A look at slavery outside of the West
It has become popular to blame White people for slavery, to the point that many actually believe slavery was invented by or exclusively practiced by Europeans.
But the history of slavery outside the West is far more brutal.
The Arab slave trade emerged in the 7th century, 10 centuries before the Atlantic slave trade
Arabs sold Africans to the Middle East for a variety of jobs such as domestic work or harem guards - castrating male slaves was common, causing over half of males to bleed to death
The Arab slave trade was particularly brutal: it's estimated that 3/4 captured slaves died before they reached the market for sale
Historians estimate that between 10 and 18 million people were enslaved by Arab slave traders, including women and children taken as concubines.
Arabs did not create the slave trade out of nothing, in fact, enslaving conquered tribes was already common practice in Central Africa when they arrived.
The West African Songhai Empire relied heavily on captured slaves in all levels of society, even as soldiers.
Africans themselves also played a large role in facilitating the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
African tribes conducted raids on rival groups to provide slaves for sale. African middlemen facilitated trade between European traders and African suppliers.
The Arabs also had a slave trade in Europe. Estimates are that up to 1.25 million Europeans were enslaved by Barbary pirates, who would raid villages in coastal countries like Italy, France, England and Ireland, bringing them to North Africa for sale.
In some cases entire villages would be captured, such as the Irish coastal village of Baltimore, entirely raided in 1631.
These slaves faced a brutal future, engaging in hard labour or sexual servitude, and spending nights hot and overcrowded prisons called bagnios.
Many slaves captured by Barbary pirates were sold eastwards into the Ottoman Empire. Slavery was central to the Ottoman Empire, most towns had dedicated slavery markets called Yesirs.
Slaves came from Africa, the Caucasus, the Balkans and Eastern & Southern Europe.
Sexual slavery was a big part of Ottoman society. Slavic women were popular slaves, and Köçeks became a popular source of entertainment in the 19th century:
These were young boys, usually from European backgrounds, who were circumcised, cross-dressed and trained as dancers.
Hereditrary slavery is recorded in China dating back to the Xia Dynasty in 2100 BC. Africans purchased on the Silk Road were used as a sign of wealth.
After Chinese law began to treat women as property around 1000AD it was common to sell daughters and sisters into slavery.
The Mongols enslaves tens of thousands of Chinese as punishment for resistance.
In the post-Mongol Ming Dynasty, thousands of slaves were employed to do bureaucratic jobs for the government, and rich families also employed thousands of slaves to perform menial labour.
Slavery was common in American civilizations like the Aztec and Maya
Among the Aztecs, slavery was a punishment for a variety of crimes or even failure to pay taxes. Husbands and wives sold each other in times of economic hardship. Slaves were identified by wooden collars.
Slavery was also common practice in the civilizations of South-East Asia.
The Khmer Empire had a massive slave class that did much of the work building monuments like Angkor Wat. Historians estimate 25-35% of the population of Thailand/Burma were slaves in the 17th century.
Slavery also existed among Native American tribes. Slavery was common practice among Northwest tribes like the Tlingit, for whom one third of their population during the mid-1800s were slaves.
Various tribes practiced debt-slavery and enslaved captives of other tribes.
The only difference between these cases of slavery and that practiced by Europeans is that Europeans abolished slavery on humanitarian grounds, and spread this across the globe.
The intense focus on the White role in slavery is a product of widespread Anti-White animus.

American exceptionalism comes in two varieties: "we're exceptionally virtuous," and "we're exceptionally evil."
Both rely on lying about or being ignorant of history.

And that's just American history. Can you imagine world history?

Interlude: Cambodia → Thailand
Cambodia’s airport is bright, and the walls bear the Indochina style and form. Outside, the airport runway, and beyond, rows upon rows of jungle. Siem Reap is a small city. By New York standards, it is not much of a city at all. It more closely resembles the tourist-laded springs of the Caribbean, where every resident speaks multiple languages, and holds multiple currencies. In some ways, it is representative of Khmer culture, but in other ways, it is a space for Westerners (or Australians) to embrace just a touch of history that they had never seen before. While this is a space for tourists, it is far from a “trap.” We leave Cambodia feeling better than when we entered. These temples carry a significant spiritual meaning, and although we do not practice Hindu nor Buddhist rituals, we understand the models of the cleansing of the spirit, the connections between heaven and earth, mind and soul. This comes from engaging with people who are passionate about their craft, their culture, their love of the world, and Angkor Wat, the carvings pictures, and stonework, is proof that art, in all its forms, is an expression of believing in one’s purpose and significance in the world.
Cambodia began on a rather empty street in Siem Reap. We had heard that COVID decimated tourism, however, we did not realize how empty it actually was. The only signs of life came from “Pub Street,” a western-style row of bars that better resembled New Orleans than anywhere in Cambodia. Khmer food was not wholly familiar to us; we did not expect the earthier flavors in Thai forms.
Our expectations of the temples of Angkor were high, and we were still blown away by the magnitude of the work, and the divine history involved. Angkor Wat was massive, beautiful, and awesome, in the way that it inspires awe. And that was only one temple out of the many we saw in one day. Our guide, Nak, who we will name forever and ever, was so good. It was clear that he loved his culture, and wanted to share that with us.
Khmer food tastes like Thai, and there was an array of different restaurants—cheap and pricy—around town. One of the most expensive restaurants only cost $10 per dish. At first we were the only people in the restaurant, and the slew of wait staff huddled around us. But more customers came, and we felt less like the country depended on us, and instead, tourism was returning.
Phnom Kulen (Phnom either means mountain or forest, we can’t remember at the time of writing) had more people. It was our chance to see what nature had to do with Cambodian culture. While it was not crowded, we could tell that tourism had arrived in Siem Reap.
That night, Alex went out to a night market, where felt like he had done some "Anthony Bourdain Cosplay." He was one of the only westerners around in a fairly busy street of nightlife.
Siem Reap is a pilgrimage to locals and believers in the Hindu and Buddhist faith. It is a sacred place. In some ways, it reminded us of Jerusalem. Over these few days, we noticed how the Cambodians' struggle resonates with that of the Jews. Both cultures celebrate a long lost history, keeping the memory and tradition alive. Cambodians, too, have endured a genocide, one possibly greater than the Holocaust. Cambodia is a small country, and beneath the Khmer Rouge, lost over two million people, most were educators, thinkers, doctors, and more. But unlike the Jews, who had America and the UK to help them after the war, and to help establish Israel, the Khmer have had far less assistance from China, the UN or other major groups. Their struggle is still ongoing, and their recovery is slow. Climate change makes their country even more vulnerable. Actions can be made to help Cambodia. Money. Tourism. Eliminating racism. This is not a "your dollar matters" speech, but rather a statement on the importance of honoring a culture before it is lost forever.
In that spirit, we'll remember a lot of amazing parts on this leg of the honeymoon:
Food
Alex
1) Lok Lak - Sambo (pepper sauce is amazing!)
2) Chicken Curry - Tour Lunch Spot Day One
3) Fried crickets - Night Market
4) Beef Stir Fry with Red Ants - Changkhran Khmer
5) TIE: Rice Waffle and Khanom Bueang - Reclining Buddha Temple
Rachel
1) Chicken Curry - Tour Lunch Spot Day One
2) Khanom bueang - Reclining Buddha Temple
3) Amok - Sambo
4) Curry - Changkhran Khmer
5) Eggs, Toast, Fruit - Baby Elephant Hotel (daily passionfruit)
Sights/Experiences
Alex
1) Angkor Wat - specifically bas-reliefs
2) Bayon
3) Banteay Srei
4) Ta Prohm
5) Night Market
Rachel
1) Banteay Srei Temple
2) Angkor Wat
3) Phnom Kulen Waterfall
4) Bayon Temple
5) Hot Air Balloon over Angkor
Key Memory You Will Take With You
Alex - Traversing the grounds of Angkor Wat. It was one thing to see the temple from a distance; that’s like looking at a photograph. As we approached, and the temple became larger, it became more real, and I suddenly realized the age and scope and the existence of this temple.
Rachel - Being at the top of Angkor Wat, and looking down at the rest of the grounds. Being awestruck by its sheer magnitude, and the incredible restoration that is still being done.
Alex: I think we had a very similar key moment we would take with us. These temples are quite important, and unmatched compared to the rest of the world. How does it compare to other historical sites you’ve visited: mayan temples, Great Wall, etc.?
Rachel: I feel like the religious significance of Angkor Wat is much more dominant of a theme than most of the other ancient temples that I’ve seen. Of course, they’re all temples, but the depictions of Hindu gods and Buddhas alike I just found really impactful.
Alex: One difference that I think is part of the reason you and I find this striking is how massive the Khmer Empire was here, compared to the Mayans. Hundreds of thousands of more people lived here than in Guatemala or obviously, Belize, which we visited. Belize was just a few tiny pyramids. Even the smallest temple that we visited was the same size. And there’s like 50 of them, most bigger. I also like Hindu myths as well. I’m not super familiar but I knew some of the stories. How about you?
Rachel: I feel similarly.
Alex: Like you knew who Ganesha was and who Buddha was?
Rachel: Yes, of course. But I think that the history about the gods and the mythology that surrounds them felt mostly new to me. I really appreciate how detailed our tour guide, Nak, was.
Alex: Yes, I did send his info over to Benny and Julia, and maybe they will get the same experience. I think Julia especially will love it! He was so thrilled at the idea of telling these stories. As a storyteller, lecturer, teacher, I really appreciated the way that education is involved in these cultural heritage sites. We’re talking a lot about the temples, because we didn’t really do much else here. This was a trip where the sites were actually the stars. Not the food, not the nature, but the history.
Rachel: But let’s not forget about that natural park. From the views to the waterfall, it really was incredibly beautiful.
Alex: I almost feel sad to leave Cambodia, but to be honest, there’s not much else for it to offer us. The culture is rich, as is every culture, but the poverty is challenging, and there’s not a lot to do without many risks.
Rachel: It’s certainly a bittersweet ending, but to be honest, I’m ready to move on to Thailand.
Alex: I suppose you’re right.
Rachel: I don’t mean to knock Cambodia, but Thailand will be more our speed. I loved the temples but it’s time to move ahead.
Alex: Long story short, everyone should visit Cambodia to see these temples. Funnel money into their economy, and help these people prosper.
Rachel: That’s very “Naga” of you, my love.
Alex: For those reading, google “Naga Hindu” and you’ll know what we mean.

Punctuation Day
I took a recent story from my drafts and looked for punctuation mistakes and made it better
Across ASEAN: A Year in Every School
Tara had always known her life would be different. While her friends in their hometown stayed in one school, in one country, her world was an open map. Her mother, Ms. Rivera, was an international school teacher whose passion for education took them across the vibrant tapestry of ASEAN countries. Every year, they packed their bags, said goodbye, and stepped into a new chapter in a new place.
Tara’s journey began in Brunei, a peaceful, green country where the air felt cool and everything seemed to move a little slower. She was nervous on her first day at Jerudong International School, where she started nursery, but she quickly learned how warm the people were. Her classmates came from all over the world, and soon, Tara found herself sharing her lunch with a girl from New Zealand and learning phrases in Malay from a boy from Malaysia. In Brunei, she discovered the beauty of stillness and the power of nature’s silence during a visit to the pristine Ulu Temburong rainforest.
After Brunei, Tara moved to Cambodia, where she experienced a deeper connection to history. Her mother taught at Westview Cambodian International School, where Tara attended preschool, and she quickly fell in love with the country’s rich culture. She visited the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, learning about the Khmer Empire. Though Cambodia was still healing from its tragic past, Tara admired the strength and resilience of its people.
Next was Indonesia, specifically Jakarta. The city’s energy was intense, and Tara initially found it overwhelming. But ACG School Jakarta had a strong sense of community at kindergarten, and soon she felt at home again. She joined lots of fun days at school. During the holidays, her mother would take her to Bali and Surabaya, where Tara found peace by the ocean, surrounded by the island’s unique spirituality.
Tara then attended the International School of Laos. Laos had a more laid-back, traditional way of life. She enjoyed peaceful boat rides along the Mekong River and was captured by the golden temples scattered around Vientiane. The simplicity of life in Laos gave Tara time to reflect and appreciate the slower pace. The people were kind, and Tara formed close bonds with her 1st-grade classmates, spending weekends exploring waterfalls and caves in the countryside.
Malaysia was next, where Tara’s mother taught at Taylor's International School in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia was a beautiful mix of cultures, and Tara adored the colorful festivals. She celebrated Hari Raya with her 2nd-grade friends, tasted traditional satay and nasi lemak, and was fascinated by the blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences in the country. During weekends, she and her mom would visit the Batu Caves and sometimes even take short trips to Langkawi or Penang.
In Myanmar, Tara’s mother taught at Yangon Academy International School. Tara was fascinated by the ancient temples of Bagan, with their golden spires glinting in the sunlight. Life in Myanmar was a blend of history and tradition. At school, she joined a service-learning group that worked with local communities, and through that experience, she grew to love Myanmar’s deep culture and resilient spirit. Tara often found herself on the streets of Yangon, wandering the markets and tasting the unique flavors of Burmese cuisine, like mohinga and tea leaf salad.
After Myanmar, Tara and her mother moved to the Philippines, a place of incredible warmth and laughter. At Aguinaldo International School Manila, Tara found the Filipino spirit infectious. People were always smiling, and her classmates from 5th to 6th grade were quick to include her in everything. She learned traditional dances for school events, and karaoke nights with her friends became a weekly tradition. Tara’s mom, who grew up in the Philippines, showed her the beaches of Palawan and the mountains of Baguio. Here, Tara felt the closest to her roots and family.
The next destination was Singapore, a bustling city-state. Life was fast-paced here, and HWA International School was huge. Tara really enjoyed her 7th and 8th grade there. The clean streets and efficient MRT were a stark contrast to the lush greenery of Brunei, but Tara found herself enjoying both the cosmopolitan feel of Singapore and the peaceful walks around Gardens by the Bay.
In Thailand, her 9th and 10th-grade life was vibrant and full of adventure. Tara enrolled at the XCL American School of Bangkok and was immediately taken by the country’s friendliness. The bustling markets, the flavorful food, and the intricate temples gave her a sense of wonder every day. Tara and her mother stayed in a local village and learned how to cook traditional Thai dishes. Thailand’s warm spirit matched its tropical weather, and Tara felt like she could stay there forever.
Finally, they arrived in Vietnam, the last stop on their ASEAN journey. Tara’s mother took a position at Hanoi Academy. Vietnam was a blend of old and new, with its buzzing motorbikes and peaceful rice fields. Tara joined a photography club, capturing the intricate details of daily life in Hanoi—the street vendors, the ancient temples, and the lively markets. She learned to appreciate the delicate flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, from pho to banh mi. By the time she was ready to graduate, she felt a deep connection to the ASEAN region.
Each country had given Tara more than just a new school. From Brunei’s quiet beauty to Vietnam’s rich culture, she had woven herself into the fabric of Southeast Asia. She had friends in every corner, memories tied to every place, and a heart full of stories that stretched across borders. As she stood at the airport, waiting for her flight to university, she realized her adventure was only just beginning.

Join us as we explore the top 5 things to do in Siem Reap, where each corner reveals a new facet of its timeless allure.
5 Things to do in Siem Reap you must try!
1.Explore the Old Market
Embark on a cultural journey at the Old Market, also known as Phsar Chas, in the heart of Siem Reap. This bustling market, a focal point of activity from sunrise to sunset, showcases a diverse array of locally crafted treasures, exquisite fabrics, and fresh produce. Beyond its role as a marketplace, the Old Market provides a unique opportunity to engage with the friendly locals and gain insights into their daily lives. Indulge your palate in the culinary delights of street food, savoring iconic dishes like fish amok and refreshing sugar cane juice. For the adventurous foodie, daringly explore exotic fruits you may have never encountered before—a culinary adventure that promises to be both intriguing and rewarding.
2.Phare Cambodian Circus
For a unique and captivating experience in Siem Reap, consider attending the Phare Cambodian Circus—an enchanting evening activity that adds a touch of creativity to your temple-hopping adventures. The one-hour performance seamlessly blends traditional and modern elements, featuring mesmerizing theatre, acrobatics, live music, and comedy. More than just a circus, Phare is a cultural and social enterprise that has evolved into one of Cambodia's significant community development initiatives since its establishment in 2013. Immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of this exceptional show, providing entertainment while contributing to the local community's growth and development.
3.Take times at Siem Reap River
Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Siem Reap River, especially during the early evening, to discover the enchanting charm that the riverside has to offer. Among the notable Siem Reap attractions is the Made in Cambodia Market, situated along the riverbank and open daily from 12:00 to 18:00. This market stands out for its commitment to making a positive impact, providing a platform for local Cambodian craftsmen to showcase and sell their arts and crafts. Unlike the bustling central Siem Reap night markets, the Made in Cambodia Market offers a more relaxed ambiance with a scattering of bars and street food vendors.
This market serves a dual purpose, not only offering visitors a unique shopping experience but also contributing to the local economy by creating job opportunities for villagers engaged in crafting handmade items. Support the community and indulge in the authentic creations at this riverside market.
4.Enjoy Cambodian cooking classes
Immerse yourself in the savory world of Khmer cuisine through captivating cooking classes, a must-experience attraction in Siem Reap. With its rich diversity and delectable flavors, Asian food, and particularly Khmer cuisine, holds a special place in culinary exploration. Enroll in these popular cooking classes to embark on a gastronomic journey guided by local chefs. Discover the art of preparing beloved Khmer dishes, gaining insights into traditional recipes and culinary techniques. Armed with newfound skills, you'll have the opportunity to recreate these flavorful dishes at home, impressing your family and friends with the tastes of Cambodia.
5.Discover the Angkor Wat
Embark on a journey through time and marvel at the architectural masterpiece of Angkor Wat, the crowning jewel of Siem Reap attractions. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ancient temple complex, built in the 12th century by Khmer King Suryavarman II, is a testament to the grandeur of Khmer architecture. For history enthusiasts, the intricately carved walls tell tales of a bygone era, allowing you to immerse yourself in the living history of Cambodia. To enhance your experience, we recommend an early morning visit, arriving before sunrise to witness the mesmerizing moment when the sun ascends over the iconic spires of Angkor Wat, creating a breathtaking scene that will undoubtedly leave you awestruck.
In conclusion, Siem Reap stands as a multifaceted gem, offering an array of experiences that seamlessly blend tradition and modernity. Whether you're captivated by the bustling Old Market, enchanted by the cultural performances at the Phare Cambodian Circus, or marveling at the ancient grandeur of Angkor Wat, the city invites you on a journey of discovery.
To elevate your Siem Reap experience, consider the indulgence of Park Hyatt Siem Reap, a luxurious retreat nestled in the heart of the city. After a day of exploration, unwind in the opulent comfort of the hotel, where Khmer-inspired aesthetics meet world-class hospitality, providing a perfect sanctuary to reflect on the rich tapestry of Siem Reap's offerings. Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
I’ve been on a 90-day trip to every time zone around the globe. My mission is world peace through cultural exchange. I was sustainable when I could by using local transportation, buses, and trains. I was solo, carrying a small backpack, called a “personal item,” that fit under the seat in front of me on a plane.
In this episode, the FAQ is: Should I bring earplugs on my trip?
.
Today’s Destination is Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Today’s Mistake- I left my phone at the bus office.
Travel Advice: Keep a pen handy
FAQ: Should I bring earplugs on my trip?
Yes. You can first step away from the noise, turn the volume down, or try these tips to save your hearing. Noise-canceling headphones may be preferred, but you can use earplugs if traveling light. Do they work well? They are better than nothing. Here are three steps to using foam earplugs: Roll, pull, and hold. Roll them to fit your ear, pull back your ear, and then insert them until they fit comfortably. The show notes have tips to help you out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM3R_1JceWo
Today’s destination: Phnom Penh, Cambodia
…..before you go, read up on the region's history and try to understand the heartbreaking things that happened in this country. The country went through some tough years in the last century. They are a comparatively less developed country, but the people have hope for the future. Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, meets at the junction of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers. Historically, it became a trading hub for the Khmer Empire and French colonialists. Listen to the Siem Reap podcast if you can later on.
I flew here from Ho Chi Minh City, but taking a bus and a lot cheaper would have been easy. Cambodia Angkor Airlines is reputed to have the best safety standards in the country, although I noticed that my plane was very seasoned. It was a much older model.
https://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-guides/cambodia-travel-tips/phnom-penh/
US citizens need to apply for a Cambodia visa. Cambodia e-visa cost: The Total fee is USD 36, and the E-visa processing time takes 2 - 5 business days. I had to change the date of birth on my visa application, as it was incorrect, which was easy to accomplish. Between when I first submitted it and it printed out, the date got switched, so I fixed it ahead of time.
Rice (bai) is the most essential food in the country, and more than 2,000 species once grew in Cambodia. There's hardly a dish that does not contain rice, including noodles made from rice, desserts, cakes, and alcoholic beverages, and no Khmer meal is complete without boiled rice.
Although Cambodia's official currency is the Riel, the US Dollar is used in most transactions, so I recommend taking some US Dollars in cash (with some small denomination notes).
The city’s walkable riverfront is lined with parks, restaurants, and bars, including the ornate Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum, displaying artifacts from around the country. At the city’s heart is the Art Deco Central Market. I did a lot of mid-day walking along the river at Sisowath Quay, the most popular downtown promenade. There were few people there mid-day. It is scenic; you can see boats on the Tonle Sap River and look across a beautiful vista. Walk here between the Royal Palace and Wat Phnom.
My hotel in Phnom Penh was across the street from the Independence Monument and near the Cambodia Friendship Monument. They called it the Monument District. At night, the locals, by the hundreds, walked in a counterclockwise direction around the park to get some fresh air and exercise. It was a social experience, too. Families and singles all gathered here. I was part of the walk since I had been too hot to walk much during the day's heat.
The Independence Monument in Phnom Penh was built in 1958 to memorialize Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. It stands on a roundabout at the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the city's center.
https://www.planetware.com/cambodia/phnom-penh-cam-1-2.htm
In the Khmer Rouge's Security Prison S-21, it was here that some of the regime's worst torture atrocities were carried out. More than 17,000 people passed through these gates between 1975 and 1978, accused of betraying the revolution in some way. The Tuol Sleng Museum was where prisoners were housed, a former school. You can see photographs of what happened here. You can walk through the prison rooms, formerly classrooms. It’s two stories, with offices and rooms with evidence of those killed. The detailed notes and photographs remain along with some of the remnants of furniture and statues of those who died. I took a tuk-tuk to visit this sad place at Street 113, Phnom Penh. I was unhappy but hopeful for a better future when I left here.
Today’s Mistake- I left my phone at the bus office.
While waiting for the bus, I entered the station and met the people working for the bus tour company. I had about an hour to wait, so I said hi and then sat down to relax from the sun. What I forgot at the desk was my phone. About ten minutes later, the driver arrived and said it was time to board the bus. In my rush, I left my phone on the desk. We started down the road, and then I remembered, so I told the tour guide I needed to get out. He said he would call and make sure they had it, and we would soon go back for it after we dropped someone at the hospital. I thought that was strange, but that’s precisely what happened. That was my second time leaving my phone behind on this trip. I was learning a lesson again. Not to leave my phone anywhere. Don’t be like me. I was lucky. You may not be so fortunate.
Today’s Travel Advice-Keep a pen handy
In today’s world of digital technology, one thing you will still need is a pen. There will be a time you need to write down something to remember. It could be a code, a phone number, or a key phrase. Keep something to write with nearby.
