I was achievement hunting in hl2ep2 the past few days and was inspired to draw a bunch of doodles related to the get some grub achievement

more doodles below the keep reading line cause i made quite a lot of doodles and didn't wanna fill yalls timeline with a ton of antlion grubs LMAO

I found an insect last week I’ve wanted to see for as long as I’ve known they existed: a mantisfly! this one is Zeugomantispa minuta, the only species commonly observed where I live.

mantisflies (family Mantispidae) are named for their resemblance to mantises (order Mantodea) but themselves belong to the order Neuroptera, being related to lacewings and antlions. as adults, they closely resemble mantises, and live a similar lifestyle capturing prey with raptorial forelegs.

compared to this Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis), there are a few anatomical differences you might notice, but the biggest difference between the two is definitely their reproductive strategy.

mantises lay egg cases and develop from nymphs that resemble adults. being neuropterans, mantispid juvenile are larvae. but mantispid larvae, unlike their lacewing and antlion relatives, aren’t predators, they’re parasites! Zeugomantispa follow the strategy of starting as a leggy, highly active larva that on hatching immediately seeks out a spider egg sac to burrow into, growing into a plump grub quite different from its original appearance after feeding on the eggs. other mantispid larvae attach themselves to the adult spiders, and wait for their host to produce a sac; still others parasitize beetle or wasp larvae.

ok but xen fauna cuisine has got to be either strangely delicious or some of the most vile shit ever concocted by both human and vortikind.

I feel like an antlion grub fried up and coated in herbs and spices will be either the most rejuvenating or the most vile meal ever. The most healthy meal in the half life universe is eating an antlion grub whole and raw. This thing beats any earthly fruit or vegetable. Headcanoning now that this was Alyx's equivalent of "eat your greens" growing up. Mysterious antlion compounds will save you.

Go ahead and eat that whole globule of Larval Extract, Freeman. It does wonders for the integrity of your vortal tether. Cleanse your cords. Consume nothing but extract for a month and see the wonders it will do to the mind and the body. Blend it into a smoothie and chug it every day.

Sorry you can't see the creature he's frying on the spike but basically I think fast headcrabs are probably the shittiest fucking thing you could eat. I bet they're 90% like the soft fatty part of meat that's gross and stretchy. Gross! Instead Put A Xen Grenade Into Your Mouth

Two renders i made about relationships Simius have with some factions. I wanted to make one for the human resistance too but i had no ideas for a doodle..so that's for the future. The alien wildlife was a major threat in the beginning, until they adapted around them. In particular simius have a mutual relationship with antlions, where they are free to run around their nests as they take care of pests that threaten the grubs. So free food and free protection. The combine are completely disinterested in them, though their presence is not welcomed in strongholds. They are akin to mice to them, so to speak. Or whatever other pest.
