blue spring
weeks ago i stumbled upon a post on weibo and just now i saw a tweet on twitter that made me wanted to read the original once again. im in a great pain! anyway my thoughts are too unorganized so read at your own risk 😔
i love how gege in original specifically chose to word it aoi haru (青い春) which means, of course "youth" but literally means "blue spring". it's more like a poetic way or could be a pun for seishun (青春) which holds the same meaning. wording it as youth is not wrong at all, it's effective, but to me personally it doesn't capture much the essence of the "youth" that they tried to show us.
aoi (青い) means blue, could also mean unripe and inexperienced. while haru (春) means springtime or spring (season).
there are many ways to interpret this sentimental line. it refers to as the spring of one's life time, one could say "in one's prime", any time in your life that could be one of the best times in your life. it could also be understood as "inexperienced years" "youthful naïveté" and "fresh start".
if you searched aoi haru on google, what you might find would be a 2001 film directed by toshiaki toyoda. it tells story about a friendship of two boys that gone wrong. to put it short kujo, bored of their daily violent routine and aoki, might be a bit too dependent on his bestfriend bc of his admiration which one day leads to a crack in their friendship. my favorite part would be when they grow some tulips, each representing themselves like some of them bloom too fast resulting them to wither early while kujo's flower blooms the last. drawing a parallel with the plot: after aoki finally sets up his final showdown, choosing death, kujo, whose attempt at saving him fails, finally decides to give life a chance to blossom.
what essence of youth im trying to say is, the times gojou had with getou, those three years, were forsooth the best time of his life. some said you could have your youth but it wouldn't necessarily be the spring of your life time. it pains me that the shinjuku breakup was also included in three years of his youth memories implying it was the end of his "blue spring". even though it led to a tragedy, it also became his fresh start.
some satosugu + spring brainrots im having while typing this post but i dont know where to fit in:
getou being born in setsubun, which is a day before the beginning of spring.
chapter 100 cover was the last spring they spent together, they were already third years. the fact that getou was already deteriorating but still able to laugh because gojou was there.
