Signal Boost Please! Call for Submissions

Hello everyone! My name is Cassandra Jules Corrigan and I'm an author of queer-friendly kids books. You can check my creds here.

My editor Alex and I have pitched a kids' anthology of queer folklore and mythology where we're hoping to gather submissions from 10-15 different contributors of different cultural backgrounds telling a queer story from their culture's folklore or mythology. Talks have been going well, but the publisher, Jessica Kingsley Publishers (an imprint of Hachette), would like to see more submissions to get a better feel for what the final product would look like before green-lighting.

Submissions should be around 100-200 words, focused on one story, and be written in a style appropriate for late elementary/early middle school. If you would like to include sources for the story, you can put them at the end in a bibliography, Chicago/Turabian style is preferred.

We especially would like submissions from POC, but white authors are also welcome to submit.

If you would like to write something for us, you can use this form to submit. Please keep in mind that submitting does not guarantee that you will be included in the final anthology, but we will reach out to you via e-mail if we want to use your writing.

If you aren't a writer or this isn't your thing, I would still really appreciate a reblog to spread the word!

When Lance’s previously obsolete skills in language suddenly become very useful, he finds himself wondering why aliens can’t account for the fact that humans, particularly him, need sleep and would prefer linear timelines. (Or: an Arrival AU because I love that movie)

yall OBSESSED does not begin to cover it. i have never read a fic where lance was so goddamn cool. and in like. the insanest of ways?? like of course lance is a polyglot but THIS....this is a whole new level. i havent even finished it fully yet but like god this thing is so fucking cool. if ur looking for a longfic stop looking

Lance wasn't like the rest of the world. And he had never had a loving mother tell him it made him stronger for it. So he told himself, gathering up his courage and grit to face a world of winged humanity, when he, in fact, has no wings and turns into a mermaid instead. A world that wants him to die. So he'd keep this secret like a knife in his boot, a sharp weapon until he died on his own terms. Not because of who he was. Except, Team Voltron isn't so sure why Lance is all rough edges and sharp points about showing off his wings. Or acting like a member of the Flock in general. It's clear he cares for them, but he's never shown an intimate part of him. Until he has to.

oh god this has gotta be one of my CLASSIC fics. read it a few dozen times. i read it right when it came out, six ish years ago (goddamn), i can remember curling up in my old bunk bad and eating this up as the hours ticked by. i was HOOKED. my jaw was dropped my eyes were glued. could not get enough. if youre looking for mermaid lance with a twist....brother this is it

3. Looking for Rain by @thewriter2

Like most things, it starts with the little things: his smile, his confidence, his talent. Eventually, all these little things add up to one big thing that threatens to crash over them like a heavy rain. But, maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing. Maybe something beautiful would come from it. A 5+1 (really a 10+1) of Lance and Keith falling in love.

UM??? EXCUSE ME???? SIMILE OF ALL TIME ACTUALLY???? keith being so so visibly obviously in love with lance is my actual roman empire shit never leaves my mind

When they entered the Blue Lion, Keith was Lance’s rival--the person Lance was working so hard to surpass. But slowly, Lance found himself thinking of Keith less as a rival and more as something close to a friend. So of course, Lance’s traitor of a heart decided that it would be Lance’s kind of friend that it would fall in love with.

tags to sell you: "keith is a dork but lance loves him anyway" (dorky keith my beloved), "hunk is an a+ friend" (yes he is), "lance is a lovesick fool" (yeah), and "allura is older sister goals" yes yes YES you get it. and like....while keith pov is my favourite to write by far, lances pov as he realises he is in love....that will always hold such a special special place in my heart

In the middle of the conversation, Lance stops talking and no one notices. It’s not like he had been leading the conversation, for he hadn’t been, but somehow the fact that his lack of input or opinion isn’t noticed tightens the grip loneliness has on his heart. He looks down at his food, his face burning, his throat tightening up.

now usually anything but team as family isnt my deal. im not big on classic langst. but keith as a knight in shining armour.....what can i say i am weak willed. deeply. also " It’s what made it worse. I miss home and I miss being held and the rain, and I loved you. I thought you hated me." got me so bad got me WEAK like i have never recovered from that line and i doubt i ever will

Open question to everyone as I continue to wrestle with being a professional starving creative. I’ve been nudged towards making a Substack a couple times now. I’m hesitant on making a new page for anything due to how little the Official Author Website seems to have mattered in the grand scheme of my teeny scribbling career, but there are a couple pros to consider. The most basic plus is that it could make for a tidier spot to leave my Big Scribbles than just piling them in a scattered Tumblr. But the key part the online 'get passive income!1!!' gurus point out about Substack is the sub(scription) bit. And how it can be a charged subscription.

With at least $5 charged per month. For weekly-to-monthly updates. From me.

That means scheduled writing that's worthy of wringing more money out of the ‘Everyone is Broke’ website at least once a month. Note, I would not be pulling a Watcher; I’d still be dropping previews for my big WIPs here per usual. But a $ubstack would come with that and other original works each month. Supposing there was more than 2.5 folks out there willing to burn their bucks on that endeavor.

Other Worlds: An Anthology of Diverse Short Fiction

Short stories by writers from marginalised and/or underrepresented communities or backgrounds exploring the theme of "Other Worlds"

KICKSTARTER NOW LIVE and SUBMISSIONS OPEN!

Other Worlds is the second print anthology brought to you by A Coup of Owls Press - home of online quarterly anthologies from creators from marginalised and/or underrepresented communities or backgrounds.

As a follow-up to Other & Different, which explored what it is to be othered, Other Worlds will be an exploration of places, situations, communities, etc, that are other. These might be actual other worlds in a science or speculative fiction genre, or a community, or a situation in the historical or modern world that feels or is made to feel alien. Encompassing a variety of styles and genres, Other Worlds will feature stories focused on the theme of being part of those othered communities - however the writers wish to interpret that.

THE STORIES

We are thrilled to confirm that we have invited five fantastic authors to contribute to Other Worlds, and our submissions for the remaining stories are open from 1st October to 15th November 2023.

Victor Okechukwu is a writer based in Lagos, Nigeria. His writing takes a deep setting in arresting issues of mental health that have been overlooked in his country. He's an Associate Prose Editor at Zerotic Press and is reading mass communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Von Reyes: Violence and intimacy become blurred and life might just be worth fighting for amongst a community of underground fighters (Speculative Fiction).

Von Reyes is an emergent fiction author, focused on uplifting the intersections of queer and trans masculinity and Asian diasporic identity. He focuses on genre fiction with themes of surrealism, queer sexuality, existentialism, and optimistic nihilism. He is passionate about creating a more socially conscious world where care for each other is at the core of all that we do. He hopes to tell stories that don't shy away from the horrors, but allows us to find the light within them. Zachary Rosenberg is a horror writer living in Florida. He crafts horrifying tales by night and by day he practices law, which is even more frightening. It’s time for the last time! The final issue of this project, WEREWOLVES VERSUS: EVERYTHING, is officially accepting submissions.

What is “everything”? Well, anything. The theme is intentionally broad to encourage an "anything goes" vibe, but if you'd like a reference point, the cover art will look like if the Doom 2016 OST was a painting about werewolves. If it didn’t collide with an existing project, the theme would have been “The Apocalypse”. The goal is high-energy chaos, catharsis, horror, giddy surreality, fangs and claws bared, apocalyptic conflicts, blood and paint in fur.

Yuriran!: nothing major, but it's really pushing the 'butch4butch' premise. the butchest girl twitter can handle before they get scared etc etc.

We're Just Close, Is All: nothing major.

Moon in the Water: mention of suicidality + very mild sexual reference.

Portrayal: some sexual reference.

La Coneja Blanca Y Su Santa Maria: nothing explicit, but implied sex where the consent feels mildly dubious.

Seafoam: terminal illness, discussion of cannibalism, death.

All-Inclusive Feelings: not super explicit but heavy sexual reference + some sexual content. there is a brief implication-slash-mention of csa/incest (it is a miscommunication joke - nothing actually happened). and like. there's no good way to say it but it just gives me a Weird Vibe. i can't fully place it but it just raises some invisible red flag for me. the way the author depicts brown women felt... kind of fetishistic to me? additional pieces on the artist's twitter gave me the same vibe. i'm white, so feel free to ignore my take on this, but recommending the anthology without giving a clear warning about this gave me a bad taste in my mouth.
