Getting smarter
One of my goals is to read each day. Currently, I am reading two books:
The Old Testament Is Dying: A Diagnosis and Recommended Treatment (Theological Explorations for the Church Catholic) by Brent A. Strawn.
and...
A Glad Obedience: Why and What We Sing by Walter Bruggemann
I read what interests me. Books about singing and theology interest me. When those two subjects coincide in the same book, well then, I’m all for it!
But reading is not the only way that I get smarter. In the The King and I by Rodgers and Hammerstein, there is a great lyric at the beginning of the song “Getting to Know You” where Anna says that:
“It's a very ancient saying, but a true and honest thought, that if you become a teacher, by your pupils you'll be taught.”
I am blessed to have several students that give me the opportunity to teach them the art of singing. I have explored and continue to explore the art of singing with them, and I am reminded to think about my own technique and art when I am singing. I am also honored to serve as a thesis supervisor for a couple of doctoral students at The Webber Institute for Worship Studies. I am learning more and more from reading the work of these doctoral students each day. Life itself is a teacher, and I think the greatest lesson is that God has made the world around us an open book if we just take a moment to learn from each other.
