birds and shutterbugs
Tim Drake was cutting it close, and he knew it, but this was the coolest night of his whole life. Perched on the other end of the roof, ranting at one of the frankly horrifying stone gargoyles, was Robin.
Not just any Robin, but the one he had seen make Batman laugh. Sure, the flips were cool when Dick wore the suit, but Jason was just so cool. He unscrewed the cover on his camera, cautiously adjusting his crouch so he could get a better angle. He knew Jason had freckles from going to classes with him, but he had never managed to catch a clear enough picture of Robin where he could see the freckles.
"-nother thing, he just expects me to want to rotate the tires on the Batmobile. Just 'cuz I tried to steal them doesn't mean I want to touch the fuckin' things ever again. And don't get me started on Dickface, always bitchin' an moanin' bout how unfair it is that soo many people wanna date 'im," Jason was waving his hands at the gargoyle, and Tim was distinctly reminded of watching the older boy perform as Mark Antony in Caesar.
It was almost too easy to snap pictures during the tirade, but when the boy wonder paused to take a swig from a Bat Burger cup, Tim realized he forgot to silence the shutter. It was comical, and in any other situation (preferably several rooftops away), Tim might've laughed, but seeing the narrowed eyes of a domino mask zero in on him- made his blood run cold.
Tim watched the empty Bat Burger cup drop onto the roof in what could only be described as abject horror, "Who, and I can't stress this enough, the fuck are you?"
Any moisture in Tim's mouth dried in half a heartbeat when his hero started towards him. "Uh—um," he fumbled to stash his camera back in his bag. "I'm uh—no one?"
Robin smiled in a way that was somehow still terrifying, "No one? Is that a family name?"
"No?" Tim was so screwed. Jason- Robin wouldn't hurt him, Robins never hurt kids, but if his parents found out about his nightly activities...
"You sure about that?" Robin was within reach now, his arms crossed around his middle, "You don't sound sure, no one. What're you doin' out here anyways?"
Tim inched backwards towards the fire escape as subtly as he could muster, "I'm a tourist?"
Robin's smile got even wider, "You're what- tourin' darkened rooftops?"
"And shady alleys!" Tim tried to joke, but it came out more as a squeak. Puberty sucks.
Robin laughed, and internally Tim screamed with accomplishment. He, Timothy Drake, the world's dorkiest shadow, had just made Jason Todd, ROBIN, laugh. Best night of his whole life, by miles. Life could not get better. Robin straightened, still smiling with his hands perched on his hips, "So no one, can this tour include a stop at the diner down the block? Dunno 'bout you, but I'm feelin' a waffle."
Tim wasn't opposed to being wrong.

Weekend Links, March 17, 2024
My posts
We have had another Trespasser Weirdness Incident at my house, so. Suffice it to say that the Hot & Vintage Movie Women tournament is my primary coping mechanism at this point, and bless @hotvintagepoll for all their work. All 257 polls are up, although many of them have already closed on a rolling basis these last two weeks. Hedy Lamarr vs Sonja Henie was the very last one, and it is a blowout like I have not seen since the time I asked if people throw away their movie theater trash. I think round 2 starts a week from Monday? I would like to apologize for reblogging every single poll, except that I’m not the least bit sorry.
I posted propaganda several times--sometimes just because a contestant didn’t have much and I wanted to chip in (still in play: Juanita Moore and Martha Sleeper). But I also showed up specifically for Norma Shearer, Claire Bloom, Tallulah Bankhead, Deborah Kerr, a little bit for Joan Fontaine (poll here), Julie Christie (on my mom’s behalf), Gene Tierney, Paulette Goddard, and Ava Gardner. My loyalties will shift as we see who progresses, but I'm wearing the Ava jersey at this point.
Reblogs of interest
A couple of serious links:
The Jewish filmmakers who won an Oscar for The Zone of Interest, a Holocaust film, used their speech time to condemn what’s happening in Gaza. (It helps to read the quote as “as men who refute {their Jewishness and the Holocaust} being used as justification.” “Refute their Jewishness” jumps out weirdly at first glance and confused people.)
I can’t tell if the JKR defender/Holocaust denier in this ask knows they’re lying or just really didn’t know that transgender health books and surgery did, in fact, exist, and that the Nazis targeted them. If you need photographic evidence for future discussions, here you are. Side note: Don't believe everything your favorite childhood author tells you.
Posts that are not serious links or hot lady polls:

So do you think Cassius' early experience with having to save who he could and survive Carrhea, hardened him in the same way that young Crassus was ? Is there some sort of constant cycle there ?
absolutely, it’s a whole trial by fire kind of deal, and everything in rome exists in repeating cycles. It’s all a circle, except for when it’s a mouth. and there’s actually a third one I would include in this set! in theory. to complete the narrative tragedy.
Crassus is in his thirties (like, late 20s when the ball gets rolling, but basically he’s in his 30s when things actually get going) when he rises to the occasion, cutting through bodies and paving the way for Sulla’s victories. This sets the stage for the next generation’s politics, the generation Cassius is a part of. It’s Sulla. Sulla haunts everything.
Cassius is most likely in his thirties, or enters into his thirties during Crassus’ Parthian invasion, and much like Crassus had to rise to the occasion against some pretty gnarly odds (in places), Cassius also had to rise to the occasion with even worse odds than Crassus ever had (talk about a narrative inheiritance! the book closes on Crassus and immediately looks to you to fill the space his body left), and pulled off several strategic miracles. Congrats on surviving the trial!
So
Carrhae is a traumatic disaster for Rome that haunts the subtext in a specific thread of expansionist Roman policy making, but more immediately, it fucks up the balance of power in Rome: Pompey and Caesar spin out into Civil War, Caesar stands triumphant. The dominoes continue to fall, Caesar is assassinated. Lucan’s focus on Crassus in his Pharsalia sort of nails Carrhae down as an event that has a definable Before/After in collective memory. etc.
This Sets The Stage For The Next Generation Of Roman Politics
Now, here’s the secret third one: Octavian is in his thirties when the culmination of his dynast war with Antony finally hits the climax at Actium, and this will set the stage for—
#This is actually half the reason the Cassius comic is going to be the sequel to Trikaranos#If I really wanted to commit to the theme there would be a third comic about the Octagon himself but I’m not doing that#ask tag#anyway. Cassius as a body substitute for Crassus or something.#I have a whole thing rattling around in my head about when plays cast an actor to play 2 characters#this is like if you had 2 guys playing the same role. or something#I got 3 hours of sleep last night can you tell

Hit me with some info about Custom of Fell Deeds pretty please?
TEEHEE
wip folder game
so this one is mostly in the concept stage still, but it's on the "when main wips hit block time" board. it was inspired by one of my all-time favorite movies, the death of stalin, and. well. honestly if you've seen the movie yeah that's the fic, we're doing death of stalin but make it the hegemony
the title comes from marc antony's famous speech in shakespeare's julius caesar, the same monologue that gave us "cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war". i have a few different fics planned that take their titles from that monologue, just because it's very fitting for the hegemony and the resistance as a whole. carrion men is a post-retaking of khar'shan examination of rebuilding, cry havoc is the formation of the resistance, etc. the specific line in use here is "All pity choked with custom of fell deeds", in reference to the hegemony's bloated, decaying culture and how the most horrific of sapient rights abuses are just commonplace and accepted because things have become so dire. but that's another discussion :)
effectively, this would be a big exploration of hegemony politics, i'm thinking right around the time of the hegemony closing their embassy on the citadel protesting humanity's expansion. the conclave, the ruling body and highest caste of the hegemony, is ostensibly elected, but passed laws to make themselves god-emperors for life and their seats hereditary many generations ago. when the speaker of the conclave, nokosvin pron'kerak, unexpectedly falls gravely ill in his home, his inner circle are thrown into a crisis of succession - nokosvin is unlikely to recover, but his only children are unable to take command, and now what?
nokosvin's second-in-command, ibaros krok'kah, takes command in his stead, but there's dissent in the ranks. sekath kherbavan, nokosvin's very best and favorite ass-kisser, sees himself as the true successor, and schemes to pull the rug out from under ibaros's feet. prathar has his own machinations, and sees an opportunity to take power himself by helping sekath, as does his usual crony ratosk. shahok hates all of these options, and rallies others to help him pull strings and quietly set everything up for a domino fall in the future.
and then nokosvin dies, and everything gets worse, because it comes out that his claim to his family's authority was never verified at all, and he legally shouldn't have even been allowed near the conclave chambers, much less running it.
it's gonna take a lot of 5d chess outlining but honestly. i cut my teeth in this fandom on writing xenopolitics fic, i LOVE political machinations bullshit, it would be such a fun little project to chew on for a while.

to end tonight on a different note, I did watch an episode of rome (again), so tomorrow will start up another round of debatably coherent ideas about how antony and brutus keep having realizations about the kind of narrative they’re in WAY too late to do anything about it
or alternatively, it’s just doomed men echoing each other, not realizing the trajectory they’re on
#the actual domino chain of death repeating itself is pompey > brutus > servilia > antony with brutus actually being the start#with his offhand party comments#also brutus/cassius isn't my thing but someday i'll tell you guys about the whole satan tempting eve in the garden thing#i wrote back in highschool for a theology class

The Gears are Turning
Tagging: Maritza and Augustin Del Castillo (Mentions of @antony-malinowski, @detkhamani, @thomas-meier) Time Frame: before the gotcha day A/N: Augustin doesn’t like how Seb is raising Leo and he’s got his mind set on changing it. Mari won’t accept her father destroying and meddling in her brother’s affairs. TW: Homophobia
Martiza was fuming and that in itself was an understatement. Instead of being happy for Sebastián, Leo, and Tony, their father was acting like a complete asshole. There was no surprises there however after the letter the patriarch had written Seb, Mari thought that maybe there was a change of heart. She hadn’t read it for herself and Cami seemed so convinced that maybe their father would have changed his mind about Seb’s life choices. She was glad that her brother was living his own life and happy with his husband and with the news of triplets on the way and Leo and Tony’s Gotcha day, there was plenty of reason for celebration. Too bad no one was talking to anyone and mom was too busy living in their dad’s ass. It was unfortunate, really. Arriving at Luna’s family restaurant, Mari parked her car across the street and spotted her father playing dominoes with his friends.
She marched right up to him and smacked his shoulder. “Hey. What’s your problem?”
His friends didn’t even bother to look up. Everyone was afraid of dad. Everyone but Mari. “So are you going to answer me....or?”
“What is this about, Maritza? I have a game.”
“I can see that but I have a legitimate question.” She placed her hands on her hips as she waited for an answer.
“It can’t wait?” Augustin continued played and Maritza moved to sit beside her father.
“No. It cannot wait. The Gotcha day is in a week. You’re really not going to show? Leo hasn’t heard from you in weeks, dad!”
“That’s your brother’s fault. He won’t encourage my only grandson to call me that’s his problem.”
“He’s ten! And my brother knows what he’s doing. What did you write in the letter anyway?” She grabbed a caddy and began stacking dominoes herself. She had no intention of playing but needed to keep her hands busy.
“Yes, he is ten and should know better. When I was ten, I was helping your abuela sow soles in shoes. They don’t want me in their life. I’m fine here.”
“Well this isn’t Guatemala, papi and something must have happened. Seb was ready to forgive you!”
“Forgive me? For what exactly?” Before Mari could answer, Leo was calling her and she showed her father the caller ID screen to let him know before picking up the call.
“Hey, Lee! Everything ok? Do you need me to get you from school?”
“No, uncle Khamani is coming with Cannon and Luna and uncle Thomas promised me lessons later. I was calling because dad is taking me to Harry Styles with pops! You wanna come with Cam? It’s in 4 weeks.”
“Yes! Your dad did mention that to me. Of course. I will be there. I’m talking to your abuelo right now so can I call you back?” The line went silent and all she heard was Leo clearing his throat.
“ok.”
The complete disillusion in her nephew’s voice made her frown and she knew her father could overhear. “I love you.” They ended the call and she gave her father the death glare.
“Do you hear his voice? He’s so scared even of your mention. You’re going to that Gotcha and you’re going to behave.”
“What does he mean Harry Styles Concert? He’s ten! Isn’t that the singer that walks around in skirts and feather boas?”
“Ohhh so now he’s too young for that but now sewing insoles into shoes? Dad, please. I’m wasting my time. I’m taking mom to that gotcha and if you don’t show, fine but you’re going to have to be a father to Seb and a grandfather to Leo someday. I’m so tired of this. This is his life and he chose it and he’s happy. Be happy for your kid, for God sakes!”
Augustin stood up and so did Mari, ready to go face to face with her father when he enveloped her into a shocking embrace. “I won’t go but I promise I’ll send a gift to Leo and Antony. Happy?”
Brows furrowed, she was surprised at the turn-around. She’d take something and this was something. “Okay. I gotta go back to work.”
As she pulled away, her phone rang again and this time it was her sister. “Call you back Cam...” She text her and began to back away from her father. Maritza was confused and concerned. Something seemed cryptic about all of this.
“Tell your brother to reconsider that stupid concert. What will Leo gain from that? He’s teaching him things he shouldn’t at such a young age!” Augustin called out but it was on deaf ears. Mari was already back on her phone.

Fallout Survey Results!
There were 69 responses this time around, aaand the results are in. This was a really random survey mostly based on pure curiosity, so make what you will of the results!
Without further ado, let’s get into it...
Which Fallout games have you played?
Which did you play first?
Which game is your favourite in terms of gameplay?
Which game is your favourite in terms of lore?
By the way, that one ‘other’ vote was my own, for Van Buren. If I had to stick to the canon games, I’d have gone with New Vegas, 100%.
Are they canon?
Tactics:
BOS:
Van Buren:
Where would you LIKE the next Fallout game to be set?
Here’s a map of how many times each state was specifically mentioned, because I'm a map nerd.
Top answer: Florida
It’s pretty clear that, as one respondent said, the people want swamp Fallout!
Other countries mentioned: Canada, Mexico, China, Australia, Cuba, UK
A few people just said the US in general for this and the next question, usually when their answer to the other question was a different country. I wasn’t really sure how to categorise that in terms of the way I chose to display the results, so I’ve left them out.
Where do you THINK the next Fallout game will be set?
Top Answer: New York
Other countries mentioned: Canada
A lot of people mentioned that they expect previous locations to be re-used, but didn’t specify which.
Favourite character
Arcade Gannon: 17 (a lot of my Fallout mutuals are Arcade stans, so there was probably a bit of bias here, but still, an impressive victory for Arcade!) Nick Valentine: 5 Craig Boone: 4 Rose of Sharon Cassidy: 4 Joshua Graham: 3 Raul Tejada: 3 Veronica Santangelo: 3 Fawkes: 3 Deacon: 2 John Hancock: 2 Courier Six: 2 Benny: 2 Lily Bowen: 2 Folks who got one vote: Goris (aside: THANK YOU for making me look up who this is, I have been blessed), Charon, John Henry Eden, Butch Deloria, Irving Gallows, X6-88, Harold, ED-E, Preston Garvey, Ronald Curtis/Picus, Cait, Gob, Ulysses and RJ MacCready
Least favourite character
Vulpes Inculta: 10 Shaun/Father: 8 Caesar: 7 Strong: 5 Paladin Danse: 4 Piper Wright: 3 Craig Boone: 2 Legate Lanius: 2 Parker Quinn: 2 Daniel (from Honest Hearts): 2 Jericho: 2 And the list with one vote: Antony, Mortimer, Three Dog, Princess, Dean Domino, Myron, Cait, Roger Maxson, Arthur Maxson, Justin Ayo, Colonel Autumn, Joshua Graham, Colin Moriarty, Aaron Kimball, Alistair Tenpenny, Ulysses and Robert Edwin House
Favourite faction
Followers of the Apocalypse: 30 (holy moly lol) New California Republic: 7 Minutemen: 6 Railroad: 5 The Kings: 4 Yes Man: 4 Brotherhood of Steel: 4 Caesar's Legion: 2 Enclave: 2 The Institute: 1 Great Khans: 1 Westside: 1 Megaton: 1 Ghoul settlements in general: 1
Favourite DLC
Old World Blues: 14 Dead Money: 12 Nuka World: 9 Far Harbor: 7 Lonesome Road: 6 Honest Hearts: 6 Point Lookout: 5 Broken Steel: 3 Operation Anchorage: 1 Mothership Zeta: 1 The Pitt: 1
When you think of a chem that removes addictions, which comes to mind first?
When you think of Harold, which version of him do you picture?
The fate of cats
New Plague symptoms
Does Duncan MacCready have the New Plague?
Are any characters secretly synths?
The synth-accused: Sole Survivor, Ulysses, Easy Pete, most birds, Travis Miles, Courier Six, Colter, Deacon, Mr House (’just for fun’), Piper, and many settlers in general
Also, @ respondent that I’m pretty sure was @hiscotti-biscotti... 👀👀👀
Which New Vegas ending would you pick to be canon?
And finally, a handpicked selection of the gushing comments (got a bit long because there were so many I liked too much!)...
I wish they made the main quest harder to acces and finish, or to have more step to it... because once I played it one the experience wouldn't be the same. It so amazing discovering new location and being like 'I'm gonna explore that' so damn good.
The fallout franchise has one of the most beautiful heavy lore ridden world I've ever seen
I love the theme of change in the west coast trilogy and how strongly it contrasts the game's moto of "war never changes". I love how you can look at the changes to the NCR from shady sands to the republic but I also love how you can look at the Khans. People and factions do change, but waging war over petty dramas never does, you can escape it, but only if you admit you were wrong and change for the better.
I love the world and the characters. There is always some fucked up shit in the past that has a chance of snowballing into worse shit in the current time, like the cazadores and the new plague. And when characters are written well, they have a chance of being the coolest part of the games, like with Nick Valentine/Hancock or any of the characters of New Vegas.
When things get creepy it's wonderful. More in the vein of Dead Money or the Glowing Sea please!
I love how in NV the apocalypse isn’t just the end of everything. There’s still culture! There’s towns! There’s just people vibing! It feels less like the apocalypse and more like a developed area that is experiencing a war. People moved on after 200 years. Because that’s what people do.
The hopefulness of rebuilding.
Hhhh LORE!!! Apocalypse aesthetic!!!!! HOPE AND LIGHT AND HEALING AND GOODNESS AND ALSO COOL WASTELAND SHIT AND DEATHCLAWS... fallout good.....
oh my god i love arcade gannon so much i dont know why but i am literally about to start studying latin at uni because of him.
Can I just say I love how fnv gave us LGBT characters without making the fact that they're lgbt their entire personality.
I can go through abandoned buildings without getting arrested.
I love that it's helped me make so many new friends and has reignited my creative drive.
Say what you will about robot fetishists but Fisto was the greatest thing to happen to the series. A true icon and reminder of wonderful writing and character design. They may say you can't make a flawless character, but I say "look at Fisto". Don't boo me, I'm right.

Sean Taylor destroys the Pulp Heroes
As promised, here is my destructive mind unleashed on the classic pulp magazine heroes. For this little thought experiment, I'm recreating these characters in the time period of the actual pulp magazines, as if published in an alternate universe. I’m also trying to stick to the magazine characters.
Without any further delay, you may totally hate me now in case I have spread my nonsense all over one of your faves.
The Avenger -- Upon returning home to the U.S., David Cowen was lynched because he dared to publicly hug a white female friend he had met in Paris while touring with a jazz ensemble, but his story didn't end there. He was reborn to seek retribution for all who were punished unjustly, whether by mob violence, the justice system, or by killers who thought they got away with it.
The Black Bat -- Emily Jenkins used to have it all, but when her family name was smeared and her family fortune lost when he father was taken by authorities and blamed for an attempted assassination of the touring President Roosevelt, she grew bitter and swore she’d get even and steal it all back. As the thief and assassin, the Black Bat, she targets those she believes were responsible for her family’s ruin.
Captain Future -- A disgraced spiritualist who really can see roughly seven minutes into the future, but failed as a medium to the high society because they wanted more than that, Antony Fratelli decided to end it all when he just happened to be able to glimpse the future of a woman near him who was about to be kidnapped. Using his knowledge of the future, he saved her life and was able to disable the two kidnappers. Now revitalized, he wears a cap and full face mask as Captain Future and seeks to protect those who don’t know yet that danger is just around the corner.
Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective -- Dan Turner just escaped from an asylum, where he has been for 12 years after convicted of murder (he may or may not have committed, he remembered nothing about it) but considered unfit for trial due to his mental state. But how long can he keep the truth hidden, especially when a real PI shows up trying to track him down.

That night he made a hooded mask and built a mechanical brace to enable him to seek justice on the streets. Don’t expect mercy from Doctor Death.
Ki-Gor -- Franklin Anderson was an actor, portraying the serial’s greatest matinee hero -- Ki-Gor the Jungle King. Only, an accident almost killed him and left him in a coma. When he awoke, he believed himself to truly be the jungle king he portrayed on screen, and now he only pretends to be Franklin Anderson by day, determined to prove himself the king of this new jungle in which he finds himself. And to do that, he must first protect from anyone who seeks to hurt his new subjects.
The Phantom Detective -- Jeremy McDonald died in 1786, but that didn’t stop him. Finally aware of her and her vendetta, the Andressi mob has called in a Voodoo priest to capture her and control her as a tool for the mob.
The Spider (Arachne) -- Beware Arachne, criminal scum. Her touch is poison. Madeline Wilshire was born into one of the oldest and richest families in New Hampshire, but not even that could save her from being cursed by a Shaman from whom her father stole a tribal heirloom. Born with a touch that can seep a deadly poison, she was kept locked away for years until she was old enough to be sent away to an asylum in New York. Learning how to control her curse, she was able to finally be released at age 21. Now refusing to have anything to do with her family, she has decided to create a new life for herself in the Big Apple and just maybe trying out her hand as the vigilante schtick with her venomous abilities as an asset for once and not just a curse.

Or will her determination be enough to help her succeed?
Green Lama -- Born on Mars, D’jrk spent centuries studying and learning to fit into Earth culture. Now he has a family and a job as a district attorney in Los Angeles. He has avoided using his otherworldly abilities for years, but since his 10 year old daughter Margaret has begun to show signs of such abilities, he decides that it’s time to teach her now to use them without being discovered, even by her mother. And the best way to do that is to blend in with the new capes and masks crowd that is appearing all over the U.S.
Jim Anthony, Super Detective -- A former cop with a perfect record of closing murder cases, Jack Yeoman was gunned down by the local gangster with a grudge. After healing, Jack changed his name to Jim Anthony and used the scars from his shooting (body and face) to open up shop as a P.I. with an ego as big as his abilities -- The Super Detective!
Moon Man -- Moon Man isn’t even a man. Darla Hopkins has been on the run from her cult family and pretending to be a man for so long thanks to her (as she was told growing up) unwomanly build, she can barely remember growing up as a girl. Moving from circus to circus as a strongman (she always had been stronger than her brothers), and taking odd jobs as she could, she never stayed in one place for long -- until she met Lorraine Pierce during her stay in Nashville. Now, determined to stay and finally create a life for herself and Lorraine, she continues to pretend and has even allowed Lorraine to convince her to join the ranks of costumed vigilantes as Moon Man, since she patrols and protect under the light of the moon -- with Lorraine as her sidekick, Luna, of course.
Golden Amazon -- Discovered in 1894 in a dig in the jungles of South America, a solid gold statue of a beautiful woman was excavated and brought back to New York and placed on exhibit at the Grover Museum of Antiquities. But when a child with one brown eye and one blue eye is born to the Mayor of New York, the statue suddenly comes to life. It’s mission -- to destroy the child prophesied to bring about the end of the world.

antoni isn't a horrible evil human to the best of my knowledge but he reminds of this guy i vaguely knew from gsa in high school who will take these really bad pictures of himself at the beach and then add captions that are like "dominoes sucks i hope they fire me". And then adds the same picture on his three finstas.
sjhfdgksjdfgh.. he reminds me of this guy at my high school who comes from a ridiculously rich family and is also super popular. i think he has an unfair advantage when it comes to social situations because he is pretty and rich. he also takes a ridiculous number of ap classes and participates a lot in class discussions to the point where he’s monopolizing the conversation. and he posts super thotty pictures on his instagram including one where he’s shirtless at a party with the david bowie zigzag thing on his chest and another one where he’s at pride wearing a leather crop top and booty shorts and the captions are always something vague and super pretentious
#asks#Anonymous#thats so funny that antoni gives off thotty high school gsa guy vibes to both of us... he just has that energy

It seems like the only time I make a post anymore is to write an obituary, which is pretty sad. But this past Tuesday - October 9th - beloved stop-motion animator Will Vinton passed away at age 70. Vinton is best remembered as the creator of such popular ad campaigns as the California Raisins and the Domino’s Pizza Noid, which he brought to life via claymation. Vinton was born on Nov. 17th, 1947, in McMinnville, Oregon, which is just southwest of Portland. His father was a car dealer and his mother a banker and bookkeeper. Will enrolled in the University of California, Berkeley with his aim being to studying architecture. Though seemingly a million miles away from singing fruits made of clay, it was Vinton’s interest in architecture - specifically the intricate Modernist stylings of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí - that lead to his career in claymation. “If I really wanted to be inspired by designs like Gaudí’s, I had to throw away the T square and straight edge and grab some Plasticine clay,” said Vinton in a 2011 speech delivered to the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, Colorado, “I started modeling and designing by way of sculpting.” It was this which lead Vinton into experimenting with stop-motion claymation and eventually to his first short-film, CLOSED MONDAYS (1974), which took 18-months to shoot but resulted in Vinton winning an Academy Award for best animated short. Vinton would go on to found his own production company, Will Vinton Studios*, where he would produce more short films like MARTIN THE COBBLER (1977), based on the Tolstoy short story; the Oscar nominated RIP VAN WINKLE (1978); THE LITTLE PRINCE (1979); and eventually his first full-length animated feature THE ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN (1985), which he also directed. If you’ve never seen it MARK TWAIN is brilliant with the stand-out sequence being an utterly nightmarish adaptation of Twain’s never completed existentialist novel “The Mysterious Stranger” (1897-1908). In the mid-1980s, Vinton was contracted to do stop-motion effects for Disney’s RETURN TO OZ (1985); a film intended to serve as an unofficial sequel to the classic 1939 THE WIZARD OF OZ produced by MGM and starring Judy Garland. RETURN is actually much closer to the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum, which means that it is a decidedly darker and more surreal film then the ‘39 musical. As a result it was a box-office flop, but did garner Vinton yet another Oscar nomination for his frightening stop-motion Nome King. But we’re here to talk about dinosaurs and like almost all stop-motion animators Vinton also tried his hand at bringing those terrible lizards back to life. In 1980, Vinton created a 13-minute educational short called DINOSAURS which is presented in the style of an elementary school presentation in which a dinosaur obsessed student named Phillip vies for the attention of his rambunctious classmates while doing a class presentation on dinosaurs. You can find it on Archive.org. The claymation dinosaurs start off cartoonish with an anthropomorphic Styracosaurus named Herb and T. rex named, what else, Rex but eventually gives way to more “realistic” dinosaurs as the short goes on. The dinosaurs are far from paleontologically accurate with multiple species from different geological eras co-existing and some engaging in some decidedly strange behaviors (such as a Brontosaurus that seems to be devouring the eggs in another dino’s nest!), but the overall look and feel of the sequence is wonderful with the only downside being the combination of Phillip’s increasingly spasmodic narration coupled with the incessant commentary from his classmates. In 1985 the documentary MORE DINOSAURS, hosted by Gary Owens and Eric Boardman, featured an abridged version of the same animation sans Phillip and his classmates’ peanut gallery commentary. This is how I originally saw Vinton’s DINOSAURS and in my opinion is the superior way to view it. Unfortunately it’s not available online - though it is on DVD. What is online, and embedded above, is the 1987 documentary, DINOSAURS! – A FUN-FILLED TRIP BACK IN TIME!, which again featured the unabridged short along with a new 15-minute prologue in which Phillip is played by actor Fred Savage - of THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) and THE WONDER YEARS (1988-93) - despite the obvious fact that Savage’s voice is not the same as the original Phillip. *It’s worth noting that Will Vinton Studios was the forerunner of Laika, the stop-motion powerhouse currently responsible for such films as CORALINE (2009), PARANORMAN (2012), and KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS (2016). Unfortunately the circumstances under which this transition took place are rather melancholy. Basically, in the 1990s, Will Vinton opened his studio to investors. In 1998, Phil Knight, owner of Nike, bought a controlling share of the company, evidently because his son was an aspiring stop-motion animator. Eventually, in 2002, Vinton was kicked out of his own company and Knight’s son was promoted to president. In 2005 the company was rebranded as Laika.
