A little bit of explanation for my Netflix salt today
I saw the briefest piece of that teaser trailer where Nivellen is like "yeah but she will suffer and they are gonna was her of her emotions did you tell her that"
And it makes me fear that they might try and give Calanthe's role in the development of Geralt as a character over to him because it made me think about this quote:
‘And I’ve come to the conclusion that the selection of the children at the stage of the Choice has scant significance. What difference does it make, in the end, Geralt, which child dies or goes insane, stuffed full of narcotics? What difference does it make whose brain bursts from hallucinations, whose eyes rupture and gush forth, instead of becoming cats’ eyes? What difference does it make whether the child destiny chose or an utterly chance one dies in its own blood and puke? Answer me.'
And I think it would bring a similar reaction out of Geralt and similar thoughts to him.
Like. It wouldn't surprise me if they took that role from the strong and wise female figure and instead gave it to a literal r*pist who was cursed because he forced himself on a priestess.
They already ruined her beyond recognition and there is no going back from that so they may as well strip her of any significance left.
I mean she really lost ANY actual depth she had and any weight her character carried because it was so important how loving she was and how good she was and how BELOVED she was. And she was all that DESPITE being a woman. She had to fight like hell to rule in her own right and when she did she kicked ass at it. She was the best ruler in the North and the best ruler in Cintra's history, and all of this is gone. She's a tyrant and a racist and has a hand in the genocide of elves and her people starve and hate her so like.
What more can you do to ruin her character at this point?

Even tho i'm not slavic myself, coming from an easteen country, surrounded by slavs, our culture was influenced by them to some exten and i deeply in love with slavic culture and in eastern cultures in general and it made me -as a non-slavic eastern- start to look into my own culture as well trying to find just as cool stories, as i heard from my neigbhours. And of course when i found them i was facinated how we can have such amazing culture despite having this mindset now, that everything that's "interesting" and "cool" can only come from the west. Finally i realized my own culutre matter just as much as the western ones, and it needs to be nurtured and cared for, because it's a part of me, part of where i came from, and that i can be proud of who i am. Finally i didn't felt excluded from the mysts, from cultural appreciation thanks to Wiedźmin. And seeing that the west tries to -and already did kinda- take away this from Polska....it's just infuriate me. It's like saying: "Hey so we can do watherver we want, take your culture and change it for our liking so no one will know this is yours" It's just makes my list longer why i don't like the west and why i would never want to be a part of it really. They don't unite cultures, they take aspects from them and personalize it for their liking.
Aside from the other Bad Things twn has committed, what probably pisses me off the most is the fact that it’s a Polish series produced by a bunch of Brits and Americans. Mainly because Polish(and other slavs, eastern europeans) face xenophobia from white Brits to this day, hell, there are cases from like two-three years ago when brits beat up a couple of Polish folks and Czechs. It adds another layer to the erasure of historical and cultural significance from the story, because we have these hooty-tooty Brits with their colonizer genes wagging their fingers at the Polish that their culture is irrelevant.

In the season two of the netflix Witcher they made Yennefer to sacrfice Ciri to the something called Deathless mother so she can get her magic back, if you trough that S1 wasn't shity enough wait to see a S2 whole new way of shittines. So far the only good thing about S2 are the costumes and the scenery
oh i know what they did in season 2.
i haven't watched it, but i know just about everything.
and i know it sucks
i really hope season 3 will be the last

different anon than before. Sorry to touch upon that subject again, but this analogy from before with elves and Jews doesn't really work. You have three parties - party A (Nilfgaard/Nazi Germany), party B (Cintra & other countries of north/Poland) and party C (elves/Jews). If party C is oppressed by both party A and party B, but it temporarily teams up with party A to defeat party B and be granted their land (the supposed plot development of the series), the analogy with WWII would imply that Jews voluntarily collaborated with Nazi Germany with the aim of overtaking Poland, which is 1) not what happened, 2) a really antisemitic statement. So I guess that's why previous anon(s?) were asking so many questions. Speaking as a follower of your blog, you don't seem to be a prejudiced person, so I'm giving you the benefit of doubt, but yeah, this analogy was quite icky. - 🍀
But in the books Party C is not opressed by party B.
In the books the elves are not oppressed by Cintra. More - Cintra is one of the only northern countries where elves and dwarves lived in peace with the humans. Calanthe supported elder races.
That's the point. This shouldn't be like that. And this is what the show made it. That's why it's so outrageous. Because the Jews did NOT team up with Nazi Germany to get Poland and this is what the show tries to insinuate with that plot they came up with.
Hope that clears things up now?

Hitler hated the Jews. emhyr didn't hate the Elves (pureblood nilfgaardian were proud of being rooted in Elves). This parallel is silly and unreasonable.
Emhyr is based on many historical dictators, Hitler primarily, just like Vilgefortz is based on Mengele and the Empire as a whole has many elements from both the Roman Empire and Nazi Germany.
The pallel is not perfectly there, because as you said, the elves were not the target of Emhyr's genocide, which would make them Jews. He only lied to them.
But the notion of Hitler giving Poland away to any marginalised minority is silly, and that was the point of my boyfriend's joke. He only said the Jews because they fit the rest of the parallel, not because they fit the Elves per se.
Can't believe i have to explain it like a silly joke.

partially im not even fucking surprised. like, yes, demonizing a powerful woman for the sake of making a canonically awful fictional hitler appear like a good man sounds like something netflix would do.

1/ 2 It is important for me to know your opinion. I was faced with a dilemma: on the one hand, the importance of representation and the ability for POC to be characters of European folklore, and on the other hand, why talking about a folklore characters for POC, it’s immediately starts to argue about their authenticity in European folklore, denying the existence of others folklores.
2/2 My question is not «Сan elf be POC», but "Why, speaking of POC, it’s still impose European folklore on them as a base one"?
to be perfectly honest with you, anon, i am also torn on that. i understand the importance of representation, but it's really hard to weigh it against historical or cultural accuracy. personally, i don't mind it. i don't mind women of color playing yennefer, triss and francesca. but then netflix turns around and whitewashes both triss and francesca at the end of the day and that's where i have issues.
poland's history is a little... difficult, when it comes to black history, because we don't always see the importance of some things and how some things are found really offensive outside of poland. let me give you an example - we had a show for a long time, where actors and celebrities would try to mimic a known singer's voice, wear their makeup and try to impersonate them on stage, and they'd be judged on their performance. and nobody batted an eyelid, when katarzyna skrzynecka, a white woman, was playing louis armstrong;
Tumblr media
anywhere outside of poland, that would be unthinkable. but we have a really hard time understanding that, because poland was not a thing during the colonial era, we have no connection to it at all. i saw nothing wrong with it when the show was airing, at the time, i was probably 15-16? and it took me a long time to come to a realisation how wrong it was.
bottom line is, i personally see nothing wrong with poc representation being present in shows based on european culture, as long as that european culture is still respected and presented in other ways. i don't think people of color should be excluded from european culture.

What did your boyf mean by giving Poland to the Jewish people? - ✨
He means that Cintra, in the original book, is the parallel of Poland and that Emhyr is the parallel of Hitler.
So if Emhyr gives Cintra to the elves, it's as if Hitler gave Poland to Jews.
