time we were done. That night I went home and had to convince myself for the fifteen millionth time that he wasn't into me...
Rin's POV
After Haru and his mom left, I just kinda spent the rest of the night with my mom and sister, but when I was finally lied down in my bed, that Haru and I had struggled for two hours to build, I actually had time to pull out my phone. To no surprise, Sosuke had been texting me nonstop for the entire day. I finally replied and he immediately chewed me out but when I explained the understood. After that, we started making plans on where to meet.
Souske♥️:
What if we met at the park?
Rin:
That's on the other side of town from me, it's a little out of the way...
Sosuke♥️:
Ok, well what about the school?
Rin:
Wouldn't it be a little awkward? We'd look like crazy delinquent kids...
Sosuke♥️:
Then what about the Pool?
Rin:
Actually, yeah! I was planning to go tomorrow morning anyway, I missed my workout today so I'll be doing extra, I'll probably wake up early and be there till 3, you can come whenever you want.
Sosuke♥️:
Sounds great! I'll meet you there Rin!
😘😘😘
Rin:
Alright, see you then Souske!
♥️♥️♥️
Just as I closed out of the chat, I got a call. Of course it was Haru.
"Hi Sharkweek!" He exclaimed through the phone, him using the nickname always made me smile, so in an attempt to get him to do the same, I'd made one for him.
"Hey Dolphin Boy, what are you doing calling me at 9:30?" I asked, knowing he usually went to sleep around 8:00.
"I couldn't sleep, too much excitement for your returning home!" he exclaimed into the phone, "Also, I have a question, do you have any plans for tomorrow?" I was kind of expecting the question, and I felt bad telling him that I couldn't hang out, so I decided to finally tell him about Sosuke. Sure, he knew that my boyfriend went to school here, but I'd never told him who he was...
"Actually, I'm meeting up with my boyfriend tomorrow, you probably know him, Sosuke?" I asked him. He was silent for a second, probably thinking to see if he knew who he was.
"Oh! You're with Sosuke! I should have put that together considering that you said that he had moved down here around the same time Sosuke had!" He laughed into the phone. I laughed too.
"Well I'm going in at 4 too, so what if we walked together, I'll leave you alone while you're with Sosuke, don't want to get in between you're time together." He suggested. Honestly, it was a pretty good idea so,
"Yeah, I'm meeting him at the pool tomorrow, but I'm planning on going super early, probably around 4 am." I told him.
"That sounds great!"
