It all started simply because there were no waffles. It was Sunday... There should've been waffles. Toon Vee was whimpering like a sad dog, sitting in the doorway of the kitchen.

Shanon hasn't given her permission to enter yet.

Modern Shelly, who had woken up not too long ago, had realized that fact just as the really sad toon loafed in the doorway. Another whimper. That girl was desperate for something in there... But what? Where even was Shanon? Why wasn't the usual smell of waffles filling the air?

"Here... Vee... I'll go in with you..." Modern Shelly softly stated as she carefully walked around the robot, who immediately bolted in when given permission. The poor fossil watched as the tiny robot opened the fridge, climbed into the bottom, then shut herself in.

"What?"

Modern Shelly did not mean to ask that out loud, but she genuinely was concerned why a robot just put herself in the fridge. She didn't get an answer, so she just started making her usual coffee, concerned about everything this morning. Her partner soon was too, until the other Vee walked in and opened the fridge to grab the oat milk, she looked at the other in the fridge before giggling.

"Well hello there, fridge goblin."

"I just like it in here because it's cold and dark and I can nap without anyone noticing." Toon Vee casually explained, getting a nod of understanding from her modern counterpart before she closed the fridge.

"That is so smart, kid. Too bad I can't fit." The other robot simply stated, making the now somewhat awake fossil facepalm.

"Oh my god... You two have the worst ideas..."

"You love our horrible ideas, don't act like you don't." Modern Vee stated as she put the milk of oat beside her coffee cup, getting a tired giggle from the fossil.

"Mhm, I loved being married in the grocery store's oat milk aisle, I loved being proposed to with a cereal bowl, oh and don't forget how lovely it was to watch you two wreck my alternate universe's mom's kitchen with neon blue pancake batter- oh and the magical blue milk full of cotton candy and happiness. Yeah I love everything you do, totally." Modern Shelly teased, then she paused.

"She's supposed to be making waffles... It's Sunday..." She stated, making her partner look at her in confusion, then understanding, then confusion again.

"She does it here too?"

"She started because it makes your Shelly so happy she cries." A muffled reply from the fridge was heard.

"Gotcha." The modern robot replied, as if it wasn't weird talking to a fridge. Toon Shelly soon joined them in the kitchen, in her red raptor pj's and armed with a sleepy face that could melt anyone's cold and dead soul and a plush raptor that matched her pajamas in her arms, looking confused and as sleepy as ever. Adorable. The Moderns barely held back their awes... She looked like a toddler looking for her mom, even if she's more of the height of a middle schooler than an actual toddler- tall enough to be independent yet small enough to be held. Adorable. The perfect height for a toon.

"Hey... Where's momma..?" The very sleepy toon asked, her voice soft and gentle. An aww came out of Modern Vee... She was so cute.

"That's what we were trying to figure out, sleepyhead. Did you want to help us look for her?" Modern Shelly softly asked, talking to her just as softly as the other spoke. Another awww was awed. Why were these fossils so damn adorable?

"Mhm... I want mommy..." Toon Shelly replied sleepily, then yawned as she rubbed an eye. Modern Vee would've died from cute if she could. She really was like a toddler... Fortunately, no deaths occurred that day. Somehow. How neither of them died from the puppy eyed, sleepy lil baby act that have made even grown men aww and die from cuteness is unknown. Modern Shelly instead just offered her hand to the very drowsy dinosaur child, and once she took it, the two were off to Shanon's room. As always, the door was open, and the two just quietly walked inside. Shanon was still asleep in bed, curled up and cozy, face buried in a mix of her own Shelly stuffie and her own hair, snoring quietly. Toon Shelly let go of her Modern counterpart and walked right over, gently grabbing Shanon's side and shaking her, getting tired grumbles in reply. The toon just shook her again, and Shanon woke up that time, sitting up not long afterwards and moving her hair away from her face. She was pale, shaky and a little sweaty, her cheeks flushed and her eyes hazy. She just stretched before patting her little toon on the head, then yawned.

"I'm up darling, I'm awake." She mumbled in a raspy voice, making the two fossils wince in sympathy pain.

"Momma are you okay..?" Toon Shelly softly asked, and Shanon just nodded, but didn't even budge to try to get up. She just sat there for a minute, then shook her head.

"I'm fine... I'll be alright... Let's go make your waffles..." Shanon reassured, despite sounding horrible, soon gently picking up her little fossil and getting up with her tucked in one arm. The toon just clung to her and put her head on her shoulder, yawning comfortably, though what Modern Shelly didn't expect while watching over the toon version of herself was the fact that Shanon soon offered her a hug too. She obviously hugged her, tight, face buried in Shanon's worn Jurassic Park shirt that smelled like her floral perfume and old t-shirt. Shanon just kept her fossils close, soon giving the two kisses on the top of their heads.

"Good morning sweethearts..." Shanon softly greeted them both, relaxing as she rubbed their backs softly. She had honestly fully accepted the moderns as her kids too, yeah they were adults, but even adults need a mom too. Though after a nice hug, the modern fossil backed away, so Shanon nodded and just motioned her to follow, and they soon were off to the kitchen. Shanon just put Toon Shelly down on her spot on the counter and gave her a quick kiss on the head before she quietly started making the waffle batter she always did on Sundays, listening as the toon soon went off about her dream of taming 100 velociraptors like it was a normal one. The Moderns watched, both on stools, both armed with drinks and concern on their faces.

"No offense but she looks awful."

"How blunt and nice of you, Modern Vee." Modern Shelly commented.

"It's true though, she looks like she just got smacked down by a flu!" The robot pointed out, getting a little chuckle from the very obviously sick human.

"A cold was being passed around at work... It could be my time to suffer... Just like my coworkers." Shanon commented quietly, turning and looking at the two, bowl of batter in hand.

"Doesn't mean I won't make my sweethearts their waffles though." She added sweetly, giving them her award winning mom smile afterwards. Modern Shelly had to look away or she would've exploded, Modern Vee winced as she attempted to keep looking, but soon also looked away with a small sniff. Shanon just turned back to her waffles, shaking her head a little. Still mom deprived... She has to fix that when she's better. Though for now, it was waffle time, so she just kept making waffles with her pleased smile on her face, her fossil child rambling to her and her adopted adult kids watching with concern. Eventually Toon Vee came out of her hiding spot, probably lured out by the smell of waffles, and soon was also sitting near the Moderns- antennae down in concern and her screen having a very concerned look. She didn't say anything, but they all knew it was because Shanon looked so sick. And kept coughing here and there, sneezing into her shoulder too, acting like she had a cold. Despite this, she kept making breakfast, though once it was done, Modern Shelly decided it was time to get her to rest.

"Here, uhm, let's go get you laying down, so you can rest and get better." She said quietly, obviously not saying any names because she knew she would've cried if she said either Shanon or Mom. Shanon just accepted her fate, holding out her arm.

"I know I know, it's time for the couch, go ahead." Shanon softly said, getting a few giggles out of the toons as Modern Shelly gently took her hand and lead her off to the couch. Toon Vee followed silently, which was weird- until Shanon was laying on the couch that was. The toon covered Shanon in the overly fuzzy dinosaur blanket that was always on the back of the couch before she crawled onto it herself, and soon Shanon had a loafed Toon Vee snug on her side, her monitor being snug on her own hands, which were on Shanon's chest. Shanon just put her arm around her, keeping her close as she closed her eyes.

"Thanks girls... I'm comfortable." Shanon softly said, though Toon Shelly soon came over and put Shanon's favorite plush, the one of Toon Shelly she always had with her, on her other side, tail wagging as she did so.

"You can't sleep without your favorite plush!" The toon mentioned, earning herself some gentle head pats from the very spoiled and drowsy sick human.

"Thank you Shells, I appreciate it-"

"I got the cold medicine!! Nobody panic!!" Modern Vee yelled as she came running out of the hallway, getting a few laughs out of Shanon, while Modern Shelly just rolled her eyes playfully.

"Don't worry, nobody was freaking out yet, you don't have to run." Modern Shelly teased, and the modern robot slowed her pace at that. Shanon was giggling like crazy at the two's antics, while Toon Shelly soon ran off again, just to come back with Shanon's favorite mug in hand, filled with her favorite orange juice.

"Don't worry!! I got mom's drink!!" She said as she came over, handing the modern robot the dinosaur themed mug with a smile on her face and her tail wagging like crazy. Toon Vee just snored. More giggles from Shanon.

"Thanks kiddo, you're so helpful, good job." Modern Vee softly praised, making Toon Shelly emit an excited squeak. Adorable. How has that fossil not killed anyone with cuteness yet? Nobody knows. That didn't matter now though, as they had to give Shanon her medicine, but fortunately the human was pretty used to this whole routine and wasn't resisting in the slightest- just taking the medicine without a care in the world before drinking her juice, then getting snug and comfortable before promptly falling asleep again. The two moderns blinked at that, though Toon Shelly seemed to be used to that as she just went off to grab her sewing supplies to make plushies while she waited for her mom to rest up and feel better.

"That... Was surprisingly easy." Modern Shelly commented, gently brushing Shanon's hair away from her face to help keep her comfortable, while Modern Vee looked outside.

"Yeah... We should try to make her soup later." The other suggested, making the modern fossil chuckle.

"No, you're not touching the soup, we are NOT feeding my universe's mom glittery soup."

"But-"

"No buts, Modern Vee, we are not feeding her glittery soup." Modern Shelly insisted, getting a sad sigh from her partner. Toon Shelly, who had returned just to hear "we're not feeding her glittery soup" was absolutely giggling at the weird conversation she had walked into, though it soon was silent. A peaceful silent, minus the soft snores of the two napping on the couch. It was nice... It stayed like that for a while too, though Toon Vee absolutely did have zoomies after a nap, but she went outside for those since it was a nice day and she didn't want to wake up Shanon just because she had the urge to zoom. It was nice... The Moderns just relaxing and cuddling as they watched the toon zoom outside, Toon Shelly just working on her own thing in her chair, Sprout eventually coming over with cookies and helping out with meals- it was nice. Especially since Shanon honestly just slept for most of the day, and honestly just checked in on everyone whenever she was up (or begged for more soup, which Sprout always happily provided) or would sit by the toons and join in on whatever they were doing. It wasn't long before the oddly peaceful day came to and end, with Shanon trapping poor Sprout in sick cuddles and nap time (he didn't even fight it, he was asleep on the couch with her in minutes) and the Moderns in a pillow fort, the Toons on their laps, all watching some random dinosaur show.

"Mom is so chill when she's sick." Toon Shelly randomly stated, getting nods in agreement from the other three, Modern Shelly soon snacking on some of the popcorn they had.

"I'm just glad there was no sick flirting... Or being used a cat toy again."

"You weren't much better, missy. You were a koala begging to marry me on various medications!"

"I would marry you on cough syrup though-"

"VEE!"

Modern Shelly was now a blushing disaster hiding her face with her arms, the two Toons were laughing disasters, and Modern Vee just shrugged it all off.

"We're all so weird." Toon Vee pointed out, making Toon Shelly nod aggressively in agreement, snuggling into Modern Shelly's sweater with a yawn.

"Hey, weird just means we're fun, nothing wrong with us." Modern Vee pointed out, and the two Toons nodded once again in agreement. Then Toon Shelly sniffed and sneezed cutely into Modern Shelly's sweater on accident, making the trio look at her, then at each other.

Oh boy... This is going to be a long week.

What would've Tom eaten in the orphanage growing up? I love your history posts btw

It got a brief mention here, but I found a few new things so, this is kinda an update to a small paragraph I wrote there.

As I mentioned in the original post, food was served in a long dining hall with long tables, not dissimilar to the Great Hall but a lot less nice (no magical ceiling I'm afraid). Meals were generally alright, although largely vegetarian and bland.

Breakfast would've likely been something like gruel or bread with dripping. The probably weren't able to afford milk for a lot of children, although by the 50s children in schools in the East End (and over much of England I think) were given little jars of milk they ate with their school dinners. I'm not sure how far back this goes though, and whether something similar would've been given to the orphanage. I digress though, and I'll return to this in a moment.

Gruel, by all accounts, doesn't sound particularly nice because it was water and oats, but kids seemed to like bread with dripping, which was basically animal fat. It's vaguely unhealthy by todays standards, but it would've been a very important source of protein for Tom who likely didn't have anything else otherwise.

Now lunch gets a little complicated. Because of the way schools worked during the period, students could go home for lunch or bring their lunch to school. Alternatively, some schools provided free lunches to kids who wouldn't have anything otherwise, and I'm not quite sure whether this would've been a thing in the East End which were essentially slums. If Tom returned to the orphanage, I imagine something similar to breakfast would be served. Bread maybe, possibly dry or with a topping that was inexpensive and easy to mass produce, or gruel. Alternatively, kids would often bring potatoes with their name carved into it which schools would heat onsite in ovens. If Tom's school supplied food, it wouldn't be dissimilar to the type of food served at the orphanage, although perhaps, if there were benefactors, he would've had something a bit more fancy like a vegetable stew of some kind. Also, like I mentioned earlier, milk was given out to children, but I think this was more of a post-war thing because people were concerned with children's bone density. My mum can't stand milk to this day because they used to put them on the heaters and the milk would be warm by the time they were forced to drink it. My granny used to swap her milk with the boy who sat next to her because she also hated it.

The fourth option is that Tom simply went without food for lunch. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me — during the 30s, the Great Depression was obviously a huge issue, more so for the people in the area who were largely living sustenance based lifestyles where there would be little or no money by the end of the day. Even with limited government funding during the era, feeding orphans who would never amount to much probably wasn't a key concern.

The thing is though, the way food was structured during this period was that there was typically only one cooked meal a day and that was a midday meal, confusingly called "dinner". So Tom's main meal might well have been this lunch and he might well have returned to the orphanage to have a vegetable stew instead of having a main meal later. I think it's up to personal headcannons at this point, so if you want to decide whether Tom's main meal was in the middle of the day or later, what it was or whether it existed at all, that's all on you.

Dinner, like I mentioned, might have been vegetable stew, but if the main meal was at midday rather than later (like it typically is nowadays, especially in Western countries), it wouldn't have been dissimilar to breakfast. Basically, bread and some kind of topping whether that be dripping, butter or jam (but not both butter and jam because that would be a waste).

Like I mentioned in answer to a similar question, Tom's diet would've been vegetarian because meat was insanely expensive. If he had it at all for Christmas or on Sundays during the 1920s, he wouldn't have had it once the 30s and the Great Depression hit. He also wouldn't have eaten fruit regularly, except perhaps Christmas as fruit like oranges or other citrus was a typical Christmas gift. I don't think Tom would've gotten much sweet food, unless he stole it (very likely) as lots of corner stores sold chocolate bars for half a penny. Alcohol was also particularly common in the area so I imagine if Tom had stayed, he would've stolen alcohol eventually.

What coffees I think different x-men characters would order

I have no evidence for any of this, it’s based purely on vibes but also I am Correct. O5+ edition!

- Scott/Cyclops: my first answer is just straight black filter coffee. No nonsense, no milk, he wants to be caffeinated as quickly and efficiently as possible. My second, sillier answer is the world’s foamiest cappuccino because the texture is closer to that of soup, and Scott is nothing if not a soup stan

- Warren/Angel: a honey lavender latte. To go, if you please, he has places to be. Don’t worry though, you will be handsomely tipped. I can’t justify this one, the vibes are just undeniable

- Hank/Beast: I’m not sure if he’d be super pretentious about coffee or super pretentious about tea and regard coffee as uncouth, but since this is a coffee list I’ll go with the former. He would order a decaf espresso- he’s here for the taste, not the energy. This is insane behaviour btw, people who do this worry me

- Bobby/Iceman: an iced mocha- only he wouldn’t order it iced, he’d order a regular mocha and add the ice himself to be extra. Also he would like almond milk. He’ll accept oat milk if you don’t have it but know that he is judging you

- Jean/Phoenix: a hot chocolate. Listen I know I just said this was a coffee-only list but hear me out- as Phoenix she has limitless energy, she doesn’t even need to sleep, there isn’t really anything caffeine can offer her. However, even immortal, psychic, cosmic entities can enjoy the occasional sweet treat

- Alex/Havok: a long black with milk instead of hot water. “But Maggie, isn’t that just a flat white?” Yes. Yes it is. And you’ll explain that to him, but he’ll disagree and insist there is, in fact a difference. Then you’ll have to decide whether to keep arguing or just nod along, make him the flat white and hope he leaves and doesn’t come back

- Lorna/Polaris: an oat milk flat white with 2 sugars. There’s a running gag in recent comics that she reeeally likes coffee, but I’m choosing to interpret this as her having good taste as opposed to downing an entire pot of filter every 2-3 hours. And she feels like a sugar coffee kind of girl. She has to put up with Alex, she deserves sugar

Currently reading: Krabat by Ottfried Preußler. I read it ages ago when I was a kid and a lot of it went over my head, so I'm relistening to the audiobook rn and really loving it. The story is based on a Sorbian folk tale and it definitely reads like that, which is p great. Faustian, spooky, people turn into crows. What more can you ask for?

Currently watching: Agent Carter. A dear friend introduced me to it recently and yeah... they were right (so right). I'm not necessarily the bighest fan of the more Marvel-y aspects of it but I still enjoy it overall.

Going to answer this with my ocs since they are my true blorbos—

I like to think that all my characters enjoy the sweet things in life! I drown my coffee with oat milk and vanilla sweetener. I also love to bake! Plus, mostly all of my characters work at a bake house, so it’s not hard to imagine they have the same tastes as me.

I’m not big into cheese and it’s canon that my characters hate it too :p

Cram that little cup full of sugar, and you've got Dean hooked on a heavy-hitter fix that'll keep him up during long research sessions. (It also gives you the opportunity to distract him from said research, give him a taste of another steamy fix. 😘❤️‍🔥)

Beau Arlen

Ooh I feel like he'd protest at first and claim to solely drink Americanos, but he's a basic latte guy.

Hit him with some caramel or hazelnut, and he's happy. But you could also hook him into being a little adventurous with a pistachio or "brown sugar" latte lol. Like most things, Beau is willing to try almost anything once. 😉

Soldier Boy (Ben)

So he's definitely going to be thrown by all the modern selections of coffee. (i.e. "What the fuck is oatmilk?") And how the hell can you get milk out of cashews and almonds?

8:00am - i woke up to turn my alarm off, but then just got out of bed, grabbed my phone, and went back to bed T_T so much for putting my phone far away for me to actually be encouraged to get up... i was debating on whether or not i should go to my 9am asian am 20 lecture, but i found i could barely open my eyes bc of how much i cried so i just went back to sleep <3

12:00pm - i woke up, got ready, and made my way to my EEBIOL lecture at rolfe. i really love the way professor nonacs lectures and presents, this class has definitely become one of my favorites. and while i do enjoy the class and i feel pretty caught up and understanding of its content, tell me why i feel so unprepared for the midterm ;-; this goofy ahh test is like 3 mc's, 60+ true false, and then however many short answers, making the test 140+ points man. so painful. also, i was not expecting the questions to use scientific names of species, and im so screwed. one of the practice questions asked, "[SCIENTIFIC NAME OF ONE SNAIL] lowers the realized niche of [SCIENTIFIC NAME OF OTHER SNAIL]. True or False?" man i don't remember these snail names what the heck T_T

2:00pm - i went to kerckoff to hangout with friends. i dropped off my scooter and went to ackerman with cade to get food, bc i hadn't eaten anything since 11:30am Monday. that's actually so wild btw i can't believe i forgot to eat yesterday sigh. but yeah i got a crunchwrap supreme combo from tacobell and cade got matcha latte w oat milk and an egg sammich from bruin buzz yummers. i gave the taco i had to aj bc i can't finish it after eating crunchwrap supreme and he was disappointed that i dont use the taco bell sauce on my food ;-; for the rest of the afternoon, i was just hanging out, talking to friends, doing a quiz, and figuring out my sched for the week

4:00pm - i met with my boyfriend at ackerman and we returned back to the hill together. we had a very long conversation and before we knew it it was 7:00pm ;-;

7:00pm - my boyfriend and i got dinner at bplate (mid)

7:45pm - my boyfriend scootered me to drake stadium to workout with friends. a rock got into my eyeball during one of the runs and that hurt saur badly

10:00pm - friends and i went to insomnia cookies in westwood after workout! i got the m&m cookie it was so gas, i love how all their cookies are warmed and gooey and soft they're so good

11:20pm - i returned to my dorm, took another quiz, and ate a bumblebee tuna cracker box (i didnt eat enough at bplate bc i didnt rly like it so i was still very hungry). i meant to shower, but then my mom called me and i was on call with her for a long time. after the call, i had a nice long shower :)

clocking out! overall today was a 7/10 slay

I remember hating the taste of unsweetened almond milk but now it's tolerable, if not kinda good. and just as I thought I struck gold with Planet Oat unswt oat at 45 cal/cup, I find unswt almond at 30 cal/cup. and then cashew milk comes outta nowhere, tasting great, at 25 cal/cup.

why did I ever drink dairy milk???? the answer to that, btw, is protein. all the above milks have 1g protein or less per serving while dairy has like 8g
