"Couldn't Sleep, Kept Thinking...": Mohit Sharma On Final 2 Balls To Ravindra Jadeja

As Ravindra Jadeja hit the winning runs for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023 final, Mohit Sharma was shattered, having failed to defend the title for Gujarat Titans.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 final turned out to a sporting spectacle, with Ravindra Jadeja scoring 10 runs off the final 2 balls against Mohit Sharma of Gujarat Titans to earn his team 5th title. While it was pure ecstasy for the Super Kings, the Titans unit was in complete despair after failing to defend the title with the narrowest of margins. Mohit Sharma, who conceded a six and a four on the final two balls of the match to Jadeja, admitted that he couldn’t sleep that night, thinking what he could’ve done differently.

In a chat with The Indian Express, Mohit spoke about his plans and preparation for the final over, which went as planned until the final two balls.

“My mind was very clear in what I wanted to do. In the nets, I had practiced such situations and I have been in such scenarios before too. So I said let me bowl all balls yorkers and was backing my instinct,” the Haryana speedster said.

“They wanted to know what will be plan of action. I said I will again try to bowl yorker. People are now saying this and that but frankly it has no meaning. I knew what I wanted to do,” he added.

WIth Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja on strike, CSK could only score 3 runs from the first 4 balls. But, Jadeja sent the penultimate delivery straight down the ground for a six before hitting a four fine behind the stumps to complete the run-chase.

“I ran and tried to bowl (yorker) again. I just wanted to be focussed and back myself. Whole IPL I have done that. The ball landed where it shouldn’t have and Jadeja got his bat. I tried, I tried my best,” he says.

Having come into the team, literally from nowhere, Mohit truly had a comeback season that he would be remembered for a long time.

He said: “I couldn’t sleep. Sochta raha kya alag karta joh match jeet jaate. What if I could have bowled this ball or that ball? It’s not a nice feeling now. Somewhere something is missing but I’m trying to move on.”

“I was picked from nowhere. I remember speaking to Ani bhai (Anirudh Chaudhary, a veteran Haryana administrator) before the season what shall I do? Shall I continue or not. He had said I should try to play. I had come with no expectation and just have continued to work hard. My work ethic has remained the same. I don’t know what lies ahead, but I have enjoyed my journey,” the pacer went on to say.

Ignored by Mumbai, Harmeet Singh retires to play in US | Cricket News

MUMBAI: Amongst the plethora of India’s domestic cricketers to have retired from Indian cricket and moved to play professional cricket in the US in recent times is left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh. The 28-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Major Cricket League in the US and is playing for Seattle Thunderbolt this season. Incidentally, Harmeet’s captain in India’s 2012 under-19 World Cup-winning team, Unmukt Chand, has moved to the US to play in the Major Cricket League. In 31 first-class games, Harmeet picked up 87 wickets@34.18, while also scoring 733 runs@15.59, including a hundred. “I retired (in July) because I wasn’t getting to play for Mumbai, which is my home team. I’m getting good money to play cricket here, which gives me a sense of security. The level of cricket is good too,” Harmeet told TOI from Seattle. The tweaker moved to the US last year, and, like many Indian players who’ve retired from India cricket and shifted to the US, now hopes to play for them in the future. “If you stay in the US for 30 consecutive months, you qualify to play for the US national cricket team. I’ve completed 12 months, so 18 are left. By the beginning of 2023, I should be eligible to play international cricket for the US. By then, I would be 30. For a spinner, that’s prime age,” he said. Harmeet has quit Indian cricket with one big regret: Lack of opportunities. “I made my debut for Mumbai back in 2009, but never got one full season to prove myself. Still, till 2017, I kept pursuing my dream to play for Mumbai. Basically, in almost a decade, I got to play just nine games for Mumbai. I didn’t even get an opportunity to fail! I was never given a chance to prove myself,” he rued. Continuous snub by the Mumbai selectors forced Harmeet to play for Tripura in 2017. “I’m thankful for the chance that Tripura gave me. When I played for them in the 2017-18 season, I played a full Ranji Trophy season for the first time in my life. That experience taught me how to keep myself fit throughout the season. Still, as a professional player, there’s no assurance of your spot on the team. If your performance goes down, you can be dropped too. They wanted me to play for them last year, but then I had to live here continuously to qualify to play for the US,” he explained. For someone who was hyped up and earned the praise of former Australian skipper Ian Chappell and Bishan Singh Bedi with his fine show during India’s Under-19 World Cup triumph in Australia, Harmeet was shell-shocked to be ignored repeatedly by Mumbai. “After coming back from that World Cup, I played in the Irani and Duleep Trophy tournaments, and picked up four wickets in each game. Still, Mumbai didn’t play me in a Ranji Trophy game just 10 days later! For the next three years, I was ignored consistently. This was despite the fact that I had an offer from Anirudh Chaudhary to play for Haryana, but the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials assured my father that I would be given chances to play for Mumbai. It’s amazing! The national selectors had belief in me, which is why I was being picked for these tournaments, but the Mumbai selectors had no faith in me! They would call me for practice matches, in which I would get top batsmen out, and still not get picked. I once even told a selector: ‘Why do you keep calling me for these selection matches when you don’t want to pick me? Please don’t insult and humiliate me like that! If you don’t want to pick me, that’s fine. You want me to be a net bowler, I’m fine with that, but at least don’t give me hope!,” he recalled, the pain in his voice visible. During this period, one of the few people who believed in him was batting legend Rahul Dravid, who was then the mentor of the Rajasthan Royals. “I can’t thank Rahul bhai enough. He called me to join RR when I wasn’t playing at any level for Mumbai,” he said. What could be the reason he was snubbed by Mumbai for so long? “None ever gave me a reason why I wasn’t being picked. A few people said that I had attitude problems and disciplinary issues. C’mon, I was just 17 or 18 at that time. Many big players in Indian cricket went astray at that age. Even in the Indian team right now, we all know of a few players who had disciplinary issues in the past. I still deserved to get my chances,” he asserted. Finally, Harmeet staged a return to the Mumbai team in the 2014-15 season. “I played two games — picking four wickets against Baroda and six against Karnataka on a flat track to help Mumbai qualify for the knockouts. At that time, people said: ‘His bowling action has changed.’ Now, if I keep sitting at home, how will it not affect me! Bondita cried furiously, as her eyes and nose dripped of blood-rose colour. She had felt her temperature rising, and then eventually thought of rushing beneath a cold shower. All this while she was behaving as the strongest woman on earth. But it was all a pretense. She was as fragile as the woman next door- who listened to her husband’s wrath every night. Till here- she had loved her mother. Her mother’s affection was unparalleled. She never felt the need to reconsider its existence. Everything was as solid as the fact that the sun rose in the east, and that the Judge in the court listened before speaking. But there was something which was not absolute- her newly found feelings for ANIRUDH. It won’t be wrong to say that Anirudh has been her moon and sun for the longest period of time. She lived through him. And then she realized something- that looking at him without blinking was never going to be a futile exercise, that she is going to be that mad pup around Anirudh who lingered till it’s death around his master. She had arranged lilies, and Roses and had made a bouquet, thinking that her husband would be waiting for her too- like those heroes in fairy tales. But the saddest part never came in those stories- which shall make them more agreeable but less fascinating. She knew Anirudh was going to get married to a prospect- decided by his family- before he saved her. But it  never came to her that he had loved that prospect himself. That maybe they had exchanged letters and those sweet nothings much before she could write from her hands. And then she thought of the way Saudamini might have moved her hands through his hair or may have traced his jawline. And the biggest nightmare was him liking it and tracing the same pattern on his beloved. It was not the thought of them making love to each other in these years - secretively indeed- that crossed her mind - made her sick. It was the part that she was the problem. And also the fact that in all this she didn’t matter a minuscule.“Lovely, isn’t it?” Anirudh thought as he picked up the lilies and the roses kept on his study. He roamed around unconsciously and finally collided with Bondita’s bookshelf although he thought that he was well accommodated to his own. he giggled like a teenager, rubbing his subtle beard in an old fashion. If he could once tell her what giving those flowers meant. He had bought a silly book from London- which he read occasionally. It taught the meaning of different flowers given as a present. a sign of love and its protection. The roses reflected affinity and the Lilies were just what happiness looked like. Was she trying to say something? Well, Bondita was not really a fan of silly reading material - until he had found some absurd love- novels down her desk. And then he chuckled. Didn’t he maintain some smut stuff back in his drawer? He did.“Wasn’t she better- like always?” Bondita’s throat pained as she bolted the door to there study. “ who? “ Anirudh muttered. Bondita turned around to show her swollen face as she pressed her lips. “Her..” she trailed as she left her sentence in a sob. Anirudh leaped across to hold his wife by her shoulders. And then he looked at her. She looked drenched, parched and every adjective to describe something lethargic- something new and equally bad to her chirpy self. “I don’t know any her.” Anirudh answered all annoyed. “ Saudamini. Or what must I say ?” Bondita tried reasoning. “Rubbish, utterly…” Anirudh left her side to move aside. What more was she thinking ?“I won’t waste time in asking whether you love her or not - just tell me how you felt - when she loved you, how it felt Anirudh babu?” Bondita asked all dejected. “ Bondita, Just shut up.” Anirudh ran his hand through his hair, becoming furious on her allegations. Yes, they were allegations. Very big of a sought! She was accusing him of loving a miser. Was she serious?“ What did you see in her ?” Bondita asked her eyes swollen. And then she clasped her mouth with her hands. “ Oh my!” She screamed. “I am so sorry.” Bondita apologized. She felt dirty. She felt like a witch. “Take her in.” Bondita whispered slowly. “Shut up!!” Anirudh screamed. Bondita clicked her head in acceptance. She wanted to take in his wrath. Something that he shall give her willingly and she will preserve for the rest of her life. “You think you know everything. You think you read people. This has been your biggest misconception. You know what ? you don’t know anything.’ Anirudh lashed out.He thought that she was here to confess, maybe she could actually fill his heart’s thirst with her love. And here she was- accusing him. “ Your one-word Bondita - and I shall leave you forever. I will eliminate myself from your world.” Anirudh spoke up and finally decided to do it. “ You have bewitched my soul- my entire being - and I truly Bondita; I love- I love - I love you!” Anirudh looked down at her sitting figure. And then he slowly saw her turning her head. “ If that is the matter, Mr. Chaudhary, then..” Bondita took his hand and proceeded to kiss his knuckles. It has been a pleasure listening to all this from Anirudh. “May I get, the privilege of a confession.” Anirudh smiled. “Of course, You have been the one I have always waited to dissolve in. I know it may sound surreal- but that is the truth.” Bondita gaped for air. “ I don’t know if I am worthy of bewitching your soul- the one which has been the best I could see- But if I have done this- then I am ready to love you from the sun back to the moon. I love, love you so much, Anirudh Babu.” Bondita crafted each and every word like a thread in the helm. And then Anirudh took her hand to twirl her in a dance that would seal their love forever. They matched there steps in an old- brit-dance, All yours Anirudh muttered as Bondita lined his jawline with her hand. And then there was bliss. Completely .
