Andy Runton's Owly is coming back at Scholastic
Andy Runton’s Owly is coming back at Scholastic
Via PW’s Rights Report this week, comes the news that Andy Runton’s Owly books are coming back from Scholastic with new material!
David Saylor at Scholastic/Graphix has acquired world rights to a new as-yet-untitled book in Eisner and Harvey Award winner Andy Runton’s Owly series, as well as rights to reissue the first five books, originally published in black-and-white and now out of print, in…

Cranky Chicken by Katherine Battersby. Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2021. 9781534469884. 116pp. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781534469884?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Everything irritates the cranking chicken, including Speedy (a worm) when they first meet. Speedy likes Cranky because it saved him from an evil leaf. The thought of that makes Cranky feel happy, even if it's temporary. Speedy is determined that they'll become BFFs (Best Feathered Friends).
This is a good natured graphic novel that has three shorty, friendly adventures, and it's an obvious read-alike for Andy Runton's Owly books. There are than a few book-related jokes, and Battersby's drawings look like they might have been done in crayon -- they're as delightful as those in her picture book Perfect Pigeons, which I also really enjoyed. (She has a tutorial on drawing birds (as well as others) on her website at http://katherinebattersby.com/kat-bat-draws )

HeroesCon 2019
Tumblr media
HeroesCon is this weekend! I’ll be there in Indie Island, table AA-1116, and I’d love to see you there! The schedule was recently released, and I’ll be on one panel:
SATURDAY 11:00 AM Room 203B ALL AGES PANEL TURNS 37 (old enough to know better)
We’re in a golden age of comics for kids and teenagers. Why have all-ages comics become such a dominant force in the industry? What are the unique challenges of creating and marketing comics for different age groups? JOEY WEISER, NAOMI FRANQUIZ, TED NAIFEH, ANDY RUNTON, and JUNE BRIGMAN talk with moderator AARON KASHTAN about the past, present and future of comics for younger readers.
Tumblr media
I’ll have my new graphic novel Ghost Hog on hand in both hardcover and softcover! I’m also bringing several copies of the Ghost Hog Free Comic Book Day issue, in case you missed it!
Tumblr media
This would also be a great show to pick up Bezoar 3! Many contributors to the monster anthology, including Patrick Dean, will be at the show. See how many signatures you can get! As always, all money from sales of Bezoar 3 go directly to Dean and his family.
Tumblr media
This show is also a rare opportunity to pick up the Buzzard Guts custom figure, Master Natural! Packaging art by David Mack, and colored by yours truly! This is an extremely limited item, I only have three to sell!
Tumblr media
And, as usual with HeroesCon, I’ll be available for commissions! Have a favorite character you’d like to see (and own!) in my style? Find me in Indie Island and let me know!
I’ll also have Mermin graphic novels, SpongeBob Comics issues, and more! See you there!

Owly and Wormy Bright Lights and Starry Nights! Book Review
Tumblr media
Owly and Wormy Bright Lights and Starry Nights! is a stunning wordless picture book by author/illustrator Andy Runton. Owly and his friend Wormy cannot wait to use their telescope to see the stars. No matter how hard they try, they cannot seem to find anything in the night sky.
Owly decides that in order to see stars, they should go camping. The pair soon get stuck in a rain storm and must take…

Module 13: Owly
Tumblr media
Genre: Childrens, Comics, Animals
Book Summary: Owly finds friendship in an unlikely place after saving a worm in the middle of a rainstorm and in the form of two sweet humming birds - and he learns that not all goodbyes are bad or permanent.
APA Reference: Runton, A. (2004). Owly: The way home & the bittersweet summer. Marietta, GA: Top Shelf Productions.
Impressions: I'm not generally a fan of books with no words, but I think that this has to be the exception to the rule. Both stories compiled into this book convey such wonderful stories with great morals and that they are able to do so with no color and no text is impressive. Also I think it is wonderful that the main character, an owl named Owly, befriends both a creature that would typically be prey (a worm) and some creatures that I'm not certain an owl would ever interact with given the fact that owls are nocturnal (hummingbirds).
Professional Review: In this nearly wordless bit of graphic fun, Runton tells two stories about wly the little owl. In “The Way Home,” lonely Owly rescues Wormy from a thunderstorm, and, after nursing him back to health, helps him find his way home. “The Bittersweet Summer” tells a slightly more complicated story about friendship, as Owly and Wormy befriend two hummingbirds during the course of the spring and summer, and say goodbye to them when they migrate south for the winter. Owly is a delightfully sweet book. The whimsical black-and-white art is done with great facility for expressing emotion, and Runton’s reliance on icons and pictures in lieu of the usual dialogue makes the story perfect for give-and-take between children and their parents; even readers older than the target audience will appreciate the book’s simple charm, wisdom, and warmth.
APA Reference of Professional Review: Coleman, T. (2005, February 1). The way home & the bittersweet summer [Review of the book Owly: The way home & the bittersweet summer, by A. Runton]. Booklist. Retrieved from https://www.booklistonline.com/The-Way-Home-The-Bittersweet-Summer-Andy-Runton/pid=564705
Library Uses: Because Owly has no words, it would make for an excellent interactive caption display. Children can create a caption for part of the comic and have it pinned to the bulletin board.
Readalikes: Chi’s Sweet Home is a graphic novel featuring animal adventures. Binky the Space Cat is another graphic novel featuring the adventures of an animal. Babymouse features a plucky mouse that is both glamourous and exciting.
