maybe we'd live in a different world if someone had sat the creative team of this is us down, held their hands and say. hey. hey. you know you don't have to write kevin and sophie together if you don't want to, right?

Kevin/Sophie from TIU bc I also want you to cause problems, LOL
It’s the worst written romance on the show, bar none.
It’s not just that I don’t like it, that I find it boring, or that I hate what her character (which I find poorly constructed and lacking tbh) does to Kevin’s storyline. All of that are byproducts of the real problem for me: it feels completely detached from the rest of the show.
And they tried, my GOD they tried. They made her a high school sweetheart, they told us she was Kate’s best friend, they married them, they added her mother as a Kevin cheerleader... but it doesn’t CLICK with the rest. Because I don’t think there’s real enthusiasm as opposed to trying to do something that they think SHOULD thematically work with the show but just... doesn’t.
Olivia took Kevin’s characters to interesting places, and the writers immediately wanted to write her with tension with Kate, gave her an emotional scene with Will... And those all happend ORGANICALLY, while the rest were more forced but at least worked a little better (Zoe was related to Beth, even Cassidy had a connection to Nick). With Madison, you ACTUALLY see her relationships with Kate and Toby, and they clearly enjoyed writing scenes with her and Randall & Beth, with Rebecca... but there’s nothing like that with Sophie in the present day, and all the flashbacks with her feel EMPTY, like she’s an add-on instead of immersed into the family’s story.
It’s not that it sticks out. Kevin/Olivia stuck out and I consider it a GOOD thing; eye-catching, surprising, IN YO FACE. It’s that it ~drifts in the show and feels unmoored within it, iykwim. It’s the romance that SHOULD work but something is missing. And if the writers keep trying to go for it because they think it’s what the story Should Be About they’re going to shoot themselves in the foot.
Send me a ship and I’ll give you my (brutally) honest opinion on it
