102: Posing

We went through body language in order to pose bucket kid in a way that conveyed an emotion. We talked about introversion and extroversion, meaning how a character curls in on them self or opens up to match how confident or positive they feel. Considering this we posed BK in several suggested emotions.

The first pose I used was joyful, where I made sure he was open, so his chest is puffed out slightly, his arms are away from him and he is standing tall. This worked out okay but i could possibly have done with more exaggeration to make it absolutely clear.

The second I chose was shy which was largely the opposite. I made the character very curled up with arms up as if comforting or protecting himself. he also is crouched slightly more with his feet and knees angled inwards which is something that people appear to do often when nervous. I did the first and second ones first since I knew they’d be opposites so I could get a grasp on two ends which I’m happy I did because attributes of each one made their way into the others.

The shocked pose was kinda similar to shy since shock is a pretty negative reaction and can involve fear. So the curled back and hands up in front partially come from that. At the same time however the hands being up are also supposedly a part of a fight or flight response, being ready to block something which is definitely a part of being shocked. I also had the character lean right back as if he just stepped back from the surprise and is trying to lean far away from whatever did shock him. I am pleased with this one too and feel like it portrays the emotion well though perhaps I could have found a way to exaggerate more.

For the attitude pose I wanted to make sure it was clear by using more than one gesture that would suggest it. So I included slanted hips, hands on hips, slightly tilted head, and also a puffed out chest and being stood mostly upright to show confidence which is largely related to attitude. This one was harder than expected because of the hand position, and I’m still not sure baout how the arms look as they’re a bit high up.

I also tried the prompt ‘seeing an airplane’ which i considered my own typical reaction for. I realised that often people often shade their eyes with their hand both to block the sun and to help see better. Since this prompt was similar to seeing a UFO I thought about how since they are more normal the reaction for a plane would be more neutral or even positive so I kept the character opened up and relaxed. I’m pretty happy with this pose. It’s rather simple but I think it looks the most natural by far.
