How is it Created: Obsidian is a black volcanic glass, formed when molten lava hits cold water or air and solidifies. It is composed of silicon dioxide (quartz) and many impurities which allows it to take different shapes and colors. Black obsidian gets it coloring from iron and magnesium.

History: The earliest obsidian tools can be dated back to the Oldowan, at the dawn of the Paleolithic/Stone Age (2.6 million- 10,000 BCE). Different origins of this rock can be found in Britain, Italy, Mexico, and the USA. In Egypt, obsidian knives were used in ceremonial circumcisions, as well as making mirrors (scrying mirrors for most) and other decorations in tombs. The word “Obsidian” was first used by a Roman explorer, Obsius, who “discovered” it in Ethiopia. In the Americas, Obsidian was used as a symbol of Tezcatlipoca, the chief god of the Aztec religion. Tezcatlipoca means “smoking mirror” which is why a lot of the Mayan priest used the glass rock for scrying mirrors like the Egyptians did. On the Eastern Islands, obsidian was used to make the eyes of the Moai statues before they were lost. The indigenous tribes of North America used pieces of obsidian to make arrowheads, spears and even knives by using an antler in order to carefully form different shapes.

How to Charge:

Sit with the stone in the palm of your hand and enter a light meditation. Use your thoughts to charge the stones with desires of protection and make sure the thoughts are clear and concise.

Use high vibration to amplify the crystal

Use a singing bowl to send sound energy into it

Place it in a bed of Himalayan salt and let it sit for 48 hours

If you work with a sun or moon deity, I have noticed charging it in the sun or moonlight with the idea of protection helps to charge it as well

How to Cleanse:

Run under water (not hot just lukewarm) for a minute

Create a saltwater solution and submerge it for up to 24 hours

Burn herbs or incense over the obsidian with the intention of cleansing (I personally use sandalwood incense for this)

Leave your stone under the full moon to cleanse and retrieve in the morning

Bury your obsidian in your garden for 48 hours

How to Get the Best Out of It:

Wear a black obsidian bracelet. The wrist area is a highly energetic zone because it has nearly direct access to the bloodstream. This (in my opinion) is the best place to have obsidian to create a powerful shield and help with manifestation.

For lighter dosage, use an obsidian ring.

In the years following her first death, Calliope waited patiently in Elysium to be rescued, but eventually stopped trying to wait after Kratos left.

She was very depressed and desperate, so when the opportunity came in the form of Artemis collecting her, she jumped at it.

Her stag curse is a direct result of the mentality ‘sins of the parent are the sins of the children’, which Artemis held close. She was slain and reanimated countless times for over two hundred years, and it wore her down.

While Calliope made an effort to become part of the Huntresses, it was realistically a trap for Artemis to find an outlet to punish Kratos.

Despite her bitterness, Artemis did care about her huntresses, but it was very much an overbearing kind of care.

Calliope, though holding the brunt of the trauma, considered Artemis her first real friend.

Artemis’ death was entirely due to her begging Calliope to end her, believing the cycle would be broken if she did so. Callie opted for a painless route bc as much as Artemis had hurt her she'd never wish that pain on anyone.

No matter what universe, Calliope regularly has nightmares. Wether it’s of her death at Kratos’ hand, or the torture at Artemis’, it’s pretty common for her to experience such night terrors, and spend countless hours awake rather than asleep

Thyella was crafted by Vulcan after Calliope took her place as ‘Diana’ It is made from a manticore’s obsidian stinger, calliope’s flute by the same name, and calliope’s own blood.

When she took up the role as Diana, the only gods that had been resurrected were Mars, Vulcan, Jupiter, Mercury, Juno and Neptune.

Calliope took on Pluto and Proserpina’s roles as as a redult. Her role as a Death Goddess plays both into the lore surrounding Helblindi, but also is a direct result of Calliope surviving death/dying multiple times but never truly dying.

Her magic takes the form of blue fire, since it’s incredibly hot. Additionally, it’s a subtle reference to her death goddess role since spirits are often depicted as being surrounded in blue fire in many media pieces.

Calliope likes just being around people in silence.

Her nickname growing up was “αφθές” or Thrush bc thrushes have a flute-like call/whistle.

She has anger issues, due to unresolved trauma. But, she works through them via breathing excises.

The scars on her arms and chest are a result of the Blases of Chaos. But, her eye scar, and bandages come from protecting scars she got from Artemis’ huntresses.

Calliope has a habit of pushing herself beyond her physical limitations. She is physically disabled but often finds herself in a position of forgetting that’s the case until it directly affects her.

She distrusts strangers on a default. Calliope would tell you it’s because she has trauma, but it also is because she knows that the world is cruel. Despite her traumas, she makes an effort to be a ray of sunshine, and often makes an effort to help others when she can.

As she ages despite having no contact with Kratos whatsoever in centuries, Calliope takes up a lot of his mannerisms.

Her lyre is Kratos’ old one. She found it being sold at a market when traveling across the world in search of him. She is particularly fond of it.

“Though, in her defense, not that she was defending herself from anything except her own thoughts, Artemis’ death hadn’t been one out of vengeance. At least, not in her eyes. In the eyes of a younger Calliope, she’d gotten justice for years of torture and suffering, for broken wings and broken bones and an antler that no longer grows in all the way, broken halfway down. Artemis had deserved it. Because Justice was due. A much older Calliope would disagree. Justice, sure she had been seeking, but vengeance and justice go hand in hand. They’re inseparable. 6. How did you choose your OC’s name?

Pluto Carousel is literally just called that because I liked the sounds together lol (this is pretty much how I name all my Infraflux characters). The Pluto part was a vague connection to the underworld god since he's big and blue and stoic. However, I've since changed his antler design to something more fanciful and symbolic, so that got me thinking: Maybe one of his ancestors supplied the name "Carousel" by way of literally looking like a carousel creature? He's very very slightly inorganic (the tips of his horns and claws are natural brass) so it would make sense for that reason as well!

15. How does your OC take up space? What do they do with their hands when they talk, or how do they sit in chairs?

Effa would LOVE to take up more space than they actually do (ha ha small) so they compensate by looking haughty and talking loud. Lots of sweeping dismissive gestures and full body emoting. Of course when they have their demon hands out they REALLY take up space and everybody has to pay attention and make way for GIANT RAINBOW HANDS which I'm sure was part of the appeal of their partnership. Effa sits on chairs like a typical gay i.e.: never both feet on the floor.

12. What does their bed and/or desk look like? Tidy or cluttered - are they both the same, or is one neat and the other messy?

Effa has an apartment in the Trade Union (the second biggest country after Infraflux, very hypercapitalist) that's obnoxiously, impractically stylish and their bed matches this. It's probably easily big enough for someone twice their size, very soft, and looks atrocious (think colourful brown/orange/zebra patterning with gold pillows and burgundy sheets).

Effa doesn't have a desk, however they do have a workbench! Despite being a horrible little gremlin of a creature Effa is also a very competent magic user, and built and implanted their witchblades themselves (the metal bits on their spine that link them to their demon partner). Their workbench doesn't look much like a workbench though because Effa prefers to work hunched over "on the ground" so it's more like a weird raised floor with an anvil/forge near the back and half-finished magical materials scattered around and arcane drawings scrawled all over it. Imagine a messy child's playroom floor but there's knives and hammers and maybe a few spots of blood. Obviously this workroom is its own, very private place that is locked and kept separate from the rest of their tres chic apartment.

A set of solar system based dragons I’ve been trying to finish for awhile!

Design notes:

• Sun- I tried to base a lot of their characteristics off of the way solar flares look. Additionally, since the sun is at the center, it isn’t orbiting like the rest of the set so they are posed in more of a curled position than most of the dragons.

• Mercury- Honestly, a surprising amount of the design decisions here were based off of a greyhound. The speckled pattern and broken horn are supposed to show the collisions that have occurred on this planet. Since it is one of the few without atmosphere, this poor fellow does not get fur, but to make up for that, I added in its magnetic field since apparently that does the most to protect from the sun for this planet.

• Venus and Earth: Venus and earth were designed to look very similar. They are often referred to as twins, so it was fitting. Venus was designed to have a much more rocky looking exterior and a lot of thick atmosphere, while earth was supposed to look more animal-like (Earth has patches and antlers for example). Additionally, earth’s design includes its most important feature: water to set the dragons apart from one another.

• Mars- This dragon has a few different patches and ridges to represent its surface and icy sections, and a ample helping of atmosphere. Not much in particular to say about them, but I do like their short tail :).

• Jupiter- The first gas giant! I decided to differentiate the gas giants by giving them a different type of body to fit their composition: they have more skeletal frames with a ton of fluff covering or obscuring it. Also since Jupiter is covered in storm spots, this dragon got almost butterfly-like patterns on its wings as well as a fun eye spot. They ended up being one of my favorites.

• Saturn- I don’t know how successful this was, but I tried to incorporate Saturn’s rings through their pose and their horns. Plus the octagonal storm living on their forehead.

• Uranus- this was the first ice giant! I tired to give them a more spikey, crystalline appearance. This also was a favorite to me (and not just because of the jokes I could make while talking about drawing them).

• Neptune- like Venus and earth, I tried to draw Uranus and Neptune in a similar manner. Neptune has more mass, but less volume than Uranus, so they had more ice and spikes, but less fuzz than Uranus.

• Pluto- last, but certainly not least, Pluto! Their design ended up pretty similar to mercury, but according to the Pluto Wikipedia page, it has an atmosphere and possibly water as well. This means this little guy got some fluff and a bit of water on top of their patches of color!

I cannot wait to color these! I also plan to do the asteroid belts and a few more of the dwarf planets and significant objects in our system.

On The Road Again

When we begin the session, we immediately go into more discussion about the deities and I/Arabelle offer them some information to give the party an idea of what we are working with.

The Lady of the Forest, also known as The Seeker, was commonly associated with things like Divination, past, future, fate, flowers, vegetation, wildlife, life cycle. Out of character I gave the examples of the Three fates and Persephone so my players could understand the vibes I was aiming for. Her symbols include antlers, ravens / raven wings, wreaths of flowers. Her domains would have been Nature, Life.

The Lady of the Swamp, also known as The Weaver, commonly was associated with Connection to The Weave, Magic, Water in all its forms, dreams, nightmares. The examples I gave were Hecate, Mystra, and Eldath. Her symbols were usually spiders, snakes, boar tusks, reeds. Her domains were Knowledge and Trickery.

The Lady of the Mountain was also known as The Huntress. Her usual associations were death, Afterlife, precious stones, ores, and metals, lightning and thunder. I described her as having big Pluto vibes. Her symbols were a wolf head with ram horns, ram horns alone, and gemstones. Her domains would have been Death and Tempest. She also gets a little extra bit of lore: She is a grim reaper-like character, or rather a grim hunter. With a pack of wolves at her heels she hunts for those whose time has come to an end, never missing with her spear.

They go back to their home for the rest of the day to discuss this heap of information. They also spitball ideas as to who might make good champions. Vondal thinks Jander and Ireena, Bedlam thinks Victor and Stella.

Sergei says that he thinks Okrin and Jander would make good guardians while Ireena would make a good priestess. He knows that Okrin and Jander have zealous faith for their deities and sees that as an ideal quality. He also feels that they would be fully capable of preserving the longevity of the shrines. He also feels like the position of priestess is not unlike the position she would have had in the Church of Saint Alexei, had she stayed there. He’s also hoping, maybe a little selfishly, that some divine protection would aid her in the fight against Strahd.

For the first time, the spirit of the previous owner of Okrin’s cursed spear speaks to him from the weapon. Kavan also pushes for Okrin to take one of the positions of guardian. If he were not worthy to, he would not have been granted the benefits of the spear. 

Okrin seems flattered but mentions he wasn’t really planning on sticking around after all this was over and done with. Jander says it sounds like a dream but he doesn’t know if he’d be accepted by followers of the Ladies since he’s a vampire. This is where Kavan chimes in and tells Okrin that Jander needs to stop whining, when Kavan was alive he was known as the Living Vampire because he drank blood. Jander is still skeptical and says times have changed a great deal. “Let’s cross that bridge when we get to it, shall we?”

They suspect that if Ireena takes the priestess position, she can still get her lycanthropy cured that way. “Does she even want her lycanthropy cured?” Bedlam’s player thinks to ask. I tell them that I and she don’t really know. She doesn’t like the pain of transforming, but she likes the power and freedom that come with her forms. I think the thought of trying to tame her lycanthropic nature has crossed her mind.

Ireena and Vondal take their wolfsbane tinctures and everyone turns in for the night. Except, they find out Ilya is a born werewolf. They are able to safely lock him in the wine cellar, though one of their couches is destroyed in the process. In the morning they find out from him that his lycanthropic nature just started showing itself not too long ago, some nights he can control it better than others, but he’s still learning. He tells them normally the Krezkov children get restrained in the cellar of the house. One of the nights Ilya wanted to prove himself and snuck out of the basement and ended up getting snagged by the werewolf pack. 

Ilya doesn’t know that his twin Peitra was killed in the werewolf raid that night, nor does he know Peitra was brought back by the Abbess.

Around 10 am, the party leaves Vallaki for Krezk on a mission to deliver Ilya to his family. They decided to bring Ireena, Jander, and Lancelot with them this time.

They Let Ireena drive the cart this time with Jander sitting up front with her. Vondal, Bedlam, Ilya, and Lancelot hang out inside the cabin while Veledrel and Okrin sit on the roof of the wagon.

Okrin notices a foot trail branching from the main road. They pull over to investigate and find a spike pit without falling into it. At the bottom of it lie spikes and several skeletons, animal and human. Veledrel shoots some fire bolts into the pit to destroy the spikes and hopefully save someone in the future. On the way back to the wagon they muse and wonder who’s trap that might be.

They reach a point where the road branches off in several directions and resting near the signpost is a wagon and a family tending to the horses. After talking to them the party found out they are leaving Zeidenburg because a man’s head spontaneously exploded and they were afraid to live there after that. The party quietly suspected Lyssa as they boarded their own wagon again and headed on their way.

After a while of travel, the sound of a herd of goats comes from the woods. Bedlam is curious and has the wagon stopped and goes to investigate with Okrin, Veledrel says “let me know if you need anything burned!” and stays with the wagon and everyone else. In the woods, they find basically a gibbering mouther but made out of goats. Bedlam quickly calls for the rest of the party, and Vel because this definitely needs to be burned. They all fight the horrible creature and kill it after a few rounds and move on down the road.

They have a few encounters they avoid by helping Ireena make the animal handling checks to maneuver past them.

At one point the fog thickens and they see bodies hanging from the trees, all of them the same classes as the players. They are thoroughly creeped out by this but they carry on.

It starts getting dark and they decide to pull over and spend a night in the Tower on the Lake. It's like a second home at this point. They deal with their lycanthropic companions accordingly and have a decent night together.

They waste no time in the morning getting back on the road to Krezk. Jander takes some time to sleep in the wagon.

One of the notable interactions they had was at the next crossroads. They could see someone wearing a long red cloak followed by a carriage coming from Tsolenka Pass. They hear a familiar laugh and debate whether or not they should engage with Anastrasya, but they ultimately decide to see what’s up.

She rides up on an undead warhorse and heckles them. Bedlam inquires as to what brings her to these parts and she explains that she was in Ziedenburg inducting Bugomistress Wachter and she’s also now tasked with bringing this gift back to Castle Ravenloft. As it turns out, the gift is a young girl, and she’s part of a monthly tithe to Count Strahd.

Bedlam heckles her about Strahd running an orphanage with Gertruda being there too. Anastraya says they’ll probably just toss this new girl in the woods and let Volenta hunt her for sport, “at least that would be entertaining!” she laughs. She also mentions to them that Ludmilla fed some lady to her pet Hugo- some little pet the abbott was working on? Tore her to pieces like she was nothing. 

Rahadin, on his own undead warhorse from behind the carriage, clears his throat, signaling to Anastrasya to get moving. Bedlam goes to pet her warhorse and casts dispel magic, causing her to fall to the ground. He laughs and she snarls, picking herself up. She swings at him with her claw attack, landing one and dealing 11 damage. She also shoves him prone and laughs at him. He picks himself up, his chest bleeding and his shirt ripped, he climbs up on the wagon and says “Okay guys enough messing around, let’s go” and they get moving. Anastrasya looks back at Bedlam and casts Message, saying “Tell me where I can find you tonight,”

To which he replies, “Meet me outside Krezk after nightfall, if you can sneak away that long." Once Bedlam was certain he was out of her sight, he let Veledrel heal him.

After driving on the road for a while, they notice the flickering of a campfire and the sound of a kerfuffle. The party pulls over to investigate and all roll amazing stealth. They approach the scene to find three beastfolk from the Abbey. After listening to them for a minute, they gather that the beastfolk have left the Abbey and are struggling to survive on their own in the woods. They were currently arguing over starting a campfire. The party didn’t really feel comfortable revealing themselves, so Veledrel ended up firebolting the fire into existence timed with the beastfolk striking the flint. They let the folk celebrate amongst themselves as they snuck back to the wagon and went along their merry way.

They rattle down the road for a bit longer and can see the Krezk junction just up ahead. We thought that was a perfect place to end the session for the day!
