struggling with painting backgrounds. like the light is off, the colours as well... can’t really decide on the right thing.

Painting backgrounds is one of my favourite things to do during this whole projects, and as much as doing sketching and lineart and coming up with ideas, I feel quite confident, but once it gets to colouring I get a bit lost in all the details. I don’t know if it is because my colour palette is limited or because I just lack the right approach. 

Definitely what I’ve gathered so far is that good black and white base helps me decide on the direction of the lighting. However, sometimes I’m satisfied with the b&w version but when I add colour it falls apart. 

For example this background took me a while to get it right. But in the end I managed to get to the point where I’m satisfied with it. 

When I tried to do the same with this background I feel like it felt kind of flat. I’m not sure if it’s the design or the colouring. 

The background below also seems to be missing something. 

I tried to so some research on background layouts to look for some clues and the examples I found made me think that maybe I need just more textures done with lines that would fill in the page more - thus, make it more interesting to look at. That was the main factor, I think that helped me improve the first background that I showed here. But with the second and third I had a hard time developing them further.

This background layout by Ania Przybylko helped me a lot to see how to approach and organize the background so it would be clear. 

I also found this artwork by concept artist Jerom Denigot and even though he’s using thinner lines, the work is much more busy, which I think helps define the textures and the overall feeling of the space. I’m guessing this the main issue with my backgrounds. 

Since they’re very line- based I should probably dedicate more time to defining these lines and also include more elements that would make the scene more interesting to look at. 

So far, because I’ve already animated them and put them into the animation, I will leave them in. But I might come back to them after a while and maybe then I will be able to improve them.
