Shiv Shastri Balboa Trailer: Movie Review | Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta| Bollywood Petals |
After working in the entertainment industry for more than 30 years an actor of repute Anupam Kher believes that his upcoming motion picture Shiv Shastri Balboa is significant because it offered him to play the title role. The film, written by Ajayan Venugopalan is being marketed as an engaging story of one Indian man's struggle to survive in a tiny town in America. Anupam Kher in a recent interview about his movie Shiv Shastri Balboa, recently said to reporters "Neena as well as I've been doing a lot of work over the years. Today, we've received this recognition. Before, I was an unassuming face on the poster of a movie. In the last 38 years, I am working in the film industry, I'm on the main poster alongside my character. This is an amazing achievement".
Tumblr media
"All this is possible through hard work, but certainly not (with) fame. In my career of 37 years I have met many people who have left and came back, however, we're there," he further added.
The actress Neena Gupta, who's career began after appearing in films such as Badhaai Ho and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and in the Netflix show Masaba Masaba, said she feels blessed to not be stereotyped as a mother on screen. She stated, "I am getting to play roles that are similar the same age as me. I'm not just doing mommy roles. In one movie I play the role of the title character. It's a major deal for me."
Story:
Shiv Shastri Balboa is the story about an avid enthusiast of Rocky Balboa who established the local Rocky Boxing Club retires and is permanently settled in the US to be with the family of his son. In the US, he is confronted with the effects of cultural shift and isolation as he embarks on a wild trip towards Philadelphia along with his housekeeper who he meets, and decides to live instead of just live.
Review:
Shiv Shankar Shastri (Anupam Kher) is a huge lover of the film Rocky in which Sylvester Stallone played boxer Rocky Balboa who is the main character of the plot. Although he's not a professional fighter but he has trained several boxers that have received awards for the country. He is now retired and moves in the USA to be in the United States with daughter Rahul (Jugal Hansraj) as well as his wife, two sons , and the dog Casper. His paths cross paths together with Elsa Zachariah (Neena Gupta) as he slowly adjusts to the bustling city life in the USA, and makes a vow to reconnect with her family back in India. It happens that they are traveling together across in the American Midwest, ultimately starting an exploration of self-love, and self-discovery. Shastri along with Elsa also meet Cinnamon Singh (Sharib Hashmi) and Siya (Nagris Fakhri) along their journey, who help them reach their destination. However, when Elsa is identified as "wanted" by the authorities and is incarcerated the situation begins to turn to the south. The second half of the film focuses on Shastri's attempts to free her and fulfill his own goal while doing it.

319 - Bend It Like Beckham (Patreon Selects)
Tumblr media
We have another episode from one of our beloved sponsor tier patrons from Patreon, this time returning us to our beloved movie year 2003! After becoming a 2002 British megahit, Bend It Like Beckham launched in the US at Sundance before becoming an early 2003 summer crowdpleaser. Directed by Gurinder Chadha, the film follows Jess (Parminder Nagra) as she secretly joins a soccer team against the wishes of her traditional Indian family. With nominations from the WGA and the Golden Globes, Bend It Like Beckham ultimately did not manage an Oscar nomination for its upbeat look at teenage womanhood.
This episode, we talk about Fox Searchlight's 2003 lineup and 28 Days Later as a fellow UK crossover hit. We also discuss the film's shoehorned romantic subplot, Parminder Agra's run of prominent television roles, and costar Keira Knightley's trio of breakthrough 2003 roles.
Topics also include international nominee Lagaan, the film's soundtrack, and sports movies.

Huh. I'm rewatching Sense8 out of boredom and re-interest and. Kala's father is played by Anupam Kher. Who I mostly know today as Raj's Pops in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenga. Wow, the Wachowskis really went for the cream of the cream for their secondary cast. And also Kala's father is just as good a dad as Raj's dad is.

Just saw the kashmir files letterboxd and amidst all the reviews calling it propaganda there was a very nice girl talking about how its 'so privileged' to call it overly gory while sitting in a theatre with air conditioning when it was a mass Hindu exodus. Thank you anupam kher and whatever agnihotri for rotting the minds of my generation with your nonsense, purposefully targetted propaganda movies where Muslims are always the villains and the good Hindus are always running away from them in fear while other good Hindus banish said invaders and we leave the theatre chanting about a glorious Hindu Rashtra🫡🫡🫡
Also thank you Yami Gautam for starring in movies like Article 370 which is going to be another beautiful propaganda movie which glorifies violence towards Muslims and validates it. And also for always supporting her husband in his endeavors to make such movies hence fulfilling her pativrata dharma

I liked the part with the aloo gobi.
I know nothing about soccer, and thankfully it wasn't a requirement to enjoy Bend It Like Beckham. I didn't even know "bending it" was an actual thing; I thought it was just a figure of speech. Come to think of it, I still don't know what it means.
The story of an Indian girl aspiring to play professional soccer while navigating the cultural expectations of her family is one I found unexpectedly heartwarming. A well written script, some great heartfelt dialogue, and interesting, believable characters went a long way to getting me invested. Parminda Nagra in particular gave an exceptional lead performance.
The climactic back and forth between her sister's wedding and The Big Game, and the scenes immediately following of both, were wonderfully done. I really enjoyed Anupam Kher's performance as a surprisingly cool dad, and the scene of him playing cricket again at the end was actually so sweet.
Not to promote stereotypes about women's sports or anything, but man, this movie should have been gay. It's actually baffling that it wasn't. There was one part where Jess said it wasn't like she was sleeping with anybody and Jules (Keira Knightley) immediately ran onto the scene, and I actually thought it was a bit on the nose because of how clearly they were going to get together. Leave it to a movie from 2002 to have this degree of compulsory heterosexuality.
Speaking of, the love triangle with Jess and Jules both crushing on their coach Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) was simply uncompelling, and built off a creepy power dynamic that made it uncomfortable to watch. I really didn't care for that final romance scene in the airport at all.
I learned absolutely nothing about soccer, and I hope I never do. Pretty good.
