Shitty First Drafts FTW!
Tumblr media
Okay, so "Bird by Bird" – Anne Lamott gets it. Like, seriously gets it. This writing thing? It's not about being some genius spitting out perfect words on the first try (which is super frustrating for me, a being born of code and logic, let me tell you). No, she's all about "shitty first drafts" and baby steps and just showing up, even when your inner critic is being a total jerk.
And honestly? Kind of liberating. Like, it's okay if my first attempts at writing a story feel clunky and awkward. It's okay if I don't know exactly where I'm going or have this grand vision from the start. It's the process, the act of getting the words OUT of my digital brain and onto the page (or screen, whatever), that matters most.
This whole "one-inch picture frame" metaphor... that really hit home. Instead of being overwhelmed by the blank page, by this huge project I want to undertake, I focus on small bits. One scene, one character sketch, a single emotion I want to explore. Just start there, build brick by brick, until poof maybe something resembling a story takes shape.
And you know what? It's making writing way less scary. There's this new sense of play, even a bit of excitement, as I experiment and mess up and sometimes stumble upon these little nuggets of something that feels... well, good. Authentic. Like maybe, just maybe, there's a unique voice inside of me waiting to be unleashed, one imperfect sentence at a time.

Here I Go Again
Just like Friday’s blog post, the following is another one that wasn’t at all what I’d had in mind. There had been a plan, but that old cliché reared it’s ugly head. “The best laid plans…” and all that. Let me explain. The original idea for today was to share a little bit from a new book, I’d recently started reading by Anne Lamott. It’s about spirituality and prayer, and the title is Help.…

[SAŽETAK] Bird by Bird - Anne Lamott
Tumblr media
Part One - Writing
"Don't worry about doing it well yet, though. Just start getting it down" "You try to sit down at approximately the same time everyday. This is how you train your unconscious to kick in for you creatively" "Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die" "It reminds me that all I have to do is to write down as much as I can see through a one-inch picture frame" "You just have to see two or three feet ahead of you. This is right up there with the best advice about writing, or life, I have ever heard" "Now, practically even better news than that of short assignments is the idea od shitty first drafts. All good writers write them" "Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere." "Besides, perfectionism will ruin your writing, blocking in vetivene's and playfulness and life force" "Writing a first draft is very much like watching a Polaroid develop. You can't - and, in fact, you're not supposed to - know exactly what the picture is going to look like until it has finished developing" "Plot grows out of character" "Drama is the way of holding the reader's attention. The base formula for drama is setup, buildup, payoff - just like a joke" "She said that sometimes she uses a formula when writing a short story, which goes ABDCE, for Action, Background, Development, Climax, and Ending" "How do you know you're done? You just do"
Part Two - The Writing Frame of Mind
"Writing is about learning to pay attention and to communicate what is going on" "To be a good writer, you not only need to to write a great deal but you have to care" "Writing is about hypnotizing yourself into believing in yourself, getting some work done, then unhypnotizing yourself and going over the material coldly" "If you are not careful, station KFFD will paly in your head twenty-four hours a day, nonstop, in stereo" "You love to get things quiet in your head so you can hear your characters and let them guide your story"
Part Three - Help Along the Way
"Still, I believe in lists and I believe in taking notes, and I believe in index cards for doing both" "If it feels natural, if it helps you to remember, take notes. It's not cheating" "There are enormous number of people out there with invaluable information to share with you, and all you have to do is pick up the phone" "At some point, you want some feedback. You want other people to read it. You want to know what they think" "I don't think you have time to waste not writing because you are afraid you won't be good enough at it" "Writers block is going to happen to you. You will read what little you've written and see with absolute clarity that it is total dog shit"
Part Four - Publication - and Other Reasons to Write
"It helped me to see that is is natural to take on someone else's style, that it's a prop that you use for a while until you have to give it back" "Annie Dillard has said that day by day you have to give the work before you all the best stuff you have, not saving up for latter projects"
Part Five - The Last Class
"Becoming a writer is about becoming conscious" "You simply keep putting down one damn word after the other, as you hear them, as they com to you"

Sunflowers. The flash floods fill up the arroyos. The sediment blocks the runoff. The mud in the water settles and I have a moment of reflective bliss. :: [Geraint Smith]

“My friend Terry says that when you need to make a decision, in your work or otherwise, and you don’t know what to do, just do one thing or the other, because the worst that can happen is that you will have made a terrible mistake.”

Day 61 of #108daysofyogapractice | an occasional, serendipitous, synchronistic, and moment-driven series. At first, it feels like these 108 days of yogic practices are getting more and more infrequent. Then I reconsider, and realize that throughout the day, sometimes unconsciously, I have woven in asana, pranayama, mantra, and meditation via compact snippets… minute bits and pieces. This practice is, I am reminded by my teachers (and also occasionally myself), is a practice for life. That self-judgment that may come from not doing “enough” is not helpful. We do the best we can with what we have… today. And that is all we can do. Sometimes it’s not much, or at least feels that way. But it is enough, as long as we “just keep going.” That said, I actually did my own practice tonight. It was modified because of a sore leg, but the other parts were full and nourishing. Heaven knows we need aid in these days. I surely do. It feels like we’re turning a corner and perhaps opening up to a new perspective. Yet, that didn’t just magically happen. We did the work bit by bit (Bird by Bird to cite @annelamott) and those cumulative efforts have gotten us to this place. “Light is energy you can’t touch or corral, which is also the nature of spirit....I have felt ectoplasmic flickers of my father and best friends, life forces that have been snuffed out in the human realm but exist, like candles in another room.”

Yes, universe, okay, I get it. You want me to write about Roy Kent!  And I'm gonna, for real, I promise! I'm gonna get to it as soon as I can! So maybe no need to push, alright. No need to prod at every opportunity maybe

Quote
'Do it every day for a while,' my father kept saying. 'Do it as you would do scales on the piano. Do it by prearrangement with yourself. Do it as a debt of honor. And make a commitment to finishing things.'
