The question is enough to make Delphine roll her eyes. They are both rivals – enemies even. They do not do love, or even niceties. If anything, they are only working together because they don’t have a choice. The world could potentially turn to ash or just not exist if they don’t work together.

And though Delphine insists her students are just students and not people to care about, Ezra considers his students to be his children who he empathizes with. This is something she finds weird. His ‘love’ for her and affection is also weird, too.

So, to answer his question, she replies with a question herself, “Should I?” Because would it need to be said if she did love him. It’s not that she does, but if she did, she probably would not need to tell him. Her emotions have always been difficult to pinpoint though.

Which is why she isn’t too sure. But one thing is for sure, is that she does not use her powers against him. She always lets Ezra have a choice. She never makes him do anything like hold her hand or make him express questions like this. It's all of his own accord. Therefore, she's certain, in a way, that that is love - isn't it? To have power, but not use it.

delphine doesn't understand ezra at all. she thinks he shouldn't have adopted the girls and amada. truthfully, she thinks he should have done what she did and let them be adopted by other families and just instructed them on how to use their powers. being their actual parent is just too weird in her opinion. she thinks he crossed a line and that's why she never got into a serious relationship with him -- she never wanted to be a parent to any of those children. she was there to instruct and nothing more or less. and when he told her she was too hard on them, she thought he forgot what they were aiming to do in the first place.

she does love him though. which was why she agreed to teach these bright stars how to control their powers and become potential super heroes (even if they don't become super heroes and it's a waste of talent). she does it for ezra. had anyone else asked her to spend her life teaching a bunch of kids, she'd laugh in their faces.

Delphine’s heart thumps to a chaotic rhythm as she looks at Ezra with narrowed eyes and an angry mouth. The fact of the matter is: he has finally now understood that she isn’t a good person. This should have happened ages ago. He should have known she took on the ‘Bright Star’ program for the power and the fact that she’d get an even bigger name for herself. Not because she cared for the sake of the world.

She did not instruct a bunch of children to control their powers for the sake of heart. The fact that he’s only now realizing this makes her want to laugh, despite the weird amount of nervousness she feels over losing her one true love and only friend. 

“Get in line then. Whenever that happens, I’m sure it won’t just be you with this wish.” Her hand waves down at the ground, before she turns away from him to focus on anything except him and his now clear picture of her. “Just because I don’t want to save this shitty world, doesn’t mean I’m evil. But fine, feel as you feel. You have indeed lost the only other person in your life, other than those ‘students’ of yours, who understands you.” 

She wants to walk away, but she doesn’t. Instead, she decides to do something she never does - Delphine uses her powers on him. “Leave.” And he does, because she told him to. And because despite it all, he knows if he stays things will likely be worse between them. “Save this wretched world, and let those kids die due to your bullshit hero complex.” 

A cruel half-laugh leaves her, and then she shuts up and stares at the fireplace as it flickers when he leaves the room.
