The Extremely Petty Reason I Hate Sebastian

Please do not take this seriously. I'm not main-tagging this because I do not wanna die, and may delete this if people go insane, but I've been wanting to make a post about it for awhile and this blog is for talking about by feelings on my favorite game so here goes

It is SOLELY because of how he talks to Fenris

This is the one that really did it for me, mostly because I misinterpreted it as being directed towards the sexual abuse Fenris faced at the hands of Danarius and it disgusted me so much I had to close the game

I understand now that's probably not what Sebastian was talking about but it was too late. Even knowing he isn't referring to that this is such an over the line thing to say that I can't forgive it

Every interaction with Fenris that he has reads like a Evangelical missionary trying to convert someone in a vulnerable state to their cult faith and it's fucking gross. It's actually nauseating

Now, I actually think Fenris having faith is interesting. I was raised atheist myself, I can't understand faith like someone who was raised religious does. But I do understand having a complex relationship with the concept of faith, especially the idea of faith feeling appealing, but finding the people and ideas behind faith hostile to who you are. That's the kind of relationship with faith I like to imagine Fenris has

But god I cannot stand the way Sebastian talks to him. I can't not find it predatory, and it makes Sebastian come off as so insidious that he is the only Dragon Age character I actively hate. Usually with characters I don't like I just ignore them, but Sebastian I hate. Sebastian makes me physically angry

I say it's petty because it really is JUST this. Just how he talks to Fenris, and since Fenris is my Prime Blorbo I'm soooooooo biased it's ridiculous. Also because Anders is terrible to Fenris but I can forgive that, probably because Fenris is equally as terrible back.

Sebastian acts creepy towards my fav and the game never seems to acknowledge how creepy he's being and for that I cannot stand the sight of Sebastian. I am so sorry. I know plenty of people like Sebastian and you have my utmost respect but to me the man's vibes are so rancid I may start gagging

Can it be settled once and for all about whether or not Sebastian Stan is a Trump supporter? I’m going to say he probably isn’t. He’s pro woman and I’d be surprised if being an immigrant, he’d agree with anti immigrant sentiment. He’s also pro lgbt. And I would imagine he’d be horrified by the sexual assault, the political violence (Seb and I are both Romanians. We can tell you how fucked up Romania was) and similar issues.

I just keep seeing so many posts about whether he is or not and arguing, I just want all of us to finally get to as close to a likely answer as possible so we can stop the arguing. Of course, none of us know him and he secretly could be a Trump supporter. None of us will ever know hence why I’m saying let’s find a likely answer. (Which is probably no.)

How would semi have gotten the info on Siberia & the starks mission? How would Bucky, Sam, & Steve all gotten out of the UN facility they were being held in?

Let’s put it this way…if you can have a plot device where the Russian code words to mind control an unstable American super soldier can be found in an unsecured book carried by a single nameless Hydra agent, and where Starks’ hi-res murder video is conveniently still stored (and working and crystal clear) 25 years after their deaths in the depths of Siberia, you can have a plot device where Starks’ video is found by any other means, really.

Let’s have the ghost do the entire murder in full view of the camera!

So let’s talk about why the code words exist from a plot point of view, and why this movie was IM 4 and not Cap 3 *cracks knuckles*

1) The code words sets up the fight between Bucky and multiple Avengers, to justify the Avengers needing to arrest him.

The entire sequence is to highlight Bucky as unstable and uncontrollable while being highly vulnerable to external influence.

We were introduced to Bucky being soft-spoken and doing something banal. The audience at this point is sympathetic towards him (and Steve). Seriously, look at this cinnamon roll.

In order then for the audience to be tipped towards Tony’s side, we are then thrown this.

Clearly a dangerous brute who needs to be kept under surveillance, if not under lock and key. No one can reason with him - Steve, the only one who could in CATWS, is shown to be the first to fail (*) - this is NOT a coincidence on the part of the scriptwriter (say what you will about their intentions but M&M is much smoother at this than MS). This highlights exactly how volatile and aggressive Bucky is, even if he wasn’t responsible for T'Chaka’s death, and it provides support for Tony wanting to arrest him ASAP.

* In the interest of fairness I thought I’d add that the first person to go down during the fight was Sam, but he was surprised by Bucky and didn’t get a chance to try and stop him at all.

2) The code words sets up Bucky as the one with details of Starks’ deaths, which strengthens the impression of his culpability.

Okay, medical meta time. If we only use Bucky’s brainwashing methods in CATWS - regardless of its exact modality (ECT or DCS or TES or actual electrocution) - and if we are to take the Wakandan files as fact that Bucky’s brain has severe hippocampal sclerosis, then the idea of him actually remembering anything from his missions 25 years ago is absolute deus ex machina bollocks.

The hippocampus is the area where memory is formed and consolidated, not where it is stored. Also, any sort of physical brain trauma to induce memory loss will almost always affect the most recent memories first. What this practically means is Bucky is less likely to retain any memories of his missions than his long-term memories of Steve.

Even without that medical background, the fact that Pierce said “Wipe him and start over” in CATWS suggests that whatever pseudoscience method MCU made up was supposed to wipe all his pre-existing memories. If the memory is wiped before the brain has stored the memory, that memory is gone forever and there is no possible way of retrieving it. (Whereas him recalling Steve despite the hippocampal damage makes sense because that long term memory is stored elsewhere)

The intention here is entirely to make the audience sympathetic to Tony by retconning Bucky’s brainwashing method to suggest he remembers his missions and victims (but told no one about it), and by association, Steve is equally at blame for not telling Tony.

3) It provides a rationale for them to shelf Bucky at the end of Cap 3 in an open-ended way.

In CATWS, the technician said, “He’s been out of cryo for too long” which suggests that the effects of the ECT (or whatever) only lasts for so long, and 2 years should have been long enough for Bucky to be free of its effects. Adding the code words, however, means that anyone who speaks 10 words of the correct Russian can take control of Bucky. It provides a justification for Bucky to go under cryo and remove himself from the rest of the franchise, especially any forthcoming Avengers movies, because it would otherwise not make sense for Steve to ignore that thread of his story. And also cos MCU thinks actually allowing their traumatised characters to heal on screen is wussy.

So unfortunately the question of “how would not having the code words change the plot” is built on the assumption that the rest of the plot isn’t already built on plot device matchsticks with a heavy dollop of bias towards Tony. So yanno, you really could substitute it with anything you like because it would be just as believable.

i got into the 800s in the anime and stopped watching, took a break and then read the manga up to around 1060. but last month i decided to read the whole thing from the beginning and it is genuinely SO WORTH IT.

after u have caught up completely its super rewarding to go back and look at previous chapters bc its constant "oh my god look what was foreshadowed here??" and "now i understand the context behind this!!!" and "this interaction is so much more meaningful now that i know their relationship!!". yes it did take me a whole month of nearly nonstop reading to catch back up but i have 0 regrets.

wano and the arc after it are both super fun and interesting and i think ur gonna love it. the lore is crazy. i hope u dont see any spoilers bc going into it completely blind will probably be way more exciting, especially with the most recent arc since its kinda suspenseful and mysterious,,.

I used to be the person who said I would never watch one piece 😭😭 I've been into anime since I was like 12 and I'm almost 24 now (fuck . That's like half my life) and obviously it's always been on my radar but I always thought it was 1. Too popular 2. Too Long 3. Hated how oda draws women lmao so I was fine ignoring it and only knowing the basics from just Being On The Internet

I think sometime early on I caved and attempted to watch it- I got to alabasta and stopped bc the anime pacing wasn't doing it for me (though I liked it up until then, but didn't LOVE it)

cut to high-school where a couple of my good friends liked it but we never really talked about it, it was a lifelong interest for one of them bc he'd started reading it on like 4th grade

Well I'm still friends with them (shoutout to sam and seb) and they convinced me to watch one piece film red with them in like July or August of last year bc they were showing me the songs and I, ado fan bc I'm a retired weaboo and a vocaloid Stan, was like "haha that sounds like ado" and they went "IT IS!!!!??" so I had to watch it for her.

again, I was like oh this is fun I like this :^) but no IMMEDIATE interest, more of a passive thing... until the live action came out a month or so later and I watched it just because and DAMN I FELL IN LOVE FAST

i’ve always had a soft spot for bucky barnes since i started watching marvel. not even like because i love sebastian stan, but i just love bucky’s arc. i love the idea of someone being trapped in their own mind and not even fully being aware of the terrible things they’ve done but also knowing that is 100% not who they are. seb also just happens to play bucky perfectly- i honestly could not imagine anyone else.

in my stranger things brain though- and we are a safe space here- i love billy. for similar reasons, though i don’t really relate to him, i find his constant anger and resentment so intriguing. dacre montgomery also just does a fantastic job playing him! i wish we got to know him a little bit more, i feel like we were left in the dark about a lot of his life.
