Recently built by Gerrard Builders Hillside House and with interiors by Shannon Bowman Interiors and Carolina Design Associates, this cottage is truly a dream home! In my opinion, it is the perfect size and features interiors and an exterior that will overcome any trends. You can look at this home in ten years and you will think it was just designed.

Here, the interior designer Shannon Bowman, whom I am very thankful for for sharing all the sources below, explains more about the style of this home: “Cozy and Cottage Chic was our goal, however keeping a light and airy pallet almost gives it a coastal vibe. “The kitchen cabinets were built by Hardwood Creations in Charlotte, NC. They are paint grade flush inset frames with a recessed panel cabinet doors. The door style includes an interior bead for interest and detail. The smaller top drawers have an outer bead on a slab drawer front to keep the style consistent. We added a decorative and profiled light rail at the base of the upper cabinets to add one more layer of dimension and help hide the under-cabinet lights. The cabinet hood matches the profile of the cabinet doors in one large recessed panel and includes beaded/cove moldings below to create a low-profile mantel design. The cove corbels that attach the hood to the wall are 3” wide and line up with the overall frame of the hood above. The cabinet base includes a furniture style “proud” base with a decorative cove valance cut out.” – Shannon Bowman.

Ceiling Treatment

“The ceiling design creates two large diamonds set into a soffit with perpendicular beams meeting in each corner. We lined the entire ceiling in 6” ship-lap with a nickel gap. The craftsmanship was very important here, we wanted to line up the shiplap with the ceiling and the soffit so it created a seamless look. The beams are 4” high x 6” wide and include a small bead in the interior edges to connect the beam to the shiplap ceiling and create one more detail.”

Empty-Nester Modern Farmhouse

  If you love colorful interiors, this modern farmhouse cottage might not be your first choice, but if you are a big fan of organic, neutral and calming interiors with plenty of custom millwork (think shiplap!!!), this home should make your day!

With architecture and interiors by Edward Deegan Architects, this house is an empty-nester modern farmhouse/cottage with the master suite on the first floor. It was a custom-designed home for the current homeowners and it’s located in Lake Bluff, IL.

Bathtub Wall Gooseneck Faucet

If you happen to have been fortunate enough to find a true vintage or retro bathtub, then you will notice that there are probably three holes in the wall of the tub for the faucet. I recommend that you purchase our bathtub wall gooseneck faucet.

Most freestanding tubs that we or anyone else sells have the faucet holes on the rim or deck of the tub. That style of faucet is called a deckmount faucet.

But we have some new cast iron bathtubs that are truly styled after old fashioned vintage clawfoot tubs. Those tubs are cast with the faucet holes in the stub end, not the sloped end, of the tub.  The waste water drain hole, the overflow hole and the faucet holes are all located in the same general area. Faucets for this style of tub are Bathtub Wall Faucets.

English Telephone

In my featured photo, you will see the English Telephone or gooseneck style faucet with three white porcelain lever handles. Each handle is labeled for you with the function it performs. One turns the hot water on and off, one turns the cold water on and off and the middle one diverts the water from the faucet spigot to the hand held shower head. With this faucet it is not possible to have water flowing from the spigot and the hand held shower head at the same time.

Gallons Per Minute

The gooseneck faucet pours seven gallons of water per minute into your tub. It may not look as if that were the case, but it is. Just for information sake, the British Telephone faucet pours 10 gallons of water per minute. Both will fill your freestanding claswfoot tub very quickly.

It may be possible for you to switch out the white porcelain handles for metal lever handles or metal cross handles. You will just need to give The Tub Connection a call to ask them. Please note that I don’t recommend the cross handles for the gooseneck style, it seems to take away from the overall look of the faucet, but that is only my opinion.

Our bathtub wall gooseneck faucet has a 3 3/8″ to Center Faucet Spread. If you have an antique or true vintage tub be sure to measure the holes to see what size faucet your tub requires. It the holes are smaller or larger, give The Tub Connection staff a call, there are swingarms that may make our faucet for work you. Swingarms attach to the faucet and they swing out if the holes are wider than 3 3/8″ or they swing in for holes that are closer together.

Signs Of Quality

All of our faucets are made of Solid Brass Construction. If you have been looking at faucets that are not solid brass, STOP IT! If you have a beautiful tub spend a few extra dollars and get a quality faucet.

I’ll mention a few additional items that are the mark of true quality plumbing; our bathtub wall gooseneck faucet has Ceramic Cartridges, 1/4 Turn Valves, a 5 Year Warranty and is  available in Polished Chrome, Brushed Nickel & Oil Rubbed Bronze.

You could run down to your local hardware store but you will  not find quality faucets for tubs that require a bathtub wall gooseneck faucet. Check us out and if you have any questions, we are always so happy to talk about our faucets. We believe in our products and want you to as well.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: How to Build your own Home

  Beautiful Homes of Instagram is truly one of my favorite type of posts I publish on Home Bunch. It’s certainly not the easiest, but it’s a favorite and I hope it is for you too. I feel very proud to be featuring so many talented homeowners and be able to not only see their homes but especially know their story and the process of designing their space.

I am very happy to have Kristin of @kristin_kgdesigns on the blog today and I really think you will feel inspired by her beautiful home, especially if you dream of building your own home but feel intimated by this big task. Here, the homeowner shares more details and some encouragement:

  Hi everyone! Luciane asked me to write up my “story”… so it all began back in the late 1970’s when little Kristin came into the world… kidding. No one needs to hear that! Let’s talk about my house building story, shall we?

That story starts about 3.5 years ago. We were living in our dream house we had built ourselves and had worked so hard on. It was on 5 wooded acres and we loved it. Then my oldest started kindergarten. We loved our house and property but we were not in the best area and certainly not a good school district. I thought we could stick it out for another few years but after one day of volunteering in his class I came home and told my husband we had to move. He nearly killed me…but he eventually acquiesced and we decided to start looking in the “good” school district. Lucky for us one of the top districts in the state was only a 20 minute move.

We sold our dream house and started looking for a house in the area we wanted to be in. Turns out we totally couldn’t afford the area we wanted to be in. So that meant we’d have to build again to get the kind of house and property we wanted our kids to grow up in. We found a gorgeous 5 acre property that had a 1962 ranch house that had never been updated and had an unfinished basement. We bought that property and did a boundary line adjustment so that we had two separate properties. We lived in the ranch house while designing and permitting our new house on our own. We literally designed every inch of this new house ourselves. While doing this (and both working full time), we gutted and completely remodeled the ranch house.

Permitting took us 15 months to complete and we broke ground in August of 2017. We moved in 10 months later. We were the general contractor and my husband built most of the house while I was his laborer. We both worked full time during all of this so we would get home every night and walk out to the new house to work until bedtime. For over two years we said no to almost every social invitation we received. We worked on this labor of love every day. And we couldn’t be happier. We love this house and can’t wait to raise our kids here.

2019 Home Renovation Ideas

  This was a wonderful two-phase project that began when these clients decided they wanted to remodel their kitchen. This east-coast family had been living with builder-grade finishes that were dark and “Tuscan-Inspired” and were ready to have an updated kitchen that reflected their New Hampshire roots. Amy Tausk of Swoon Interiors and Stephanie Frees of Plain & Posh (previously featured here) worked together to design all new custom cabinetry that is more functional and beautiful.

  2019 Home Renovation Ideas

The kitchen felt dark and outdated before Amy and Stephanie worked their “magic” in this space!

Kitchen “After”

Kitchen Renovation: The designers revamped the kitchen into a clean, white and fresh space – but with a warm and cozy vibe like the rest of their house. Quartz countertops, clean-lined white cabinetry, a farmhouse sink, reclaimed wood and handcrafted subway tile laid in a herringbone pattern really transformed the space.

Shiplap: Reclaimed wood shiplap on the island really added warmth and the rustic vibe the designers were looking for.

The range is by Viking.

Cabinet Hardware is by Schaub and is the Menlo Park knob and pull.

Kitchen Island

Kitchen Island Design: Keeping the island a square size made the best spatial sense in this room – and lent itself to using one larger chandelier instead of two pendants. Amy decided to make that the main light feature in the room and just reconfigure the can lighting around the rest of the space.

The light fixture is by Currey & Company the Simpatico Small Orb Chandelier.

Breakfast Room

Their clients also wanted a cozy spot for their family to gather – in the mornings with coffee or for dinnertime conversation. The slip-covered chairs and weathered-wood table are now a favorite spot in the house. Even on a cloudy day, it feels bright and cheerful … truly the heart of the home for this wonderful family.

Bar

Previously the corner of the kitchen housed a tiny desk and became a catchall for a little bit of everything. They knew they could turn it into a much more usable and beautiful space. Now it is an entertaining-workhorse – with antique-mirrored upper cabinetry and a beverage refrigerator and wine rack below.

Home Remodel

Fast-forward a couple years and this family knew it was time to transform a few other rooms in their home into the fresh clean look we had given them in their kitchen. On the list, the Master Bathroom, Laundry Room and first floor Powder Room.

Powder Room

“Good things come in small packages! The jumping off point for this room was this fantastic watercolor-inspired wallpaper. We matched the color on the custom-built vanity and added shiplap to the back wall. A favorite library sconce, fun crystal knobs and this gorgeous wall-mount faucet are other details we love. Once again, we warmed up the space with a touch of natural wood, in the form of this wood-framed mirror that ties in with the existing wood floors. Finally, it’s hard to see in photos, but the quartz countertop has a lovely textured, “leathered” finish.”

Master Bathroom “Before”

“The builder of this home was obviously of a “More is More!” mindset … more arches, more walls, more steps – all if it making what is not a huge space to begin with feel even more cramped and choppy. While the colors were neutral, they still felt dark and dingy.”

Master Bathroom “After”

“We wanted to make the room feel light, bright and luxurious. Now, it is the exact same square footage as before but it feels huge!”

Ceiling

“Even with all of the lights off – it is so bright and cheery. And check out the ceiling! With all of the arches gone, Stephanie was able to see what it could become! She created this unique hexagon shape which inspired the rest of the room layout. The gorgeous wood bead chandelier looks stunning in the space.”

Flooring

“One of our preferences when doing bright white spaces is to bring in a warm element. We could have easily done a light floor – white or gray marble, and it would have been beautiful, but maybe a little cold – and certainly not as cozy feeling. Amy approached our client about doing a wood-look tile in a herringbone pattern for the floors – (especially since the adjoining bedroom is carpeted … we wouldn’t be competing with more wood), she wasn’t sure if she would be on board. Thankfully, she loved the idea of giving the room a slightly more rustic, farmhouse element.”

Vanity Layout

“What used to be one straight vanity and a big empty wall … … is now a beautifully designed double vanity that wraps the corner with mirrors and provides and extra spot with seating for putting on makeup.”

Make-up Drawer

The two small drawer fronts under the makeup area mirror are actually doors that swing open to hidden outlets. Genius!

“And … just the right quartz counter tops are still a win-win in our book, for both their beauty and durability. This one has such great movement and even some soft brown tones that tie in with the flooring.”

“Amy had been dying to find just the right project in which to use these vertical double light sconces, and I knew this was the one. As big as they are, they don’t take up much visual space when mounted to the mirror, yet they still make such a statement in the room.”

Faucet & Sink

Bathroom faucets are Rohl, Palladian collection.

Sinks are Kohler Caxton Rectangle (K-20000-0) in White.

Hardware is by Atlas – The Elizabeth pull in Polished Nickel Both 419 and 420PN.

Freestanding Tub

Tub is by Signature Hardware and is the Rosalind Pedestal tub.

Tub Filler: Rohl.

Tub Stool

Wooden Stool – Dip Dyed Stool from Serena & Lily.

Shower

The entrance to the shower is now on an angle.

Window

A  large window was added facing the tub to allow you to see through to the gorgeous mosaic tile on the back wall.

Shower Window

A high window was added inside of the shower to bring in light. The water closet (with cabinets for extra storage!) is located on the left.

Tiling

In addition to the sparkle the mosaics add, we dressed up a classic white subway tile with beautiful marble hex tile on the shower floor, gleaming polished nickel fixtures and a stunning lucite door handle.

All of the plumbing fixtures are from Rohl Palladian collection.

Accent Tile: Calacatta Gold Polished Interlocking Mosaic Accent Tile – similar here.

Laundry Room “Before”

Next – the laundry room. Like most builder-grade laundry rooms, this one was functional with no style. And … it was not even functioning to its full potential. The entire right wall was left blank … our clients put in their own table as a makeshift folding area.

Laundry Room “After”

“The cabinets were painted this lovely custom shade and given new doors and hardware. And in a room like a laundry room, why not go fun and bold with the flooring? We selected this tile that mimics the look of more expensive cement tiles.”

Tile is from Home Depot and is the Merola Tile and is the Arte Grey encaustic porcelain– similar here.

Sink Area

A new sink, countertop and faucet updated the old utility sink.

Color

The cabinetry is Plain & Posh collection. Stephanie, was extremely kind and called the cabinet maker to get the cabinet color just for you! The cabinet color is Slate Tile by Sherwin Williams SW 7624.

The faucet is the Litze pull out spray Square spout and industrial handle from Brizo in the brilliance stainless finish.

Laundry sink is from Sterling the Latitude 995-0.

Washer & Dryer: LG.

Cabinet Countertop & Hardware

“Of course, we had to add some warm wood tones too, which we did with a custom built wood countertop over the washer and dryer.”

The counter top on the washer and dryer are a wood top in a custom stain.

Hardware is by Atlas and is the Bradbury pull in their black finish.

Dream Laundry Room

“And on the other side of the room … brand new cabinetry was added, along with a true designated area for folding laundry and wall-mounted drying racks.”

Storage

“But that’s not all … previously this corner behind the door was just a place for piling up all of the tall household items that wouldn’t fit elsewhere. Now, this “bottom-less” cabinet is the perfect place to hold a clothes steamer or vacuum that you can simply roll right out and use when needed.”

Folding Area Countertop

The folding area counter top is Caeserstone Pebble (4030) in a honed finish.

Painted Brick Cottage

  Hello, my friends! How are you today? Many plans for the weekend? I certainly hope this brick cottage brings you some joy!

Recently built by Gerrard Builders Hillside House and with interiors by Shannon Bowman Interiors and Carolina Design Associates, this cottage is truly a dream home! In my opinion, it is the perfect size and features interiors and an exterior that will overcome any trends. You can look at this home in ten years and you will think it was just designed.

Here, the interior designer Shannon Bowman, whom I am very thankful for for sharing all the sources below, explains more about the style of this home: “Cozy and Cottage Chic was our goal, however keeping a light and airy pallet almost gives it a coastal vibe. We wanted to keep the charm of the original architecture and blend it with a newer farmhouse/cottage design.”

Gate and Grey Windows Paint Color: Sherwin Williams SW 7029 Agreeable Gray cut in 1⁄2 for less strength.

Exterior Brick Paint Color

You should pin or save this picture to keep the brick exterior paint color in mind! This color is perfect if you are looking for a warm white for your home. The brick and trim paint color is Sherwin Williams SW 7011 Natural Choice.

Kitchen

“The kitchen cabinets were built by Hardwood Creations in Charlotte, NC. They are paint grade flush inset frames with a recessed panel cabinet doors. The door style includes an interior bead for interest and detail. The smaller top drawers have an outer bead on a slab drawer front to keep the style consistent. We added a decorative and profiled light rail at the base of the upper cabinets to add one more layer of dimension and help hide the under-cabinet lights. The cabinet hood matches the profile of the cabinet doors in one large recessed panel and includes beaded/cove moldings below to create a low-profile mantel design. The cove corbels that attach the hood to the wall are 3” wide and line up with the overall frame of the hood above. The cabinet base includes a furniture style “proud” base with a decorative cove valance cut out.” – Shannon Bowman.

Countertop & Backsplash

The countertops are Calacatta Florence marble from In-Style. The perimeter countertops are 3cm thickness with an eased edge and the Island is a 2.5” thickness with a Dupont Laminated Edge. All marble tops included the Dupont 15 year sealer to help prevent staining. The backsplash is Roman White Rhombus marble mosaic in the Polished finish from In-Style.

Ceiling Treatment

“The ceiling design creates two large diamonds set into a soffit with perpendicular beams meeting in each corner. We lined the entire ceiling in 6” ship-lap with a nickel gap. The craftsmanship was very important here, we wanted to line up the shiplap with the ceiling and the soffit so it created a seamless look. The beams are 4” high x 6” wide and include a small bead in the interior edges to connect the beam to the shiplap ceiling and create one more detail.”

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: How to Build your own Home

  Beautiful Homes of Instagram is truly one of my favorite type of posts I publish on Home Bunch. It’s certainly not the easiest, but it’s a favorite and I hope it is for you too. I feel very proud to be featuring so many talented homeowners and be able to not only see their homes but especially know their story and the process of designing their space.

I am very happy to have Kristin of @kristin_kgdesigns on the blog today and I really think you will feel inspired by her beautiful home, especially if you dream of building your own home but feel intimated by this big task. Here, the homeowner shares more details and some encouragement:

  Hi everyone! Luciane asked me to write up my “story”… so it all began back in the late 1970’s when little Kristin came into the world… kidding. No one needs to hear that! Let’s talk about my house building story, shall we?

That story starts about 3.5 years ago. We were living in our dream house we had built ourselves and had worked so hard on. It was on 5 wooded acres and we loved it. Then my oldest started kindergarten. We loved our house and property but we were not in the best area and certainly not a good school district. I thought we could stick it out for another few years but after one day of volunteering in his class I came home and told my husband we had to move. He nearly killed me…but he eventually acquiesced and we decided to start looking in the “good” school district. Lucky for us one of the top districts in the state was only a 20 minute move.

We sold our dream house and started looking for a house in the area we wanted to be in. Turns out we totally couldn’t afford the area we wanted to be in. So that meant we’d have to build again to get the kind of house and property we wanted our kids to grow up in. We found a gorgeous 5 acre property that had a 1962 ranch house that had never been updated and had an unfinished basement. We bought that property and did a boundary line adjustment so that we had two separate properties. We lived in the ranch house while designing and permitting our new house on our own. We literally designed every inch of this new house ourselves. While doing this (and both working full time), we gutted and completely remodeled the ranch house.

Permitting took us 15 months to complete and we broke ground in August of 2017. We moved in 10 months later. We were the general contractor and my husband built most of the house while I was his laborer. We both worked full time during all of this so we would get home every night and walk out to the new house to work until bedtime. For over two years we said no to almost every social invitation we received. We worked on this labor of love every day. And we couldn’t be happier. We love this house and can’t wait to raise our kids here.

“I wanted to give you one of the best cost saving tips if you’re building or remodeling a kitchen. Our fridge looks and functions like an expensive unit but it’s really just two separate, simple units with a trim piece attached. Ours is by Frigidaire and we love it! Saved us a bunch of money but we still have the look and function of something much more expensive.”

Empty-Nester Modern Farmhouse

  If you love colorful interiors, this modern farmhouse cottage might not be your first choice, but if you are a big fan of organic, neutral and calming interiors with plenty of custom millwork (think shiplap!!!), this home should make your day!

With architecture and interiors by Edward Deegan Architects, this house is an empty-nester modern farmhouse/cottage with the master suite on the first floor. It was a custom-designed home for the current homeowners and it’s located in Lake Bluff, IL.

Counters are Calacatta Quartzite, Honed. “Calacatta Quartzite” is a natural stone from Brazil. This natural quartzite stone resemble the Italian Calacatta marbles in appearance, but they are more durable.

Neutral Home Interior Ideas

  Beautifully designed by two very talented interior designers, Mitzi Maynard and Clare Kennedy, this neutral home has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms (6 including pool house), and a total of 6,500 square feet.

The homeowners began building this neutral home in the fall of 2015, and it was completed in the Spring of 2017. This home combines a few different architectural styles. The exterior is a fresh take on a traditional home, which works well in their established neighborhood in Nashville. The interior of the home has a more Modern/Mediterranean style with a neutral color scheme that is easy on the eyes and soothing to the soul.

The homeowners are minimalists in style but are full of energy and playfulness.We had to strike a balance between comfort and livability for their family (pets included) while carefully curating a beautiful minimalist space.

Built-in Bench

The built in reading bench is their favorite place to read a book or take a nap in the sunshine. And, when they host large-scale events they simply clear out the chairs and the room transitions to a caterers dream.

The kitchen is defined by its clean lines, concrete countertops and hand forged hardware.  The rattan stools and vintage Oushak rug add texture and age to the space.

The European hardware added architecture and substance to the modern custom cabinetry. The paint color is Benjamin Moore White Dove.

Our client really pushed for the single-pendant over their custom concrete island. She wanted something minimalist, large scale, that added a modern glam element to the room.

Countertop is concrete. Concrete was also used on the both sides of the kitchen island.

The dining room carries the same clean-lined feel. Metal and leather dining chairs complement a black dining table with chunky legs.

At the center of the home is the warm and inviting living space. With its relaxed West- Coast style, it captures the feeling of true indoor/outdoor living. The towering steel doors give the perfect view to the pristinely landscaped backyard and pool.

Color Scheme

Neutral Color Scheme: We were trying to leave the colorful palette of their previous home behind us. They were ready to go neutral so we used natural elements, texture, and mixed metals to bring lay- ers and warmth to the space.

While antiquing in Michigan we found an African Carved Wood Senofu stool that is one of the homeowners favorite pieces in their living room.

Fireplace

The modern concrete fireplace wall is the centerpiece of the room and features custom designed wood push-paneled doors (that cleverly hide clutter).

Great Finds: The homeowner found some gorgeous arched vintage doors from an antique dealer in England, and she knew she had to have them. The doors are now one of the defining architectural elements in the house.

Empty-Nester New-construction Home

  Recently designed by Elise McDonough of Interiors by Elise, this new construction model home was designed for a newly or nearly empty nester buyer. At 2528 square feet the floor plan is a single level home located near a large golf course community targeting a retirement demographic looking to down-size, but still requiring modern, high-end finishes.
