Driving the Golden Spike

I’ve been deeply thinking about the anthropecence and the culture/visuality surrounding it. while there is a call to decolonize ecology there is a really antiseptic quality to work about it. It is science heavy which is interesting but that is advantaged over a more ethos based approach which is in turn privileged in most poc/indigenous circles. i work through the medium of technology so i’m struggling to express an incorporeal approach of ecology. Tech and nature seem separate from themselves. And as bodies move further from nature and closer to technology how can I bridge the gap? and bring a softness and deep intuition to human interaction with both? how can this change the way life is viewed?

III Planetary Boundaries
Tumblr media
The article, written by Johan Rockstrom, talks about the need to start realizing the different planetary boundaries. It stressed on how this identification can help in making environmental changes and preventing catastrophes. While the earth was immersed in the Holocene state which signified environmental well-being and sustainbility for the past 1000 years, it is important to see that things are starting to change because of activities of humankind. The consequences of the aforementioned activities has lead to a new epoch namely the anthropece. The author says that setting up and establishing planetary boundaries can prevent the ongoing negative impacts that humans inflict upon their surroundings.   The goal is to not intervene too much in the environmental processes and make sure human acitivites happen in safe and contained spaces. According to studies, three of the earth-system processes have already crossed the boundaries (climate change, rate of biodiversity loss and interference with the nitrogen cycle) This is highly threatening and if continued, will erode the capacity of the earth-system processes to smoothly function. The author stresses on the point that we must recognize the need to acknowledge all the boundaries and not neglect some while focusing on another; this is highly ineffective and puts the processes in danger.
The author says that this is an attempt to quantify the safe limits and this attempt depends on three aspects of scientific enquiry: the extent of human action and its relation with the ability of the planet to sustain it, working on gaining knowledge on essential earth processes, and enquiry into enviromental resilience and self regulation of living systems that concentrates on preserving these thresholds.
The article was complex and filled with innumerable statistics and science that my fragile humanities-oriented brain could not begin to comprehend. It was a great plunge into a whole new field that I knew nothing about. The statistics were interesting and the proposals suggested by the author was thought-provoking. Though it was well-researched and eloquently put, I thought the goals were utopian and highly ideal. At the rate at which humankind is going, positive changes seem far away and the idea of the society working collectively to remedy the damage seem almost impossible.

Sketch I used to practice muscles and pecs, still need to practice. I might start over one day free hand. Pike is instructing a class and teaching other Orcas how to properly save, protect and devour humans. You can see some of his pupils are smitten with the idea…or his body…or both.
