Hannibal and Classical Music (Season 3/3)

Alright last one. Luckily my fam got Hulu so I can watch this lovely thing forever. Ok like before- spoilers ahead and a lot of obscenely pretentious explanations.

Ok first one-season 3 episode 1. Now this is a just a fun one to kick of the last bit of this series. The piece we’re looking at is my true love, Antonin Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings in E Major. This is played over the ballroom dance scene with Hannibal and Bedelia. Guys. Just listen to Dvorak ok. That’s all I ask.

Hehe ok serious time episode 3. So this one has me stumped honestly. The piece is Satie’s Embryons Desséchés movement 5, Fantasie Valse. This is played by Hannibal himself while he discusses Will and Bedelia. Now the best I can come up with here is the era of this piece. Satie was a major figure of the impressionist/20th century era of classical music. This is significant to Hannibal, since he is known to play harpsichord, an instrument of the early baroque era. These two eras sharply contrast, much like Hannibal’s character from season one to three. This music he plays symbolizes his change. Will did in fact change him. And his shift in playing this music represents it.

Alright moving along to episode 4. The piece is Greig’s Suite No 1 movement 2, The Death of Aase. This is played over Will’s imagination of Hannibal’s, his, and Jack’s last dinner. Yeah the one where he plans to kill Jack with Hannibal. So this is fun because the play this suite is from is quite simply one about (get ready from a quote I found on some dude’s essay) “the title character’s struggle with procrastination and immaturity.” Take what you wish from that, but I’ll say that quite literally matches Will’s hesitance on joining up with Hannibal in that season two finale. But more specifically the movement is for the death of the title character’s mother. So in it’s simplest form, Jack is a paternal figure for Will, Will imagines his death, boom, the piece chosen makes sense.

Right now we have episode 5. So this is easily one of the best musical choices I’ve ever witnessed. The scene is at the very end, where Jack and Hannibal are fighting and a beautiful, energetic opera overture plays. It’s Rossini’s La Garza Ladra or The Thieving Magpie. Basically it’s about a “devilishly clever magpie.” Yup I know- Hannibal is the magpie. That’s it. Okay!

Episode 6- my love, my life, “Dolce.” Ugghhhh sadly I can’t pull out any classical pieces from this but the beauty of the original composition “Bloodfest” by Brian Rietzell playing over the Uffizi Gallery scene is EVERYTHING. That piece itself is actually based off of Bach’s Goldberg Variations (aka Hannibal theme). But NOW they’re together so it’s BOTH OF THEIRS’ THEME AAAAAAAAA I’m in love.

Okkkk Episode 7- Definitely a stretch here but basically during the scene where Will and Hannibal are eating with Mason and Will bites off Cordell’s face- Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5 plays. Alright with Tchaikovsky himself being chosen is cool not just because he was an amazing composer but also because he was gay!! We love that. But anywho that implies things on its own. The piece itself was actually dedicated to another man- a sort of mentor to Tchaikovsky (hmmm in a way Hannibal was a mentor to Will in the ways of murder). So yeah Hannibal smiling proudly at Will after his little scene with this playing is just marvelous.

Oh damn. The last one. Episode 13. There is only one piece that I wish to bring to attention. And once more, it is the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Good lord this plays as Will and Hannibal share wine before the final bloody fight between them and Dolarhyde. It all has come full circle. Our first scene seeing Hannibal, and the last, this piece plays. Only now, Will has joined him. It is the musical representation of their union. Hannibal is not himself without Will anymore. And the theme that originally belonged to Hannibal is now their own.

3. What’s your job?

I’m not working currently but I’m due to start working at a software consulting company a month from now... I don’t wanna be rude but I’m looking for other opportunities in the meantime x3

4. If you could, would you go back to school?

definitely not for computer science. They don’t teach you anything a programming job expects of you. IF I went back to school it would be for philosophy. Philosophy’s the only thing that makes me feel like I’m doing something real (ironic when you consider philosophy’s public image). I took a few philosophy classes, 2 entry level and 1 upper level. They were the most impactful and the most far reaching classes who had a real and legitimate connection with me as a person I ever took. I’d pay just to have those experiences again. Everyone deserves those kinds of experiences.

5. Can you parallel park?

Kinda? I mean I did it when I took my first driving test, but I haven’t tried in a few years and I don’t have a license so I don’t really have the opportunity to tell.

6. A job you had which would surprise people?

I’m sure they’d be surprised that in my 4.5 years of college I never pursued work til my last semester hahaha

7. Do you think aliens are real?

I’m sure by all statistical likelihood they’d have to be... but the universe is a huge place. And human’s lives are short, compared to our modes of travel. We haven’t seen any simply because we can’t, in our lifetimes, drive out far enough to see them. And they probably haven’t visited us because... I mean we’re a tiny dot in the middle of a trillion stars. It’s like finding a single grain of sand on the beach. It’s just hard. I gotta give em a break for that...

9. Tattoos?

okay this one’s a toughie for me! I want, at some point in my life, to be covered in tatoos. I think it’s just a beautiful look. But also! I can’t think of anything meaningful enough to me to put on my skin. Let alone a dozen or a hundred of meaningful images to put all over my body. So I’m stuck on that...

10. Favorite color?

I love purple. I love honest, muted, natural colors. My favorite pallet is purples and grays. Maybe black too. I love cloudy skies, smoky rooms, and furniture faded with use. I like pastels that just seem to add to the scene, to paint the scene with a subtle hue, soft colors that diffuse outward and bring a certain quality to the entire area instead of bold colors that just draw the eye to the single colored object... je ne sais quoi.

11. What’s your guilty pleasure?

I love comfort food. I feel like a child whenever I eat anything that isn’t like ... complex. Granted I love complex foods too (indian cuisine particularly is my favorite) but there’s a special place in my heart (and my stomach!) for like. Candy and mcdonald’s and sodas and stuff.

12. Things people do that drive you crazy?

blatant contrarianism. People who just pick the worst hills to die on, all the time, forever. Their entire public image is hatefulness. It’s so so tiring I don’t know how they do it. Are you happy? Do you enjoy this?

Another thing I can‘t stand is people who think they’ve got everything figured out. Not so much people who claim to know things, but people who claim to have some mental framework that covers ... everything. And often they’re wrong!! But, of course, according to their own mental framework, they’re right and everyone else just hasn’t figured it out yet. Insufferable.

13. First thing you remember you wanted to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a theoretical physicist pretty much up until I got to middle school and discovered programming. I like math and science, I still do. Computer science at its highest level is basically just applied math with a bit of imagination. Theoretical physics is... kinda the same thing too. Except instead of computers you have stars and atoms. Just subject material. Same mental space. Same abstraction of nature that becomes a sort of nature in itself.

14. Favorite childhood sport?

Okay I loved the variation of soccer I used to play in elementary school where the athletic kids would play actual soccer and me and the other unathletic kids would just slowly walk around the field and give a kick here and a kick there...

15. Do you talk to yourself?

Yes! All the time. Mostly when other people aren’t around. It helps me realize and catalogue my thoughts because otherwise my brain moves too fast to keep up :3

16. What movie do you adore?

I think my favorite movie ever was kimi no na wa or Your Name. It had AMAZING pacing, AMAZING visuals, AMAZING characters and the plot was just so incredibly written and everything was so well tied together and everything came at just the right time and the conclusion was so so so fucking satisfying I dsajkfghdf UGH

Big ADHD feel. I love puzzles. I love puzzle based games. I love the elation of figuring something out. I love puzzles so much, in fact, that I kinda think of everything I do as a puzzle in some way... Programming is definitely a puzzle. Finding all the pieces that fit together - except, you get to design the pieces!! But now >:3 the burden is on you to make it elegant and adaptable. Anyone can hack something together but the REAL puzzle is designing a system that both solves a problem and does it in a way that’s efficient and Also elegant and easy to use. 100% coffee. I drink tea but I’m not a ‘tea person’. I love coffee so much. Black coffee. Lattes. Starbucks sweet coffee concoctions. Espresso. Coffee from all around the world. God Do I Love Coffee.

My favorite coffees tend to be from asia, currently I’m really liking sumatra mandheling. I love coffees that taste like dirt. Rich, earthy, complex. Real dark and real bold. Usually those are from asia. I’m okay with african coffees but they tend to be really deep and fruity, sometimes even chocolatey, which, is real hit or miss for me. If you’re from america usually you’ll have south american coffees which tend to be light, woody, nutty sometimes. They’re usually too light for my taste but sometimes they really really hit. Gross generalizations aside, I love trying out every coffee and there’s more exceptions that blow my mind than anything else. I don’t think I’ve ever had a coffee I actually didn’t like, just many I like better. In any case I just love coffee!!!

19. Phobias?

Ocean. Don’t like big bodies of water that I can’t see down. Also there’s weird stuff in there. I don’t know how people just hang out at the beach with crabs and urchins and crawdads and jellyfish and sharks and riptides I’m just scared out of my mind!!! This is their land!! Not mine!!

20. Favorite kind of music?

Alternative rock of all sorts. Shoegaze, grunge, post-rock, math rock, electronic rock, emo... I also love hardcore and post-hardcore as well. A lot of metal does it for me but also a lot doesn’t so it comes and goes. I love music with a strong groove and complex textures. Me big ADHD so I like to tap along in weird and complex ways so it really helps if the meter is weird and complex already x3

I've gotten a lot better at modding since I first released that trait and now I present you with the new and improved version! Now, I know Nyx created an awesome Mermaid mod a while ago, and I wanted to go in a different direction with mine so each would be unique and offer something different. Both my mod and Nyx's can be used together, but one sim cannot be both lifestates at the same time. This is because they both have unique needs that conflict. I based a lot of this mod on mythology from many different mermaid stories and tried to make the gameplay as interesting as possible.  I fully intend to expand on this mod even more in the future and would like to take feedback for any additions you'd like to see. And hopefully, as EA releases more content, I'll be able to create more for mermaids!

~Mermaid Mythology~ With this new mermaid lifestate comes the Mermaid Mythology skill!. Found in the hobbies section of Buy Mode, there are a few books dedicated to the subject that will teach you all about these creatures and their powers. This way, your sim won't die simply because they can't use the pool! The Moon- Mermaids have a very strong connection to the moon, as it influences their powers and effects them in several ways. If a mermaid is outside at night, they have a chance of becoming Moonstruck. This will disorient them and drain their Vitality at a fast rate while preventing them from being able to use their powers. If multiple Moonstruck mermaids get together, they can channel the moon's Lunar Energy and perform special spells! Mermaid Powers- Mermaids are not just half-human, half-fish creatures that sing. They also have a variety of special abilities! As they use their powers, they will gain more abilities, building their Mermaid Powers skill. Each level has a few abilities that are related to various mermaid myths and legends. Mermaids also have abilities that can only be learned through studying the Mythology books! Level One Siphon Water- Every so often, a mermaid can siphon water from the moonpool to boost their Vitality need and unlock a few abilities temporarily. Play with Water- Mermaids who have recently siphoned water from the pool can perform a few special spells, including juggling water with their bare hands! Evaporate- Any puddles, big or small, indoors or outdoors, a mermaid can instantly evaporate. Level Two Burst Pipes- Do you have a neighbor that just pushes your buttons? Well, a skilled enough mermaid can hop over to her neighbor's house for a visit and break all the plumbing in their house! Water Blast- After siphoning from the moonpool, mermaids can hit any human with a blast of water that will leave them dripping wet and freezing cold! Level Three Absorb Moonlight- Occasionally, mermaids can absorb moonlight from the moonpool if it is already activated. Level Four Siren Voice- Mermaids are known for having voices that can hypnotize humans like prey. By singing, a mermaid at this level will emit a spell that will effect all humans who hear it, making them flirty and very receptive to romantic advances. Be sure to maintain the Vitality need, though. If it gets low enough, you could develop Aquatic Laryngitis! Level Five Entrancing Spell- Once a mermaid has mastered their siren singing, they can eventually Entrance any human and completely incapacitate them. They can leave them like this, or release them and romance them without fear of rejection. Level Six Disperse Storm- With focus, mermaids can clear the sky and expel storms or cloud cover! Level Seven Conjure Storm- While your sim is charged with Lunar Energy, they can use the moonpool to conjure a minor rain storm. Conjure Snow- While charged with Lunar Energy, your sim can use the moonpool to summon a minor snow storm. Lunar Strike- While charged with Lunar Energy, mermaids can summon a bolt of lightning! Level Eight Conjure Thunderstorm- While charged with Lunar Energy, a mermaid can summon a lightning storm! Conjure Blizzard- While charged with Lunar Energy, your sim can summon a full-on blizzard! Wind Tunnel- With their power over the elements, mermaids can create a small tornado to trap human sims. Level Nine Steal Siren Voice- Mermaids at this level can cast a spell on other mermaids to reverse the effects of their siren song. When they do this, their Entrancing spell will be stronger. Level Ten Drown- At the peak of their powers, mermaids can forcibly drown humans! They will also be immune to becoming Moonstruck and they will instead be able to channel Lunar Energy on their own.

~Additional Features~ Sea Monsters- Mermaids are not the only aquatic beings that exist. Much more horrifying, gruesome creatures dwell in the deep... But these sea monsters are actually merpeople that have been cursed by the moon! If a mermaid does something to displease the moon, there is a chance they will be transformed into a horrifying beast that looks like it came straight from the black lagoon! But don't fret! You can learn how this curse can be lifted if you keep studying Mermaid Mythology. The sea monster mesh is a recolor of the Get Famous lagoon monster costume. The body is 5528 polys, and the head is 2308, available for teen-elder. Becoming Human- If a mermaid wishes to be turned into a human, they must first plead to the moon to grant their wish. Writer's Year In Review

This year has been a revelation. I went from deeply, irrevocably believing I can't write fiction at all to knowing that I'm actually pretty good at it!

It's given me the confidence to find work as a freelance writer and editor in real life, after years of unemployment and anxious paralysis resulting from chronic illness and trauma. A lot of other factors also helped but the fic writing played a huge role in getting my shit together.

Kiss It Better (Westallen).This fic is my baby. I love little Iris and little Barry in it so much, the hurt and confusion in each other they attempted to heal, how that healing carried into their adult love and family. It will always and always be my favourite thing I have ever written. Wee!stallen is my jam, and the reason I ship them so damn hard.

Do Not Go Gentle (Westallen). Ngl, I love this for the sheer amount of truly gratifying comments. Every single one of them have been emotional and flaily. It all makes me feel like I may have finally levelled up. Hallelujah. xD

Funniest Fic:

The Care and Feeding (Queenwestallen). This is my ultimate OT3. This fic, written as a list and discussion is 95% humour and contains some of my best banter and (I feel) characterization. An element I'm really proud of is how I managed to center and include all their important non-romantic relationships in their conversations. Iris's boisterous female friends, Oliver's friends, Cisco and Caitlin's snarky commentary all shoehorned themselves into the list with hilarious and wholesome results. 

It's not a popular OT3 but I feel like it's a good first attempt to drag this ship to water. xD

Cutest Fic:

Dancing Queen (Olivarry). Even after a year this contiues to be the fic with the highest kudos ratio (except for the more recent one) and the second most bookmarked. I love getting comments on this because they are all some variation of "my teeth hurt. I have diabetes!" xD Well, I did build it around a rainbow sprinkle icing sugar donut, but there is a significant dollop of angst there in the middle. A flangst donut.

Your Vigil In My Keeping (Westallen). This fic has less than 200 hits but has the highest kudos ratio of all. I guess kid fic isn't everyone's cup of tea, but Wee!stallen is cute af yo. I headcanon the origins of Barry and Iris's steadfast partnership in this story, where her faith and belief in him is as strong as his protectiveness of her, all tied up in the language and innocence of children.

Kinkiest Fic:

WA Smut and Kink Collection. I literally just posted this yesterday lol. So far it's just a face-sitting short, but I have quite a few hard and soft kinks lined up. Westallen needs more hard smut tbh, and they have such a unique powerfully loving dynamic that every kink I'm writing has required me to come at it a little bit sideways with a whole lot of emotional focus.

Saddest Fic:

Three fics I can't choose from.

Do Not Go Gentle (Westallen). This is basically Iris's grief and fear in a raging tempest, and it's strongly implied that the future Nora has warned them of will come to pass regardless of what they do. The fact is that there already is and will be a timeline where Iris loses Barry, just as there must be one where she won't, because that is the nature of potentiality. 

The Paradigm of Uncertainty (Westallen). This was a drabble almost, that ruminates on the probability that speedsters do not erase timelines but abandon them, along those versions of their loved ones. It's as @rkwago's brilliant comment says: "Iris hurts in so many weird, cosmic ways that her life is almost an eldritch horror house," which is the most perfect description ever of what it means to be a time traveller's wife.

The Universal Constant (Gen, background WA). A lot of people find the way Barry goes off on Joe cathartic in this fic, and so do I. But it's not so simple. I don't think Joe was wrong to form the views he did, or that anyone was in the wrong really. As @sophiainspace pointed out, it's a mediation of grief and love, their parallels and continuations between parents and children and lovers. The fact that it takes Henry's death for Barry to find the adult language to articulate to Joe why he will always believe in his father's innocence is a tragedy that cuts three ways.

(This fic is also the reason I have a folder in my drive marked "how to get away with murder" and probably a likely reason to get me arrested one day. xD)

Most Popular Fic:

Strangers In The Cold (Coldflash). The Coldflash fandom is a joy to feed. This was my first smut fic which was preceded by an entire chapter of banter about nothing in particular (except it ended up establishing a background that gave birth to the Coldflash vs Olivarry polyam series) And holy wow, for a newbie writer, the response has been amazing. Looking back, I wince at a lot of writing mistakes and its undeniably rough, but it really bolstered my confidence.

(I feel a little guilty that all my other CF stories are still in my WiP folder while I update the polyam series at snail's pace.)

The Shape of Us (Westallen). I wrote this on tumblr half-asleep one night, half as a rambly headcanon...and woke up to literally one hundred freaking notes. What the hell. Now at over 260, it's the most popular fic I've ever posted on tumblr.

I never consciously intended it to be a body-positivity fic but apparently women really relate to the insecurities of growing older and watching our bodies change with marriage, children and the sheer hectic pace of life. Even my non-fandom friends reblogged it simply for its representation of "real women". Barry's response is my own wish fulfillment fantasy; the sort of total acceptance and validation that we wish we could hear it the times we can't find it in ourselves. In light of the virulent body-shaming Candice Patton has been subjected to ever since she was revealed to have gained a fuller figure in S5, I'm very glad to have written it.

Least Popular Fic:

Carry On (Gen) This character study of Oliver Queen only has 135 hits a year after posting, which is par for the course with gen. But has a solid 12% kudos ratio, which means it's probably as good as I think it is. It's one of my favourite and easiest fics I have ever written.

Love Me Like You Do (Olivarry) Lordy, if my first Coldflash smut filled me with confidence, my first Olivarry smutfic all but ruined it. I struggled with it for a long time, unlike SitC, which I suppose shows in the over-descriptions. I got carried away with the quipping and I guess Barry topping at all is really not popular with slash fans?

Still, I'm honestly toying with the idea of deleting and rewriting it. At least it was a learning experience - don't write smut unless it makes you feel horny yourself.  

Most Challenging Fic:

Do Not Go Gentle (Westallen). I think the reason stories you knock off in two hours are instantly popular while the ones you slaved over for weeks barely get any attention is because the process is reflected in the ease of reading. But this one is an exception. It was an absolute monster, taking three weeks and several revisions to wrestle into submission - and it paid off in spades!  Going by the response, I seem to have achieved the wow factor I was going for.

My only regret is that I posted it on tumblr before the last revision that finally made it work, so that too many readers saw the lacklustre version rather than the polished one.

Honorable Mention:

A Stitch In Time (Olivarry for now, eventual Queenwestallen) Baby's first multi-chapter! Admittedly chapters 3 and 4 have been languishing in my drive for a few months now and this thing has 100% more deleted scenes and outtakes posted to my tumblr than the actual story on AO3. But I'm so proud of it! I learned to write action scenes because of it, how to write climaxes, dream sequences, news articles and tell a story in several different formats. It made me rediscover my empathy for Felicity and write her as a PoV character, think deeply on Laurel Lance's losses and give voice to her struggles, and explore how a real friendship and understanding could evolve between Oliver and Iris out of their mutual love for Barry. (Centering female characters within manpain narratives, ftw! Otoh, I centered Iris so much it veered off the Olivarry rails into Queenwestallen territory on its own)

There is so much meaty conflict and delicious looming disaster in this story that I'm determined going to keep at it, even if slow and steady. If only to bring the light of Barry/Iris/Oliver into the world. xD

Holding On (Olivarry). This real-world disability AU deals with chronic and mental illness and the precariousness and personal demons of that reality. I tore out the rawest parts of my life for this fic and put them on display so that I couldn't bear to show it to anyone for a year after it was written.

I'm very glad I did finally brush it off and put it up because it has struck a chord with so many people, especially other Spoonies. The low number of hits on a fic that deals in hurt/comfort rather stings, as I can't help but think the disinterest is because of the "disability" and "neurodivergence" tags. But I still think it's one of the best things I've written and one I'll always be proudest of.

General Reflections:

Things I've learned over the past year of writing:

- Self-deprecation is not my friend. I need to be honest enough with myself to acknowledge when my writing is good, because either I self-validate and build confidence or I become a black hole of insecurity where validation goes to die. And if I think I'm a bit better than I actually am, it's not just okay but necessary to believe it.

- What I call writer's block is perfectionism, anxiety and physical and mental fatigue. If I don't eat, sleep, hydrate and acheive a relaxed mental state, I won't be able to write. 

- Momentum is more my friend than any amount of inspiration and motivation. Sitting my ass down and make it a habit to churn out X number of words a day, even bad writing, will do more to help me than polishing an idea to a high shine. 

- If I don't forgive myself for the stories I can't write I'll never write anything. I am doing this for free, to share the love and joy and therefore obligated to no one. 

- I'm capable of writing things I don't have the first idea how to write. My fingers on a keyboard can paint the picture my brain can't visualize. 

I don't believe in New Year's resolutions, but I am going to make it a personal goal to write at least 15k words per month, learn to stick to a posting schedule where possible.  and end next year with an additional 150k words posted.
