Portrait of the rhamphorynchid pterosaur Angustinaripterus longicephalus from the Middle Jurassic of Sichuan Province (China). This taxon is known from a single skull without a nape and the tips of the jaws. The length of the skull, according to paleontologist Peter Wellnhofer, reached 16.5 cm. The muzzle is long and straight, the front teeth are very large and form a fish trap with the mouth closed. The nostrils are elongated and slit-shaped, which is reflected in the generic name (the first part of it comes from the Latin words "angustus" and "naris", meaning, respectively, "narrow" and "nostrils"). The closest relative of Angustinarypterus is considered to be Sericipterus wucaivanensis from the Late Jurassic of Xinjiang. In this reconstruction, I depicted the pointed tip of the lower jaw, characteristic of rhamphorhynchids (especially the famous Rhamphorhynchus).

#Archovember Day 21 - Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis
While the three known species of Allosaurus were stalking across North America and Europe, China had its own top predator: the metriacanthosaurid carnosaur Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis. Yangchuanosaurus even survived the Jurassic Allosaurus, living from the Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous. Similar to Ceratosaurus, it had a bony ridge on its nose with multiple hornlets and ridges.
Like Allosaurus, Yangchuanosaurus was the apex predator at the time and would have had a similar diet of large dinosaurs like sauropods and ornithischians. They may have been pack hunters, as a single Yangchuanosaurus would have likely not been able to take down a sauropod alone. In the Shaximiao Formation, these would have been Protognathosaurus, Yuzhoulong, Omeisaurus, Datousaurus, Mamenchisaurus, Daanosaurus, and the club-tailed Shunosaurus. Ornithischian prey would have included stegosaurs like Huayangosaurus and Bashanosaurus, and neornithischians like Agilisaurus, Hexinlusaurus, and Xiaosaurus. Other theropods like Chuandongocoelurus, Xuanhanosaurus, Leshansaurus, Gasosaurus, and Kaijiangosaurus would have been both competitors and prey. It would have also lived alongside basal pterosaurs like Angustinaripterus, and pseudosuchians like Sunosuchus and Hsisosuchus. Life in the Suining Formation would have been similar, with the inclusion of the sauropod Qijianglong in the Early Cretaceous.

Angustinaripterus longicephalus
By Chris Masnaghetti, retrieved from http://www.pteros.com/, a website dedicated to education about Pterosaurs.
A reminder that we will not be able to do every pterosaur until we reach $240 in donations on our patreon, so please donate even a dollar if you can.
Name: Angustinaripterus longicephalus
Name Meaning: Narrow Nostril Wing
First Described: 1983
Described By: He, Xinlu et al.
Classification: Avemetatarsalia, Ornithodira, Pterosauromorpha, Pterosauria, Macronychoptera, Novialoidea, Breviquartossa, Rhamphorhynchidae
Angustinaripterus is a Rhamphorhynchid from the Xiashaximiao Formation in China, dating back to the Bathonian age of the Middle Jurassic, between 168 and 166 million years ago. It is known from a single skull that was very damaged, but is thought to have been fairly elongated and flat. The skull itself was about 16.5 cm long, leading to an estimated wingspan of 1.6 meters long. There was a very small crest on the top of the skull. Based on its close relatives, it probably had a long tail, and may have had a structure on the end of the tail like other Rhamphorhynchids.

Shaximiao Falls, 2021. Adobe Illustrator. A male Tuojiangosaurus in his prime enjoys the wet season in the middle Jurassic Shaximiao forest, cooling off in a pool shaded by the abundant flora: bennettites, cycads, conifers, ginkgos, and ferns. Surrounding him are some of the other denizens of the ecosystem. A tritylodont lurks in a rock shelter, a female Angustinaripterus holds her salamander quarry, and a softshell turtle rests besides the pool. A giant lacewing perches on a bennettite, calling for a mate.
