im blacklisting the anti tag for a few cause it's been great to talk about things that bother me but it's intersecting with my spring mania in ways that aren't always rewarding cause i feel my brain burning after i hit post on a lengthy screed lmao
we ask her to take a break and i shall listen to my brain and do it myself
love you guys including people who like her music without being apologists for the problematic, and unpaid brand boosters

Man it sucks how I used to like Taylor Swift's music, and I actually liked her during those years she dated Joe Alwyn, where she became more of an activist, but surprise surprise, once they broke up suddenly SHE was the victim and HE was the monster, and any activism she supported is suddenly non-existent. And, as a Palestinian-American, I hate that she hasn't said one thing about the genocide that's going on; meanwhile it warms my heart that Joe has signed the Artists4Ceasefire letter and has shared articles about the genocide to raise awareness. Taylor is literally almost 35, she's a grown-ass woman and yet she's still behaving like an immature teenager; she doesn't use her platforms for something good or raising awareness, and instead chooses to suck the dicks of racist/sexist/ableist men like Matty Healy and Travis Kelce. I can't believe I didn't notice it sooner, just how horrible of a person she is. It's disappointing when someone you once idolized when you were younger turns out to be awful. #AntiTaylorSwift
PS I chose to reach out to you because you've used the "#anti taylor swift" hashtag before, I hope you don't mind 🙏🏽
No I don’t mind. Drag that hoe

man your t-sw*ft stuff is so insightful. what are your thoughts on the way she micro manages and kinda fictionalises her own public image? Her poems (aside from being... not good) weirded me out cause she wrote about her third person self in a way that made 'T*ylor' almost a mythical level tortured heroine, (clunkily) using abstracts to convey big scope emotions and ideas about... herself... like she's overly enamoured with the narrative of herself (the LWYMMD video was a great example of this)
HAHA friend, since u mentioned tay’s poetry, do i have the movie parallel for you
so there’s this 2007 film starring romola garai called “Angel”, about a romance novelist at the dawn on the 20th century who is this completely self-engrossed waif
Tumblr media
she reaches a certain level of success at a young age with her mary-sue ish romances in which she’s the heroine 100% of the time and the prose is more purple than your aunt’s varicose. and let’s just say that it kind of all goes to her head. she’s a pretty modest lowbrow writer who thinks she’s a true “artiste”. like she’s the exact swift-ian narcissist. and well, you do feel for her because she lives in this world of imagined grandeur and delusion.
Tumblr media
for her, the world has to be a reflection of herself, and everything has to be idealized and romantic and adolescent. and anyone who doesn’t worship her in this ideal utopia is her worst enemy.
also she gets married to michael fassbender (early role of his!) and he’s this shady painter who feeds her this narrative that she’s the greatest woman alive, while kinda exploiting her on the side. yet she romanticizes the hell out of him and engineers all sorts of dramatic scenarios for them
like tell me this doesn’t look familiar
Tumblr media
at one point, fassbender tells her he’s painting a great portrait of her, which for “Angel” is a huuuuge turn-on because she loves to surround herself with idealized images of herself. except, it turns out his painting is *gasp* not a rendition of her as a flawless maiden surrounded by cherubs and dancing kittens?? it’s actually an imperfect, realistic portrait of a woman struggling with her demons. granted, fassie isn’t a great painter either, but the flawed image of herself SHATTERS her. she can’t cope with it (u can find the clip with the painting here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wEWKPomFdQ ) she tries to act like she’s tooootally fine, but this is the big turn for her, the moment that her fantasy is ruined. instead of confronting this gap between the real and the imaginary, our girl simply chooses to immerse herself in the world of her romance novels and detach herself from the narrative (ha).
then, the First World War happens and instead of changing with the times and realizing that her flimsy content can no longer excuse a lack of depth, especially when society is changing so much and dealing with so many new problems - Angel simply withdraws into her self-maintained haven and rejects reality. reminds you of someone, doesn’t it?
the great thing about this movie is that we get to see the evolution of this character and we really get to know Angel’s insecurities and obsessions. so even tho she’s a raging narcissist, she becomes human and sympathetic to us. but t*aylor will never allow this kind of raw reveal unless it’s done by someone else (Angel, after all, doesn’t tell us her story, somebody does it for her). and it’s because, as you mentioned, she’s so completely enamored with a certain kind of narrative that centers her and makes her the strong, yet imperiled heroine, who must constantly battle a villain that actually poses no threat (her “haters”, the media, other girls, her exes).
it’s fascinating and frustrating too. like can u imagine this woman in her 40s? we might have another grey gardens on our hands.
anyway, sorry for the long post but i have been meaning to talk about this movie in relation to her and your comment gave me the starting point.

thank you!!!!! i 100% agree with everything you said! this tsw*ft thing has be driving me absolutely crazy ever since i found out about it, because everyone seems to be giving her a pass and making excuses for her. it’s so cathartic to talk to someone who can call out this bullshit for what it is. like as someone whose literal existence is being threatened right now by n*zis, i just have no patience for people like sw*ft who won’t even speak out against them. thank your for letting me vent ❤️
^^^^^
no problem hon, happy to be here
yeah it’s really dispiriting that ppl seem to excuse her behavior, claiming she’s innocent. she quickly becomes the fragile white girl who’s done nothing wrong. cuz that’s exactly who she aims to be for the public, no matter how “strong” she says she is. it’s always about how we’re attacking her, even though she’s done nothing to deserve it. by framing it like that, she gets away with doing “nothing” and she even romanticizes it: by doing nothing, she’s actually being “strong”, and standing up to her “bullies”. pffffff.
i was thinking how she’s basically this narcissist who can only manage political and cultural realities through a “t*swift” filter, as in she literally needs it to be all about her in order for her to actually get involved and give a damn. her engagement with feminism stops when it doesn’t benefit her. same with class, race etc. if she personally gains nothing out of it, she is dead silent. the fact that she deleted all her social media and now mainly posts about her self-contained “reputation” universe is super telling. she is literally cutting off social and cultural ties because that would mean being an actual artist of the world, and taylor is only an artist of the self.
and hey, that would be fine if that “self” had interiority. but what i’ve noticed is that, as much as her work is about herself, you don’t actually know much about her as an individual. we know about who she dated and that she owns cats i guess…and she sometimes hangs out on tumblr  to posture as a “regular gal”. the rest is tabloid gossip. her songs are cleverly devoid of an actual messy personality. the closest we got was “blank space” and i felt that she was moving in the right direction, but looking back on it now, maybe that song wasn’t as self-aware as i thought. because i suppose that, just like in “look what you made me do”, she was calling out the media instead of examining herself. so she’s actually constantly just singing about images and reflections of herself. never about her actual self.
and she seems legit happy with that, like that’s the most she’ll ever explore. she’s the classic bookcase narcissist who has confined herself to an echo chamber on her platform (don’t even get me started on that stupid expensive new app where she’s “streaming” herself) and she refuses to acknowledge anything that might threaten her ego or her image. she’ll keep liking posts on tumblr about how “pure” and “wonderful” and “slayyy” she is, while firmly ignoring any constructive criticism about her art, her politics and her influence.
yeah, she sux ass.
