Saitama’s TV is a Shorp, guess he couldn’t afford a Stony

that feeling when you’ve been endowed with inhuman strength and can’t kill a mosquito, children are crying, cities are being destroyed, all because you can’t kill a damn mosquito

so Genos is voiced by an actor named Zach Aguilar, he only has six credits to his name on behindthevoiceactors.com including Sword Art Online and Seven Deadly Sins and looks...really young

to be fair his Japanese actor Kaito Ishikawa looks really young too

again with the eye injuries

some people have criticized OPM for its sexualized women and I just want you to direct that beef towards Murata because ONE doesn’t draw like that, like the mosquito woman in the webcomic had a human face and breasts but she didn’t look like this

honestly though aside from that upskirt shot of Tatsumaki the depictions of women in this series never bothered me (and I am including that dominatrix from a few chapters ago)

Genos's voice is quite deep in a way I didn’t expect

meanwhile I genuinely am fighting off a mosquito in real life

for some reason the way Saitama says “seriously” here is hilarious

take a shot every time Genos is dismembered

also I’ve always said Genos’s name wrong (I say it like Gee-nos) and I kinda don’t care

sometimes dubs over enunciate names and its just funny to me

I like how the intro makes it look like Saitama’s having fun when he really isn’t

I do like that he’s buff in a way that makes sense, like he isn’t suddenly built like Dio when he takes a shirt off

that OPM/Deadpool mashup from Anime Boston last year actually makes this fitness test funnier to me

that poor punching machine was just one day away from retirement

again Genos doesn’t have a dick, I’m not sure I understand how SaiGenos porn works unless he has some kind of attachment

deep down part of me wants to buy an oppai hoodie

so Amai Mask is voiced by an actor names Ben Lepley who’s biggest project aside from this is probably the Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans dub

Sneck is voiced by Kirk Thorton who voices Saix in Kingdom Hearts, is the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog since 2010, codirected the Bleach dub along with Wendee Lee, is Kisame in Naruto, and Master Roshi in Dragon Ball Super

the moment its revealed Saitama saving that stupid kid actually led to the hero association being formed and he doesn’t even notice

“frankly its as if there’s a god residing in that body” this sounds really gay out of context

I like Sneck, he’s ridiculous

wow a flip phone, then again a few years back I was told that in Japan smart phones aren’t necessarily the norm like they are in America (though within those years I’m not sure if its changed)

I am happy the Caped Baldy made it into the dub though

always loved how they animated Genos curling his fingers into a fist, its just so seamless

this whole sequence was impressive, so I hope the people shitting on the last episode felt like little bitches when this one aired

also loved the way Genos’s cheek squishes under Saitama’s finger

the most epic boop in anime history

a small detail I appreciate is you can see the glow in Genos’s eyes fade back into their usual look, its small details like this and the finger animation I mentioned that help make this anime so visually appealing

when they’re at the restaurant you can hear a background woman say “oh my goodness what a handsome man”, felt like bringing it up

wow I got lucky, they call him Amai Mask and not Sweet Mask so I don’t have to feel dumb for using that name

who takes a walk to digest a meal?

when Saitama calls Genos a Class S it sounded like he said “class ass”

to be honest its hard for me to look at Amai Mask and not be lost in the fact that Mamoru Miyano voiced him in Japanese, he’s probably the first Japanese voice actor along with Kappei Yamaguchi (yes its because they were Light and L) I became really aware of

Saitama: casually eats a phallic popsicle with his shirt off

“may I live here with you now?” “no way. absolutely not” “I have rent money” *three hour pause* “did you bring a toothbrush?” “YES!”

so I found this scene funnier in the manga as Saitama doesn’t stop and rethink anything, Genos throws the money down and he’s all “yo come on in!”

today youtube recommended me some video titled “just how strong is One Punch Man” uuuuuuuuugggggghhhhhh.....literally no one in canon ever calls him that, if you watched the anime or read the manga you would know this

also who the fuck cares how powerful Saitama would be by our real world standards? our real world standards are low

upon reaching a game changing discovery that took decades to find follow these steps

step one: make yourself hot again

step two: clone yourself

step three: basically throw a bunch of genes into a blender and see what you create

I like that OPM and MP100 both utilized something of a mixed media approach to animation

I toughed it out and endured the pain.”

well damn if only Izuku knew this he would have been spared having to drag a fridge across a beach

also some fans like to come up with a genuine reason why Saitama is so strong, but I hope ONE never tells us this because why does it matter?

“human beings are strong because we can change ourselves!” and with this one sentence Saitama managed to communicate what FMAB, HXH, YYH, NGE, and just about every other classique anime about the human experience needed its entire run to say

“you’re so...full of crap!” this is like the only time Genos gets angry at Saitama

part of me used to think these one day sales were just a Japanese thing, no in America we have them (usually in clothing outlets) and it sucks being the employee working that day

Thoughts on the “One Punch Man” English dub. Episode one.

hey remember months ago when I finished recapping the MP100 dub and I said I was either gonna do OPM or BNHA next and now I’ve gone through BNHA, Sailor Moon Crystal, Jojo, and some YYH episodes and still haven’t done OPM?

I have been really wanting to revisit this anime, all I’ve heard of this dub was the teaser clip they first released for the dub where the only voice we heard was Max Mittelman as Saitama. I remember not liking his voice as I remember thinking it was too monotone, but I also didn’t like Joseph Joestar’s English voice at first and in the end I loved Ben in the role. plus Max was really good as Ritsu in the MP100 dub so I know he has talent.

you could say this anime starts off with a bang!

“guess I’ll go” I mean he’s got nothing better to do

the attempt at making Saitama look badass is just funny to me since I know the character so well at this point

oh hey its the crying little girl in pink that the hero must save from the monster because she represents the frailty of the human experience cliche!

at least I know ONE was being self aware with this

the blue Piccolo knockoff is played by our friend Christopher Sabat

I mean...of coarse he is, but more amusingly in Japanese he was voiced by Ryuusei Nakao who was Freeza

anyway goodbye Vaccine Man

I love this intro, I will be sad if season two chooses a different song (though its entirely possible it will be just as good)

like I honestly love this song more than the MP100 intro

so Saitama with hair in the anime still looks like this one guy from Gintama, I don’t watch that anime so I don’t know his name

friendly reminder Saitama was genuinely depressed before the series began

believe it or not this fucking kid is part of the “OPM and MP100 are in the same universe” theory

“what the hell am I doing” you’re having that “body moving on its own” thing that All Might told Izuku about

I hate watching stuff happen to eyes...

“after that day I trained so hard I went bald” but its a look

I always liked the detail of the child pointing to Saitama as his mother pulls him away

“put some pants on”

Saitama is so happy even though this guy just killed his brother, like its endearing

Saitama is all “too bad that didn’t kill me”

“having overwhelming strength is pretty boring actually” with great power comes great apathy

“as the days pass my emotions grow more distant. fear, tension, joy, anger, I feel none of that anymore. in exchange for power maybe I’ve lost something that’s essential for being human” again Saitama was very depressed

this fight scene is cool, but I may as well say it now. MP100 is animated better than OPM, this is not to say OPM was badly made (far from it) but people have claimed its better animated than MP100 and that isn’t true. I’m sorry but it isn’t.

like I’ll get into this with later episodes, but I remember as the anime was coming out fans were overly critical of the animation and would compare it to the flip book style nature of Murata’s drawings and it pissed me off to see it not get the credit it deserved, but now some are trying to take credit away from MP100 and give it to OPM and that’s wrong too (I wonder how much of it is people not liking ONE’s art since MP100 was faithful to it while OPM wasn’t)

still this was a cool action scene

like I want people to remember this series was described as having a modest budget and what made it come together was the staff having passion for the project

so if anyone ever tries to excuse their favorite show’s animation being sub par by saying “they didn’t have a big budget” know how bullshit that argument is

on the flip side of what I said before about the intro, I think MP100 has the better closing

this Stinger guy looks like Hiei if he could emote

I like that Mumen Rider wears his goggles over his glasses, I guess contact lenses aren’t cheap

“its actually a lot easier. without an audience!” I know sentence pacing and mouth flaps are always going to be issues with dubbing anime, but in scenes like that its really obvious because of the pause he makes mid sentence

because this issue plagues just about every anime I’m not going to judge them that much and I wish anime fans were more understanding of why this happens and that sometimes to prevent it the lines need to be reworked

and if you think that’s hypocritical given my gripes with the BNHA dub changing dialogue, my beef there is they often change lines that are spoken by someone off camera or via inner monologue where there is no mouth flap to work around so in that example the change feels unnecessary

Deep Sea King is voiced by our friend Keith Silverstein who has probably shown up the most in my recap posts. he was Koyama in MP100, Speedwagon in Jojo, Papa Kenji in SMC, and now he’s here

he’s also the English voice of Hisoka so if I ever do decide to recap episodes of HXH we’ll see him there too

I like that Deep Sea King’s design is somewhere in between stupid and creepy

there’s something about those teeth that weird me out

“if its one on one maybe I can- AAAAHHHHH! [unintelligible yelling]”

“that stings a little. why would you do this?” I hope this is how he voices Hisoka

“I am...the hero...called Lightning Max fight me!” so this sentence contains some awkward pausing too, but given the context it works because one could interpret him as being shaken

“dammit arrogant guppy”

because I feel like it, Lightning Max is voiced by Ben Pronsky who is Mu Alexius in the Magi franchise (I wanted to read that at one point but got lazy)

its a bird! its a plane! its...a problematic stereotype

yeah sorry but Puri Puri Prisoner is just tasteless and its unfortunate

its even stranger since ONE is the same guy who told people to not feel ashamed of making BL content of his characters so....ehhhh its a lapse in taste

if you enjoy the character, great because he is entertaining, its just that I have seen people say he turns them off of the series even though he’s a pretty minor character

Puri Puri Prisoner is voiced by Ray Chase and for a brief moment I forgot what Sonic sounds like

I like how Puri Puri Prisoner is making this speech about how Deep Sea King hurt these men he fancies and the whole time Sonic just has this look of pure Done on his face

Deep Sea King licks his lips and I’m just getting flashbacks to every WTF Hisoka moment I had when I watched through that anime

“neither one of them could defeat me” Sonic this is why you’re a meme to us

I do have to admit them being so barefaced with their parody of the Sailor Moon transformations is amazing

“he’s naked. and he’s definitely no angel. nor is he human. nor do I wanna watch. I’m out.”

“crack crack. snap snap” this episode has great dialogue

so the manga gave us a better look at naked Sonic and its a pity the anime doesn’t

I really do appreciate the whole message about doing what you can even if its so much and then Saitama putting on that performance to make sure their efforts aren’t ignored

Child Emperor is voiced by Sarah Cravens who was Power Girl in Injustice 2 and is Sachiko in Erased

I could have met him at Anime Boston this year, he and his wife Sandy Fox were doing paid autographs next to each other and he didn’t have a line when I got there

sometimes I feel really sorry for King, but at least he and Saitama are friends

Melzargard is voiced by Vic Mignogna surprisingly sounding nothing like himself

Iaian is voiced by Xander Mobus who is the Announcer and Master Hand in in Super Smash Bros for the 3DS and Wii U, the protagonist in Persona 5, and he was Sakurai in MP100

Melzargard is one of the best monster designs in this series

I look forward to King getting expanded on in season two, I just really loved reading that

he doesn’t say anything, but Lord Boros is voiced by Chris Jai Alex who was Esidisi in Jojo

Lord Boros is such a good final boss, can’t wait to see that fight again

"I am here to eradicate you” yeah you...kinda don’t do so well with that

I know I’m not supposed to enjoy seeing Deep Sea King tear off Genos’s arm and punch him into a wall, but the animation on the impact of this hit is so good

so according to the monitor Saitama is 175 cm he’s 5′7 and for some reason I’m surprised

I will be sad if season two doesn’t use this song, however there is a chance we could get something MORE kickass...

so watching this fight just reminds me of how important impact is in fight animation

I forgot how grisly it was when that acid hits Genos

I am just so proud of Robbie Daymond because I was first made aware of him through that God awful Breadwinners cartoon and now he’s doing so well for himself in these big anime like this is the epitome of “started from the bottom, now we’re here”

I feel like this was one of the episodes where the animators truly came through, all the scenes that take place in the rain look great

this is honestly as a whole one of the best episodes of this season

also...I feel like the manga plays this off more comedic than the anime and I prefer it that way, I know it leads into a more serious moment but this scene isn’t as funny in the anime

I forgot how much I hated this twat in the green shirt

also is he being voiced by Todd Haberkorn? sounds kinda like him

I didn’t see any info on that, but I guess we’ll see Todd show up as Charanko and Drive Knight

for a guy who says he does this for fun this was still one of the most heroic things Saitama did, I know he doesn’t want to be hated despite what he says so its heartwarming to see him throw his chance of respect away for the sake of these other heroes

sometimes I feel like Amai Mask is underrated, I don’t know I just don’t see enough fanart or discussion about him (maybe I say this because I just really love Mamoru Miyano...)

this Saitama/Mumen Rider oden date is probably the warmest scene in anime history

yes he’s comically serious, but Ishikawa didn’t approach him like this so I’m not sure why they went this route

plus I’ve seen photos of Zach and he looks twelve so I don’t know how he accomplished this

“I feel bad, like I’m scamming him or something” technically you are, but its also kinda not a big deal

subtle allusion to King, I look forward to him in season two

having actually watched YOI now I just cringe when I think of everyone excusing that animation on the grounds of “it didn’t have a strong budget” because OPM is proof that’s no excuse and if you’re gonna argue animating fight scenes is somehow easier then you need to get out of my face

I know I already said this back a few episodes, but having finally seen it with my own eyes I needed to drag it up again

“Jack-o-Lantern Panic!” I still like Joint of Bones Panic but this is just as funny

the funny thing is Sonic could be doing literally anything else with his time, but he just had to carry on this pretend feud out of pettiness

today at work a man came in wearing this shirt and I told him I liked it since I’ve seen it at Anime Boston before and I have almost bought it, he said thanks but then afterwards kinda gave me a weird look that almost felt like he was sizing me up like dude is the idea of a woman watching OPM that weird to you? he was clearly much older than me so I guess he’s trapped in that dumb neckbeard “girls only watch stupid romance girly female girl shit” mentality forever

he’s definitely one of my favorite characters in OPM, I was happy he got an OVA dedicated to him boding with a baby boar that he uncleverly named Ino (that’s like naming a cat Neko)

this is interesting since Max and Erik voiced Ritsu and Teru and when those characters interacted Ritsu was the one left quivering

okay so this sequence of Sonic bouncing around was something I remember people giving the anime shit for because they compared it to how it was in the manga and were making these annoying “the manga has better animation than the anime!” jokes

like okay sure this sequence doesn’t look that great, but its honestly fine and knowing this anime did not have a grand budget to play with leads me to believe they had to literally pick and choose their battles and decided to put more energy towards the earlier scenes between Sonic and Hammerhead (again this is my assumption based on knowing they had an average budget to work with)

like I’m sorry if you wanted them to just copy paste Murata’s panels here, but the end result is still fine even if its not as visually interesting as the manga and there’s plenty of scenes throughout the anime showing how great it is and that they didn’t toss all their money at episode one and left the rest with nothing (which cough cough is apparently what happened with the anime people voted as having the best animation of 2016...I am trying not to be so angry about this anymore and just be nicer towards YOI but this is just so stupid)

I know when this episode came out we didn’t obviously have the later episodes (I think when people think of OPM’s animation they think of stuff like Saitama vs Lord Boros), but even the episode prior had interesting animation so this one moment garnering so much heat really did piss me off

anyway, DICK PHYSICS

maybe they cut corners on that sequence to put more money into Sonic’s penis exploding, I approve
